Mass Effect 2 - What happens if you fail Thane's loyalty mission?

If Shepard fails to catch up with Thane's son Kolyat on the Citadel and he ends up killing Talid, this conversation will play out when you return to the Normandy and talk to Thane.
Failing to get Thane's loyalty may negatively impact the success of the final assault on the Collector Base, depending on your choices.

if you lose sight of that turian or his krogan bodyguard for too long then kolyat kills the turian and the mission is failed

I failed a couple of times because I got distracted by the Turian groundskeeper cutting rug in the nightclub.

I was so focused on looting that I lost track of Kolyat’s target and used a save load to get back in order to complete the mission

Hate to see Thane in a depressive state, but it makes so much sense. Thank you for the additional insight on his character.
