  • So as many of you know, I am from Cleveland, Ohio, a city not known for their watchmaking, but today I get to flex my hometown pride looking at an undervalued brand, Ball Watch Company, that originated after a tragic crash in Kipton, Ohio. In this video, we head to the place where this brand got its start and take a look at one of their awesome pieces, Engineer M Marvelight with a new in-house movement.

Growing up in Mansfield Ohio in the 1950’s I can remember going to Cleveland for Christmas Shopping. In that time period
Webb C Ball had a very high level name in Ohio comparable to Tiffanies. I remember the store . My parents would point it
to me. It long gone now, but I remember it. Today I own gold 18s. 21 jeweled Illinois Bunn Special from 1913.
It is a railroad watch. It is very accurate and I think it is comparable in accuracy to modern watches. I have been thinking
about buying a Ball pocket watch but I may consider a modern ball watch.

I love this. Mansfield is my hometown and there is so much history wrapped up in the area with railroads keeping many of those stories. I would love to have experienced seeing that shoppe as a child and experiencing the thrill of Cleveland Christmas shopping with the inevitable dinner out and falling asleep in the backseat on the way home. It sounds like you value your rich experiences. Thank you for sharing.

I own 4 Ball Watches, 3 Oris and 1 Sinn. In my opinion, the best 3 watch brands for their value per cost. Ball is definitely an underrated American now Swiss brand. But then again, I like value watches that are not that well known.

    Teddy,
Thank you very much for this review. As the son and grandson of railroad men, I well remember my dad going to work with a pocket watch in the front pocket of his overalls and a tachometer scale chronograph in his wrist.
The chronograph was a Garland - one of the names of the Ball Factory warehouses in Cleveland (we were from Buffalo). I believe the Garland watches were similar to the Rolex/Tudor branding - not quite as high end as the Ball watches but made to a Ball standard. I know for sure the watch was railroad certified because I remember my father going for the annual NY Central certification. That watch today is in my collection and keeps excellent time for a watch over 70 years old. The chronograph works like a champ. Both pushers and the crown are slightly oversized f/u/w gloves.
Of all the new Ball watches, the watch you reviewed definitely is the most iconic and, while out of my budget, certainly the Ball I would like to wear.
    Best wishes for good health,
    JR Seeger

Teddy, that was a great review. I love the historical background and bringing us right to the town of Kipton to tell the brands story. I have always liked or been drawn to the brand as my Grandfather worked on the Erie RR through the depression years. When I learned about the brands association with the RR industry I could not help but be drawn to it. I learned much more from your video than I have been able to garner from other sources. I loved Bart's comment on relevance and before we went to the moon the RR industry built our country. I never hear anyone review these watches in depth. They are underrated. Well Done!

As a native Clevelander myself, I find myself feeling a sense of pride wearing my Ball watch. I learned about the brand right here on UA-cam when I was looking for some info on quality timepieces featuring a magnified date window. As I advance in years I find reading the tiny little date indicator on analog watch faces more of a challenge. I watched a video review of the Fireman Victory, and looked no further. I bought a Fireman Nightbreaker within a week. That was about a year ago. Today I purchased an NOS Engineer II from 2014 at an online auction, COSC certified on a genuine crocodile strap with a white face; a watch that retails for $2700 cost me a mere $900. It feels so good to finally have a pair of Balls. My dream has always been to own an Omega watch, but I’m really beginning to rethink that. I don’t think I’m compromising anything by wearing a Ball watch instead. They make one to suit everybody’s taste and need, they’re reasonably priced, and the overall value can’t be beat. Thank you for your deep dive into the company’s history and the importance of Mr. Ball’s contribution to the standardization of timekeeping.

I thought that looked great on Instagram, but to see it "in the wild" with that great videography was pretty astonishing. A truly gorgeous watch. The movement looks like a work of art, i love the open space back there. A nice juxtaposition of minimalism with the highly decorated surfaces. You should be proud. Great story along with it, and thanks for keeping us entertained ...it's great seeing watches on your channel we wouldn't see anywhere else.

Ever since I learned about tritium lume and specifically this method of having it inside glass tubes I've loved the look and thought I'd definitely have one in my collection some day. This may well be the one I go for, and I entirely agree with the decision to put it on a strap rather than the bracelet.

Excellent review of a fantastic watch. I sold my overrated Tudor GMT (date wheel never worked right) and bought a stunning Ball Hydrocarbon GMT and never looked back. Ball makes the best watch for the money- bar none. If you are in the market for well made watch, take a look at a Ball first, it punches way above its weight class and has the history to back it up. Two thumbs way up.

Many thanks for a great presentation. One day I was thinking about the 1891 train wreck so I used a great (and free) historical newspaper database and read the accounts filed in the local papers. Reading the news stories provided depth and drama to a railroad tragedy that occurred over 120 years ago. Others have praised many aspects of the Ball watch so all I will add is their bracelets punch well above their weight class.

Love this review Teddy as I was an Engineer on the railroad for 42 years... Retired now... Actually the headquarters for Locomotive Engineers was located in Cleveland, still is... (Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers)... Ball makes great time pieces and some of my fellow workers had Ball pocket watches... I actually wore my Grandfathers Elgin "B.W. Raymond" pocket watch for about 20 years (that my Mom gave me when I hired out and she kept after her Dad passed) before I went to a Seiko wrist watch, railroad approved of course... Had to get my pocket watch inspected, early in my career, every couple years for accuracy... Time is of essence on the RR... Still have my Elgin... Love this Ball Engineer, beautiful watch and love the case back with the decorated rotor and engraving and the leather strap, awesome... Underrated is a fact when it comes to Ball agree with your assessment....Loved your review...! GG... Indiana

I've owned a Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon AeroGMT II for 4 years now. My only beef with Ball... their naming conventions! ;-) I've literally worn this watch daily for that entire time. As a corporate jet pilot who loads luggage and generally abuses this watch, it's a beast! The crown guard and incredible lumen made the AeroGMTII a no-brainer for me. I own two Ball watches. The Engineer II Marvelight that I bought in 2015 and the Engineer Master Endurance 1917 that I bought in 2017. The Endurance was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Antarctic expedition of Ernest Shackelford in 1917. They are both absolutely magnificent timepieces with awesome accuracy and impressive lume. I wear them all the time in a rotation alternating between them and a third watch I built myself in a workshop I attended at a local watch shop near my home.
The feature that led me to Ball is the tritium lume. I especially like the fact that the tritium does not fade out like luminova does. It glows constantly and can be easily read all night long. You can get tritium in other watch brands but they are almost exclusively sport/diver watches and what I wanted was a dress watch. Ball was the only brand that fit my requirements.

I’ve owned a Ball Engineer Master II chronometer since 2004. It’s been a great watch to own. I’ve had it serviced three times and the tubes were replaced during the last service. It’s a great performer with a an ETA movement. The watch Teddy reviewed would be one I would consider because of its 80 hour power reserve. Mine only has a 38 hour power reserve which isn’t enough. My Ball watch is no longer my daily wearer, but I still like to wear it once or twice a week. Ball makes a good product for the price.

It's COSC certified, 80,000 A/m anti-magnetic, 100m WR with screw down crown, with a proprietary anti shock system, and multi colored (rainbow) tritium lume on a bracelet all for under 2k. Just go this piece from Gnomon watches .... and it’s amazing!!. I had an omega Seamaster (bond era), and I have to say the finishing is definitely on par! The case, tritium tubes, weight, build quality, everything’s spot on! Also the in-house caliber has been running +1 seconds for the past week, and is finished beautifully. Having handled a Seamaster Aquaterra at an omega ad, I’d say the case and movement finishing is to a similar level. Overall very pleased!! Gonna be a great beater/everyday watch. Great review Teddy

I to enjoy history of a brand and in association with the railroads because many American companies had there versions of Railroad grade pocket watches from Waltham to Hamilton and many others but of course the rail road grade of standard really started with Ball. I really like this piece as it has that tool watch look and feel as does it have kind of a field watch style which I really lean more towards. Thanks again, Brian.

Teddy, impressed by your review several months ago, I kept this watch in mind since. I have more than 20 watches on my collection including Rolex, Omega, Cartier, Hamilton, Longines, Seiko, etc. But what was missing was kind of “versatile watch for any occasion” or “one watch collection watch” as some say.
I know that the ultimate universal watch is Rolex Explorer I or Rolex DJ. Tried several Datejusts, but was not impressed. Today I was at a multi-brand dealership in Moscow and tried Ball Engineer M Marvelight 40 mm with grey dial. It was love at first sight. The dealer saw my excitement and helped me to make up my mind by giving me a very attractive price (equivalent to USD 2,150).
So it’s mine now and I love it so much. Kind of ideal watch taking into consideration all aspects including price.
    Thank you for inspiration!

I know this sounds weird but here it goes. I'm a total amateur watch guy, and I usually have nothing interesting to say, however.... Being a resident of a small town in Northern Ohio I feel like I can finally bring something to the discussion. At 2:35 thats a septic mound which is very common for our soil types. Perc, AKA percolation testing is performed before a septic system is installed, pending on the measurements, the country engineer picks options for the septic installer. The bottom of the mound is usually 12-24" of sand, then the pipes, then dirt. Glad I could finally contribute to a Teddy video.

My business partner sent me a Ball watch a couple months ago. Aviator Dual Time Automatic. It is a bold watch, especially at night with those tritium markers. This watch has quick change independent date numerals, which adds an interesting touch and it is dual time so I can keep up while on the West Coast. When it arrive it ran faster than a speeding train. JOMASHOP honored their warranty program and had it back to me in two weeks perfectly regulated. Actually, I view that adjustment as a feature and a benefit as the watch keeps perfect time now. It just needed a little extra love. Same as its old man owner. I like your work Teddy. Well done.

It's about time a reviewer did a respectable review on a brand so well deserving! Thank You....Love mine! So underrated! One of the best entry lever to mid level timepieces you can buy based on price you'd like to spend.

My dad is a fan of ball watches, one year he gifted me a engineer hydrocarbon deepquest. Love the watch have no complaints on it.. When I think of ball I think of a piece that is made to take shock very well (something that’s often overlooked ) and has that tritium glow on the face..But as you said very underrated brand with a ton of specs for the price. It’s nice to watch a review on a watch that Isn’t a rolex or a patek or AP.

I recently purchased an Engineer III Marvelight. It features an ETA 2824-2 movement that must be regulated by Ball because on my timegrapher it is running at a solid +2 sec/day. Mine sports the blue sunburst dial and it is a beauty. I am so very impressed by this piece that is has not left my wrist since it arrived. Thanks for showcasing this often overlooked brand.

Hi Teddy, I own several Balls and purchased my first because of the rather lame lume on my Rolex watches. I also have the Marvelight with the older (I believe Eta) movement. Recently (several months ago) I purchased an Archangel as a Dive oriented watch; it was number 0001 of 1000. At any rate, I've got good and not so good things to say about the Ball brand. It just doesn't, for example, bring the sense of accomplishment I get from wearing one on my Rolex watches. At any rate I love the lume and at the price point they're a great value. I really enjoyed your video and the visit to the site of the Great Train Wreck. Thanks for taking the time to create it!!!!

Thanks Teddy, This video made me pull the trigger on the 40mm w black dial. Great to hear about the history, the cinematography and edit are on point, and those closeups are very well done. Favorite watch in a growing collection. Gives off an oyster perpetual vibe while still having it's own personality, and looks good with everything. 80hr power! Nothing beats the tritium at night, it's always there at a glance when the lume is long gone. The bracelet hasn't come off this one yet, and probably won't, even though it's a scratch magnet.
Notes to anyone deciding who might not get there hands on one first, the hour indices look slimmer in the dark (the polished borders add visual weight in the light) so the tritium tubes are a better match visually to the ones on the hands at night. The larger 43mm watch size has different shaped hands (not a fan) I would listen to the recommendation and get the 40mm. Embarrassing, but it took me a minute to figure out how to undo the bracelet...It pops open when you pull on the right link, concealing the butterfly clasp mechanism (no side buttons). Also love the way the seconds hand tip catches the light. A great design detail.

Incredible review! I have my great grandfathers ball watch from the 1960s. It’s never been serviced and still runs well and is very accurate! Looking forward to acquiring a modern version for my collection.

That in my opinion is one of the best video reviews you’ve done. They are all really good however the quality and detail in this review shows through. I thought the western flair of the music was dead on. Being onsite added so much to the historic portrayal of the brand. I loved that you pulled in the old photos of the era and weaved them in with current on location photos and video. I’ve been looking at Ball for a while. Haven’t yet pulled the trigger as they have such variety so it’s tough to decide, they’re relatively expensive but the biggest reason is you never see them on the street in person and they’re rarely reviewed so it’s difficult to appreciate them. Your photography and videography goes a long way to bridge the gap. Again. Very well done

Seeing as my dear departed father was in his younger years a fireman on the Irish railway system I’m naturally drawn to this watch brand. It’s all well & good being worn into space or being a great explorers watch but for a time piece that served society so well over so many years, this brand has much more relevance. I thought “being on the ball” was sporting terminology but because of this watch brand it meant being efficient & punctual. I think the very substantial antimagnetic rating came later as a result of steam giving way to diesel electric with those motors producing such high power outputs. It’s a pity their website is so confused what with trying to appeal to so many different genres’. Good review thanks.

Also, I just checked out the Ball collection on Gnome watches, there is one watch that really caught me eye that is different to all their watches. Trainmaster Moon Phase Silver - Leather - Ref. NM3082D-LLJ-SL - check this beauty out! Gorgeous during the day but at night... wow! The moon actually glows.

I very much enjoy your "field trip" videos. This one is up with the best. I have a Ball Trieste that my wife bought me as a gift about 10 years ago. A titanium 600M, 12 hour chronometer chronograph that glows in the dark like crazy is a great everyday watch that you won't see everyday. One could argue that if you only had one watch, the Trieste would be a good choice. - And both of my grandfathers were railroad men, so there's that. Please keep the great videos coming!

I have the Ball Engineer II Master Diver, and it’s incredible. The first ever watch with a day/date/world time complication, plus 300M water resistant with an internal rotating dive bezel! You get so much for the price. I also own Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Corum and some others. Ball definitely gives you the most features and quality for the price. My Ball is 1/3 the price of my Submariner, but has more complications, is more water resistant, has better lume, and no one has ever asked me if it’s fake!

The prior version of the Marvelight black dial, Ohio GMT, silver dial, Hydrocarbon Mad Cow white dial, EH Ceramic XV Diver, EH Magnate GMT (both black and white dials). Not a bad review, I do love the history you showed and I think the TGV channel did a few reviews on Ball as well, it would be nice to no more about who owns Ball and which company makes their movements in Switzerland and where the swathes are assembled. I think with this information it would add more credit to quality you are actually paying for.
