I was a young white dude from the south, and while country was very common, rap was about just as common. Rock and metal were also pretty common. I didn't seek out metalheads, but somehow, all the friends I had liked metal.
I love that you're talking about this. This is a position I've held for forever- no one should feel "guilty" about listening to music that they like. I did a whole show for my college radio station one semester called Comfort Food, where I played so-called "guilty pleasure" genres (everything from boy bands to disco to mainstream pop) in an attempt to get people to feel less ashamed about what they like.
I am often ashamed to admit I like certain songs, So I just let everyone hear the music I listen to And just wait for them to turn it off. I've had a lot of mixed reactions, But generally their response always started with "why
This is a really interesting point that I didn't touch on. The literal definition of what the phrase should mean. Like when someone eats a lot of chocolate, that's their guilty pleasure because eating a lot of chocolate is physically bad for you. Great point
sirawesome hat but by listening to the music the artist does receive royalties so it could feel bad to essentially donate to a bad person. If you are listening to either illegally downloaded music or music you didn’t pay for via streaming service you are free from this though
There is a big difference about guiltypleasures that you are ”embarresed” about because of others opinion, and guilty pleasures because you don’t want to like an artist, edgy, quirky etc
right, I really hate the way logic goes about addressing criticism on his last project and he is super annoying throughout the whole thing but at the same time, I still find myself listening to it for the instrumentals/flows. his last album is a guilty pleasure bc I hate it but at the same time I listen to it p regularly and i hate that I still listen to it
Personally I use the term 'guilty pleasure' to refer to things that I enjoy even though I can acknowledge that they are not somewhat objectively good or don't have a lot of merit towards them.
I loved when I was younger. But then I never watched again and years later I saw a lot of people hating that movie in ways I kind of agree, so I guess it's a guilty pleasure for me
its a guilty pleasure only because i remember how much i liked it when i was like 10 and didnt have any proper understanding of film yet. i just thought it looked cool, spectacle over storyline really
I honestly dont understand the hatred for Billie Eilish. I mean I laugh at the memes about her and her audience and all, but if your an adult and dont check her music out just because you dont wanna be grouped in with a bunch of kids, thats just stupid. EDIT: Wow thanks for so many likes and replies you all! I didnt know there were so many varying opinions on her.
I did hear her songs and i dont like it, mix that with her being absolutely everywhere and is keep getting down to my throat its unreal and thats one of the reason i dont like her as an artist
wariodedede People can dislike her music, or even just decide to steer clear from listening to her, that doesn’t bother me at all. But people have made their entire personality about hating her and it’s led to adults on the internet bullying a child. It’s really sad. I’ve even seen people call her “the worst singer of out generation” which is just the biggest cry for attention because she has an undeniably great voice and catchy tunes
Okay, thats weird as hell. Started playing that song on Itunes, scrolled down and saw this comment. It is an awesome song though, and thats coming from someone that doesnt generally like dance/ rave music
My ten year old self was crying cause my favorite aunt moved to another state and listened to that on replay not understanding what I was feeling was not the same message as that song 😂
I used to be embarrassed that I like classical music. My friends always called me boring and weird for liking it even though Tchaikovsky absolutely slaps. So stupid
There's nothing to feel guilty about for appreciating classical music. It's renowned for a reason. The same cannot be said for today's computer-generated pop noise. This doesn't include the whole of electronica, but the simplistic mainstream hack stuff will be forgotten within five years if not five minutes.
@@izzysoup6207 honestly yeah don't smile at me was great, so many great songs and she seemed really solid back then. wwafawdwg? just seems really bland, I don't remember half the songs and it sounds like she's trying to hard to be edgy and appeal to the angsty teen fanbase.
The term 'guilty pleasure' came from people who have closed minded friends and they didn't wanna get teased. If you're first to point it out, then nobody else can shame your music tastes. The problem is you turn something from positive to negative and alienate other fans in the process
Right, I saw so many people commenting under Lana Del Rey's or Billie's more mellow, soft and sad songs that this is the music they listen to when 'their homies are not around' and I wouldn't be surprised if their homies listened to such songs too
virginwodka 『ANYUTA』Yeah, she owns the stage! She has this sort of unique energy and “punk rock spirit”, even now with her more electro pop sound... she’s retained it. It’s super infectious.
Thank you for this very needed video ! I think there s a lot oh misogyny in this concept of guilty pleasure ; for example, boybands, whose target audience is mostly teenagers, are hated 1)because people are stupid and think it is trendy and 2) because they don't want to be associated with something "girly" (despite the fact that a lot of 1D songs are genuinely great in my opinion, especially in their 2 last albums). I also feel like the fandoms play a huge role in this hatred. Like, sometimes people just associate the artists with their crazy fandoms (eg Billie Eilish, JB, 1D, kpop,....). What s more i guess people are trying to built an "original" identity by hating on mainstream stuff, without any regards for the actual quality of some mainstream bops.
Thanks for this video. Recently, I've been getting into a lot of Kanye West songs. Being a punk-alternative rock guy, I was kinda worried people were gonna be all weird thinking I like him. This vid was pretty motivating though, so thank you.
I clicked on this video saying to myself “oh no, he’s about to rip on my girl Billie Eilish”, but man was I pleasantly surprised. I literally just found your channel last night but you’ve quickly become one of my favorite content creators. I love your personality and outlook and only want to see more.
simran kaur same. i’m a hardcore stan because she’s more than “that artist that all the depressed girls follow” she’s literally an amazing person, she loves her fans, and she’s not afraid to be herself. im not depressed in the slightest (thank God) and i can still love billie and her brother’s creativity when it come to her music.
I just looked up the ''Guilty Pleasures'' Spotify playlist, and 2 of the songs there are ''Tiny Dancer'' by Elton John and ''Chop Suey!'' by SOAD. IN WHAT UNIVERSE ARE THEY GUILTY PLEASURES?! Putting all of LMFAO's music would've made 10 times more sense, honestly.
This is important for those who are fans of the Eastern Asian Pop scenes (Kpop, Jpop, Cpop, etc.). People (esp in USA) get quite a bit of flack for liking things in a different style/language.
i get your point man, there's a whole lot bad stereotype that are being associated with j-music (since it's heavily connected with anime industry), kind of hope such topic would be mention in this video
THANK YOU! I feel the same way about "guilty pleasure". It's bullshit to talk down what you like just because someone else might just find it weird or bad or something. I understand where the concept comes from, but I think it is just something so unessessary in our crazy world. Just enjoy what you enjoy and don't let someone else make you be embarrased about it.
Eh, I keep a “guilty pleasure” playlist not because I’m actually embarrassed by the music, but so I can remember to start a private Spotify session before I listen to it, not so that people don’t know, but so that it won’t affect my Spotify recommendations.
I think you're oversimplifying the way people enjoy music. You can like and dislike different parts of the same thing, or enjoy cringing at something, and that's where "guilty pleasure" comes from. Not everything fits neatly into "you like it or you don't".
This. For example I like "Bad Guy" because of the instrumental and hook, but overall I find the song to be very dumb and I probably wouldn't blast it around friends, but alone I'll listen to it.
You're right! I listen to elevator music and my favorite songs as a child and I enjoy it, but I really don't want others to know that that's what I listen to lol
i needed this. im known to produce hiphop/rnb stuff but i really enjoy listening to kpop too! i guess its just looked down upon by so many people and i feel really embarrassed when i talk about it and show how much i care for the genre ;-;
This video inspired me. I am a music student. My favorite artists are people like the Beatles, King Crimson, Vampire Weekend, the Raconteurs, and Hozier. I’m going to go listen to Fitz and the Tantrums now.
the gaming doggo Nah, the Jojo Stand was what originally led me to listen to King Crimson, and have since discovered that In the Court of the Crimson King truly slaps.
Can I just say thank you for actually talking about Billie in this video since she was in the thumbnail. So many people but her in the thumbnails of things and don’t even mention her in the video
HOW does this guy not have more subscribers? I've been watching through all his videos and the consistency of quality, even for videos covering topics I (at least initially) have little to no interest in, is insane. I hope he gets to a million soon - it's much deserved, but also, I just think a lot of people can benefit from his videos - this one in particular.
Love this Cause for real, it's all music. Often times the music that's most associated with "guitly pleasure" is often highly popular and the people hating it are either hating it because they're sick of hearing about it or they're stuck up music snobs who only listen to underground or experimental music. One day I might listen to The Residents, then go to The Beatles. Jandek to Anberlin. Throbbing Gristle to Incubus. Like whatever it's all good for it's own reasons.
This is a really fantastic video. I'm nearing 40 and am more into film than music, but it took me a really long time to really explain to people that I loved a lot of rom-coms back in the day - and to say "When Harry Met Sally" is a guilty pleasure would hurt my heart so much. It's just an incredible story with two incredible stars at the forefront with a director on his best hot streak. So, yeah, I loved watching your video rant and I'm with you - I listened to a lot of Boy Bands in High School and Girl Power stuff too, right alongside my interest in Tool and The Beatles. You like what you like!
I don’t like lil pump or Billie Eillish they just aren’t my thing more into britpop being from England but I agree that people should let people enjoy what they want
The hate against Billie Eilish actually annoys me because it's at its core just pretentious bullshit "criticism". Her lyrics are great, the sound of her music is nice and well done, and she sings just fine. There is no reason for her to get as much hate as she does. The hate that she receives is primarily because she was a teenage girl. That's it. THE most common "diss" that I hear abt her music is that it's for "teenage girls" or that it's "fake deep" but her music does not sound more childish or more immature than any other pop artist. In fact, when I first heard her music, I would not have given her the age she had, because this apparent "teenagerism" that everyone sees isn't actually there at all. It's criticizing her music BECAUSE of her age and not figuring out her age because of her music. If her songs came from a 25 yo I promise the criticism of being for teenagers and fake deep wouldn't have happened. Which is why I don't take seriously the people who pretend they are actually critiquing her music when they're truly just showing misogyny and a distaste for teenage girls being capable of clever and moving art.
@@nbashgshgshgshg9204 Lol, if that's an "essay" to you, you must have a very short attention span. It was only two paragraphs. If you don't have the time/interest to read the comment, I don't see why you would even bother commenting on it. I don't understand what's the point of telling someone their comment is too long if you aren't even interested in what they are saying. Nobody demands you to read comments, so why waste your time? If you don't find it interesting, then don't read it - problem solved. But usually people who complain about the length of a comment only do that because the comment made them feel uncomfortable, but they don't really know how to challenge its ideas, so they just try to dismiss those ideas by implying that the person was stupid because they wrote such a "long" comment and wasted their time doing so. But in reality, you are the only one who's wasting their time. I'm asking, was it worth your time replying to a comment that you didn't even find meaningful? (And now you have to keep on thinking it, because other people are replying to your comments, which means you are wasting even more of your time. So was it really worth it? Lol.)
@@nbashgshgshgshg9204 But wasted your time commenting on it. :) (And no, I didn't try to write a long reply on purpose - and I wouldn't even consider it as a long post. Arguing a point just requires using more than 10 words. Sorry if that's too long for your attention span.)
I love weird al and will tell people my favorite albums of his and my favorite polkas but if I'm at a party and someone hands me the aux cord I'm probably not going to play running with scissors at full volume
That's just being polite to what others prefer. Doesn't mean you're embarrassed. Like I LOVE Bo Burnham, but his music isn't really appropriate for a party. It's more of a thing I suggest to people who share my sense of humour.
Vocaloid is fucking amazing dude. So many artists were able to get themselves out there through using vocal synths. Kpop is also amazing. Red Velvet, 2ne1, and Loona have got to be my favorites from the entire genre though.
I didn't really like kpop, well, to be more specific mainly bts songs that were always charting so high on the Billboard. I didn't hate them, but I hated their overly obsessive fandom. However, later on I got hooked up on Blackpink, and prevented my friends from making fun of me for listening to kpop, and let them hear the girls' music. Now we're all fans. And we're not 'guilty' for blasting their songs loudly in a car
It's the fault of koreaboos with the Kpop thing. It really ruins your rep when people are acting crazy with your identity. I'd know, I was a 1D fan and I was so embarrassed by the things the fanbase did.
From what I’ve seen people use the term “guilty pleasure” to describe music they like but they are too worried about being looked down upon by other people to admit that they like it. They may also have a really pseudo intellectual view on what good music can be.
I use the term mainly for music, That is not well made But I enjoy nonetheless. An excellent example would be "Aussie Jingle Bells" It's made to be crappy and laughable, But I genuinely like it. Meanwhile "Beter in Bed" Is a professionally produced song, That I am not ashamed to admit I like, Despite the weird lyrics.
@@marmolejomartinezjoseemili9043 lyrics are an objective quality. Bad lyrics can ruin an entire song for me personally, but that's because I care about them. It's personal preference, I guess shit lyrics don't make a song bad for everyone.
@@Nakia11798 not really, as ive said, it isnt objectivelly bad, but i think that i should make it clear that not because its theres no objectivity on taste, means we shouldnt critique artists for stuff
I love this video. I just guess that people feel so timid about their interests because so much of music taste has been displayed to be associated with certain 'personalities' or 'types' of people. People online bully 14 year old girls for liking Billie Eilish for being 'basic', and there are girls who see that and think they don't want to be 'basic' so they deny their enjoyment of her music to avoid the labelling. I think that DEFINITELY carries out into adulthood, especially in this current social age. Just my two cents.
I think when people embrace the guilty pleasure mindset, it's a reaction to how people have reacted to us expressing our individual tastes. People can be so aggressive when it comes to simple differences in opinions. Even as an adult (I'm talking mid-thirties ppl) in a professional setting, I was once loudly berated in front of my coworkers by another coworker who is older than me, for mentioning in conversation, that I loved the show Friends. I've never backed down from sharing my taste in things, but I can see where others might be if they have ever had a similar experience (and I'm certain I'm not alone here).
I relate to this so hard omg I literally listen to mostly kpop but I listen to a lot of unknown underrated western songs as well (in my opinon of course lmao) and i get made fun alot lmaoooooo
I've never actually seen someone actually be feeling guilty for liking their "guilty" pleasure. It's been more of a way to say either "this song or artist is universally disliked or mocked, but i like them/this song", or "this is a song you probably wouldn't expect me to like". If someone says "this is my guilty pleasure", this literally would mean that they're confident enough to share it
That's true but I still think people use it too broadly. Like, if you listen to some ridiculous camp bullshit like "Blue (Da Ba Dee)", I could see that being a guilty pleasure. But I've seen people call "Take on Me" a guilty pleasure. Why? That's just a normal pop song. If you're supposed to feel guilty about A-Ha, what can you like besides Beethoven or sum shit?
Usually i seriously disagree with your hard stances on certain topics, but i seriously enjoy this video. Almost all my favorite music is considered "guilty pleasure" music.
It doesn't matter what you like, someone will always call it "cringy". That is exactly why you shouldn't give a fuck about it. Your enjoyment is more important than other people's approval.
I am just so glad that my Music Theory/Chorus teacher kept his mind open to so much music. I would come into class everyday, and I would just love the variety. I remember specifically him playing Beyonce, Destiny's Child, Avenged Sevenfold, some Biggie, MCR, and the list goes on. He told me this story of how his wife and him went to a My Chemical Romance show, they are both teachers, and they realized they were jamming out amongst a bunch of 13-17 year olds. They loved every moment. That really gave me a good confidence boost on liking music that would be, "guilty pleasures" to some audiences. Thank you, Mr. Doherty!
This 50 year old teenage metalhead of the 80s loves Billie Eilish. (So does his 62 yo wife). I found her middle of last year while trolling reaction channels for new music (found so many great artists that way). I am confident that her and Finneas are going to do amazing things. I would have bet a large sum of money that a teenage girl was not going to produce an album I was going to be excited about. I'd have lost that bet. They're going to put to something on to my all time top 10 list someday, if they haven't already. I'm a new subscriber today and you're definitely gonna help in my mission in finding all the greatest music regardless of genre or era. I got off the Top 40 train many years ago. It is today, as it has always been, mostly garbage. I can find new music without commercial radio. My playlist is super diverse, but there is so much music out there. Death Grips brought me to your channel today. Still digesting "The Money Store", but they're super intriguing. I think I'm going to like it here.
Some of my favorite guilty pleasures, One Directions final album after Zayn left and Kpop (groups like Girls Generation, EXO and BlackPink). They are guilty for me because I am a Mexican cowboy from Sinaloa and I am supposed to only like Norteño and Banda music which I do but when I am alone I like to blast some The Boys and Best Song Ever.
I listen to lots of stuff from Ska to hip-hop, jazz, prog rock, etc., But I also am really into Kpop (and Jpop) and have been for a long time. As a teen, admitting that I was really into Girls' Generation around my friends that are really into tappy tap mathrock type stuff like DGD and Chon seemed like "Oh, they'll tease me for that", but in reality, my friends are like "Oh yeah, this slaps. Stan Red Velvet"
Thank you for putting out these videos. Maybe the best explanation to guilty pleasure especially when it comes to music would be ones societal image of what is considered cool or executable. If you find a song is humbling and sweet then it’s a guilty pleasure or if it brings out a different aspect of ones character which is hidden from society. Good music is good music regardless of which Category. My guilty pleasure song when I was young was whistle while you work from “Snow White” corny( maybe) cheesy (defiantly)! But it got me through many days of choirs and nights of homework!
Ironically, when people discuss their "guilty pleasures", in my experience at least, they never actually seem genuinely embarrassed that they enjoy the things they enjoy and it's fairly rare that people actually judge you for your "guilty pleasures". There are elitist, insecure assholes who do judge people for the entertainment they enjoy, but those aren't usually the ones talking about "guilty pleasures". I think that's because people use the term "guilty pleasure" about things they feel like they should feel embarrassed about enjoying but don't actually feel embarrassed about enjoying. If they were actually embarrassed, why would they bring it up? I think a lot of people have internalized ideas about what sort of entertainment and art they're supposed to enjoy and talking about "guilty pleasures" is a way to get around that. Asking someone what their "guilty pleasures" are is kinda like saying "hey can we talk about music but not be pretentious dicks about it."
I think we should stay objective when it comes to reviewing or analysing media but with music it's hard to say since there isn't really a lot of objectivity in it in the first place. It's very subjective how we judge songs and/or artists. Also yeah don't be afraid of what you like it doesn't really mean anything if you like a song.
Recently I got back to an artist i've been trying to avoid a lot bc of it's "Girly" or "Weird" approach on music and that's lady gaga. I listened non stop all the singles from The fame, The fame monster and Born this way in my childhood and I left during the artpop era (not for the drama and backlash she had tho). I tried every type of music so I could see which one is good for me. I first tried Kpop which I kind of now hate that moment bc I remember faking that I liked BTS just to be accepted in my group of friends. Then I tried music from Billie Eilish and Melanie Martinez which to this day I still like but not as much as when I just discovered them. And then I somehow saw the video of G.U.Y (a song from artpop) which i've been trying to avoid for a VERY long time and i just... loved it. It was a feeling I haven't felt in a long time, I felt like I discovered myself again and started listening to the whole album. EVERY song was good, I never thought no one could have had a better artistic aproach as Gaga did. The only thing I didn't like about the album was not bc of the album itself but bc Gaga collaborated with R.Kelly which was known for some... weird stuff.
Thank you for this video now I have a good reason to blast Speedin' Bullet 2 Heaven in my car with my friends while I descend into insanity. But for real though, once I was scared of saying I did like some artists of the early 2010s like Lorde, Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift because pop was seen as "Oh only girls like that stuff" "Real men like rock, rock and only rock" Now that I'm 18 I listen to a lot of different genres like pop, rap, metal, 90s rock, grunge, experimental hip hop, even international music. I have no idea what I could class a "Guilty Pleasure" besides bands that I hate but have one or two good songs and even then that doesn't qualify one.
Being a dude from the south, who somewhat fucks with country music, I have friends that are really all about country music. Like so about it theyd consider Brad Paisleys "Accidental Racism" a good song lol. But I love dark pop music like Health and Youth Code, I fucking love Depeche Mode and the Smith's, and dont even get me started on Odd Future. No matter what tho they dont get it I got some that ain't judgmental and some that are. So the fact u used the Country music example hit close to home my guy 😂😂
just listened to the "guilty pleasures" playlist and its a non-stop bop-fest, should be renamed to most iconic songs of all time playlist boiiiiii!!!!! I recommend it!!
I have actually been thinking about this topic for a while cause I always viewed music as so subjective that I find it hard to see why some people would hold strongly negative opinions on music.
I think the whole point is that it's not real embarrassment. My whole family hates Phil Collins, I love Phil Collins so he a guilty pleasure. I'm not ACTUALLY embarrassed by that fact bit it's also ecome a bit within the family in various ways. It's also a means to bond over music. I have a group of friends who mostly all hate muse....again, I love muse so in the same way as ano e with them it's a guilty pleasure. But my saying loudly and proudly that I love muse in the middle of one of their light hearted batch fests had another member of the group say me too! It became a source of banter and fun the whole night. If someone is actually embarrassed, yeah that's dumb....but in its most common usage I think it's not meant to be taken that seriously. It's more of a scouce of having a specific type of conversation. Think pineapple on a pizza. Of course anyone isnperfectly allowed to like or dislike whatever they like or dislike.....but it's still funny to imply that if youmlike pineapple on a pizza then you're worse than Hitler. BTW...I love pineapple on a pizza!
Im a kpop listener and BTS fan (I say kpop listener because Im not necessarily a fan of kpop as a whole). People often have something to say about it whenever I mention it much moreso than if I mention liking any other genre (though kpop is not a genre). Even if I say I listen to nearly every genre of music too they like to focus on the fact I like kpop for some reason. I've been told 'you don't seem like someone who'd like kpop' (probably because they saw me as a smart and mature person so it doesn't fit their stereotype of what a kpop fan would be like...). Being a part of the BTS fandom I've seen many other fans talk about their experience with bullying from school, friends and their own family over liking them. We have members from every country in the world and some other countries put far more pressure onto people for what they like than in the West. Its completely understandable that they would not be comfortable mentioning what music they like because it potentially could even be a threat to their own safety. The thing is if I mentioned being a fan of a Western pop star it'd be 100% understandable and expected (as a female in my 20s) but kpop which is pretty much just pop from a non-English speaking country is apparently too weird for some reason. The thing is though, no one has any idea why I like and listen to kpop and BTS and no one ever even asks me they just come to their own conclusions about it (this goes for all music too). Mostly I avoid mentioning it because I just don't want to deal with the expected jokes and comments people make about it as if I asked or gave a shit about their opinion. I could make harsh commentary about their music taste too but I don't because I respect individuals taste and I know they have their own reasons for liking it. In fact I find it interesting to know why people like certain songs and artists and what it means to them, because I love to see how art affects people and to see people be passionate over it even if I don't share the same sentiment. But, I'm probably a minority cause it seems like what everyone else wants to do is fight over who has the superior taste in music which is fucking pointless and stupid.
I don't have any "guilty pleasure" music! I listen to various types of music and I'm really proud of my music taste! I don't care if others don't like what I like!
I feel like anything I listen to that is outside the norm is seen as a guilty pleasure. I love the Mountain Goats and Modern Baseball, but they aren't radio music so people look at me weird when I tell them to listen to something different
Whenever people ask me what my ‘guilty pleasures’ are, I just swap the question for, ‘What would I be most surprised to learn you listen to?’ Yeah, the idea of them is dumb, but I don’t blame people for being afraid to admit they like a song or artists. It’s likely come from people being assholes and not just letting others like what they like. I think it goes without saying, that along with, “Like what you like,” conversely, “Don’t shit on other people for what they like.”
Tbh I kinda feel that what I do is a guilty pleasure, I really enjoy modelling, I'm not good at it but I enjoy it, but because its not super popular, I kinda hide it apart from uploading videos to this channel. Also I'm a new sub, hi!
But something that I AM embarrassed about should be called be called a guilty pleasure Like anime music. I’ll listen to it and enjoy it. I don’t blast it in the car with people.
The Spotify guilty pleasures playlist features: Whip It- DEVO Loser- Beck Chop Suey- System of a Down Rockafeller Skank- Fatboy Slim Rock Lobster- B52's Beverly Hills- Weezer Tiny Dancer- Elton John Get Up Offa That Thing- James Brown Our House- Madness Tainted Love- Marilyn Manson Relax- Frankie Goes To Hollywood You Shook Me All Night Long- AC/DC Daddy Cool- Boney M My Band- D12 Stayin' Alive- Bee Gees Like come on do I just have really unfashionable taste or is that not an excellent playlist?
@@NihilSludgeMonkey The only reason I can imagine it has ended up here is because System are considered a Nu Metal band and Nu Metal is mostly looked upon with distaste by people who consider themselves trendy. It is ridiculous though in reality nobody would feel embarrassed about Chop Suey except maybe like MAJOR hipsters, Toxicity was one of the most groundbreaking metal albums ever made.
For me my guilty pleasure song is something more direct and personal as I feel like I’m opening myself up directly to that friend or listener, exposing my insecurities, secrets and fear that the other might just accidentally let his mouth slip. Because it’s liked by many, but not discussed openly between peers, I don’t really care what you say about it. What I love is “Hate Myself” by NF. Which I would recommend you to listen to.
For me, as a guy, I would refer to Ariana Grande's music as a quilty pleasure of mine, because I'm a fan of hers despite not being her target audience (all of her songs are thematically feminine and written for women/girls) but despite that I still enjoy and listen to her music. I wouldn't refer to her music as bad, quite the opposite but when it comes to me specifically, its quilty pleasure music. Great video though, you made some great points
you're a periphery demographic then. Who often actually _like_ the music more than some of the core demographic, who may listen to it because their friends do.
The term is getting on my nerves too. I mainly listen to 80s and 90s pop from artists like the Backstreet Boys, Britney, Whitney etc. And most of my mates listen to mainly rap and grime (I’m in the UK) which is really different to my choices. I’m always pretending to be really into it and even listen and try to learn the lyrics just to fit in but although I respect the artists and genre, I’m not a big fan. I never offer to go on the aux or I reject from playing my playlists because I know I’ll turn a lot of heads and get laughed at about it. Unfortunately it’s still a big thing as the majority of people these days look down on others who like music they don’t like.
Alfo! I’ve been waiting for your next video so I could mention an artist I just found: Alabama Shakes. They’ve apparently won a few Grammys so maybe it doesn’t fit in “songs you might not know” but it definitely fits in songs that I did not know haha. Anyways hope you love them if you haven’t heard of them before!
Oh also their lead singer, Brittany Howard, came out with an album last week that may fit with “songs you might not know” even better. I recommend the song “stay high”
For me a guilty pleasure song is one where I know it’s a shitty song but I openly enjoy it anyways. For me that’s magnolia by playboi carti, the song is so shit but I love it anyways. Very good video
Nice things about being an adult: you just like things without worrying if it's cool or fits into an image you're trying to present because you give zero shits
I’ll see if I can tackle this from a different in terms of “guilty pleasures”. So from a psychological perspective, we typically identify group in which we belong and subscribe to those certain beliefs. If you grew up as a southern white boy, the musical identity that is most commonly chosen amongst that demographic would be country and folk. Having identified with that group and adopted those beliefs, there are always certain social scripts by which each social group abides by. Deviating from the norm of that group would result in betrayal and ostracization from that previous in-group that the individual was a part of. So in this case, country music is the norm and deviating from it and admitting you may be interested in say “rap” would result in criticism and later abandonment from that prior group at the most extreme levels. Being that as social creatures we seek to be part of a social identity, we would risk our own personal pleasures in order to stay with that community for the support it provides them. We typically mature out of this view as we broaden our worldview as long as we experience different realities and adopt them or reject and so on. I can go on more explaining this, but i am quite tired being that its 1 in the morning . However, hopefully this is a different perspective that one can possibly see to explain why we develop “guilty pleasures” and the significance that identity plays within that intersectionality

As a young white dude from the south, I can say I agree

I was a young white dude from the south, and while country was very common, rap was about just as common. Rock and metal were also pretty common. I didn't seek out metalheads, but somehow, all the friends I had liked metal.
I love that you're talking about this. This is a position I've held for forever- no one should feel "guilty" about listening to music that they like. I did a whole show for my college radio station one semester called Comfort Food, where I played so-called "guilty pleasure" genres (everything from boy bands to disco to mainstream pop) in an attempt to get people to feel less ashamed about what they like.

People's guilty pleasures should be music from literal bad people. People should feel guilt when listening to Chris Brown.
This is a really interesting point that I didn't touch on. The literal definition of what the phrase should mean. Like when someone eats a lot of chocolate, that's their guilty pleasure because eating a lot of chocolate is physically bad for you. Great point
Except that the music itself did not commit any crime or harm anyone, the artist did.
sirawesome hat but by listening to the music the artist does receive royalties so it could feel bad to essentially donate to a bad person. If you are listening to either illegally downloaded music or music you didn’t pay for via streaming service you are free from this though
@@ril3yjordan People doing bad things doesn't disqualify from them receiving payment for their work. That's not how justice works.

I think you're oversimplifying the way people enjoy music. You can like and dislike different parts of the same thing, or enjoy cringing at something, and that's where "guilty pleasure" comes from. Not everything fits neatly into "you like it or you don't".
Yes! That's a good point. I define guilty pleasures as something that's cringey or just dumb but enjoy it nevertheless.
This. For example I like "Bad Guy" because of the instrumental and hook, but overall I find the song to be very dumb and I probably wouldn't blast it around friends, but alone I'll listen to it.

I feel zero guilt about liking Billie Eilish. She is fire
Love this
Cause for real, it's all music.
I have ALWAYS wanted someone to make a video about this topic
This is a really fantastic video. I'm nearing 40 and am more into film than music, but it took me a really long time to really explain to people that I loved a lot of rom-coms back in the day - and to say "When Harry Met Sally" is a guilty pleasure would hurt my heart so much. It's just an incredible story with two incredible stars at the forefront with a director on his best hot streak. So, yeah, I loved watching your video rant and I'm with you - I listened to a lot of Boy Bands in High School and Girl Power stuff too, right alongside my interest in Tool and The Beatles.

Lol.)

From what I’ve seen people use the term “guilty pleasure” to describe music they like but they are too worried about being looked down upon by other people to admit that they like it. They may also have a really pseudo intellectual view on what good music can be.

Thank you for validating my love for ram ranch
I think when people embrace the guilty pleasure mindset, it's a reaction to how people have reacted to us expressing our individual tastes. People can be so aggressive when it comes to simple differences in opinions. Even as an adult (I'm talking mid-thirties ppl) in a professional setting, I was once loudly berated in front of my coworkers by another coworker who is older than me, for mentioning in conversation, that I loved the show Friends. I've never backed down from sharing my taste in things, but I can see where others might be if they have ever had a similar experience (and I'm certain I'm not alone here).
Yeah I got shit for watching The Big Bang Theory to the end, for sure
I relate to this so hard omg I literally listen to mostly kpop but I listen to a lot of unknown underrated western songs as well (in my opinon of course lmao) and i get made fun alot lmaoooooo
To me, "guilty pleasure" means you like something, *yet* at the same time, you're aware of it's flaws.

I am just so glad that my Music Theory/Chorus teacher kept his mind open to so much music. I would come into class everyday, and I would just love the variety. I remember specifically him playing Beyonce, Destiny's Child, Avenged Sevenfold, some Biggie, MCR, and the list goes on.
He told me this story of how his wife and him went to a My Chemical Romance show, they are both teachers, and they realized they were jamming out amongst a bunch of 13-17 year olds.
But for real though, once I was scared of saying I did like some artists of the early 2010s like Lorde, Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift because pop was seen as "Oh only girls like that stuff" "Real men like rock, rock and only rock"
Now that I'm 18 I listen to a lot of different genres like pop, rap, metal, 90s rock, grunge, experimental hip hop, even international music. I have no idea what I could class a "Guilty Pleasure" besides bands that I hate but have one or two good songs and even then that doesn't qualify one.
So nice of the deaf community to give their input on this topic
I enjoy the song “look at your game girl” by Charles Manson. THAT is a guilty pleasure.
Great video! You should make one where you talk about the band Barrie, im interested in what you would think of their music
Yes I love them
I don't have any "guilty pleasure" music!
Whenever people ask me what my ‘guilty pleasures’ are, I just swap the question for, ‘What would I be most surprised to learn you listen to?’
Yeah, the idea of them is dumb, but I don’t blame people for being afraid to admit they like a song or artists.
But something that I AM embarrassed about should be called be called a guilty pleasure
Like anime music. I’ll listen to it and enjoy it. I don’t blast it in the car with people.
The Spotify guilty pleasures playlist features:
Whip It- DEVO
Loser- Beck
Chop Suey- System of a Down
Rockafeller Skank- Fatboy Slim
Rock Lobster- B52's
Beverly Hills- Weezer
Tiny Dancer- Elton John
Get Up Offa That Thing- James Brown
Our House- Madness
Tainted Love- Marilyn Manson
Relax- Frankie Goes To Hollywood
You Shook Me All Night Long- AC/DC
Daddy Cool- Boney M
My Band- D12
Stayin' Alive- Bee Gees
Like come on do I just have really unfashionable taste or is that not an excellent playlist?
@@NihilSludgeMonkey The only reason I can imagine it has ended up here is because System are considered a Nu Metal band and Nu Metal is mostly looked upon with distaste by people who consider themselves trendy. It is ridiculous though in reality nobody would feel embarrassed about Chop Suey except maybe like MAJOR hipsters, Toxicity was one of the most groundbreaking metal albums ever made.
Thank you for this as someone who is an adult and owns multiple Katy Perry albums On vinyl
Thats the point of this video . Dont give a shit about what others think. Who cares if youre not the target audience, enjoy it and be proud of it !
you're a periphery demographic then.
Awesome video, now please excuse me as I go listen to Photograph by Nickelback.
I've seen them in concert! Great group
For me a guilty pleasure song is one where I know it’s a shitty song but I openly enjoy it anyways. For me that’s magnolia by playboi carti, the song is so shit but I love it anyways. Very good video
Thanks! But do you see where I'm coming from?? Why call Magnolia shitty if you love it? Wouldn't it be better to just say that you love it?
Alfo Media I totally do, I don’t think people should be ashamed of what they listen to at all
Nice things about being an adult: you just like things without worrying if it's cool or fits into an image you're trying to present because you give zero shits
What was the "factory plant" thing Billie Eilish
It’s industry plant
@@FirstLast-kx9uj ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh, that's hilarious
First Last oh I thought it was climate change wtf.
@@lunarstellarsolar Billie Eilish caused climate change. You didn't get the memo?
Shes definitely an industry plant lol
Whenever people ask me what my ‘guilty pleasures’ are, I just swap the question for, ‘What would I be most surprised to learn you listen to?’
Yeah, the idea of them is dumb, but I don’t blame people for being afraid to admit they like a song or artists. It’s likely come from people being assholes and not just letting others like what they like.
I've been making this very same rant for years, with 1/100000 of the eloquence. Thank you so much 💓
