  • The Perfect Modern Spider-Man Comic that No One Talks About
    In this LewisFilms video essay we talk about Marvel Comics' The amazing spider-man renew your vows and how it is the perfect modern spider-man comic for what the zeb wells spider-man comic run should be. I am a big advocate for this comic after reading it for the first ever time, which features Peter Parker aka Spider-Man, Mary-Jane Watson aka Spinneret and Annie-May Parker aka Spiderling. This new Spider family dynamic works super well for a future story in the world of Peter Parker and I wish they continued with something like this in a similar vein, in the 616 universe of Marvel comic books.

    The best way for marvel to except Spider-Man as a family man like in Renew Your Vows, Spider-girl, or Life Story is to tell this side of his life in movie format. That is why I am excited for Spider-Man Across the Spider Verse, where Peter B Parker will have a daughter. If critical/audience responds to this is highly positive, then the comic books might be persuaded to tell more of the Spider-Dad story.

Annie struggled to make friends in high school but managed to make some friends with the drama club she joined and Normie Osborn. She's quite introverted and not as confident or sassy as Mayday. Mayday is confident, sexy and stylish. She has a lot of friends and love interests, she's popular in school and wears stylish clothes to school, as opposed to Annie wearing normal tshirt and jeans. I remember following this series, and in the back of my mind believing that if I pre-ordered it enough and it somehow sold numbers comparable or even outsold the main title, the main universe would have to take notice as a result. It was a wonderful few months. Then the cracks started showing when the main writer left. And then the artist only did covers. And the artist they left was...not very good. And then they Jon Kent Superboy'd it and did a time jump for no reason. My tinfoil hat says Marvel execs purposefully sabotaged it to tank the book, but the reality is that it probably didn't sell as well as I or they were hoping for, so less effort was put in.

    • @AustynSN
      @AustynSN Рік тому +6

      what's funny that logically I'm not exactly mad at MJ for that.
      many comics, including the Invincible, pulled that shit up. Heck even in Invincible Eve waited for 5 years and then started dating that blue guy before Mark showed up whereas for MJ the time has passed 17 years. What I hate is why they needed to do this and if so how badly they pulled the outcome. Mark had a mature response even tho he kinda felt weird . In his own lines " I can be both understandable and frustrated at the same time. I'm not blaming you for anything" and Eve and Mark had a kid as an attachment to stick together. MJ and Peter had none and the way Peter broke down , started begging to see her and other bs was just pathetic to see. It's not like there are what ifs and alternate version of Peter where he left Mj ( notably Assassin Spider) but the way they wrote the current 616 version is just sad. It's more salt in the wound when literally in december 2023 the Ultimate universe got a reboot and we see a 30 yr old Peter with MJ and his kids, Uncle Ben and JJ just chilling and giving Peter advices and everything going smoothly in that world .

    I wasn't introduced as a kid to Spider-Man in the comic books when he was a single bachelor. That's great, but I fell in love with Spider-Man comics when he was married. I love Spider-family stuff too, but i don't even need them to have a kid yet. Keep that in an alternate universe if need be, but there shouldn't be anything boring or unrelatable about everyman Peter Parker being in a happy and reasonably healthy marriage with a good (and gorgeous) woman who loves, understands, and accepts him. Imo, both J. Michael Straczynski (until editorial forced him to do some stories in the end I think we all regret) and David Michelinie especially prove that you can tell interesting, exciting, and iconic stories even though he isn't a single bachelor. Everyone loves teenage Spider-Man, but proper adult Spuder-Man isn't any "less relatable" because of his motto that makes him who he is, "with great power, there must also become great responsibility." Spider-Man as a growing adult making his way in life, not getting overcome by life's challenges, but struggling and coming out witg victories in the win column along with the defeats is relatable because Spider-Man is about the weird and awkward spider with surprising potential becoming the man. Spider-Man represents learning from your mistakes through trial and error, growing as a person into a great hero and an even better human being, taking on responsibilities for the good of ourselves and others, and, to quote an old maester of the Wall, to "kill the boy, so that the man may be born." We don't need Petwr to be a middle aged man with back problems (although Spider-verse's Peter B. Parker is one of the best in modern memory). He's a young man who's comfortably in adulthood somewhere between 25 and 30, when most people start to figure out a few things, not have everything worked out by any means (men don't really establish themselves and reach their peak potential until around 35-45), but it is a time when they begin to come into their own and begin to establish and build toward the kind of person they wanna be and the goals they want to accomplish. That's what Peter Parker needs.

    I'm always glad to see RYV get talked about. It was the first comic series I collected. Actually went out of my way to do so as well (so many spent lunch breaks). Something you may not know is that this is actually a second run. The original RYV Story was a mini-series part of the Secret Wars event. That story's fine (but doesn't compare to the run) and provides some context on a point or two that the run may not fully explain, such as who Regent was.
    One thing you didn't really talk about though was Annie/Spiderling herself. As far as kid characters go, I always thought she was pretty solid. She wants to help and often does, but she's not SO competent that it doesn't feel like the writers are trying to force you to like her. She has her screwups but they feel like legit mistakes a kid would make, especially with her amped up Spider-Sense.
    (Side note, and I don't know if you read DC at all, but Annie feels like she'd fit right in as a guest in a Super Sons book)

    The thing is most people grew up with/were exposed to Spidey as whether in the matieral or media either as a young adult in college and/or a young adult married to MJ dealing everyday life and trials. So the whole sentiment from Quesada, certain fans, and any writer and editors of keeping the character in a position as to where future generations can relate to him is moronic af and holds him back tremendously. It also restricts the character in that he can't have a character trait or arc where it goes outside the range of "relatability" and that's another thing, Spider-Man is a character, victim of people projecting self-inserts onto him and viewing him as a blank slate and a big part of that is because of his youth and his mainstream surface level qualities.

    I AM A HUGE FAN OF RENEW YOUR VOWS. Honestly my one gripe with it when it went from being a miniseries offshoot of Secret Wars was that the book didn't change it's name to "The Amazing Spider-Family". I adore the story told in the miniseries and the first twelve issues. Sadly however Marvel just had to come along a shite all over it. First they fired the monthly book's original writer Gerry Conway, a veteran of the character who clearly shared our views that Spider-Man must progress to avoid becoming stagnant. He also wrote the highly recommended one shot graphic novel "AMS: Parallel Lives" which I consider to be the definitive story of Peter and Mary Jane's relationship. Conway tried to leave the book in the hands of the artist Ryan Stegman but Marvel kicked him off the title and essentially rebooted the title on #13 with writer Jody Houser and artist Nick Roche. This version destroyed the book in my opinion by jumping 8 years into the future and essentially retreading the territory covered by the Defalco and Frenz' SPIDER-GIRL comics. Under Houser and Roche the book limped along until quietly dying with #23. It was plain as day that Marvel Editorial wanted to kill the book but it was a success under Conway and Stegman, so they replaced them and retooled the book till it was failure they could cancel. Bastards.

    • @jeppyjep
      @jeppyjep Рік тому

      Jody Houser did a great job in Renew Your Vows tho. Yes, i also wanted to see more of kid Annie, but teenage Annie is pretty good. She still somewhat energetic and bubbly, but also sometimes "embarassed" with her dad since she entered that teenage phase. Im glad that Jody didnt turn Annie into a stereotypical edgy and mean “You dont understand me” kind of teenager. The family dynamic is kept the same as when Gerry wrote it.
      The only gripe i have with it is the art. Ryan Stegman's art is freaking amazing and it feels like a downgrade when other artists draw for RYV. The latter art isnt that bad, but i wish we got better artists for it.

    Renew Your Vows did something mainstream comics rarely have the balls to do; had a hero intentionally kill without going crazy or evil or some bullshite.
    Venom was explicitly determined to kill Peter's family and recounted how he'd keep trying. He wound up burning to death when Peter dropped a burning building on him. He last words were screaming in denial, "Spider-Man doesn't kill!" like this was somehow unfair.
    Peter doesn't become evil nor does he start killing every purse snatcher. He accepts his wife's assurance that he had no other choice.

    In the main universe, Mary Jane really doesn't have a reason to become the superheroine Jackpot. The excuse is that she lost her so-called adopted kids and needs to be a heroine to cope. Yeah, that's not very good therapy and her slot-machine luck powers are pretty lame. The main problem with that is that Mary Jane is vulnerable to the law of averages. There's a very good chance she'll either get a weak power or a power that is completely ill-suited to the situation.
    Mary Jane as Spinneret is far more believable. She wants to help out her husband and protect her daughter. She understands the danger and is willing to take risks. She understands the responsibility that comes with the power. And eventually, Peter will figure out a way for her to be Spinneret without draining his own powers.

Mayday on the other hand, is a popular girl in school like MJ. She has a lot of friends, a lot of boyfriends/love interest and she's confident, sassy and sexy. Even their appearance reflect their personalities. Mayday wears a lot of stylish clothes to school while Annie wears some basic t-shirts and jeans. I love Mayday a lot, but i prefer Annie because she resembles Peter more.

    A great comic that also sadly suffered from a major issue... Being better than the main line comics and out selling it.
    That was why they canceled the series and had him hook up with MJ... And why they also broke him up again.
    They hooked him up because the spin off was more popular and needed a reason to promote the main line comic and then dumped the idea when they found it easier taunting a possible relationship rather than giving one.

    Don't forget that the marriage was actually forced into the storyline by Stan Lee's decision to marry Peter and MJ in the newspaper strip (which is now defunct.) There was literally a reference to Peter having sex with the Black Cat ONE ISSUE BEFORE the proposal. Granted, it was in spectacular, but still,it shows how out of the blue the marriage was at the time. Prior to then, while Peter and MJ were talking, there was no real sign that they would marry.
    In fact, I still remember a panel in 291 where Peter talks about being 'so damned happy' before deciding to propose... this was absolutely not the case in the books prior to then, it was so forced in that it still sticks out to me decades later.

      @@donaldwright8567 I think Mayday should just stay as an alternate reality mc2 thing. While Annie fits perfectly into the main continuity had civil war (been written by someone better and properly lol), back in black, and omd not happened, that's how it would've played out and raising her from a toddler and into a kid for like 10 years, take your time with it, no need to rush and let's enjoy that as well as let Peter enjoy that lol and then transition into a teen. It strengthens the bond and expierence between Peter with his daughter and he can mentor her as she gets older. I'd get rid of MJ having powers because it's not necessary and can do without it lol, I don't mind it within ryv and it adds a different flavor and new dynamic for what it is within the book, but you can say the powers was only a temporary measure, something finite. Because then it just gets silly with MJ being another spider-person like the rest of them smh. And her having no powers is what grounds Peter as a hero, just as Lois is with Clark, and what grounds the family, and offers a different perspective and insight.

He would just told Annie to go home and hang out with her mom or something.
      Her being Spinneret also adds to the story when Xavier approached Annie to join his school. She actually has a say in that decision because she's also a superhero now. Her bonding with the Venom symbiote arc was also pretty good. Her not wanting to be a burden to Peter but still want to help him in battle, thus bonding with the symbiote and manages to actually control it strengthen her relationship with Peter.

While the Power Pack is a thing, They don't have parental supervision and don't deal with city level threats most of the time. Spider-Man does, and his powers are already being partially drained by MJ using the tech from Regent to simulate his powers, so he and MJ basically make up one spider-person's worth of power. That can cause some issues when you need to save one of your partners.
