I have seen way too many youtubers grinning like idiots to this piece.
It's an incredibly complex piece that weighs on your conscience and makes you question the cost of our freedoms.
Thank you for giving it the thought and understanding it deserves. ❤️
This song is deep! It hit home 🙌🏾
The purpose of war is not freedom. That is just marketing. The purpose of war is making a small number of wealthy people wealthier.
Well put and tracie you genuine your emotions real i felt the same listening to this the first time the movie is intense too billies got a gun so emotional hold my breath as i wish for death make me remeber rememberance days as a child hearing the war vets ell theor story and till this day i cant hear amazing grace on bagpipes with out balling my eyes out thinking what them.ppl went thru for are freedom volunterring to die or even wish they had died for are freedom today know they're all dead them selfs they are the heros who shouldnt be forgotten theh are one

Some who actually paid attention to the images and the lyrics. Wow. Great reaction
One of the few reactions that show the listener has a brain, heart and humanity.
I know, right.
So true, you could spot the phonies to someone who really took in the music and video.
Thanks for this beautiful and heartwarming comment ❤️ made my day
Thanks so glad you relate 🥺
I have watched about 20 reaction videos to Metallica "One", and you're one of only2 that have actually seen the lyrics. Your reaction was appropriate, and beautiful. Its a beautiful song about awful things. Thank you for actually knowing what the song is about.
Also, I highly recommend Master of Puppets from Metallica.
Facts
Thanks so much, this did hit home 🥺
I think that’s the way Metallica wanted people to react. War is horrible.
Especially at a time when the Iran-Iraq wars were going on...
That song gave, veteran's Day a whole new meaning.
Without war we would all be speaking german.
Lol, omg I’ll take this nicely but I wished we could all speak English tho or Just one language. I picked English cos it’s my most fluent
This song hit home. They made a serious point 🥺
“This young man will be as unfeeling - as unthinking - as the dead; until the day he joins them.”
I remember the first time I heard this song and saw the video. It was late at night on MTV. It scared me, made me sick… but still I couldn’t turn away. As a teen of the 80s we were pretty shielded to the horror of war. Dessert Storm hadn’t happened. The Berlin wall had fallen. Our parents while not rich, we’re not poor. We were a generation allowed to just enjoy our youth. For the most part our parents shielded us. We read about war but I don’t think you really understand until your generation or your children go through war. Then this song hit MTV and it really had a way of bringing a generation into the horrors of war. It is a very powerful song.
My children are now in their 20s l have found myself telling my son how sorry I am we trusted politicians who took us into endless war, believing we were doing it for righteous reasons. To liberate people not kill for profit.
Fact: This song got a Grammy award.
Well deserved.
And Metallica deserved that Grammy award
I love how right in the breakdown James gets in the mood, like "fuck it let's jam" in front of the grammys, it was inconic how excited he got
They didn't win an award for this. They were nominated, but lost that year. To Jethro Tull.
They performed this song live at the Grammy's, but they didn't win. Hetfield was interviewed on the way out, asking about the verdict of who won the award. He said, "We got to play."
Metallica finally won a Grammy for the Black album. And a few more afterwards.
@@adameves5970 Correct!👍🏻
When he is begging and pleading for help and calling out to his mother. Gets me every time
Still gives me goosebumps like It did when I saw the video as a young kid.
Followed by "now the world has gone...". Absolutely perfect
Emotional and thought-provoking.... that's why it's called HEAVY metal.
Despite the harshness of the music style, many metal songs are like this, especially early Metallica songs. Disposable Heroes and For Whom the Bell Tolls are anti-war. Fade to Black deals with suicide. Master of Puppets is about addiction. Harvester of Sorrow is about domestic/child abuse. Blackened is about pollution and destruction of the environment.
There's much more to metal than most non-metal fans realize
Most people who actually sit down and listen to metal in good faith end up respecting it if not exactly enjoying it. Metal/hardcore has been my favorite genre for the past 5 years now in large part due to the unapologetic nature of the lyrics, not needing to worry about pleasing an audience and making art that you truly want to express
There are very few music videos that impacted me as much as when I first saw this as a teenager, years ago. This song defines living Hell.
Twenty-five years later, as a veteran that has experienced war, I lost friends and I was fortunate to make it home and they did not.
I still cannot watch this video without tears, but thankful I did not have this as my fate.
Rest in Peace Chris, I miss you everyday, brother, I will see you on the other side someday.
Deep song🥺
Wow, you figured this out pretty fast. Love your reaction, beautiful queen. Yeah, it is VERY anti-war. The entire point is what generals and world powers think of the "pawns" they send out. The album was called "Justice For All" ironically to mean things like "This soldier never had justice". All the songs are examples of total injustice in the name of "Justice" and world control.
It’s about a story of a guy who lost all his arms and legs, as well as all his senses and is trapped inside himself wishing for death. “Now the world is gone I’m just one” I forgot the name of the actual story it’s based on but you can look it up.
@@weignerleigner3037 a movie from the 70’s based on the book Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo
“They just went ahead and chopped off everything”
The guy that worked on the video. And I believe they had an interview with him when Rolling Stones writer David Fricke did his ...And Justice For All anniversary interview with the band. But he nailed it with the clips of the movie. Which MetallicA owns the rights to, and actually One is the theme for the movie. 30+ years after it was released. Thats insane! The part where he says "Father! Father! Im in terrible trouble and I need help!" Just as the machine gun riff is taking off. Then the officers are reading his morse code head banging abilities "What is he saying?" Its SOS, HELP! Says kill me, over and over again. Kill me! That was just so much emotional penetration.
@@MetallicAAlabamA i hear you!
so many "awesome" quotes in that movie.
combined with the music its honestly hard to hold the emotions in check and not tear up.
the way he calls out for his father for help is gutwrenching! every time.
One of my biggest fears is going blind. that thought alone can freak me out.
loosing hearing, speach, legs and arms is pure HORROR unimaginable horror.
@@elysium30 I have always told people that MetallicA has taught me more about death, fear, anger, destruction, drugs, energy, and straight up music. Than anything or anyone has in my life. I owe alot to these guys. Keep banging that head to the metal my friend!
🤘💀🤘
"If I had arms I could kill myself. If I had legs I Could run away. If i had a voice I could talk and be some kind of company for myself. I could Yell for help but nobody would help me." That part drives me to tears every time
Deep stuff!!

Hi Tracie, your reaction to this song is amazing, welcome to the family of Metallica! Try for next, if you want, "Fade To Black", another beautiful song from Metallica! Thank you!
I just watched a group of guys react to this...never paid attention to the lyrics, never tried to understand the big picture. This reaction was a refreshing breath of fresh air. Thank you. I just subscribed.
Seeing it live...with a sea of Metallica fans is something special. I got to do it 4 times - when I, and Metallica were much younger.
I’ve heard this song a million times and you made me cry lol.. your a beautiful pure person ..
This is so powerful and emotional song ,amazing reaction sist
I remember hearing this in '88 as a young lad and it still hits as hard today! Loved seeing your emotions coming through! Metal music is deeper than people think
Honestly! It’s a weird truth! Before reaction when I hear Metal i would never think of it in any way relating to life and meaningful lyrics 🥺
This one was deep
One of my favourite songs thanks for this
The cut scenes and dialogue are from a movie called Johnny Got His Gun, 1971. Anti-war movie
I’m crying because that was your first viewing. This is the most powerful song in my world. It has been since it came out and watching you see for the first time might have made me cry again
I've watched so many reactions to this video and everyone misses the lyrics they're just mesmerized by the instrumentals but thank you for hearing those lyrics I feel like so many people miss them those lyrics are so deep and so meaningful it makes me mad when people miss them
Thank you for actually listening to the song, and understanding the lyrics, so many people miss the pain in this song.
Awesome review. This song is a metal masterpiece.
I just fell in love with her. ❤️☮️
I’ve been to rowdy parties that would go completely dead silent when this song comes on. For the WHOLE SONG. SILENCE.
Your reaction made ME cry… and I’ve heard this song about a trillion times. Welcome to the realization that metal is NOT just “noise”… not even close.
Actual war is horror. Respect to our Veterans. Stand proudly for them. Stand.
This is the best example for understanding lyrics...thank you!!!!!!
A beautiful and heartfelt reaction to a great song.
It’s very unsettling and the lyrics are deeply moving. Lyrics like: “trapped in myself, body my holding cell.” War is hell, and they place that fact front and centre for all to see.
Everyone that commented on this video hit the nail on the head your the only one that reacts to this song and actually gets it. You are a beautiful human being. I love you.
Great reaction. The amount you took away from that in one listen is phenomenal. Well done. ❤️
There is no band like metallica. The greatest band in the world

Tracie, I wanted to thank you for taking this song seriously and actually listening to it. So many other UA-camrs disrespect its message, where as you did not. Thank you. I am sorry that it upset you, but you did a better job of listening to it than I did........ This album came out when I was a young man (still a teen). While I do love Metallica, if I had been a smart man I would have stayed away from the Army. I was not a smart man...... And now I carry 4 bracelets on my left wrist, and 7 stripes on my right forearm. I wish I had listened as closely as you did.
Thanks so much for this beautiful message, I’m glad you liked my reaction. Thanks for viewing 🥰
Thank you for my freedom 🙏 brother! God bless...from Wyoming USA 🇺🇸 🤠
The first adult book I ever read was Jonny Got His Gun. And it was thanks to MetallicA and this song. This song and coming to realization of its meaning changed and shaped my world at such a young age, words cannot describe. I'm thankful my mother didn't deprive me of this music at 10 like so many did in 1990. I don't know who I would be as person today with MetallicA. They were so influential in such a good way intentional or not they help shape me into a good person. Well read and musically inclined. I've been playing instruments and reading ever since.
Wow 🥺❤️
“Epic” is the right word. It’s about a severely injured veteran but a truly epic song can have different meanings to different people,
I recommend "Disposable Heroes" (lyric video) by Metallica. It's a out how soldiers are viewed as disposable and musically, it's one of their best!
Metallica bought the rights for the film used in the video "Johnny Got His Gun" so they wouldn't have to pay or have anyone interfere with the music video.
Great song. Great reaction.
I was in 7th grade when this video came out,...and I wore the t-shirt for the song to school and nearly got kicked out for it saying "Hell" on it... I probably learned more about life from music, than that crappy school had to offer me.
You get it,... not a lot of people do,.. it shows you are an empathetic, intelligent person.... and we need more people like you sharing your voices.
You definitely have one of the BEST reactions I've seen. You're amazing! Hugs and greetings from El Salvador!!!
Awww thanks, sending lots of love and virtual hugs your way
Great reaction! Thank you!❤️
This is one of the best reactions to a very emotional song. Too many UA-camrs are not really getting what's it's actually about. The horrors of war and the awful cost paid by those who choose to defend our freedoms beautifully juxtaposed between James Hetfields voice and the scenes from the movie. Your reaction is the right one. Much respect
Thank you for your heartfelt reaction and appreciative words. You were so invested throughout and paid attention to everything, one of the absolute best reactions I've ever seen to the One music video.
All of our brothers and sisters who have fallen in battle for the rest of us. Where we go one we go all. Thank you for your true show of emotion. God Bless...
this song forever brings my insanity sanity and a peace of mind when needed, James song writing forever saved me
Powerful message. Powerful song. Powerful video. War is hell. For some, it never ends.
I am so glad that you understand this song. Great reaction.
Thank you so much for a fantastic reaction. Most reactors watch this video and bob their head without ever grasping the concept. You have done justice to a legendary song 👍
Thank you for your epic reaction
now that's a proper reaction. you understood the lyrics plus the dialogue.
most reactors can't do that when watching this for the first time. thank you.
I was in the Army from 1996 to 2017 and did 12 combat deployments during that time. I highly advise AGAINST going to war if it's avoidable. Fantastic reaction by the way.
Y’all! Everyone come see this comment, coming from someone who has experienced it first hand 😢😢 i hope war is never considered an option ever again, it does more harm than good
Hatred, greed and the lust for power and control will always exist as long as man exists, therefore war will never end.
Only the dead have seen the end of war - Plato .
Thank u for this freedom bro
As a young kid who enlisted in the US military, I was always so full of pride, never thought of stuff like what Metallica play about. I was introduced to them after I was in.
Over the years, and with their music, and all the fucked up shit... their words almost felt prophetic.
Great reaction I've been listening to this for thirty some years and it still gets to me
Also, the band wanted to use the footage from a movie called "Johnny got a gun"9sic) in order to use the clips in the video they purchased the movie.
Beautifully done Tracie
Yes, yes, yes!!! 🤘🤘🤘More mandatory Metallica! Oh, you look fanfreakintastic ❤️🥰😍
I always thought of the break down part at 7:17 was like morse code with the guitars and drums.
It is
The victim is moving his head in Morse code and headbanging to the song at the same time.
You are a very intelligent and creative woman because just one listen and you understand the pain of the human condition, war is horrendous and thus band said no war. It's a good thing they did. You are cool.
Walker Maguire called "they call me doc" it was written from a soldier/medic's point of view, and was written with a Veteran who was in counseling for P.T.S.D...from Wyoming USA 🇺🇸 🤠
I've watched a number of reactions to this song.
Nobody who's watched this video for the first time hasn't been emotionally effected by it.
It's sweet to see such an honest loving reaction to this, I've loved this song for over 20 years, sometimes I forget how great it is.
I love your purity. Great job
loved....loved.....loved your reaction to this ... most younger people don't get it the 1st time they hear this song.... very impressed by you
Thanks much for watching so glad you relate
Their lyrics and the way they present them is the reason they still sell out shows to this day.
This is one of those metallica songs where I'm headbanging but I also have a sad look on my face. I always get a little emotional when I play this on guitar. thank you for your great reaction. 👍
Great reaction your awesome
Thanks for viewing 🥰so glad you like
I've lived just like the video. I WAS in a COMA because of skateboarding which took place a week before the record & video came out.
I don't know anything about war. I'm not a veteran.
But for me, this song is about depression. The isolation and loneliness that comes with it. The anguish that comes with feeling like every person in your life that you've alienated might as well be an amputated limb.
Wonderful reaction video, thank you.
Dyers Eve is a killer, if you're in the mood to get into getting pissed at your parents.
Wow another perspective , super deep
You're not entirely wrong though. You're just missing the firsthand experience of war is all. This song isn't just about the war he was in, this song is about the perception and emotional state he was left with afterwards. He was unable to talk, hear, see, feel, or smell and was stuck in a state of complete and total loneliness that no one ever really experiences because no matter how depressed and alone we feel we always have the ability to reach out and communicate with others. This is taking that small ability away as well until you can't even be there for yourself; "If I had a voice I could talk and be some kind company for myself." And how it sends him very, very rapidly down a very long and dark spiral. So your assessment isn't entirely inaccurate. Also this song, and video were based on the book Johnny Got His Gun and the clips from the movie of it, which is what happens to Johnny after he steps on a landmine in the war.
Also, also Dyer's Eve is fire af, and you may experience either anger at your parents or a catharsis when you hear the heavy instruments and then hear James Hetfield saying some of the same things you've felt towards your parents. Definitely worth buckling yourself up for the ride though.
@@xiphos8219 True. Good perspective. Sometimes depression and loneliness can be like you have lost your arms and legs and voice. Also the feeling that no one would listen if you’d call for help.
WW1 he stepped on a land mine. Lost legs, arms and part of face. Is from a movie called ‘Johnny Gets His Gun’. The man is the young boy in the video. Love your perception.
You seem an empath. You feel everything. Both beautiful and scary at the same time.
Thanks for watching so glad you can relate ☺️

You see I discovered this when I was 6 years old cause my older brother had the VHS tape for the music video. Keep in mind that was before I knew what war was so I was just enjoying the music and the video never bothered me
