Thank you so much for these two videos. I set a couple of things differently from you, but never would have thought of those settings without your guidance. I upgraded from the D610. Just grateful that I'm not the only old fart out here trying to learn new tricks! LOL I've also gotten photos with my new Z8 that I could never have captured previously with my out of date technology! Just feel blessed to be able to enjoy it!
Thank you Hudson! I can state without hesitation that I would have NEVER figured this out without this & the preceding video. My guess is that although I set mine up a LITTLE differently, it is set up about 90% or more the way you cover in this video.
I think I'm ready to go after watching the A bank video twice and this one once! What a leap coming from a D7100 and a Z6. Thank you; these videos were incredibly helpful, and I so enjoy your channel!
These videos are amazing! There is no other word to describe them! (You think it is tough coming from a D7100 & Z6, try coming from a different system (Sony). Everything is new.)
Hi Henry, thanks for taking the time to make these videos, it helps a lot. I've watched the series several times to get my head around some points as well as to tweak how my settings and try things out to optimize how I interact with the camera. Right now one of my main issues is the idea behind the banks versus custom user settings from the z6/7 series in combination with the z8/9 "Extended menu banks" function. Leaving it "on" means changes to the individual menu banks are stored. For example, in Bird mode I change my shutter speed from the preset 1/1600 to 1/500 to capture a perched bird in low light, then switch to my Landscape bank - my shutter speed in Bird mode will now be 1/500 when I use it the next time, which to me is sub-optimal. The alternative is to turn the function to off, but as far as I can tell, whatever the shutter speed and aperture of the mode/bank you are in are applied to ALL you user mode/bank settings. Using the same example above, I am in my Bird settings, turn "Extended menu banks" to "off". Now when I switch to my Landscape mode, my shutter speed and aperture will be 1/1600 & f2.8 by default instead of the 1/200 & f8 I currently have as my Landscape base settings. Am I misunderstanding the philosophy behind Nikon's approach or is there another way to make the base shutter speed and aperture in the respective banks "sticky"? For the life of me, I cannot imagine a scenario where having baselines that continuously move is the preferred working method of anyone - it contradicts the definition of the word baseline, among other things as well as leaves the door wide open for mistakes made in the heat of the moment to be a repeat occurrence. Thanks in advance if you are able to provide me with some insight - I cannot believe I am the only person moving up from a z6/7 to a z8/9 who struggles with this. Cheers!
I have a whole video you should look for on how the banks work. If you applyl extended settings, the exposure settings are included with banks (ie shutter speed & aperture). without it ignores them and treats those globally. nothing in the banks is "saved" ever. They are bookmarks that remember where you last were in them. There is no set point beyond the Save and Load settings option. That's all explained in that video. You have to 1) set your camera up how you like in all four banks, 2) save your settings, 3) load your settings again after making shoot specific changes. If you format the card you lose the saved settings on it. So remember, Load settings, format, save settings. Every time...
Thanks Hudson for another fantastic video on the Z8. I'm sure we are all very appreciative of the time and effort you have out into both this one, and the Bank A video.
Really appreciate the time and effort put into this extremely useful video. A+ content. I must profess as a recent convert to the Z8 coming from Fuji GFX, I'm really hoping Nikon will take a closer look at the shooting experience and allow for all buttons to be mapped to all functions available. This is standard in Fuji cameras and allows each user to tailor their experience instead of locking the user into Nikon's idea of the best shooting experience. Mainly my frustration is the inability to map ISO to a rotary dial esp. since many Nikon lenses offer the FN Ring which can be mapped to aperture. Just my 0.2c as a recent convert.
Hudson, thank you so much. Will need to watch a couple times to make sure I've covered every setting you have shown. Im a nikon man only and my daughter is now too! She's starting out photographing sport
Greetings from Australia 😁 Thanks for your outstanding vid regarding shooting banks. I'm coming from a Z6ii to the Z8 and the difference is amazing. My main interests are landscape (sunrise/sunset) and astro. You have made configuring my Z8 so much easier.
Hudson, I found with the Z9 it was handy to add the "warm colors" to the i menu for Astro for quick access to this amazing feature. Thanks so much for putting out this guide and saving me hours.
Charlie, I just got & set up my Z8 (I love it but for now, the only lens I have is the 24-120.) I put "Warm Colors in my "My Menu". It might not be as quick as i Menu, but it is faster than looking for it.
Rob, for sure "my menu" is faster than the deep dive menus. Since the imenu is customized for each bank individually you really don't need most of the standard imenu settings for astro I find that white balance in K, AF-S, pin pnt, Red and monitor/view finder brightness seems to be the only things one would be changing. Good luck with your new Nikon set up. Pick up a 20mm F1.8 for your astro needs - won't regret that lens @@R.Hogarth
Hi Hudson. Thank you for putting out these videos and your enthusiasm. This is high quality educational material and has accelerated my understanding of the Z8 and my transfer from a Z7ii. I can now get on with taking photographs in the knowledge that I have a sound understanding of the camera settings and my options when conditions change. I love the 'bank' system on the Z8.
Love these videos and just got a Z8 with a Z 24-70 2.8 and coming from a D90 it was a huge upgrade for me. The banks how you explained them make a lot of sense for me and well done with the video. I like how it is easy to change between then via the I menu on the front. Will be using my Z8 for some videos on my old guy fitness channel and also action shots of my daughter playing indoor volleyball to name a few things. I am just over the moon about this camera and only have had it a few days.
Hudson, the care and time you put into creating these extremely thorough and useful videos is simply amazing. I'm sure I would have been totally perplexed setting up the Z8 without your instruction. FYI -- You need to update your link to the Anker battery since that model is no longer available.
First time for me coming to your channel after recently purchasing a Z8. Really great explanation of the menu settings. very clear and precise. Thanks so much. Subscribed.
Hey Hudson, thanks for your videos. They're really helpful. I'm still struggling to get my head around the differences between Z7ii and Z8...the shooting banks are a little baffling (don't know why they took away the user presets) but I'm getting there! Still a little unsure what the differences are between shooting banks and custom banks (couldn't they all be in one bank?) but hey...it's a great camera. Thanks again!
This is brilliant indeed. Thank you so much. I've been watching this and the longer one a couple of times, actually. Scratching my head at times (I am approaching from the Leica M - world, so my new Z8 is.. errr.. confusing, challenging, mindblowing.
Very helpful tutorial how to use the banks👍. I always struggled with the U1/2/3 on hte Z6/7, was never really clear which settings were affected and which not. However I just found out after 6 years of shooting with it that my D850 has custom banks as well😅. My approach for having a backup of the user settings in any camera is putting a copy of the binary file on my Dropbox, in worst case I could pull a copy on an empty memory card
Hi Hudson, again another outstanding, comprehensive video on shooting banks. I especially appreciated info on ISO settings..In the brief 25 min video I learned so much and I know I would not be able to seek all that information on my own. Hybrid hand-off is excellent and you nailed it. I can"t wait to hear what you think about camera grip..Again much appreciated and Cheers from WPB,FL
Thank you so much for putting the series together which is much appreciated. This has saved lots of headaches. I can't change the focus ring to anything else. Am I the only one struggling with this?
Thank you Hudson for all of the wonderful insight and help! I changed the primary card slot to SD for Astro and landscape to keep the camera a bit cooler in hopes of limiting thermal noise?
Thanks for an amazing video Hudson! I just got the Z8, so the set up videos have been incredibly helpful. One question - I waited for the longest time to move to the Z system, having stuck with my D850. Question is whether i should now sell my D850 or is there still a use case for keeping it alongside my Z8? thanks
Z8 and D850 are the exact same resolution, so if you're doing astro (ex. milky way or deep sky astro) and able to duplicate the setup, you can combine the images to double exposure time. That's a case I plan to use for my usage :)
Thank you SO much for explaining the Banks on the Z8. I have followed your instructions re Saving my settings to an SD card. When I check that the settings are, in fact, on the SD card, nothing shows up in the Z8 folder on my computer. Am I not waiting long enough for it to copy it to my SD card? My camera almost instantly tells me it has copied them. Or perhaps my SD card which is only 32 GB is too small & needs more GBs? I am too scared to format my cards until I can visually see that my settings have been copied. Thanks for your help, especially at this busy time of the year. Best wishes.
Hudson: Thank you vert much for these Z8 setup videos! I have learned so much about my new camera. I was particularly interested in the difference between noise/dynamic range above and below ISO 500. Is this true of other Z cameras? In particular, I still have my 5 year old Z7. Would that be true in that camera too?
With the Z7 (and ii) the switch to the second channel is at 400. The z6(ii) is at 800. I explain how to ascertain all that in my milky way course www.hudsonhenry.com
Hudson, All of the Z8 videos, especially the "Banks" ones are great and have been very helpful! I will be traveling to Antarctica very soon....do you have any suggestions for tweaks to Banks A, B, or C for this environment? I realize I can change them on the fly, if necessary, but any advance preparation would be helpful. Thanks!
Hudson, your videos are very helpful as I absorb info on the z8. When in 3D tracking, is it necessary to hold the AF-ON as the focus point tracks the subject ?
Question: Coming from the D850 I am super curious about the 3D tracking. I tried today on honey bees in a lavender bush with the FTZ adapter and the Nikon 105 2.8 G with no luck. Tried switching to "Quick" and "Erratic" but those didn't work either. Am I doing something wrong or is this too much for the camera? Thanks!
I thought I explained that for lenses with only 1 function button they map it as ln1 (ie 24-120 S) , but the longer lenses with two map the outer button where your thumb rests as Fn2 (100-400S, and all the long glass). Fn1 is not really reachable shooting in the long Ienses. I map both the same to have that functionality on my 24-120.
Thanks so much Hudson for these very informative videos! IVe gone through both of your videos - Is it possible to store base exposure Shutter/ISO/Aperture for the different modes so that when i change modes it goes to those numbers as default? Thanks
Hello Henry and thank you for this great videos. Just a question: the 3D-tracking autofocus on can be set only on Nikon Z Lenses is that correct? I have a Tamron and would like to have your settings but I cannot set thew Fn3 button on my Z8 the way you did in this video. Thank you in a advance for your time. Giovanni
I'm not familiar with other camera systems, do any of them provide an in-camera, settings saving capability? I've been a Nikon user since the film days and the Z8 is my first mirrorless camera, paired with the 24-70 2.8 S lens it is so good! Thank you for the valuable insights into all these settings!
YES! It's far more accurate. There's nothing like AFS with pinpoint. Especially in low light. The DSLR days were different. in the ladscape you should absolutely be using AFS with the Z's or you miss out on extreme accuracy that is sacrificed for tracking moving subjects in AFC.
Thank you, Hudson, fantastic job! When I was setting the Landscape menu, I also changed the Release mode, as I need a single shot. It also changed the release mode in all other banks. When I fixed it back to 20fps in the Action bank, it also changed it back to 20FPS in Landscape. Any hints on how to fix this?
There is no way. Sadly you have to adjust the release mode every time you switch. It's a flaw. The only way around it is the Recall Shooting functions Hold I use in the Bank A settings for quick action surprises. It's a really dumb thing that they don't put the drive mode in the Shooting bank where it will be stored.
Thanks for the Video’s . When you make the additional shooting banks Are they on the card or in the camera ? Do you lose them when you Format the card.
Z8: A question about auto focus while shooting video? If I’m in AF-F and AF isn’t nailing eyes- I hit touch focus on screen- does Nikon now switch to manual focus? How does back button focus intersect with the auto focus system- does it switch to AF-S? I cant find anyone talking about the best pro usage of Nikon’s auto focus with video specific shooting modes. Thanks for any thoughts! Do you have a specific setup for a video bank?
@@Daniel_Zalman yes, but I watch and control it with aperture and shutter speed depending on the scene at hand. My eye is always on those three numbers at the bottom of the viewfinder.
Hi Hudson, I just got my Z8 and setting up the banks according to your instructions I seem to have a problem because when I switch to bank D (ASTRO) the setting "warm colors" does not "activate" unless I go to the "pencil" menu and choose bank D... is it supposed to switch automatically when I use the FN1 button as you instructed? Thank you very much!! Massimo
Hi, I’m shooting with Fujifilm gfx100s but it’s not good for all types of photography, heavy and bulky with gf lenses to carry around, and slow for sports and wildlife if sometimes I like to experience it! But it seems Z8 is all in one camera. The only matter important to me is if I switch to Z8, with 14bit and 45mp could I have high images quality same as 16bit and 102mp on gfx100s? Please advise.
Thanks so much for your work and your teaching skills. It has been very helpful. I am having an issue with the Z8 FN Buttons. I saved the shooting custom settings and when I press the FN button there is no response to my saved settings. Have you heard anything about the FN not working?
@@HudsonHenryPhoto finally figured it out. I had to set the setting in camera that and then save ‘current ‘ settings. Thanks so much for your response!!
Sure would like you to detail and explain the intervalometer on the Z 8 as it would/could be used for Milky Way images. I’m still confused what the interval is - is it the time between image captures or the whole set of time of each exposure+number of exposures+time between exposures+time to write each exposure to the card? I understand that 15 seconds is actually 16 and 30 is really 32. In this crazy world that almost makes sense! Thanks Hudson for sharing your knowledge and insight.
Yep intervalometers area the same simple devices they have been for decades. It trips the shutter every so often on the schedule you set for the number of frames you set. Forget and leave LE noise reduction on and miss every other frame. Be sure to leave long enough to reset and be ready to fire. Usualy an extra second is fine, just test it.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto That's all I've been doing for the last couple hours. I'm fighting it. I watched as you set 240x1 with an interval of 2 seconds. I don't want to take 240 images so I've set it at 5 x 1 with a 2 second interval. But do I still set exposure time using the dial as normal? If I want a five second exposure and ten of total frames what would my settings be? It was so much easier with my D810 and aftermarket wireless intervalometer! LOL! Thanks for your help...
@@easy56wedge 10x1 is one set of ten frames. 6 second interval. Set your exposure manually with a 5s shutter. It's not at all different from the old wired intervalometers or the internal intervalometers from the D700 on... There are added controls and options, but the settings really haven't changed much from the dslr intervalometers.
Caution! I recently downloaded firmware for the Zfc from Nikon. When I hit the upload, the camera shut itself down and would not restart. Nikon support told me it would have to be sent to a service center. I mailed it, at my expense. After a week, I got an estimate for repair. Almost $ 300.00. This camera was just over one year old, purchased directly from Nikon and had less than 1,000 actuations. The camera worked perfectly until I tried to upload the firmware. Note - I own over two dozen Nikon cameras including four Z series and I am very familiar with the update procedure. Has anyone else had this problem?
no, but that sounds not good. And i really must say that is not very accommodating from Nikon.I find that embarrassing. That is a simple process. What do they repair? And what they tell was happend?
I probably missed this somewhere but are each of the four usage modes (standard, action, landscape, and astro) set to manual exposure mode as opposed to shutter, aperture, or programmed?
Hi Hudson, I'm still trying to get my back function buttons assigned now that I've been shooting a bit with the camera. Here is my question: is it possible to program Recall shooting functions (hold) on 2 different buttons with different settings? I'm wondering if my camera is defective as it won't hold both sets of settings. For example: for FN-1 - Recall Shooting Functions (hold) - Shutter speed 1/3200, Aperture f/6.3, AF area mode -Dynamic small, AF Subject detection- animal, Focus tracking with lock on AF, Release mode 10. I then check my camera, use the button, and the setting is working. Next I attempt to set the Video button using Recall Shooting functions (hold), - Shutter speed 1/4000, Aperture f/7.1, AF area mode -Wide -L, AF subject detection- animal, Focus tracking with lock on, release mode 20. I check the camera, the setting works. Then I hit the FN1 button to recheck that button and the settings have changed to the settings programmed to the video button. Any advice or insight is appreciated. Thanks!
Nope. One recall shooting functions hold setup per Custom Settings Menu Bank. You can set it up differnetly for bank A than B, but not for two seperate buttons within one bank
Hi Hudson and good evening from Germany. Thanks for your setup guide for the Z8, makes it a lot easier to understand all the functions. One question, maybe I be missing something: for the bank B Action I wanted to include burst shooting (fast, 20 shots / s) but that seems not to be possible...? Have you tried that? Only chance is to choose via the dial on the left shoulder of the Z8. But then this stays active even if I switch to Bank A or so.. Can you help, did I miss something? Regards Andreas
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Is this also not possible for the Z9 or is it behaviour different? So maybe there is hope for a first firmware update on such things. Nevertheless, a great camera :) Thanks for your reply
Thanks Hudson. I watched your Z 9 setup video but once I checked the new video on how to set up the new Z8, I found it a little bit different from your old settings, probably that is what you have tweaked in the last one year. I went to B&H to check the wolverine kase filters and I found them very difficult to handle as the magnetic adherence. If you attach the filter or the cap to the ring, it is very difficult to take off and with someone like me who has buttery fingers and when you’re on location and you’re trying to take off the magnetic filter from the lens you going to drop it. So is there a way around?
Yep, the new revolutions are coming into my store now. We'll have all of them in two weeks. They have a single filter thread integrated that allows a standard pinch cap to be deployed. They're also color coded and have a touch stronger magnet otherwise the same great glass. I loved em during the Cuba workshops. Had a 3 stop on that new 85 1.2 nonstop during the day. Www.hudsonhenry.com/kase
Sorry, I got lost after setting up Bank-A. When I tried to set up Bank-B I got lost on the copying and renaming. Oh well, This is not easy. I had to take a break, and I think when I came back a day later it was like learning all over again. Somehow I'll figure it out. I love my Z8, I think if you went a little slower it would have been better for me, Thank you for at least getting me started.
Nope. My standard bank A knock around mode works great to adapt for such shooting. Action, Landscape (aka tripod) and Astro are my dedicated banks. But others should create banks that make the most sense for thier style.
Great instructional video. Question. I can not store the number of shots I want for each of the banks. For instance if I set 10 fps for the standard bank and then 20fps in the action bank, the standard method automatically becomes 20 fps. If I then reset the standard bank to shoot at 10 fps, the action bank will be reset to 10 fps. In other words, all banks will be reseted to the latest rate of fps I will pick. Am I doing anything wrong? I have tried saving each bank after setting them up, all together and the same happens. The last fps picked will become standard for all the banks. Again, what am I doing wrong? Again thanks for the video. Gilberto.
You've hit a thorny issue for me. There is no way at all to save the framerate to a bank or a user setting on any Z camera. You can incorporate it in recall shooting functions hold, but that's it.
I just got a z8 and coming from fujifilm, the menus and everything is really different for me now obviously! I'm starting to learn and get into it but I struggle a bit with the shooting banks, I have set shooting menu bank A and custom setting banks A to work together as standard that I use for daily use. B is set for action, but when I change between the two the release mode doesn't change, for example if I'm in my action bank it's set on 20 frames and when I change to A ( my standard bank) it's still set on 20 frames but it should be set on single frame. Anyone might know what I'm doing wrong?
Hi Hudson....In regards to the power brick you recommending, can it run the Z8 as a stand alone with no other battery in the camera? Thanks in advance.
Sadly nothing can. A PD capable brick or ac plugin keeps the battery topped while you work, but there is no way to plug via usb and power the camera. No.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto So are you saying that just as long as there is a battery in the camera and a PD capable brick connected you can continue to shoot? ...and keep the in-camera battery topped?
I don't want to speak for Hudson, but I think in the previous video he says that he prefers not to do that. He would rather have people follow along with the videos and do it themselves.
@10¨30 Assigning Fn1 to point focus ONLY puts it into point focus mode as long as you hold Fn1. On release it goes back to 3D mode. Also, when in Bank B, it does not constantly autofocus - pressing back button focus immediately sets it to point focus. so shouldnt Fn1 be left at 3D tracking?
You're using "recall shooting function" try "recall shooting function hold" as I recommend instead. No, 3D looks for subjects and this method disables that. In some scenarios the subject detection fails and gives false results and you want a manually directed point affirmative instead.
RE: Z8. Why is it that memory of the AF-S and AF-C functions can be lost when going into the i-menu button? This is frustratingly happening to me despite being careful to always save my settings when adjusting SHOOT or CUSTOM settings for the bank menu. At 10:39 you seem to refer to having the same issue with I-menu button. Being able to have the various menu banks correctly open to AF-S or AF-C is critical for this to work.
That's only the case if you are using recall shooting function hold. That's a temporary override of the actual settings. Hit the programmed button and it instantly switches whatever parameters your choose (which can include framerate, AF, exposure and more) until you either push the button again or enter the menu structure (including the I-menu) at which point it returns to the actual camera settings prior to activating recall shooting function hold. Entering the I-menu alone has zero influence on chosen AF settings except as it might deactivate recall shooting function hold as I learned filming this video at your marked reference point.
Photobanks don’t seem to preserve release mode. If you have 20fps in Action it seems to carry it over all other banks. Or if you have it set to Single shot, that gets carried over Action etc..I guess it’s just what it is.
Great video! I am growing very fond of my Z8. I think I have it set up following your guidance. I did notice when I use mode 1 or 2 is also applies to the other shooting banks as well.
Turn off the timer. Use burst mode. For slower shutter speeds on a tripod, use a cable release or remote. It will only fire the bracketing burst and stop. There is NO way to decouple the light from the timer.
No way. I can't stand the feel of that. To each thier own. I've tried it and it's certainly not for me. I only use it to position and the center press centers. I much prefer the lens fuction button for that purpose. That leaves my thumb free for a myriad of other tasks.
You should make up a card with all the base settings, and then a card for each of the banks so idiots like me don't have to stumble their way through all these menu settings. I'd pay to have those both for start up and for back up/
It's so important to understand the why of these customizations. I've had people show up to workshops who've downloaded someone else's settings for Sony, Canon and Nikons without understanding them. They get lost and so do we as instructors since the camera doesn't respond as stock and we don't know the reasoning and thought behind the customizations. We just do a factory reset in that case. The worst disservice I could do to the community would be to offer to load my settings into your camera without explaining why I made each choice, thereby leaving it for you to decide if that makes sense for your own style of shooting. I'll never do that.
Thanks for your video(s), very helpful. I disagree with your auto-iso setting (for action). One of the big benefits of these system camera's is that you "see what you get" while taking photo's and if you change your shutterspeed, you see it straightaway. With auto iso you loose control of your light and thus your look and feel of your photo.
Maybe it's because I already shot manual mode with auto ISO with my DSLRs and trained myself to find the right settings, but I have had no issue with the hundreds of thousands of frames of soccer and motorsports I've put through my Z6 and Z9. Your subjects may differ, however!
That's certainly not true in my experience at all. You see the effects of iso as well. Auto Iso is a godsend in complicated light handheld. Keep your eye on it and use shutter and aperture choices to keep it in bounds. You most certainly still see the effects of exposure with auto iso active just as well as without, but with it your exposures in complex situations remain precise.
@@DarrenLloydPDX Hi, do you use it or not? Both your subjects are fast moving but mostly also in good light i think. I could understand using auto iso in complicated light situations. I will have to give it a proper try, but to my feeling I would loose to much "play with the light" look and feel.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto hi, thanks for your reply. Yeah, i have to agree here, in these cases its great. At the same time, the more auto, the less you have control of the output, but i guess its better to have a photo that is good than a photo that is not good.

Hudson. Thank you very very much for doing these videos. I have watched them twice now and I learned even more the second time.
I'll try that too. Makes good sense!
Subscribed.
Thank you Hudson. You have a very clear method of explaining the somewhat complex menu system. I did setup my Z8 with your recommendations.
Again, great overview of setting up the banks. Thanks a whole bunch. Now I just need to get out more and starting using this phenomenal beast.
Thank you, this and the previous video for setting up "Bank A " are excellent
Excellent set of videos and incredibly useful detailed information. Thank you so much.
Man, you're good! Thanks for all your help setting this bad boy up! New Z8 user!
Thank you so much for putting the series together which is much appreciated. This has saved lots of headaches. I can't change the focus ring to anything else. Am I the only one struggling with this?
Thanks, from Israel, as i mention i waited your Video to setup my Z8
Thank you, what a great starting point for setting up a Z8. Thank you.
Man really appreciate you doing these videos.
Thank you Hudson. Was glad to find your Z8 Video';s and I learned alot.
I am new to the Z8. Thanks for the help with the banks.
Thank you Hudson for all of the wonderful insight and help! I changed the primary card slot to SD for Astro and landscape to keep the camera a bit cooler in hopes of limiting thermal noise?
Excellent videos on the z8... thank you!
Incredibly helpful! Thank you so much!
That's a case I plan to use for my usage :)
thanks for this and the primary video, you rock
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Thank you!
Thanks!
Nope. I think the action banks and the landscape banks will be great for that. :-) Have a blast!
These videos have amazing detail. Any chance you will do an update to this video due to the release of the updated firmware?
Already done weeks ago. just search the channel.
Hudson, your videos are very helpful as I absorb info on the z8. When in 3D tracking, is it necessary to hold the AF-ON as the focus point tracks the subject ?
Aw thanks. Yes it is. It tracks so long as you hold it. Let go to reacquire or switch subjects.
Thanks!
Love the video, thanks. I saw you set your Fn2 button and lens buttons to 3D AF-ON. Any reason to set them both?
I thought I explained that for lenses with only 1 function button they map it as ln1 (ie 24-120 S) , but the longer lenses with two map the outer button where your thumb rests as Fn2 (100-400S, and all the long glass). Fn1 is not really reachable shooting in the long Ienses. I map both the same to have that functionality on my 24-120.
Thanks so much Hudson for these very informative videos! IVe gone through both of your videos - Is it possible to store base exposure Shutter/ISO/Aperture for the different modes so that when i change modes it goes to those numbers as default? Thanks
Yep, just turn on the extended banks setting.
Giovanni
Nope. Works with even third party lenses and legacy AF-S on the FTZ just fine. First name is Hudson, but no big deal.
Very helpful video ! Thank you 🙏🏻
I'm not familiar with other camera systems, do any of them provide an in-camera, settings saving capability? I've been a Nikon user since the film days and the Z8 is my first mirrorless camera, paired with the 24-70 2.8 S lens it is so good! Thank you for the valuable insights into all these settings!
Thanks for the videos - just got my Z8. Question: for landscape, if I already use back focus exclusively, do I still need to set AF-S?
YES! It's far more accurate. There's nothing like AFS with pinpoint. Especially in low light. The DSLR days were different. in the ladscape you should absolutely be using AFS with the Z's or you miss out on extreme accuracy that is sacrificed for tracking moving subjects in AFC.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Thanks
Thanks Hudson
Thanks for the Video’s . When you make the additional shooting banks Are they on the card or in the camera ? Do you lose them when you Format the card.
This video should help. It's equally applicable to the Z8 bank system.

Hudson, just wondering, is the reason that you use manual mode in the Action Bank because Auto ISO, basically makes Manual mode, as semi-auto mode?
@@Daniel_Zalman yes, but I watch and control it with aperture and shutter speed depending on the scene at hand. My eye is always on those three numbers at the bottom of the viewfinder.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto I see. Thanks.
Massimo
Thank you, very helpful.
Have you switched banks? The custom settings are only for the bank they are saved in.
@@HudsonHenryPhotoThis explanation is so much easier for my feeble mind. I think I have it now. Thank you so much!
I had exactly the same with my Nikon Z6, sent it for repair, the motherboard was fried. Not kidding.
Thank you Hudson! I appreciate your response and clarification@@HudsonHenryPhoto
Thanks! Is there no exposure delay mode to set for landscape mode? Appears that release mode:timer is not able to be saved with a bank.
Regards
Andreas
Another gripe of mine you've discovered Andreas. The Drive mode is not in the banks... Grrrrrr There is no way.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Is this also not possible for the Z9 or is it behaviour different? So maybe there is hope for a first firmware update on such things. Nevertheless, a great camera :) Thanks for your reply
Thank you very much!
Pause, and double click to rewind are your friends here. Everyone goes a different speed. Much slower and it would be a 3 hour movie. Ha ha. ;)
Do you have recommended shooting/custom bank settings for portraits and/or macro shooting?
Thank you. I am trying to find a way to do it. I’ll let you know is if I do. Thanks anyway. Learned a lot by watching your videos.
There is no way sadly. I've been complaining about it since the Z7 launched many years ago.
There's no way to set the framerate to change with the banks sadly. It's an annoying quirk of Nikon's. You're doing nothing wrong.
does z8 have metadata iptc was thinking buying this want this as shooting football sports
Yep. Been that way since the z6/7iis. The ankler brick I link here let's me run milky way timelapse all night long.
Hi. Brian from South Africa here. Is a copy of your saved settings available to download and will they be able to be copied to any Z8 ?
ISO 500 without a star tracker, does that work or do you have to go back to 3200 or 6400 ISO?
500! www.hudsonhenry.com/milkyway
hi Hudson, can you use the Nikon Z9 settings file on a Z8? thank you .
negative. :-(
How will the Astro settings change when shooting the northern lights?
Much much shorter. Totally depends on aurora intensity and foreground light sources.
Photobanks don’t seem to preserve release mode. If you have 20fps in Action it seems to carry it over all other banks. Or if you have it set to Single shot, that gets carried over Action etc..I guess it’s just what it is.
Yes, you're right, as well as the Mode. That is a bit disappointing.
Thanks!
Great video! I am growing very fond of my Z8. I think I have it set up following your guidance. I did notice when I use mode 1 or 2 is also applies to the other shooting banks as well.
How do we stop the green light activating when exposure bracketing?
Turn off the timer. Use burst mode. For slower shutter speeds on a tripod, use a cable release or remote. It will only fire the bracketing burst and stop. There is NO way to decouple the light from the timer.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto I gave up and taped over the light with black masking tape!
@@gunsentry8349 timer is a frustratingly slow way to shoot bracketed frames imho
@@HudsonHenryPhoto I added your suggested settings and now faster bracketing and NO! light. Fantastic. Thanks Henry.
Why take the thumb off the focus box moving joystick to... wait for it... focus? Set its press to do the 3D tracking hand off.
