Great video! I’m glad you took the time to explore different options for opening this broadhead. I experimented with these about 8 months ago with Scotch tape and it worked flawlessly. I also cut some thin rubber bands into 3/8” lengths and wedged between the blade and ferrule. I made sure they stayed straight and just slightly inside the ferrule to prevent them from sticking out. I couldn’t tell the difference in the two methods. I sharpened the three edges on the rip tip hoping to aid in penetration with sharper edges. I’m not a huge mechanical guy, but like the concept of the broadhead. I decided on these mostly because of the blade design. I can’t imagine them breaking or snapping off easily. Again, thanks for great work!
Shot a nice buck last night…first hunt this year actually. Used the thorn rift with the black pin (which is harder rubber than the orange) and it made a 2” gash from in to out. Deer dropped within 20 yards. Another testament to the effectiveness of the pins. I wish I could post a picture in the comments. The impact is so violent, the blades pop out immediately. It isn’t a slow deploy like your pull test! There are forces at play you can’t recreate with that pull test. I may try the tape when I run out of pins…if anything because it’s cheaper. God Bess ya man.
Yeah, for sure. I never had a single issue shooting deer with it. It wasn’t until I tried to test it on a chicken that I realize there was an opportunity for error. Knowing what I know now about the tape, it is definitely the way to go without having to buy any new rubber pins. I only made a video because someone challenged me and said that it didn’t open up on a deer once. I never had the issue so I wanted to prove them wrong and that’s how this test came to light. Thanks for watching.
I don’t even have a crossbow, but I am thinking of buying one, enjoyed your video, I wonder how well dental rubber bands would work? Like the ones used for braces
I tried those first. Way too strong. The blades didn’t have enough stroke to cut them. Thanks for watching. Let me know if I can help with anything. Have a good one.
Nicely done. How many layers of tape end up over the blade? I wonder how air temp affects the tape. Cold temps might make it more brittle in which case I'd worry about the blades deploying immediately upon trigger pull.
I use only a single layer. I hunt in Michigan and haven’t seen any issues with the cold weather. I also have had zero deploy prior to impact. This small mod has performed 100% for me.
Interesting video,Speaking of interesting I just pulled out some of my old Ravin arrows and noticed that not only did I have a couple with “Black eagle” written on them but also Have a few that have “Goldtip” written on them Kind of interesting I thought! 😀
If you want to practice with the thorns, I find even with the practice clip installed, the blades would still deploy on the third or fourth shot every time (I shoot the ravin 29x, so maybe overkill for the broadhead). To remedy this, I sacrificed a rift broadhead and superglued the blades in. It works perfectly and use it before every hunt to make sure everything is flying the way it should. Hundreds of shots and still going strong. Trying the tape on my next hunt.
I use a standard compound bow but found the XV version of thorns are better at deploying. I like your tinkering idea but wonder about rain or how scotch tape would hold up if it got wet. If you get a chance try RTV Silicon gasket. The red high heat stuff is what I’ve been using. I just squeeze it in the hole and it comes out the other side, wipe, and let dry(about a hour). Silicon is super slippery so even tho i haven’t had a clogging problem it will slide by anyways. It’s waterproof too.
Cool idea. I have not had a single issue with the tape. I’ve left it on for several seasons and it worked without fail. This is a good option for the viewers. Thank you for posting.

I told you. If you put the pins in correctly, they work…and work well. The scale pull is not taking into account all other forces exhibited when actually shot by the bow. Also, if you don’t make sure the tape is perfectly flat, air will catch it and either tear it off or impact your accuracy.
These are opinions. Make the video that proves me wrong. Their pins are flawed. Rubber is the problem. As long as the channel is plugged with rubber they will fail.
I’d say you were correct if you were. I have been using them for years and every deer taken (shoot 4 does and 2bucks/yearly…Wisconsin you can gun hunt with Xbow) has a massive wound channel. Maybe I am just getting lucky?
Also, you think it’s an opinion that if the tape catches air it won’t affect the accuracy or rip the tape off completely? Must be some sort of alternative physics your thinking of..
I stated in the video I also have not seen any issues with the many deer I shot with thorns. But once I seen it fail and could get it repeat the malfunction I deemed them unendorceable without a solution for the potential problem. I do the research to share with others to help them avoid potential issues in the field and that is what I have done here. It was expensive but well worth it to come up with a dependable solution for the consumer of this broadhead. Thanks again for your input but I stand by my proven research. Have a good one.
I still don’t like that broadhead. Same as my other, you got a cobble to make it work reliably. That tip the way it’s designed looks like a blunt carp point with a bunch of judo point blunts to grab and push the tip in. I’d rather stick to a gator style broadhead that requires nothing other than inertia to open the blades. It’s at least a good idea for people that like that broadhead and wanna figure out how to make it open easier. you’re probably could just get a piece of aquarium hose and cut it thinly and slide it over it instead of tape, and it probably would be more durable.
I appreciate your opinion and that you have a preference. I shoot long distances and this is the only broadhead I’ve found that can shoot consistently past 40 yards. Thanks for your input and checking out the video.
@@zumaconcepts1200 guess I’ll find out as I just bought an R10 a few weeks ago. My buddy’s shoots 3” groups at 100 yards using rage hypodermics. Both collared and non collar versions. @@zumaconcepts1200 This the first decent broad "test" I've seen on UA-cam. Not perfectly done in terms of being done scientifically but close. I've been testing broadheads out of crossbows since if I remember correctly 2011. My first xbow was a Tac15i. I developed and used methods to test both accuracy and reliability. As a summary, I found very small 1 inch cut three blades made by Wasp (the Wasp Bullet 1 inch cut 100 grain) able to shoot almost same hole at 50 yards using the same arrow. That Tac was advertised as shooting 400 fps. I was also able to shoot a Grim Reaper 1.25 inch 3-blade into 1 inch groups at 100 yards and they functioned reliability at that distance. I tested a variety of mechanical heads and was amazed that companies were selling heads that had a high incidence of failure in terms of deploying immediately upon tripping the trigger and there were likely hundreds of deer wounded because of the inaccuracy those failures produced. A nice thing about a fixed blade head is I won't have to worry about it opening properly.
