Only other guy I’ve seen with as much creativity with the puck is Pavel Datsyuk. Kovalev was an absolute wizard with the puck on his stick, he made a lot of great players look absolutely silly over the years with his dizzying fakes & dekes. He also possessed a wicked shot and was a very strong skater, especially considering his deft balance & sudden directional changes. A truly one of a kind hockey player, Alex Kovalev!!
This guy was big, could skate like a seal in water and could shoot like a howitzer....he helped the NY Rangers beat the Devils during the playoffs and contributed greatly to the '94 Stanley Cup. Why his jersey is not at the MSG rafters is a freakin" mystery....and why he wasn't more talked about when he retired is also a cunnundrum..
His jersey retired? Are you serious?
this guy was awesome. My favorite player. Abdolute ankle breaker and highlight show every game.
He was awesome but he underachieved as a ranger. If you look at his time in Pittsburgh and Montreal he played much better but had the team success with New York.
@@Igoruhandchu coaching staff used his talents incorrectly. But I agree overall his sklll set and athleticism could have made him best player player of all time. He had an absolute cannon of a shot too.... both snap shot and a quick snap shot.
@@gene7314 he had world class skills, I agree could’ve been #1. Still had 1,000pts
Watched him growing up (a Habs fan), and remember hoping before every game that the Canadiens would get the good Kovalev that night. When he felt like it, he was one of the most talented players in the league. When he didn't, one of the smartest floaters around. Rare skill on this guy. Great highlights.
So true. Rangers fan
It's been 11 years now and Montreal is still waiting for someone with his skills to show up.
You will be waiting a realllly long time lol
@@funtimes8296 I know...😂
You had John The Allstar MVP Scott. That's close enough eh? :)
2009 skills comp in Montreal during the newly introduced shootout event, everybody was trying their favorite practice dekes and Kovelev comes down and snipes top corner. Keep it simple. The most lethal wrist shot him and Sakic
Fun Times I don't know if you ever heard of someone named Cole Caufield. But, he's supposed to be pretty good
how about Alex Mogilny?
Connor McDavid reminds a lot of Alex Mogilny. Kovalev was the man....is he still playing in Russia?
And his wicked snapshot with that toothpick twig!
In his career he only had four seasons where he averaged a point per game. He scored 1,029 points in 1,316 games. He had a good career. He should’ve had a great career. Considering the talent he possessed, I don’t see how anyone can say he didn’t underachieve. He should’ve been over a point per game player. I watched him as a Rangers fan from 92-98, and I can tell you it was maddening at times. He didn’t know how to make the simple play. Every play had to be a Picasso. I only reserve this kind of harshness for players I know were super talented. He had as much talent as any player I’ve ever seen.
@Y GI agree to a point.
he won a cup and had over 1000 pts in his career, that's a great career. People can't be the best all the time.
Average players don’t even get 1000 points and I’ve never seen anyone be as talented as him. I see what you mean but he was turning a sport into art. Nowadays all you see is dump and chase and players skating 100mph. It was actually fun to watch when we had players dangling and making tic tac toe plays on every goal. That’s what hockey should be and my dad was the best at it
@@kovi.1427 He was not average. I never said he was. He was well above that.
@@kovi.1427 he is regarded as the 4th most talented player in NHL history.... he wasn't the fastest skater but was an incredible skater the way he could shift in an out of zones his passing was also incredible we all know about his wrist shot is among the greatest who ever played the game and his slapper. I would say Very Good Career wouldn't say great however
That flying Lex Luger elbow on Darcy Tucker was legendary. Don’t piss off l’artiste.
Big strong guy...with the agility of a flyweight...and the hands of a surgeon...could shoot the puck very hard, with very little warning!
And absurd accuracy. He was a menace in the right half wall on the PP. he’d go top right corner with just enough room for a puck to get in and he made it look easily. Raw skill he might be #1 all time
If he was motivated i think Kovalev could've been the GREATEST player that EVER lived.
The strongest hands I've ever seen
Motivated?
He looks motivated to me
Probably the most gifted player in terms of skills of his generation. He was that good. He should have led the league in scoring multiple times. But he had to make the perfect play every time instead of the simple one and he only played when he wanted to. Good career but it should have been so much more.
Kovalev had more overall skill than Fedorov. Alexei best hands + power in the league. Maybe only Jager and Lemuiex could compare. Fedorov was a better more finess skater. Man those were the good old hockey days. But I'm glad to say the game is still just as good today.
best kovalev mix out there
If he would have been fully committed his entire career he could have easily been a top 50 player ever.
If we talked about pure talent and not points scored, He's top 10.
excellent player
HEAT 🔥🔥
The most talented puck handler ever up until this generation. Wizard.
I don't think anyone is still is as good as him. McDavid and McKinnon have sick hands but Kovalev's hands plus head fakes and shoulder dekes were insane. This is like an NFL running back with a hockey stick on skates. and it was impossible to knock him off the puck.
Kane was close with his silk hands
this guy marked my childhood
the bomb
He is from Togliatti. Welcome.
He is so fluid. A bit like Kuzy but more talented.
Great vid! What’s the name of song around 5:40 mark??
Everyone says he played under is potential and that he was one of the most talented ever and i'm not sure that he really had all the package. Awesome hands, some of the best i've seen. He had such a control and speed on the puck and he had really good shot(snapshot, shoot and backhand). But his speed and mobility i think was his weaknesses that made him fail a lot of his plays. His body was so big but he seemed sometimes to have no flexibility and to be to heavy. Peoples were just so impressed by his hands that they tend to overrate him.
If you're Habs country, you should remember how he was one of those labeled as "lazy Russians". He'd be quiet some games, and others he'd be a total menace. A lot of Russians seemed to come with that plague in those years for some reason. He didn't need Ovechkin's speed to get his point across, honestly, it just seemed like he was more motivated some games than others. He has one of the best shot accuracy the game has ever seen though, and that's criminally understated.
possibly the worst more inaccurate observation of Kovalev's skillet i have ever heard lol. This dude was the complete package. His game would translate better to today. He absolutely killed it after he left the rangers the 1st time. Mike Keanan just did not understand how to utilize him.
What do you mean "his speed was his weakness?" He was fast enough.
His inconsistentancy was his downfall, some games you wouldn't know he was in the lineup. But when he wanted to play, the guy was untouchable. One of the best skaters I've ever seen, so strong on his feet. His hands and shot are among the deadliest in hockey history. The guy was unbelievable if he felt like playing.
Who should I make a video on next?
Zach Parise would be sick!
Oh that’s a good one, btw I looked up your channel. Your editing is unreal, you gotta send me what you’re using for overlays
Imuzi, what do you mean by overlays?
Boggs Productions the effects you’re putting over top the video footage. The stuttering effects as well are slick
Imuzi, Thank You! The app I use to do that is filto.
My first favorite hockey player 🏒 unfortunately he played better when he wasn't a Ranger
Great video, I did a video about his career too ;)
Let’s go
Did it live up to the expectations?
Imuzi Obviously, most under appreciated player in Nhl history in my opinion. Needed the recognition
I’m happy that you enjoyed it. Doing this video was eye opening to how nasty this guy was. Being on the west coast we never saw a lot of him
Imuzi A reason why I enjoy this channel so much is it gives me an opportunity to watch highlights of players I didn’t have full access to during the early 2000s. Have faint memories of watching these guys on ESPN back in the day, great to reminisce on the pioneers of the sport today
The All Eastern Conference player. 2:45 with the Beezer..
#27 🇷🇺
Perhaps the greatest stick handler but backed up with a lack of consistency.
Sooo many against Philly
