The Beatles as seen by their roadie, co-conspirator & friend Mal Evans - and Kenneth Womack

  • Mal Evans was the Beatles’ right-hand man, their bouncer, bodyguard, gofer, chauffeur, drug-runner, roadie, fellow party animal, confidante and friend. Along with Neil Aspinall he was the man who allowed the band to function daily and catered to their every need. He was such a central cog in the machine that Ringo declared, “now Mal’s left, the Beatles are really over.” Mal’s son delivered his archive of photos, manuscripts and memorabilia to the author, lecturer and world-renowned Beatles authority Kenneth Womack and asked him to write his father’s memoir, and the result - ‘Living The Beatles Legend: On the Road with the Fab Four - the Mal Evans Story’ - has just been published. It sees the whole story through a completely different lens. Among the highlights in this illuminating conversation with Ken you’ll find …
... Mal’s delicate relationships with the band and role as a peace-keeper.
… further proof that Allen Klein “caused despair”.
… why Lennon said life on the road “was like Satyricon”.
    … Mal’s brief tenure as Apple’s MD.
… how Cynthia Lennon unknowingly shopped him to his wife.
… the internal world of “the eight outsiders” (the Fabs, Brian, George M, Neil and Mal).
… the reunion with John and Paul at a Harry Nilsson session and the Jesse Ed Davis incident on the Lost Weekend.
… echoes of Mal in John Junkin’s character in A Hard Day’s Night.
… and the tragic and complex circumstances of his death at the hands of the police in 1976.

This was a great discussion. Kenneth Womack is always interesting in every interview I've heard with him. I just read his book on Mal Evans, and it is excellent.

Quantum physicists are predicting that there will be a point in the future where there is nothing else new to say about the Beatles - and no more books to write - but - we may still be centuries from reaching this eventuality.

Utterly absorbing. Had no idea about Mal's post-Beatles life. Wonderfully articulate analysis from Kenneth.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one as I do all the others. I have been waiting years for a book on Mal. Looks like my prayers have been answered!. Your talk with Kenneth was riveting. Yes my wife says the same thing about Beatles books and do I really need it? She say's the same thing about the 10K CD's. lol

ken and gary to the Mal Book...being a fan I wish it had 4 more books to it and more time to read it all. The pages speed thru the life clock of Mal and the Beatles rare phenomena. They are all dying or passed and these books is all that is left. Thanks for it and hope its successful.
I do wonder after completing the Acknowledgement and closing the book, it was all due to the temp cleaning lady? did she get any money? a thank you bonus check? anything?
or is it ironic, like Mal not being made super rich, the cleaning lady got nothing too?

Almost finished reading the book and much enjoying it, even though I'm also one of those who's read a ton of Beatles books. I'm not sure my abiding impression of Mal Evans as a person will be a completely positive one as a result but it's the more interesting for it.

In the 60s film "Privilege", I'm amazed Allen Klein didn't sue the producers for defammation of character in the resemblance to the film's music manager

I don't find the multi-coloured 'candified' font, fitting. It works on the National Portrait's Twiggy book, but not here. The other cover I've seen with green/blue lettering; is that the US edition?

The Beatles played at two venues which are a stone's throw...ish from my house. Litherland Town Hall. I grew up in Litherland from 12 onwards and The Lathom in Seaforth which is where I live now. The Lathom is a five-minute walk away. Seaforth and Litherland are the same postcode. L21.

Norman Rossington made me laugh in Hard Day's Night. "And I'll have none of your messin' Lennon" - I forget the other actor's name as Rossington's Beatle-sorting colleague. Ah...John Junkin. @13:00 😆😉Thanks. Wilfred Bramble in the police station. Hehehe.

I’ve just read the book. Ken shows rather than tells us about Mal, so that we can make our own minds up about him. This will be one of the essential Beatle books. It shows us the frantic activity going on under the apparently smooth surface.

Fear naught dear friends. Lewiston has been very quiet. Hopefully Volume 2 is coming soon. BTW American Beatles authors just can’t get the context.

If Mal was upset by Badfinger leaving Apple, don't you think he'd also be upset with Pete Ham killing himself just a year before Evans ?

Why isn't Tony Bramwell mentioned more, he was involved with touring, making videos and generally an ever present gopher & arranger?

Tbf I found he is mentioned quite often in the book. Though as you suggest, as something of a poor third behind Mal and Neil.
