It definitely stirred serious excitement in this impressionable former nine year old kid when the series started airing in my hometown Cleveland about 1966.
When I was around 8-10 years old, used to watch it in a 14" B/W TV way back in 1979-81 in my hometown in Malaysia. This was our evening 5pm show with Tea and anything my mum prepared for teatime. Those were the best years of my life. No more Aqua Maria, no more the teatime, no more mum preparing for teatime and mum is no more .. Enjoy your childhood and parents, please let your children have a childhood memory. Childhood doesn't last forever ..
I have several albums of Stingray and Thunderbirds from my childhood living in England from '65 - '67. Marina is one of my favorites, but I collected all things Thunderbirds from ages 7 to 9. The music and talent of Barry Gray were exquisite. He captured the era beautifully. I would love to go back and live that time again.
I was born in 1990 but i used to watch all the re runs of Stingray and Captain scarlet as a kid. I used to absolutely love those shows, of course Thunderbirds as well, but watching clips of Stingray bring back so many memories.
As ex military when I hear those drums, it reminds me of a call to station. If you have ever served in the military you know what I mean, when the call goes up you move. Gerry must have served or knew ex mil. I at 60 still twinge when I hear those drums, I want to grab a weapon & cover my buds.Wow you & Sylvia created a Dynasty that is unforgettable.
Supermarionation is woven into the very fabric of my life, nothing but warm feelings any time I see any of the Gerry & Silvia shows. Incredible how in the Stingray world all species of fish only swim left & right, never towards or away from the camera 😉
Back around not any later than the Summer of 1966 a pal of mine would get all kinds of props from his mother's kitchen and pretended we both were the submarine commanders and we would set things up in his parlor. Pots and pans, pot covers, knives and forks for controls, the pot covers were our steering wheels etc. We would recite all the "canned" phrases of the show as we played. I even recall reruns of this show turning the stations by hand (no remotes back then) in the Summer afternoons a year or two later but at that point he and I had aged out of the pretending thing. It's been 55 years or more since I heard that Maria song and yet I was singing along with 90% of the lyrics off the top of my head. I even remembered defering to my pal that Maria was attracted to only him and that I was the 2nd in charge while playing in his parlor (lol)!! You gotta be almost on Social Security at the very youngest to remember this show as a child in 1964.
My God, what an opening, Stand by for Action and as a kid you just knew you were in for a great episode.. never did like the closing theme though, as a 5 year old girls were yuk!! It was all a bit errrgh... how I changed my tune :-)

Barry Gray's music was superb and it was a huge part of the success of these 60s british puppet shows. The Thunderbirds march has a life of its own and it's on the top level of popular British march music. The best music associated with films and TV is so much more durable and evergreen than the films themselves.
Wildwood -- Yes indeed! As a kid when Stingray came out, I was besotted with things like Saturn V rockets, and Telstar bringing Mr. Kennedy live to our living room in London. (Yes, why did we always put the telly under the window where a fault in the high voltage circuits would set fire to the curtains? But I digress). Stumbling upon Troy T. and friends fiftysomething years on, what stuns me here is the sheer oomph of the musicians! Wow, I'd love to be able to hear and SEE these guys performing. 4:11 That architecture is beautiful. What an awe inspiring intro! At my age I can only imagine how large this would seem to a child... they might forget to breathe!

I can remember when I was 11 watching this back in 65 I can always remember the intro music I'm surprised that General Motors never used that intro music to introduce their Corvette Stingray as the car is driving down the road with a couple in a convertible enjoying the Carefree moments on the road I'm surprised General Motors never ever thought about using that intro music from the TV series Stingray.
What memories! This was my favorite of these shows. I remember acting out episodes with friends in the playground of my elementary school. I haven’t seen anything of it since, nearly 55 years!
One element of the Stingray design always blows my mind. That's a "Pump Jet" at the back powering the sub. How the hell did this children's puppet show ever come up with something that close to Top Secret Reality? I don't think they actually entered into fleet use anyplace until the mid 80's at the earliest.
I loved this show as a kid and would rush home from school to watch it. I am told that I would sing Aqua Marina around the house; I had pretty good musical tastes even at six years old! And, you know, it still sounds good!
I don't know if I imagined, or dreamt it, but I believe that when the BBC showed this in the UK, they had to over-dub the intro dialogue to "anything can happen, in the next 20 minutes", because of the lack of adverts (so the total running time was shorter). :) First time I've heard it in "stereo". Brilliant.
At 10 years old, I never understood the ending credits--with the woman swimming in the deep ocean. I was truly mesmerized by the puppetry. Thanks for sharing!!
I’m proud that John Livesey Eccles aka Barry Gray came from my hometown. I grew up watching and listening to shows created by the Andersons with music by Barry. Stingray was one of my favourites. Black and White television in those days.
You need to watch this on a week day at about 5pm, the time i would have watched in the early 70's. I bet we can all remember the theme tunes, yet wouldn't have a clue what was on tele yesterday.
I think the Stingray series came closest to being mini-movies. The quality of production was second to none, and the editing and music had obviously been done to high standards. Even the credits & titles looked expensive. Bl**dy gorgeous! Thanks to everyone at APF.
I'm 45 and heard it for the first time. I'm a sucker for those kind of tunes! I vaguely remember watching a puppet series back in 1975 in the military channel in Panama as a boy, but can't pinpoint which series it was. The thing is, when I saw this on Pluto TV it caught my attention completely and my mind sort of picked up on some reminisce from my childhood. I plan to watch a lot of these puppet series until I finish them all.
Luis Donado There's a black female Character in one of these, Thunderbird, Stingray, Joe 90, Captain Scarlet, I'm sure there was I've been looking, I wanted to put it in a you tube video MAXINE WATERS, LOL I'm positive there's one looks like her
I watched these shows when I was in elementary school back then. The Aqua Marina song was hauntingly beautiful. Sometimes at school I would get a bit homesick for my mom and for some reason I would think of this song. To this day I still asscciate it with her. Lost her last year at the age of 91. First time I had heard this in years. Sometimes you tube is a very good thing.
Obviously it was in black and white on television when I was a kid,{I'm 60 now} my elder brother had a painting set of stingray and to watch the colours come to show what it was like in colour was pure magic for me.
The only opening sequence and theme that can top this was the original Jonny Quest sequence. But it's a close competition. It's kind of hilarious that I never saw Stingray in color as a kid. Color TVs were few and far between. Had to wait for a rerun when I was much older. Great stuff.
I remember first watching this late night/early mornings on my mom's tv with the sound off so I wouldn't wake her up. I've been recently been watching it and couldn't believe the awesome opening music! So swinging!
Can you smile and cry at the same time ? I was, watching this..It was my favorite, just that hint of romance knocking at my door. The villain was a good take off of the horror actor Peter Lorre, so scary. Marina was so 60's and a take off of Julie Christie . The Children today are fobbed off cheap. Our tv then was amazing. They are missing great stuff. This was great. Thank you.
Has the pleasure of visiting the APF studio in Slough on a few occasions. The live fish seem swimming in the underwater scenes where in a huge, thin tank that was only an inch or so between its sides. Everything behind it was done in dry conditions.
Gerry Anderson was the Walt Disney of the UK, back in the day. I watched Stingray as a kid. I often watched it at a friend's house. She had a color TV, I didn't. Amazing what they managed to do with puppets, models and water tanks, no CGI. It look a lot of creativity to pull this off. It still looks good after all these years. Later, I was a fan of the Anderson's other shows, UFO and Space 1999. The models of ships started looking fake though, especially in Space 1999. By now, American TV and movies had caught up with effects, and had put out Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. Audiences no longer had the same suspension of disbelief. Probably why Anderson and company quit. They couldn't compete any more.
Nothing to do with not being able to compete at all. His divorce and other issues had a lot to do with things, not like he suddenly gave up or anything. Take a look at his works after Space 1999 to see he did many other projects. Better than just guessing shit.
It's a bold choice, frenetic bongos as an alert siren. I have got this image stuck in my head of a stoned hippie sat in a room filled with cushions and lava lamps... A tube comes out of the wall and leads to a collar around his neck. The alarm is sounded and speed is pumped into his system as a pair of bongos rise out of the floor in front of him. He sits bolt upright and his pupils turn to pin prick as his hands blur over the skin drums. For half an hour.
Stand by for Action! Anything can happen in the next half hour - LOVED this show!! I wanted to swim like Marina, Aqua Marinaaaa! 😄 I wanted to be her for Halloween or Lady Penelope from Thunderbirds are Go! No one had those costumes back in the 60's lol!
Yes, that's right. Moneypenny did all the female voices apparently. I knew there was a reason I liked this show when it was first broadcast, and now I know why!!!
One of my earliest memories is of watching Stingray on a 17-inch Zenith television while playing with a wind-up toy train in Sioux Falls, SD. My other early memory is looking up the isle of a North Central Airlines DC-3 when my dad was transferred from Sioux Falls, SD to Lincoln, Nebraska. The flight was from Sioux Falls to Omaha.
This & Fireball XL5 were the shows of this sort I remember watching in the very early 60s in Northern California. Anything to do with space or ocean exploration/adventures & I was all in as a kid. Definitely a different time. This clip brought back memories. Thank you so much.
Brilliant. The suspense the drama everything and to think that Gerry Anderson and the team managed to make all these with the restricted walking movements of the puppets. May be I'm just nostalgic but for me the puppets give an appealing and intriguing perspective and like comics from the golden age manage to take you somewhere else for a while.
can not describe how influential these shows were to kids back in the 60s, me included. So many kids went on to become engineers, astronauts, etc. Me I got a BS and MS degree in engineering and math. Was always curious how things worked. Was a captain in the Air Force. And my story was not unique

Brilliant.
No, it was always " in the next half hour " and it was never on the BBC it was broadcast on ITV
This intro never ever fails to raise the hairs on my arms, thanks Gerry.
You need to watch this on a week day at about 5pm, the time i would have watched in the early 70's.
I bet we can all remember the theme tunes, yet wouldn't have a clue what was on tele yesterday.
That brought back some great memories! I loved the show when I was a kid. The Andersons' attention to detail was amazing.
Broadcast starts on Talking Pictures TV in the UK FROM 2ND MARCH!
Maybe it was me when I was a kid; whenever I hear the ITC introduction I get excited because I know it was going to be an action show.
Fireball XL5 baby!
Imagine what this Creative team could have done with computer animation.??? I love these puppet shows.
I'm nearly 57yrs old I can remember the all of Gerry Anderson programmes fantastic to be hear the themes again memories of the day
I think the Stingray series came closest to being mini-movies. The quality of production was second to none, and the editing and music had obviously been done to high standards. Even the credits & titles looked expensive. Bl**dy gorgeous! Thanks to everyone at APF.
Aqua Marina
Haven't heard this song since I was 5. Beautiful song
Always wanted to hear it again...I'm now 54😔
linda woods Heck, I miss it too ... and I'm almost 43 ...
Maxine Waters??? Obviously a villianess. That might narrow your search a bit...
NICE TO SEE ALL BEST TV IN MY DAYS 1978
Great opening and closing sequences and themes! Making Sam a paraplegic was a stroke of genius too.
I am now a Troy/Marina shipper. Just magical!
Thank you.
I have Barry Gray's from Amazon Music on my playlist which covers most of Gerry Anderson's productions. That Aqua Marina gets me all the time.
The kids of today would probably laugh and shake their heads if they looked at the old Gerry Anderson puppet shows, but we know differently!.
Has the pleasure of visiting the APF studio in Slough on a few occasions. The live fish seem swimming in the underwater scenes where in a huge, thin tank that was only an inch or so between its sides. Everything behind it was done in dry conditions.
The next thing you'll be telling us is that it was made with puppets but who'd fall for that ?
I was wondering was there a documentary on the people who made these programs?
@@sandrasanders706 Quiet a few, try this one:
www.imdb.com/title/tt3702706/
No doubt on youtube someplace. There's another one done around 2000 also.
@@sandrasanders706 One of them is called SUPERMARIONATION. It may still be available on DVD.
Anybody else find Marina super cute? I’m 58 now. Music took me back to a time of wonder. I was in Nova Scotia Canada.
..."anything can happen in the next half hour"...sign me up!!! And those drums - better than "Wipeout"!!!
The best Toons in Cartoons was Johnny Quest. You just can't beat them drums...
Master Chief -- Actually, isn't beating the drums the whole point?
It's a bold choice, frenetic bongos as an alert siren. I have got this image stuck in my head of a stoned hippie sat in a room filled with cushions and lava lamps... A tube comes out of the wall and leads to a collar around his neck. The alarm is sounded and speed is pumped into his system as a pair of bongos rise out of the floor in front of him. He sits bolt upright and his pupils turn to pin prick as his hands blur over the skin drums. For half an hour.
@@jazzfan6 I get it but no-one else does ;)
agree, also, great on hawai five o. great era, check out conga player on star trek original!
Mum worked on this show and her name appears at 5:23 ... this was one of her favs to work (moreso than the more popular Thunderbirds).
Simon Baldock Stingray was always the best.
Was she a Puppet Operator or Wardrobe?
That is really cool, Simon - I reckon it must have been a real privilege for your mum to work with Gerry and Sylvia. x
Simon Baldock That is so good to hear, Simon.
great story, that must have been a job in a million, working with these dudes everyday, wow
anything can happen in the next half hour . i cant belive the commander said that on open mic all over the base . i love the guppies .
The first woman I fell in love with was a mute puppet. This is probably where I went wrong.
I know the feeling, Tintin won my heart. She hasn't aged a day.
Her looks were taken from Francoise Hardy.
I wish my wife was a mute puppet.
@Nick Martin *Ha! ha! ha! She was!*
I always preferred Atlanta. Still feel sorry for her.
Yes, that's right. Moneypenny did all the female voices apparently. I knew there was a reason I liked this show when it was first broadcast, and now I know why!!!
Absolutely loved that show, what great sound tracks, not the garbage you get today
The flight was from Sioux Falls to Omaha.
great childhood memory ,jerry anderson was well ahead of his time a pure genius with his creations .
used to fancy marina when i was a kid...great music tor your phone...you get great funny looks...ha ha.
This & Fireball XL5 were the shows of this sort I remember watching in the very early 60s in Northern California. Anything to do with space or ocean exploration/adventures & I was all in as a kid. Definitely a different time. This clip brought back memories. Thank you so much.
I loved it as a kid and I still do
Stingray was always my favorite Gerry Anderson show.
Brilliant. The suspense the drama everything and to think that Gerry Anderson and the team managed to make all these with the restricted walking movements of the puppets. May be I'm just nostalgic but for me the puppets give an appealing and intriguing perspective and like comics from the golden age manage to take you somewhere else for a while.
harpothehealer Quite ... and me too ...
Btw, don't forget Derek Meddings ... that guy was a genius ...
That is the point of entertainment now it's all about everything else but...
all leading to ufo, same but with real humans
That took me back to my childhood.....Troy hasn’t changed from how I remember him.
can not describe how influential these shows were to kids back in the 60s, me included. So many kids went on to become engineers, astronauts, etc. Me I got a BS and MS degree in engineering and math. Was always curious how things worked. Was a captain in the Air Force. And my story was not unique
Wooow ,my childhood memories i use to run home from school to watch this my house was 3 block's away from school,.. i remember running home in the rain /my black and white tv sittin on the floor as a kid doin my home work thanx mom i miss you ..2-5-20.cashmere.ps can you cry and smile at the same time; Saturday morning..... 💯🎧..
One of my fave shows, used to watch it on Friday night before my weekly bath...ah, those were the days,
I used to love Stingray so much..
I remember i married my first Wife in 1980 because i through see looked like Marina
As a child this show fascinated me , humored me and creeped me out all at the same time. Were they marionettes? Were they bobble heads? Animatronic? All three? I certainly appreciated the creativity...
Gerry Anderson I grew up with your programmes i still watch them wherever you are God bless x
