- Beach hopping: I went to 7 beaches, but only the usual 2 had any shells. It was a wonderful morning to travel and explore, but best of all was finally getting to Hervey Bay to collect some moon snails, and then to Burrum Heads for the urchins! Wow, I was really spoiled for urchins... heart urchins and a giant one!! Shout-out to Robin and Zane who I met out there; they gave me so many large ones that washed ashore a few weeks earlier too!! Thanks for watching~
I usually so two episodes while up at Hervey Bay, but this was really both of them rolled into one after spending extra time exploring the Fraser Coast that morning. We'll be back at the home beaches next time.

The Urchins, my goodness, it was so nice of that lady to give me so many big ones...I could have taken more, but I didn't want to be greedy 😂 she was incredibly nice. G'day Annie 👋🏻💖🏖️ Oh my gosh, thank you so much 🙏🏻 Yes, I really am a little too spoiled sometimes...or maybe it really speaks more about the amazing and lovely people that I meet while making these shelling adventures? The Propeller Arc with a hitchhiker is a cutie; those little jewel boxes like to attach themselves to so many shells around there, though finding a fresh one like today is a bit more challenging. The Hammer Oyster was by himself this time; I wonder if the sand covered up with rest? Same with those Circular Tapestry Clams too. As always, thank you so much for coming along on another big shelling adventure 🤩 It was great to see that Hervey Bay had plenty of shells... G'day Trudy 👋🏻💖 It was a massive day of travel, and I'm just so pleased that it resulted in such a nice shell finding adventure (and information gathering morning). The big urchin is crazy cool; I was told that these big ones washed up shortly after my last trip there (that very windy day). This time, the wind and tides tossed up a lot of sand onto the beach and covered the shells, but there was still a lot of lovely ones to find. Thank you so much for watching 🥰

As for the seashells, it was nice to find a new one with the Lamp Shell, but hmm, I think the big moon snails 🐌 were especially nice. I went back to Hervey Bay today…but no moon snails; there is only sea weed 😱😱😱 this trip was quite lucky to be days before the green incursion. Wow, the lamp shell is very nice and new. Love the heart urchins, also the other sea urchins. The moon snails are so lovely. The colors on all of them are beautiful. The scallops are very nice as well. There are so many beautiful shells. Just It is so nice that so many people give you some of their haul. You deserve to be spoiled. I would travel to go shelling if there was a place to go here. There are too many shells to really enjoy every adventure. How far did you travel today? G’day Toni 👋🏻💖 It’s always so much fun to find a new shell, even one such as odd as the Lamp Shell. I’m glad that you liked those urchins; they really stole the show this time…I should have given a little more screen time to those ones that were shared with me. It was a really nice end to a long day. I travelled quite a bit, probably around 200 - 250 miles in the car? Not sure if that’s right, I’m used to using kilometres. It seems like a common one in the Indo-Pacific area and beyond (though this is my first time seeing it) some places also call it sea bamboo because of how the live creature has a stalk at the base of the shell...weird looking thing!!! Have seen the last couple of videos too , but I was a bit busy, I will comment when I get a chance 😅 This one was a real expedition 😀 very satisfactory, I guess you didn't need a lullaby 😂 you got very many beautiful and interesting shells , I really don't know what to choose, but for sure unusual and intriguing Lingula anatina , I don't know but it reminds me some sweetwater bivalve, i will search later. The other top valve with radial stripes , looks from a oyster shell. Nice piece, the Chama pulchella on Trisidos tortuosa. Sorry for the Angas bubble shell 😒this was another interesting piece, but you had a mountain of sea urchins and many other beauties 😍 as usual not deceiving at all , every single shell becomes a beauty in your hands ❤ ❤❤❤❤ bye Maddie 👋 thank you so much
G'day Francesco 👋❤ Oh my goodness, I understand!!! I promise I do, so don't feel like you need to comment on everything. Lingula anatina is such an interesting one... the iNaturalist shows it as a very common shell from around a third of the world? All around Asian and Australia,and beyond, but I had never seen it before. The Circe scripta is the bivalve with those lovely red arrow patterns on it - very unusual too, but yess, some of the more usual Chama pulchella on Trisidos tortuosa are just as nice. No worries about the Angas' Bubbles; shells can break pretty easily and I've learned to accept that (and my own clumsiness with them sometimes). I finally found the time to reply back to you, thanks for waiting and thank you so much for watching the big adventure ❤
Hello Maddie! Super fun adventure. I would take beach hopping over bar hopping any day. My favourite shells today were the black strange's scallop, and the commercial scallop half that wasn't flat (colouring was sunset like to me). Super jealous of all ghe sea urchins you took home, especially the huge green one.

G'day Bonnie Julien 👋🏻🏖️ Ahh well, part of me expected that those first few beaches wouldn't have any shells; they don't get the waves to wash them ashore because that entire straight section of water is protected from harsh conditions by that island that I pointed out. I think there is a lot of shells if you took a boat and dived for shells in good collection areas. I really enjoyed your video today Maddie, had a couple cups of coffee and breakfast while watching. Those fragile heart urchins you may want to try using an egg carton with some cotton in it, that might work if you want to spend the time. Awesome haul of shells and urchins.
G’day Jeff 👋🏻🏖️💖 It was a long one, it’s was definitely worth a few coffees 😂 (the next few will be short though, the school holidays are picking a lot of shells off the beach). Ahhh I’m not too worried about those heart urchins… yes, I could wrap them and put them into a container of some kind, but even then they might just dry out and fall apart 🤔 and how would I rinse out the sand and leftover dusts and whatnot out of them later? Or when I put them into a permanent container at home? These things, I think, are made to break down quickly, especially these extra small ones. So again, I’m not too worried about them 😂 Thank you for the advice, but I’m going to pretend that this is a problem that doesn’t need a fix 😉 Thank you so much for watching 🥰
Ohhhhh the black bladder moon snail was fabulous! Fingernail clams are pretty cool! The jeweled dog well was very nice too. The heart urchin I’ve never seen before. Kind of pretty! The black bladder moon snail is my fav!❤

I do have a little container for the delicate shells. I don't think it would have mattered with the heart urchins; they will break when they gently bump against each other. The bubble shell really should have been wrapped in some tissue paper I keep in my bag, but it was tiredness and forgetfulness after a long day that ultimate was the cause it it breaking. I'm not too worried about it; some shells are really just too delicate and things like this happen 😉 I'll have to find another one some day? Thank you so much for watching 🥰
My mom loves collecting those urchins we have a beach that we would go every weekend too and thats where those urchins are 💜💜

I e been meaning to ask and I always forget. Is it more stinky there than your home beach? I don't know why I get that idea, maybe it's all the stuff on the beach. Lots of moon snails today. Nice and shinny. Love the little nutmeg shells. Much different colors than Florida. Love, love, the scallops. That oyster looked so cool hooked to the stone. I don't usually like it either,but that was cool. Wow Maddie that's a lot of beach hopping. Lol I love it, Thank y for sharing that with us. Best kind of urchin, cleaned by nature. Is it the time of year I wonder, the lack of shells? Those little heart urchins are so cute. You found the nursery 😂

G'day Roberta 👋❤ Hahaha, hmm, good question!! No, these beaches are not usually any more or less stinky than the usual beach. There are some odors for sure, but they aren't from the shells (unless I sniff the odd stinky strombus, but most shells that i collect are cleaned out). I will say though, the home beach sometimes has a very briny smell from some of the rock pools that are almost always submerged, but get uncovered at the super low 0.0 level low tide. The beaches at Hervey Bay and Burrum Heads are not like this and don't stink, but that second Hervey Bay beach with no shells except those old ones around the fallen trees... yes, it has a whiff... I think it's slightly septic? Probably not the right word, but I don't like the way the water can smell around there. Oh, and if the Hervey Bay beaches are all of that green sea weed show up? Like from last year? Yeah, that's like a literal tonne and miles and miles of rotting plant smell... hate that stuff! Anyhoo! It was worth it to beach hop around and find all of these treasures 😂 the different kinds of urchins and bivalves were the best!! Thank you so much for watching~

I'm glad that you had the good sense to get out of there... I wouldn't want to stick around either. Hopefully you will not see him again, but I don't have any advice for what to do if you do see him. Hopefully this is just a one-time unpleasant situation. I'd be traumatized or hesitant to return too. Stay safe and you'll know when you're ready to go shelling again.

So many urchins, what a great haul. I had your luck from the other beaches yesterday. I went to Pt Arkwright and found nothing on the beach but managed a few cowries around the rocks. Thanks for sharing!
Morning Danielle 👋🏻🌊 Oh my goodness, that’s quite coincidental; I actually went to Pt Arkwright last week (just for a change, and because Cartwright was a bit picked over) before the low tides got too late in the evening. It’s an interesting beach, and a it’s bit of a workout to move around those rocks, isn’t it?? I’m glad you had some luck with the cowries 🤩 You can get some surprisingly uncommon ones there… It will forever stay in my heart as the place where I found that huge Humpback Cowrie last year. I didn’t find much last week either , though I actually did pretty well with Bonnets there…lots of school holidays kids/families out shelling as well (though more at the rocks at the access rather than around the bend) it’s a surprisingly popular spot, and a nice little place to go for somewhere different. Just you wait until you manage to get up to Dundowran, you’ll love it! Thanks for watching 🥰
@@SandCoffeeRocks yes I wasn't expecting much as it was late afternoon and school holidays but there were a couple of cowries including a nice snake head hidden in the rocks. But for the beach, it looks like the tides have taken or hidden the shells along that beach. Previous weeks had way more shells. Yes I do need to make it up to Harvey Bay one weekend there are some bucket list shells i need to find.
Oh wait, the open beach stretch at Pt Arkwright has shells on it too? I just figured it was bare, similar to most of the other open beaches up the coast (Castaways, Mudjimba, Buddina, etc) I'll keep an eye on it next time I'm there. Well done on your lovely Snake-head Cowrie 🤩 it's hard to find a shiny one there with all of the rocks and rough waves 🌊 you must have picked a good day to go!?
@@SandCoffeeRocks yes from Marcoola up to Pt Arkwright has had shells. Lots of teasers (broken would have been beauties) but some nice sunsets scallops (commercial), Venus clams, buttons (bittersweets), arks, angelwings etc. But like most beaches the conditions need to be just so to have shells.

Gorgeous sea shells. I collected a bunch of Sea Urchins at Malibu Beach in California. I put them in 2 very large antique jars. They display super well.

I guess they're all over...I wonder if Malibu Beach has an offshore kelp or sea grass forest somewhere that is their habitat? I bet they look amazing in those jars; very decorative! The strangers scallop reminds me of a lions paw found in Florida. I have searched high and low and haven’t found one yet. Love from Ohio💞💞💞💞

Annie!! Thank you so much for this 🙏🏻!!! I've said it too much, but my goodness, I really have no expectations for anything like this; thank you 💖 for being so generous. This was a really big day, so I'm thrilled that people are enjoying this episode, particular because there is more vlog-style scenes in it than I usually do; I mostly just want to focus on the shells. As for some extra thoughts about this trip: those early beaches along the Great Sandy Straight were ones that I'd wanted to explore for a while, but there is almost no information about them online in relation to shells and whatnot. The tipping point was when I searched a few weeks ago for "shells" and "Boonooroo" and it came back with a real estate listing in Boonooroo, with one of the selling points being "white silica sands teeming with sea shells" it literally said this!! Alas, Boonooroo was all dark brown mud beaches with no shells 😅 I recon they mistook the place for Burrum Heads? One of the larger inland town realtors must have had no idea about which place was which in these small coastal areas 🏖️ but it was still a nice day with nice people... That sea urchin lady was incredibly lovely; she gave me half a dozen large urchins, and had dozens more in a plastic bag (like, a a giant single use shopping bags that they used to give you in stores over 5 years ago 😂). She apparently collected them to give away to a local crafter who makes some kind of decorative urchin curtain with them? It sounded amazing! You are right! I did research this one a little when I found the name for it for this video. Some people consider it a "living fossil" sea shells!! Some people think the name is undeserved or incorrect, but who can really know in the end? It's super cool, and also sometimes called Sea Bamboo... I guess people eat them too! Have found at first attempt, that top striped shell belongs to the family Pteridae (pearl oysters) and seems Electroma ovata ( Quoy & Gaymard, 1832)bye 👋❤️
Ohhh so it is a Pearl Oyster!!??? I am trying to research Electroma ovata but it seems like Conchology's website is not working tonight. Also, there doesn't seem to be any pictures of this exact shell species on the internet, but it is referenced as a Queensland shell. How crazy! Thank you so much for finding this one for me, I truly had no idea!

G'day Nancy 👋🏻🐚 Ahhh, I do have a little container for shells, but I think the better thing to do for that little bubble shell would have been to wrap it in a tissue and remember to take it out of my bag afterwards 😅 It ended up being a combination of tiredness and forgetfulness after a long day that broke the bubble...it cannot be understated how delicate that bubbles and those urchins are; thinner and more brittle than tissue paper 😲 Anyhoo, it is what it is. Long story; it was in one of those car washing bundles that you get a guy for Father’s Day, birthday, Christmas, etc, and it was in there (yes, I got it for dad for Father’s Day some years ago)… it doesn’t hold water too good, and it was sitting at the back of a cupboard for years, so I took it 🤣 I like that it can be reduced in size for when I don’t need it 👍🏻 Thanks for watching the big beach hopping adventure today 🥰

G'day Nick 👋🏻🐚 Yes indeed, some common names for this family of shells is razor clam or Jack's knife clam 😉 that's why I also put the scientific name on screen, because there can be several different English names for shells depending on a person's naming preference, but only one current scientific name (let's not speak about how often those scientific names change due to overzealous conchologists 😅). G'day Joyce 👋🏻🐚 Yes, I finds heaps of cowries, though it's been a while since I've found nice empty Arabian Cowries of good quality. Though, I don't find cowries at the beaches around the Fraser Coast (Hervey Bay), I find lots of cowries near home at the Sunshine Coast. Cowries are my favourite shells to collect, so I get pretty excited when I come across some of the better ones that still have shine or gloss on them 😁 be sure to check out some of my other recent shelling adventures to see them 😉 Thanks for watching 🥰
