  • An excellent band arrangement of this old Traditional folk song, "Man Of Constant Sorrow"was a one off single by this short lived Aussie progressive rock/power trio. Bulldog was formed by Singer/Lead Guitarist Mick Rogers, with Bob Dames (ex-The Purple Hearts) on bass & drummer Peter Miles (ex-Bay City Union). They played a few gigs but before they could get established & promote the record, Mick received a call from the UK to front the first line-up of Manfred Mann's Earth Band. How could he say no? So he stayed for 5 years. Nonetheless the record did reasonably well in Adelaide reaching #21 & charting for 19 weeks. Nationally it just managed to scrape into the Top 100 at #98 for a single week.
Rogers had first gained recognition for his guitar skills when he joined Normie Rowe's Playboys while Normie was in the UK in 1966, & while there, the band signed a one-off record deal with the prestigious & very cool Immediate Records, recording a well regarded & now collectable single Black Sheep R.I.P. / Sad which scored them lots of UK & Canadian gigs, despite not charting.
After they returned home & separated, Mick & fellow Playboy & ex Librettos singer bassist Brian Peacock, formed the jazz influenced rock band Procession who enjoyed a Top 10 Melbourne hit with "Anthem" & it's follow up "Listen" was also a moderate success . Procession also recorded "Live at Sebastians" in 1968, the first live album by a band in Australia before Mick again travelled to the UK with the band, recording a 2nd Self Titled (studio) album produced by Manfred Mann's Mike Hugg. Singles from the album album were not successful however. Ross Wilson then travelled to the UK to front Procession at the invitation of Peacock, a move which did not please Rogers. They recorded a few more tracks which went unreleased, but were rumoured to include the first version of Wilson's "Make Your Stash", later recorded by his band Daddy Cool & as well as by co-writer Mike Rudd's band Spectrum. But that line-up was short lived
Mick then came back to Australia, and briefly joined Doug Parkinson In Focus before forming Bulldog..and recording this single..for Ron Tudor's Fable Label would you believe..backed with another great band original, Inner Spring..a prog track more typical of their live set
