"Hmm.. What's my preferred method of dehydration?". In an age when everyone on social media is so blunt and vulgar that was mighty classy. You got my sub.
That’s a good point. I actually owned an N64 before I later bought a used SNES as a kid. And it was a breath of fresh air to play so many good RPGs on the SNES, after being disappointed by this game, which had some things going for it (graphics, music, etc.), and yet turned out so joylessly mediocre.
I... uh, actually adore this game. I am under no illusion that it's actually good, nor would I recommend it to anyone except the curios... But every time I play the game I have a ton of fun.
+HybridAngelZero It's honestly got a lot of charm. I think that if the game were given more money or more time it would be remembered very differently than it is today. And that was one of the points I tried to convey during the review. :)
@@SuperDerek I was actually really impressed you acknowledged how it's not just bad but FRUSTRATINGLY bad because somewhere, way deep inside the crap, there are a ton of really alluring high marks. Nobody ever talks about that!
I played this game in my youth, I enjoyed it even though I recognized some flaws the game had. I didn't have too much else to play.. I liked the earth element so I powered that up mostly until a bit later in the game when I found out that Water gives a very useful and important healing spell. Would I play this game again? I don't think I want to relive any nostalgia as the time investment would be too big for a seemingly mediocre experience with it's merits and flaws. The one thing that bothered me the most was not having a second or even third party member, just yourself against hoards of enemies almost always being outnumbered.
you can't be serious? you remember how buggy it was too right? "about the only issue Derek didn't mention probably because he felt bad for whoever designed it and didn't wanna call them out further" no bro this was just bad programming, the N64 at the time was well capable of handling what they had in mind for this game its just the devs failed to deliver, the game was a complete clusterfuck.
This guy defended Hydlide. HYDLIDE. But yes, Quest, one of the ONLY RPGs for the N64 (meaning the designers had nothing to go off of and were basically throwing stuff at the wall to see what stuck), is totally a plague that must be avoided and isn't worth being defended or looked at objectively. Yknow unlike Hydlide. which "wasnt that bad"
I agree. With some tweaking, it would have made a great beginner RPG for people who want to play RPGs, but find Final Fantasy and Xenoqears and the like too intimidating.
You described it perfectly when you said it was a little bit of water in a desert devoid of RPGs at the time. I really liked this game when I was younger pretty much only for that reason. I acknowledge it's very bad objectively but I can't help having a certain fondness and nostalgia for it.
$5! I paid around $120 CAD for this game when it was released 😞 When I got home I was so pissed. This was the first thing I bought myself with the money I made from my first job. I ended up selling my 64 shortly after that and buying a Playstation.
Aidyn Chronicles, a turn based RPG for the N64 actually has a pretty similar combat system, in terms of movement anyway. While having a better story. Though it's also pretty uneven in terms of quality. I found it fun cause it's crazy how much you can customize your party in it.
I remember being 12 and renting this game from blockbuster. It was really hard playing the first hour without dying. All i could rely to initially survive was a loaf of bread. There was no real story the first hour but i figured it would build up. Sad to hear nothing came of this. This game had some seriouse potential in its time.
If you can find it. I would recommend trying The Gameboy Color verison. It was released about a year or two later, and actually has more substance, and it's faster.
I love your videos dude, you really have a solid show with good info. I always like checking out what you got to say on games like this! I found you through the Goemon review.
I felt the same way about this game. I still have my copy from back in the day, in box. And I don't think I played it since. I just started checking out your channel and I'm digging it a lot! Just curious have you played Aidyn Chronicles The First Mage on the N64? It doesn't look pretty at all but I remember having fun with it back in the day.
+Sleep is For The Weak Hey thanks man! I own Aidyn Chroicles, but haven't played it yet. It's one I'm planning on making my way to eventually, but there are just sooo many games to review! :)
That's awesome! Not many people have heard of it, it's definitely interesting. I know how that goes, I have so many games to play myself. Thanks for the reply! Keep up the awesome work your vids rock! \m/
My wife and I bought this game at a retro store since we had both played it a bit as kids, and we gave up after we discovered the abysmal encounter rate. God bless your willingness to carry on and actually beat it to confirm that it didn't somehow miraculously become amazing lol. Seriously, someone give Derek a pizza or something for not losing his mind beating this garbage lolol
Not in the game collection?! =O A historic day indeed. I think that's the first time you've said that, even though you've not recommended other games. Really good review! Just fix the camera focus next time :P
+Censored Games Fucking Suck That's a Hori Mini-Pad, and it's every bit as awesome as you think. It's a Japanese-exlcusive though, so you'll have to import it. They usually go around $60. This one was an anniversary gift from my wife. :)
N64 RPGs, huh? Ever given Hybrid Heaven a try? Not many people liked it, but I thought it was a blast and really dug the RPG/action-adventure/fighting hybrid gameplay. It's also super cheap to buy so, if you think it stinks, you're only out of a couple bucks.
Ahh yes the Nintendo 64. During it's life I remember buying and trading my N64 twice because of the lack of games I like to play. There are a couple great RPGs but I don't turn on my N64 to play RPGs, mostly platformers and racing games.
+Classic Contagious Gaming Yep, My N64 for a long time was just the Zelda and Mario machine. A trend for Nintendo that's pretty much continued more or less to this day.
Your embellishment made this game infinitely better than it actually is, and for that I applaud you, good sir. I am sorry you had to play this stinker, I remember buying it when I was young and I felt slighted that I had wasted my hard earned money on a game that I wanted to like, but just couldn't...
Hey, not a bad review. When I used to rent this game as a kid, I swore it off as the worst game I had ever played (even worse than Superman 64), but I gave it a chance a few years ago. Honestly, I think what magic you choose makes a big difference. I noticed you stuck with the ol' tried and true Earth/Water route, which is obviously a pretty good method. When I played it a few years ago, I maxed out Wind and Fire and had a much better time. A ton of enemies are weak to wind, which makes the game a lot different than having to use avalanche over and over. Fire gets the vampiric touch, which makes melee worth using too. Just a consideration!
One of the four Western-released RPGs on the Nintendo 64 (At least that I can recall) and it sucks a hot dick. This is why JRPG fans will never get warm-fuzzies for the 64... Among other reasons. I'll still play it eventually, just to be sure there's nothing salvageable, but I'll be damned if it's not one of the biggest disappointments in vidya.
Casp Osaurus this is the first time I've heard of Aidyn. the 64 was starved for rpgs. this is about the only one that got promotion. prominent ads, probably the most.
Did you capture this footage on an emulator or the actual N64, because it has a fake CRT overlay look to it. It looks like the scanlines are uneven which happens when the game is played at a resolution that's not a multiple of the game's native resolution. Anyway, it's up to you how you want to capture your footage, but that filter you used doesn't look that great IMO.
Did you know there is a game boy color port of this game called Quest: Brian's Journey? I've never finished it but I remember they actually added some plot to the game.
Wow, Derek, the way you described Bryan being a sociopath and all, you should have had a segment on Game Theories! But yeah, I got a copy of this, only made it pass half way and then...well, I gave it up. Definitely one of the N64's weakest titles!
I remember renting and playing about a half hour and then quitting it for good. Anyone who had been playing the great psx rpg's couldn't play that garbage.
This is my favorite video. The disappointment you expressed at the beginning of the video was priceless. But were you disappointed because you wasted your time on this game or is it because this game wasn't going to be part of your collection?
Well done dude, this is a fine, fine review. I don't see you do many negative reviews. In fact, and I could be wrong, but I can't recall you ever excluding anything from the Game Collection before. Am I wrong or is "Quest 64" (apart from having the most generic name I have ever heard) unprecedented in its awfulness? In any case, the Ram was strong with you in this review, haha.
I played in the 90s and I like it, but mostly because for a time it was the only RPG on the Nintendo 64 and also in that time it was very rare to see an RPG with 3D environments (the RPG of the PS1 used to be like the SNES ones(like Wild Arms) or like FFVII where it's a 2D background with 3D characters drawn at front), I don't know if this was the first RPG with 3D environments but if not at least it was rare. Right now with a lot of more options to play it's not worth the time.
Great review for an incredibly mediocre game (at best). Nintendo was nothing but disappointing when it came to the n64 and RPGs (or there lack of). I mean hell, look at the NES and SNES. That's when I switched to the Playstation, and I've never looked back.
+The Game Grinder Yeah... Mario 64 sold me a Nintendo 64. My family wasn't the richest, so I just sorta had to make do. Later I got OoT and Goldeneye which helped a lot though.
I didn't get a n64 until about 10 years ago, but when it was time for me to level up my console from a SNES, I was patiently waiting for a system to really catch my interest. That day came when I learned Final Fantasy VII was going to be released on the PS1. I finally pick up my PS1 on Sept. 7, '97.
The elusive RPG on the N64!!!! This title has always tickled my curious bone. Hey man, great effort in the intro getting the game into the system :P It's like you don't like the game? oh this should be goooooood. High encounter rate? Bland story? Long fights? So what's the point! Nintendo really screwed up not pushing RPGs on their system. Playstation was killing it and there were some of the best RPGS ever coming out during this time. Imagine all the great games we should have had if nintendo hadn't let the genre fall apart. And this game is what we got? Obviously this team wasn't equipped to put out a quality title, but I wonder if the hardware itself prevented more teams from trying to program RPGs. Even Earthbound failed to launch. Derek, another excellent video. I noticed you keep your camera focus off of you. Is this intentional to showcase your collection behind you? I think I noticed this in another video... Anyway, the game sucks, but you rock! Very sad ending to your video :(
If you want to see a scathing review, check out my review of Kingdom Heats: Re: Chain of Memories. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed in a game, lol
I had this game on my N64 and would always go back to it, just to say I beat it. I was a completionist when I was younger so, while the game was pretty lackluster, I did have some minor enjoyment, experimenting with the different elements and learning new skills. Took forever to level up and by the end of the game, most enemies were quick to kill with the right spell (Avalanche trivializing the final boss was a bit disappointing but that's kind of par for the course with this game). It wasn't the worst game I ever played, it just needed more direction in it's story telling and a better combat system that actually encouraged diversifying your spell usage, instead of just powering 1-2 Element trees (Earth and Water completely outclassed Fire and Air).
God forbid I love your reviews! You almost always have an optimistic attitude and very likeable persona. I do wish you reviewed more games you dislike, as it's a stark but familiar contrast to the norm of your style. Great job nonetheless :)
Thanks Lilly! I do have some plans for some less desirable games on the horizon. And at this point I've been playing several games for the first time, so you never know when I'll bump into one I'll dislike. :)
I was so hyped when this game was coming out. I bought it around its release date and brought it to a friends house to play it with them. We were so confused and disappointed by the game. We were expecting something awesome like a Final Fantasy game.
I remember playing this with my brother, we both could only afford games at garage sales. We both knew this game sucked when playing it, but we had nothing else so we pushed but just couldnt get into it more than a day or two.
I enjoyed this game as a kid, and some parts of it do tickle that nostalgia feeling, mainly the Isle of Skye and its theme. Quest 64 could've been so much more than it was. I did finish the game, but it was a game made for a different time and I wouldn't recommend anyone go out of their way to play it. I enjoyed the combat system sometimes, but it did get extremely repetitive and encounter rates were out of control.
The demon was named "Mammon"?!?!! Were there intentional Abrahamic themes, or did they just take names that sounded cool from here and there in the grand Square soft tradition?
Haha I enjoyed the video. I remember playing this as a wee lad and enjoying it, rose tinted goggles though, cause the game is truly awful. One nitpick, was it just me, or was the focus on the shelves behind you when you were talking on camera? You seemed blurry, and everything behind you seemed crisper. Am I crazy?
Nope, you're not crazy. It's unfortunately something that I didn't notice until I was done rendering, and had no time left to re-shoot the video. I'll get it next time though! :)
I've always thought Quest 64 gets an even worse reputation, simply because of the lack of RPGS on the N64. If it had been on the playstation it might be considered, bad or even mediocre but not awful.
Welp, I was like 9 when this game came out, and remember somewhat enjoying it, as a kid of course...I never really bought it though, only rented at Blockbuster.
The sad thing is, with a bit more work and effort put into it...it could have been a great entry game for people who want to get into RPGs, but felt intimidated by stuff like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. A simple RPG with simplified mechanics to help ease people into embracing the genre. A shame, really.
Back in the day I loved Quest 64, back when I first got into NSYNC! I played the game listening to my favorite boy band! That was my nostalgic memories! That and I used a game shark to beat the game! Dear god the ending sucked, but it was a fun RPG!
I think I'm in the minority by saying that I actually really enjoyed this game! Sure it's mediocre, but I found the battle system intuitive and I enjoyed a lot of the soundtrack! I also have a lot of nostalgia for it too though.
Never played this game, I knew it existed, but didn't appeal to me. There weren't many N64 RPGs either so I figure I would've grabbed every one there was. Although I did have a PSX so I had all the RPGs I needed over there.
in terms of RPGs, I wasn't truly exposed to them until ff9. but on n64, paper mario is still one of my favs. and easily the best rpg on the n64. even though that's not saying much....
Simply put: This game is a beta. Shopkeeper give you free stuff because a money system was never put in. NPCs pretty much scream "If the game was complete, i would be your next party member!" no cutscnes, no balancing. It feels like they started developing, then time or budget ran out and they just slapped together what they had and released it.
I remember renting this game after seeing an ad for it from "Disney Adventures" mag. Matter of fact, it was my first N64 game I played when I got my system. I found it boring right off the bat. I thought it had promise. A real shame the N64 didn't dish out RPGs like PS1 did. Nevertheless, a great review!
+Spell Dragon Yeah, I picked it up a little while back. I''m sure I'll revisit the console again sometime. Between Ogre Battle 64 and Paper Mario, there's at least a good 3 N64 reviews left to do. :)
Hahaha, that opening. I can see that you truly hold this game in the highest regard. :P Wow, I love the dark twist you put on the story and Brian in general. Hahaha. That was awesome. I do plan on playing through this game, purely for the sake of having done so, and maybe I'll just make up my own story as the destroyer of worlds, seeking out this dark power to unleash it upon everyone. Mwahahaha!... or something like that. :P Great video!
I think i'm older than you, and the internet wasn't so previlant when this game was out lol. I think I was like 16 years old when I beat this game. I'm 32 now.
oh snap, first Game Collection reject? Does this mean it's actually getting the boot, or will it hang in a permanently shelved state of purgatory? Awesome and funny review btw. If it wasn't for the stream chat theory crafting, I think you might have just given up. Or lost your mind, whichever came first.
+SeafoamSmiles Technically not the first reject. But it's the first one that wasn't a "soft" rejection, that's for sure. Other soft rejections includ Persona 3 "The Answer" and Lufia 1, and I believe Brain Lord as well (though I think that was actually mostly a gag.) :-P
It always baffled me that the N64 came out in the thick of the SNES/PS1 “Golden Era” of JRPGs and yet there was not a single one ever released on the platform. I don’t count, Quest 64, Hybrid Heaven, or Aidyn Chronicles. Those are all trash. I can’t believe there was never even ONE good JRPG made for the system. Smh...
This game wanst finished. Anyone that says this review is too harsh filled in the missing gaps with their imagination. Which is fine but you cant expect the average player to be that charitable.

Just because you enjoy it doesn't change the fact it looks dull.

Dummies. A Dragon Warrior game on the N64 would've made a killing.
Beating the game back then was worth it at long last after 20 years...for the fact that i can truly enjoy the genius that was this review.
great review. i never played this myself. and had no plans to. and i'm glad.
rpg's do not need decision making
So...you don't like the old time bikes hey....I always liked this one but honestly i have never really put a ton of time into it
ProJared did a really good review explaining why the battle system is broken.
Very sad ending to your video :(
Was so hyped for this when I saw an article about it. Rented it from Blockbuster and was so confused lol.
Was wondering if I'd ever come across a game that didn't belong in the collection. This was definitely one of the funnier reviews you've made lol.
If you want to see a scathing review, check out my review of Kingdom Heats: Re: Chain of Memories. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed in a game, lol
@@SuperDerek I tried playing that game several years back and really hated it, so that sounds like a fantastic suggestion.
02:52 Marionasty! LOL when I was a kid playing this I thought it was a Super Mario reference.
I humbly await those reviews haha but in the meantime I'll settle for nostalgia and a cup of coffee XD
I will never forget spending all that time looking for this stupid kid's dad....and that's how it turned out. Blue Balls 64 is what I call it now.
I was so hyped when this game was coming out. I bought it around its release date and brought it to a friends house to play it with them. We were so confused and disappointed by the game. We were expecting something awesome like a Final Fantasy game.
This review is probably more fun than the game. Had a real good time watching.
Wow, I felt about a bit sad and interested during your review. Good job dude, you made a boring game into a good review. Even though i like Quest 64.
I was so angry I bought this game I immediately took it back and demanded a better game. I got Mario karts instead. Thank god
I've heard the GBC version is better. Maybe review that?
+Ryuma King I've been thinking about it actually. Funny how the GBC version costs 3x as much, guess that's a good sign..? :)
My favorite thing about this game is when you die you dont lose progress you can just save at an and grind until you are strong enough
The demon was named "Mammon"?!?!! Were there intentional Abrahamic themes, or did they just take names that sounded cool from here and there in the grand Square soft tradition?
This game had so much potential
Haha I enjoyed the video.
I remember playing this as a wee lad and enjoying it, rose tinted goggles though, cause the game is truly awful.
One nitpick, was it just me, or was the focus on the shelves behind you when you were talking on camera? You seemed blurry, and everything behind you seemed crisper. Am I crazy?
Nope, you're not crazy. It's unfortunately something that I didn't notice until I was done rendering, and had no time left to re-shoot the video. I'll get it next time though! :)
I think Brian was after that book in an attempt to destroy the world now
I've always thought Quest 64 gets an even worse reputation, simply because of the lack of RPGS on the N64.
I love this game!
Me too!
Same.
My apologizes for liking distractingly bad background music.
Notice how in the thumbnail, SuperDerek didn't smile but cringed, I guess.
in terms of RPGs, I wasn't truly exposed to them until ff9. but on n64, paper mario is still one of my favs. and easily the best rpg on the n64. even though that's not saying much....
Ever play Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage? An epic adventure in mediocrity. Somehow I played it for over 100 hours and beat it back in the late 90s.
When I first saw the upload I thought you were going to praise the heck out of this game, so thank god I watched it and confirmed otherwise lok
If you have the urge to play n64 RPGs, try Aydin Chronicles. The best n64 rpg, for what that's worth.
:P Great video!
five bucks I got ripped off with Q64 for more
I had this game, and I knew it was dog shit, but I beat it anyway. WHY GOD WHY?!
+StrangerX9 Noooo! If only I had reviewed this game sooner! D,:
I think i'm older than you, and the internet wasn't so previlant when this game was out lol. I think I was like 16 years old when I beat this game. I'm 32 now.
+StrangerX9 oh gods, I'm 32 also! At least I'm not alone in being old...
We are the children of Nintendo!!!
Playing this game with my roommate loving it
oh snap, first Game Collection reject?
Smh...
Paper Mario
Paper Mario is basically the one good RPG. And maybe Ogre Battle 64? I haven't played that yet though.
Quest 64 was garbage but it is a nostalgic game when you're a kid. It seemed better than it really was back then.
First RPG I ever played. This game was so bad. I would always go the wrong direction after a battle. Was so frustrating.
wait...he wasn't smiling in the thumbnail...
I'm… not a patron anymore?
:(
Nice review, I knew there was something up with Brian. Turns out he was evil all along...
+chutoy Oh god, that's mortifying! My list got screwed up! I need to fix this. I'm adding an annotation. brb...
+chutoy There, I just added an annotation. I'm really sorry man. Will never happen again.
+SuperDerek RPGs lol it's cool, no worries
Quest 64 is just a Giant NES Game and overhated. It never stood a chance against the other games released during it's time. *cough* Zelda *cough*
This game wanst finished. Anyone that says this review is too harsh filled in the missing gaps with their imagination. Which is fine but you cant expect the average player to be that charitable.
I got this game from a pawn shop when i was a kid that shit was hard
Hey man, if you are tired of this game send it my way ;)
I've been wanting to play this ever since I saw it in the rental store back in the day.
