    I have been a licensed amateur radio operator for over 30 years. When I started the only choice was HF or UHF VHF repeaters. That was it. Technology has evolved. I don't care what anyone says, this is a radio. It does use a radio frequency, just not the ham bands. I can also see a lot of governmental agencies transitioning over to network radios with apps similar to Zello. The reason is: 1, its private. No one can listen in with a scanner, most cities have good cell coverage. 2. Can be encrypted with a VPN.
    I have used Zello on my cell phone. And every time I get a phone call I'm not able to use Zello. I like having a dedicated device for my communications applications like Zello, TeamSpeak, Echo link.
    I also see it as a good way for a lot of people to get into radio communications. Not everybody is interested in getting their ham radio license because you have to take a test. That is why it is hard to get new ham radio operators. People don't want to take tests. Like the gmrs license all you do is pay a fee and you get a license for 10 years with no test. Network radios don't require a license or a test. So anybody can use them. That can be a good thing.

      Technology has improved our hobby over the last 20 years. My main operation is via a Voip sip phone, and I can dial into some allstar nodes and Repeaters. Fantastic 73 de 2E1CEQ

    After four years of more or less intense use I can say that I am really happy to have bought this device. I often find myself driving many miles and I need to keep in touch with my co-workers and family and the train of messages that these contacts can generate risks being a dangerous distraction. This device is a practical and elegant solution, which with crystal clear audio allows you to keep in touch with who you need. It's a phone? maybe. Is it a radio? Almost. What matters is the enormous versatility that such an object offers. Obviously after 4 years you feel the old age of the operating system that is no longer current. One thing missing is the ability to easily change groups without having to interact with the touch screen. A rotary switch would be much more appropriate.
    Then there are other aspects which, however, are more related to the individual applications used, so this is not the best place to talk about it. I hope to see in the future other devices similar to this one, perhaps more performing and with a larger screen where with a single device you can have a driving aid with your favorite navigator and a versatile and safe communication platform to use.

    Best and easiest to understand UA-camr that shows radio's. Good visuals. Good video quality. Always enjoy your reviews and tests etc. Keep up the good work. Watching from Australia. Not many people take the time to do great videos. Usually no effort. I like seeing close up around radio's including seeing menus. Features.

    I viewed this video last year .. I’ve just purchased one of these Network radios N60 3G using my Nectar points. I wanted a GPS rather than using my iPhone during driving and arriving almost at my destination with a flat battery getting lost at the last mile lol We use Zello in the TV studio so I can listen in to the Talkback on my way home so I can leave without worrying . Thanks for the review very helpful and informative 😎

    Unfortunately network radios doesn't cure the prevalent Radio amateurs disease...the inability to press the PTT switch and talk...once again it's the same minority talking and the majority only wanting to listen. .where did the ability to hold a conversation disappear to? 101 stations listening on channel 00 last night and only 2 stations talking...a case of audience participation desperately needed!!

    • @BlackHorseMilitia

      I agree to a degree here @MrRadiorobot. People do just listen in. On the flip side some of the admins and mods can be limp biscuits and are rude to new users. I have tried to be cleared to talk several times on those network radio channels mentioned in these videos and they keep me on the side lines. I even had one channel say they wouldn't let me in because on my profile picture I had a shemagh around my face lol. I changed it and still no go.

    That is a nice looking radio, great size screen, and the QYT style mic is great. I have one of those mics, they feel great in the hand.
    A lot of people (at least in the US) are giving network radios a hard time, I can't get enough. Obviously no good for emergency comms, but great for normal use, especially in a well covered area. They are starting to make hybrid radios now with Zello/UHF (though there is less support for VHF which I primarily use), so you won't have to carry 2 radios and a phone around anymore, and you basically have a nationwide repeater. With a Zello bridge you can even link your conventional 2 ways into the network.

    Great video as always Lewis.
    If I were a communications company operating radio networks commercially I would be getting rather worried about now.
    A huge advantage with these devices is the coverage within city buildings and structures.
    The network radios work perfectly fine inside underground rail systems and shopping centres where 2G/3G/4G LTE and soon 5G networks are installed. (And free WiFi!!)
    Spoke with a bicycle courier whose employer has dropped using traditional two ways in favour of network radios, purely because they can keep in touch with staff who may be inside buildings or areas of the CBD where 4G is adequately covered by micro/pico cells. The old two way would become useless in many areas of the city shadowed by high rise.
    As far as amateur use goes, well the same coverage principle applies, which is a huge advantage.
    But....no technical challenge, learning or skills required. No experimentation with antennas (what would the point be?) or gaining knowledge from making improvements to your setup to be had.
    And if most amateurs do migrate to network radios....it will be spectrum auction bonanza time at OFCOM/ACMA/FCC....etc...."What is the opening bid for 10Mhz worth of 70cm?"

    Although in a serious emergency (like grid outages) this would be pretty useless, as a day-to-day tool it would be kind of nice for the car. You could mount it in your car and have a GPS, an audio entertainment source, and a 2-way comms system. If they added in an analog/digital transceiver feature this thing would be amazing

    So from what I gather, certain cretinous HAMs have the self appointed authority to determine what other HAMs may use. it's not a ham radio and the majority of users aren't expecting it to be. My employer issues handheld network radios and something like this would be great for drivers compared to trying to feel around in the dark finding a HT.

    I was going to reply to a few people here, however, I thought I'd just make a post myself.
    As a professional radio technician, these units have been sold to a local trucking company to allow for wide area communications, tracking and direct communications with truck drivers.
    The majority of highways have GSM coverage, this allows control to contact drivers without calling them, they'll hear the message out loud. Having the screen visible and mounted as it does makes it exempt from mobile phone laws so drivers can use apps on it.
    You will see more of these mobile GSM radios coming onto the market soon.
    GSM/Wifi portable radios are great for hotels and resorts as the wifi which is prevalent allows for completely uninterrupted communications

    It's a TETRA radio, not a cell phone, not a ham radio. Same radio the police and ems use in Europe. This radio is encrypted, connects to the nearest cell tower, if none are nearby, it connects to the nearest cell phone/radio and there on it travels between cellphones/radio towers until it makes it to it's destination. In order to make it functional it needs to have a sim card and a phone number in order to make it two way so no one can listen to it's conversation. Both radios need to install an encryption key in order to decode the message.

    • @ep1929
      @ep1929 5 років тому

    This is a great alternative for "real" radio. normally limited in reach, unusable in builded areas. 15 to 20 km. Now worldwide! Arguments when system breaks down the is no comm possible are not valid. Walky talkies are also useless nowadays, no one listens. Great for proffesional use also. No dialing and everyone in the group hears and can talk back.

    • @shaungilmartin1505
      @shaungilmartin1505 5 років тому

      Quite,the tech isn't the point,the communication option is the point. One of the benefits of ham radio is the openness of the conversation. It creates diverse possibilities,rather than the isolated capabilities of mobile phone one to one use even in conference calls.

    PTT over Cellular as been around in the commercial/business world since 2007... It's Radio Amateurs who adopted it..
    I guess lack of knowledge, understanding and it's application kind of crept in.
    Manufactures are now more than happy to supply to this demand..

    ah unless you have a radio license I don't recommend using them as you have 2 options uhf and vhf
    there is likely versions of this 1 meant for uhf or the other being vhf, loosely based off dmr technology..

      i wouldn't use iit unless you are on wifi at home as data services aren't cheap for broadbanding applications and depending on zello and team speak and other comms chat programs on are on a mobile platform will dictate how this is used as some programs are built for use on the xg platform only and do not migrate well into wireless home networking platform from my experience with gplay and other services designed to run over 3g/4g/lte/lte-a networks

    Lewis, can you tell me the voltage & amperage of your supplied mains PSU on your N60 please? On your recommendation, I bought the sister radio the Anysecu 3G/W2 but it came without a PSU. I am assuming its around 12v and low amperage, maybe 1 ot 2 amps at most?

    • @RingwayManchester
      @RingwayManchester  5 років тому +1

      Hi Rob, It's definitely 12v, I'm not 100% on the amps but it's likely 1-2 like you said. I'm not nearby to check at the moment.

    • @robredridge1703
      @robredridge1703 5 років тому

      Thanks Lewis, I just had an idea. I watched your video again and paused it as you picked up and showed the PSU to the camera & took a screenshot of it & blew it up until I could read the label. Its a bit blurred at that magnification but you are right, it says 12 volt 1 amp..

    I take it this is the 3G version, they ran okay with early versions of zello but they are to underpowered for smooth operation of the latest versions of zello, 512mb of ram and a poor processer make this very laggy, £200 for a device with 512mb of ram and A very poor and cheap processor is not a good buy, the good news is that the later 4g version has 1gb of ram and much better processor so works with zello as it should.

      Voip system with a virtual button , nothing like cutting edge kit ;) it should be tap to talk , mainly because you can't push a mobile device screen, VOIP has it use's but not on a mobile phone, because it can only be used when the net work is up and running, and at that point it's easy'er just the phone, you know it makes sense ;)

    Not sure I get it, but if your cell network goes down, like some of the others have replied, yet you are still close to a open wireless network, you can still connect to Zello, correct?
    I can use this with my 'Secured Wireless Network' at home, without a cell data plan, correct?
    Also, are you able to use this as a CB radio?....I don't think this has the capability, or does it?
