We had Captain Scarlet in America in the late 60's\early 70's and I started watching when I was 5 in 1969. I recently found it on Tubi TV and 50 years later I'm right back with our favorite indestructible retro-metabolized Spectrum agent. I feel like a day never went by! And yes, to your point, the show DID have a great sense of peril and some extreme situations that set it apart from your typical TV show, which is what made it so good.
Understatement of the century dude 😂 It's awesome to see the good guy being the bad guy for a brief while, before becoming good again. At least we got to see two sides of Captain Scarlet 🙂
@@physical_insanity Indeed he was, this is how it all began mate. Started off as an indestructible Mysteron and the fall caused them to lose control over him
Shot in the chest, fell 800ft to the ground, and may possibly have had the entire structure of the car view land on him... Captain Scarlet is a tough cookie!
Every time I watch this scene, I always think how hard it was for Captain Blue to attack his friend and fellow officer Captain Scarlet. He gave him a chance to surrender, but the Mysteron hold on Scarlet was too strong, giving Blue no other alternative. However after causing Scarlet to fall 800 feet to the ground, he helped free him from the Mysteron control. I think Blue was a loyal friend to the very end.
Marionettes, tabletop or suspended models, and a blown-up picture of a cityscape, for cry eye. But it's all filmed and voice-acted straight up and it WORKS. Simply amazing.
It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen in anything. It's just a flat platform elevated 1000s of feet into the air for no reason, so people can park their cars up there (but not go back down). Maybe it's for all the suicides in the future. You can pay to drive up there and then jump off. Suicide Tower.
I got it in America in 1969 and into the early 70''s, and Tubi TV now has it and I'm watching it again and re-discovering the magic of this long lost classic!
Great memories...loved it as a kid. I had the SPV toy in die cast metal and attempted to make an Airfix Angel fighter, I had more Airfix glue on my fingers than the actual plane. Derrick Meddings was years ahead of his time...brilliant blast from the past..Thanks for the share Whovian.
Ahhh the Spectrum helicopter, such an underated vehicle which didn't have much screen time throughout the show's time.😢😢🚁🚁 It was my favourite vehicle of the Spectrum vehicle arsenal in Captain Scarlet along with the Angel Interceptor as my No.2 vehicle.😍😍 Shame on how it was introduced to being used and controlled by The Mysterons in this episode, I was really hoping it would help both Captain Blue and The Angels stop a Mysteron controlled Captain Scarlet but instead it was used to try and kill Captain Blue plus it had to be shot down by Destiny Angel just like that. When I first saw this episode, I was like "NOOOO, WHY DESTINY, WHY DO YOU DO IT?!!!"😂😂😂 Still however I loved Captain Scarlet and Thunderbirds growing up back then as a boy, My 2 all time favourite Gerry Anderson TV Series. This iconic clip of the first episode of Captain Scarlet brings back such memories.
Utterly brilliant tv show which has stood the test of time. Up there with "The Prisoner" for sheer iconic status. Just finished the box set and couldn't believe how dark it was. Back in the 1960s, nobody batted an eyelid over its' extreme violence. The only kids' show to have a suicide bomber in the opening episode beggars belief, that scene could never happen in a modern children's' show today. As for Captain Black, the template for Darth Vader. A certain QT used the colour coding for "Reservoir Dogs". A classic.
I'm a huge Fanderson! And I think that the best shot they ever filmed was at 3:09:00. Totally amazing, as Captain Scarlet falls from the car park. I challenge anyone to show me better superannuation of any form!
One of the greatest trick shots ever! One might be tempted to say "Look Ma! No strings attached!"! For, if things are pulled along on strings, then how does the little tank go up the spiral ramp at the start? And how does Captain Blue go under the overhang of the building at 2:03 if he's a puppet on a string? Answers: 1 - The vehicle isn't moving it's just held in place with strings at the front and back; the tower and the tower and the background are moving! The tower's being screwed into the ground. 2 - This whole sequence is shot upside-down! The strings are attached to his shoes!
Holy crap, he saved the president, but they never did mention what happened when hundreds of tons of metal, concrete, tourists and parked vehicles collapsed down on to the city when those huge cement platforms and the entire top of the tower fell 800+ feet to the ground below as a result of this "Air Battle"... It's a good thing we didn't have to think about these kinds of things when we were kids... LOL! ... "OUCH!!!"
Never thought about it as a kid but that car park is the most ridiculous piece of architectural design I've ever seen. How high up is that? Why do people park up there? Where do you go? How do you go back down? What possible use is that for anything? Is it a futuristic suicide tower where you drive up there and jump off? It's absolutely bizarre haha. Mental.
3:39 I've never felt comfortable with the way Captain Blue is holding the World President as they escape to safety. He looks like he could easily drop him at such a great height.
I believe they were often guided by grooves underneath the vehicles, rather like Scalextric cars. This is more apparent in the HD remastered versions where the tracks are visible.
why don't they have some of this stuff on nowadays so what it's a little corny , Sure beats some that live action crap we watch now .a Lover of old tv.
What is SIG or SID? I remember hearing that a lot when I watched this as a kid, but what does it stand for, or mean? I always thought it was like "Acknowledged", or "Affirmative".
"S.I.G." is indeed an audio thumbs-up, all-clear, you get the idea. I think you also hear "Spectrum Is Red" uttered in the series. SID (as in Speech Intelligence Decoder) was the apparent counterpart to HAL 9000 in the Captain Scarlet episode "Lunarville 7" as well as the Earth-orbiting Space Intruder Detector from the UFO series.
dttruman The face was probably modelled on Hudson. Robert Mitchum was also another character head in the series. I believe that Anderson had toyed with the idea of big name actors doing guest voices to help sell the series in America, but the idea proved too expensive.
A lot of puppets in the shows were modelled on actors from the time. Scarlet is Cary Grant, Black is Robert Mitchum, Scott Tracy was a young John Wayne and Marina was Ursula Andress. Commander Shore in Stingray looks a bit like Ernest Borgnine. Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Others might recognise more.
So ive got to drive a mile up there to park my car? There is no way this would have passed council planners, no guard rails at the top, base jumpers would have a field day. Let alone the fact there is hardly anyone using it, a total waste if taxpayers money! Vote ukip!
Old Meddings loved to have explosions for no apparent reason - even underwater - but hey - it was always exciting. And what about the gay Agent Captain Pink or was it Captain Fuchsia?
It does amuse me how long the possessed Captain Scarlet and President just patiently wait as Blue drives in onto the top platform, gets out and then puts on his flying gadget and approaches...in real time that must be over 10 minutes...
Captain Blue was always my favourite and this proves it my point. Captain Scarlet maybe indestructible but can be possessed by the Mysterons and is obviously not a Christian!
When you experience that much danger just because you happen to be indestructible, it may cause you to doubt the existence of someone watching out for you.
The helicopter impact is one of the best audio/visual SFX shots I've ever seen!
yes it is 2:21 it goes out of control with it's sound who would like to upload it
Before the nanny state this was tea time telly! And it was fabulous. Its 53 years old as I write this and it still looks great
Always liked in the show how the Mysterons always told Earth what they were going to do before they did it. Very kind of them.
The Anderson shows were crazy elaborate for kid's shows. Derek Meddings was an absolute legend.
High class children's TV, the production values were magnificent, I really enjoyed this when I as a lad, thanks for posting
flashtheoriginal it's sad I am young but my dad still had the old tapes that are great to watch
Well said... loved these as a kid
Scarlet shot himself or am I mistaken?
Captain Scarlet's expression from 3:08 το 3:10 is priceless !!!
Ha ha ha !!!
That's always been my favorite shot in the whole show. They had to make a special head just for that shot.
I remember feeling real peril watching this as a young child. That's the good stuff, baby.

There's no denying it; this show had REAL balls!

I so agree
@@zerogee768 Wasn't he under Mysteron control in this scene?

I love the retro jet sounds in this. And the effects, of course.
3:08 - That same iconic sound from the intro... very jarring.
The pigeon crap on the ledge was a nice touch.
Marionettes, tabletop or suspended models, and a blown-up picture of a cityscape, for cry eye. But it's all filmed and voice-acted straight up and it WORKS. Simply amazing.
And yet nobody questions why they have an unnecessarily high car park.
Because it's *THE FUTUUUURRRRRE!*
Yeah it's pretty hilarious how health and safety regulations actually get worse in the future lol
ya know I was thinking that just before I scrolled and read your comment lol

This is honestly class, nostalgic AF!
destiny angel is still enchanting, after all these decades. take care n stay safe.
Love the design of the tower
Special effects guru Derek Meddings and his crew of James Bond fame did the model work for this show.
This is a good scene
I had used to have Airfix model of the Angels fighter jet. It was sort of crossover of a Dessault Mirage and a F104 Starfighter
Does anyone else remember BBC airing this the night before 9/11? It's creeped me out for years.

Awesome show. I still have some of the old Captain scarlet comicbooks which are really nice. Beautiful artwork.
Looks like a Disney animatronic ride!
3:09 Why cant all actors make that face action when they get shot?

Clearly you drive up there, and scoot off to work with the aid of your jet pack.
I am an architect (63), and as a teenager I drawed this spiral tower at least a dozen times (pretty obssesed with it).
