The fact that this guy isn't mentioned a lot among the all-time greats is beyond me. He has the most points total in a season not named Gretzky or Lemieux and gave that offense up to be a more complete player in order to win and put the team first. And if that doesn't scream leadership I dunno what does.
He also sacrificed his offensive numbers in the mid-90s in order to play more defensive as the league just focused on defensive play and neutral zone traps etc.
Truly one of the best leaders I’ve ever seen in sport. Converted from a pure scorer to one of the best two way players of all time in order to get his team over the top.
For a relatively small guy (at least by NHL standards), nobody, in my opinion, in the game has ever shown so much heart, determination & just unrelenting skill as Stevie Y. He's not only my favourite hockey player, but also my favourite athlete. He was elegant with the puck when needed, could take/give a check & had zero issues with dropping to block a shot. He was the embodiment of leadership, if you ask me.
I saw Lance Parrish blast one to CF in his first game - he’s also on my list. Joe Dumars belongs with Isaiah. Thomas Hearns deserves a mention. N.B. Does anyone else remember Paul Woods butchering “Honey Baked Ham” on the radio after each Red Wing goal?
Thank you to the creator who compiled this content. Truly one of the most remarkable players of all time, and often very underrated and under appreciated. I’ve been a huge fan of Yzerman since early-mid 90’s, a time when all my friends thought I was crazy to think they’d win a cup. Watching him lead the team to victory in 97 was for me the most I ever enjoyed watching hockey. When Steve retired I more or less stopped following hockey. Now watching McDavid play I see a lot of the same fire and determination. McDavid is a hybrid of Gretzky and Yzerman and is without a doubt the future of the NHL. Anyway, thank you so much for spending the time to create this video, you allowed me to time travel back to my childhood.
What beautiful skating he had, looks very similar to Forsberg. Great short strides, fantastic turns and good lateral movement. Always a heads up player aswell. The goat
I'm a Sharks fan, but seeing Yzerman play was always a joy no matter if he scored against us. He was overall a great player who I looked up to as a kid, great leader and always made me happy to see him play.
I live in Toronto but have always been a massive Stevie Y and Red Wings fan from a young age. I'm lucky and proud to say that in my short lifetime, I've witnessed my all-time favourite player and fellow Canadian, Steve Yzerman, win 4 cups with this legendary team. Definitely would not have been able to say the same had I become a default Leafs fan.
In my (probably biased opinion) the best captain and is easily in my top 10 best players in the history. This man had it all, he had pure skills, speed, strength, a great shoot and pass, creativity, top notch leadshipskills, heart, determination and he had that rare ability of making other players around him better. Yzerman is also very well respected in the hockey community for his humble, professional and calm nature. There will forever only be one number 19 in my heart, truly one of the absolute biggest names that have ever graced this wonderful sport. *Steve Yzerman aKa The Captain*
There are many men who have earned wearing the C, but only one is known as "The Captain." Yzerman was the toughest, hardest playing guy on the ice I ever got to watch. He gave everything he had, every night. He was the embodiment of what it means to be a hockey player. From all of us who had the privilege to watch you play, thank you, Mr Yzerman, for everything.
My all time fav NHL player. I miss the 80s and 90s NHL. That was my childhood and that golden era of the NHL will forever live in my heart. I remember every goal, every assist and every game.
What a time to be alive, half of these goalies didn’t even see the puck until he’s skating away. I was born in 91 and watched a lot of games as a kid with my father, it was a golden era for about twenty years but I see us coming back to that soon with him in charge
Was my favorite hockey player growing up and not from Detroit. Always wore his number as a kid playing and only got Yzerman blades. Anyone who wants to be great needs to take time to learn how we played and lead teams.
Watching this really gives you memories of when Red Wings were GODLIKE on the ice. I wars born 2005 so i dig not get to see when Yzerman slayed on the ice. I sweat that one day Red Wings Will get a new GOD on the ice. The latest one was datsyk. They really need a new one.
That Stevie goal gets all the love, but while it's great, I'd argue this was way more important (and certainly one of his most overlooked). This was a huge goal in a series in which the Wings were trailing 1-0. Game 2, on the road and they had fought back from being 2-0 down. Just a massive goal. ua-cam.com/video/kQCKl0vStrQ/v-deo.htmlm50s
One of my all time faves! His ONLY negative is that he can be a little babyish at home with big guys like Kocur, Probie, and McCarty protecting him. The game he went after Dan Keczmer was silly. Sure Keczmer caught him but it was CLEAN. Stevie just had his head down ....
His passes were right up there with Gretzky's, if you ask me. I also loved watching Stevie kill a penalty, often almost single handed, lol. The man was an artist.

Definitely does not get the credit he deserves.
Lafontaine had more in a season
@@Igoruhandchu Nope. LaFontaine 148. Stevie 155.
Espo and Bernie are the other two with 150+ points/season.
He also sacrificed his offensive numbers in the mid-90s in order to play more defensive as the league just focused on defensive play and neutral zone traps etc.
It doesn't matter. Everyone from Detroit is synonyms on yzerman. Best captain ever, greatest red wing ever. Greatest captain in NHL history, fight me.
Truly one of the best leaders I’ve ever seen in sport. Converted from a pure scorer to one of the best two way players of all time in order to get his team over the top.
155 points highest by any player not named Lemieux or Gretzky

As a kid from Detroit in the 80’s it was all about Kirk Gibson, Isiah Thomas, Barry Sanders and the Captain Mr Yzerman!!
Sanders only played one year in the 80s.
@@c.san.8751 ok Billy Sims then
And Sparky!
Don't forget Trammell and Sweet Lou!

Greatest Captain in NHL history. It's a shame this video is only 5 mins long. It IS great, though!
I completely agree. Could be 5 hours, hell... 5 days long, and it still wouldn't show every great thing he did.

And on the 19th of April, 2019......#19 came home

Thank fuck for the Captain! Detroit will Never Die!
Yup . He was a pure gamer . He worked his ass off
Lidstrom, Yzerman, Fedorov, Shanahan.. The list of names is long.. The good old days.

Love how you paired it with nemo.
65 goals 90 assists 155 points in the 88-89 season 3rd best only lemieux and gretzky had higher point totals for a season fun fact

Absolutely deadly in the slot
A true leader. In my opinion best captain ever in the NHL.

Yzerman single-handedly turned the Detroit dead wings back into the Detroit Red Wings
If it wasn’t for that major surgery on his knee.. he would be top 5 or 4 scorer! He’s a fucking gamer... the Captain of all sports!!

Loved his playing. I used
his Louisville TPS stick , it had a long blade and a curve right at the heel
Steve Yzerman and Luke Skywalker were my heros.
Great job!
