Hudson, a masterful series of video content for all Nikon Z9 camera owners. In a way, you become the reference source for optimal use of the Z9. camera. Thanks
Hi Hudson! Thanks for this video series. I thought I was a pretty smart guy until I watched you go through this. Thanks for the help, I really needed it.
Super helpful, Hudson, so thanks a lot for producing this video. Others out there charge for such information, so I greatly appreciate you making this information publicly available for free.
I have such a fabulous crew of workshop attendee friends. I tailor a lot of content to what I know they need. Plus it helps in the field when we all are on the same page. I'm having a blast in the Palouse with a great crew right now. :)
Thank you very much Hudson for all 4 videos. I know the videos are for the Z9, but currently applying the same settings on my new Z8. You are the best!
I have shot wildlife for years and just got my Z9 last week and I have to say this set up for wild life tracking is amazing using the shutter button to lock the target and then the AF-On to 3D tracking is Genius!
Godsend! Just got it...following along but is a little tough to do quickly. Would pay dearly for a printed settings guide so I can do this on my upcoming flight. Love your stuff!
Once again, great video, continuing the series. I love the Action set up here and can see myself using it immediately. The Hybrid setup is brilliant and so easy to use, along w/ Fn2 to change Image Area for a 1.5x factor.
Thank you!!! I was on hiatus, then kinda retired photographer. Desiring to come back to my 1st love and finally bought the Z9. Heck mirrorless cameras wasn’t even a thing when I had to stop shooting. My biggest fear was, will I be able to figure out all that this camera can do? You have helped my fear go away. Thanks for the time you put into this video. Can’t wait to watch your other videos!
Thank you for the work you put into these series of videos, and for sharing your expertise. I will watch this one again, since I found out today that my Z9 is being shipped!
Thank you for these great videos! The way you explain things is so clear. I’m getting the z8 this week and I think this will be very helpful. Thinking they will be almost the same.
I figured out how to use it. I feel so dense. Of course I know how to use it! I think I was just burned out after doing all those tutorials. Everything works wonderfully!
Hey @hudson, thanks this tutorial was a blessing! I have a question and i feel that you are the only one who can help. after using the z9 for months, i decided to pick up my d850.. i went to straight to AF-C 3D and noticed that my tracking wasn't tracking subject and i am at a mind twist, can you please share your wisdom to fix this
Went out birding this morning. Using B Banks mounting my F500mmPF grabbing song birds and shore birds in flight, in both FX and DX and I think I can sell my TC1.4 iii and TC2.0 I mean WOW. going from 500mm to 750mm in seconds, tack sharp when I'm on the subject, decent hit rate. When I missed it was me not the camera.... I LOVE THESE SETTINGS.
Thank you for this excellent action setup video! I appreciate your knowledge and the time you take to make these videos. I'm looking forward to watching all your videos!
This is a great video series on set up. I was setting up my camera for the action bank and went into my "ISO Sensitivity" setting and changed my Min shutter speed to 1/1000....just a thought
I would never do that myself, because I often like to slow my shutter much lower than that to purposefully pan with my subject and blur the background.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Thank you for the comment. You are absolutely right. I did not fully think of how that setting would effect me in other ways, thanks
Hudson, do you have a list or spreadsheet of the Fn button settings for each Bank? I have a problem locating these settings in the video and trying to write them all down. Thanks for your videos, they are a great help.
How do you backup your compact flash card settings? I'm not seeing the Bin file that everyone is talking about that should be on the Compact Flash card?
Hi Hudson, and thanks for all the great content you provide! I am having an issue where when I switch between Bank A and Bank B they get “out of sync”. It seems to be just the @back button” AF-ON focus area. I have that set to single point only on Bank A, and 3D tracking with eye detect on Bank B. If I switch from Bank A to Bank B, it stays at single point. Alternatively if I start on Bank B and switch to A, it will stick with the 3D tracking. SO frustrating. I only have a week left to decide if I’m going to keep it. Do you have ANY idea what I could be doing wrong or what might be happening? Thanks in advance!
hi, when open the photo shooting menu, the first item appears is "reset photo shooting menu" instead of "shooting menu bank". How can I get to the "shooting menu bank" ?
Hudson, great idea to save the menu settings to a card for reloading as needed. Is there a way to move the saved settings to another card to allow cards to be formatted occasionally?
I think I found an answer: Place a memory card (MC) with Saved Settings in Slot 1; load Saved Settings to Z9; replace MC in slot 1 with a different MC; save settings; repeat process for each Settings Bank A thru D, assuming all banks have saved settings.
@@mrchasman That is what I did, I saved settings all once I was finished to a XQD 64 and tucked it away, then saved again to my big CF B normally in slot 1 for day to day use. Great idea.. But I have a followup ? for all. during the Save settings action, are ALL setting being saved in an NFSET*****" camera model specific file? It looks like it in the manual, I assumed all were being saved in a single file, we only save as we go to safe guard our workflow in progress? YES?.
I've set up the banks as shown in this series and when using bank B (action) for stills, the histogram doesn't seem to work. No matter what I do to the shutter speed or the aperture, it just sit there displaying the ideal "centered mountain" display. It seems to work fine for video. Have I missed a necessary setting?
Auto iso is keeping exposure set. You can toggle that with a press of the iso button near the shutter while clicking the front control wheel one detent.
About your hybrid focus suggestion. assuming we have pressed the AFON button(3D +AF ON).. then you need to take the shot, pressing the shutter will then engage the Wide area AF mode before it takes the image? Does this keep the 3D tracking the same time the wide AF focus is engaged?
@@victoriamannina8933 it will not loose the focus point if you turn on the focus persistent option in the custom setting. Just tried this “hybrid” method, but i would use another button instead of the shutter button to engage the wide area AF.
Hudson, thank you, but I still find Banks confusing... compared to U1, 2 & 3 on Z6/7's. The Banks can be set to retain various settings - but they can be overridden if changes are made to camera settings. What then are Custom settings and how do there interact with Bank settings ? I don't get it.
Just think of them as 4 different groups of menu settings. Shooting bank remembers the state of both Video Recording and the Photo Shooting Menu. It is seperate from the Cutsom Settings banks which only remember the state of the Custom Settings menu. All the menus below custom settings are unaffected by them (Playback through User). If you are working in Custom Setting Bank A and switch to Custom Setting Bank B it will pick up right where you were the last time you were in Bank B. Switch back to Bank A and it will be where you left it then. That's why I have you back up all your camera settings to your memory card so you can return to it even after manipulating settings. Nothing is locked. Just think of it as four separate menu states for both the custom settings as well as a combined set of Video and Photo shooting menu settings. It remembers where you were when last in that bank for that menu.
Great video, a lot of pauze/play to get the settings in the camera :-) , but with your explanation it all makes sense. I only made a few minor changes to my personal preference. Many thanks for this FREE tutorial, as mentioned by a lot of other viewers, it's a great reference to get started and I can't click on like enough to thank you! One question on the MODE settings, as it's only briefly touched and I probably overlooked it in the first video. If you are using AUTO ISO, is there a specific reason why you don't put the camera in Manual? Same question for the first video actually, as you mentioned in this one, you setup to Aperture priority for the STANDARD mode. Is this also using AUTO ISO. Keep uo the good work!!!
Hello Henry, thank you very much for your great Videos. I would also change VR to Sport mode. For Playback. I configured Playback to Fn1, In Playback I assaigned Zoom to Fn1, and Histogram to OK :-) I used Fn1 because I have to do it the same way on Z6. --- With this configuration I can change to Playback with Fn1 and use the same button to zoom-in/out. With OK i can temporairely show a big histogram (It is only assaignable to OK. and its not a RGB histogram)
I find sport mode overkill unless I'm shooting from a moving vehicle. I have a "level and histogram only" view configured in my display rotation so no need to burn a button at all. It's on the Display button. All that is described in my settings Bank A video. First name is Hudson, but no big deal.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Sorry Hudson I appologize. :-) In the "Play" mode, there I have a lot of free buttons I can use. - Today I did some test with soccer. Its incredible how good the focus is even on wide open lenses. :-)
maybe it's because I have been listening and setting up the Z9 all day but I'm a little confused on why there is a shooting bank and a custom bank. Why isn't there just one that includes both. It seems when you go to shoot, you need to go to the "I" menu and make sure both say "B"s are checked to get things right . . . I know this is getting to you late, but if you could explain this, it will clear my head! Thanks
Nikon makes slow and incremental changes to menu structure age controls. That's good and bad. It's been that way in pro dslrs forever, so...? I actuality think 4 banks that remember all the menus in total would be much better. You're not crazy. It's awkward, but it's what we have to work with. I wish I had a better answer.
What a pitty, that the Fn2 is not on pressing toggling between FX and DX, if the possibe selection is limited on this two image area modes. Nikon has really to improve their user interface.
