As an architect and interior designer with several years of experience, I would like to share the following observation. It has been the fashion in Architectural Studies for many years to teach us "multifunctionality", compression of space, tightness, as a brilliant idea. Living small, etc. A bit like those cabinets on wheels in the movie, which can be seats, ultimately not going to sit on them. Examples can be multiplied: Small kitchen? No problem, insert mini sink, mini dishwasher 0.4m wide. Make a mini kitchen, but necessarily with everything from a mini oven to a dining table that slides out of the countertop. A living room with a sofa? Ok, but choose a practical sofa bed. It will accommodate guests when they want to spend the night. Not enough closet space in the bedroom? Raise the bed and make a storage under it for rags. It's so creative! Approach this advice with caution my dear friends. What may seem illogical at the moment in contemporary design fashion will bring you relief in your apartment. Sometimes it's better to adapt your habits to the space than the space to your habits. Perhaps you don't need so many clothes to be stuffed under the bed and increase the number of nooks and crannies to collect dust, just one closet and better quality clothes will do. And so you hardly ever look under the bed. Perhaps you don't have friends dropping by for sleepovers at all, and a non-folding sofa would be a better choice. Perhaps you need that full-width dishwasher, because nothing fits into slim dishwashers when you have a small child. Perhaps it's better to invite friends to a restaurant or picnic than to buy a coffee table with 5 functions that can expand to the size of a dining table for 12 people.
Think wisely. A simple chef's knife works better in the kitchen than a Swiss Army Knife with 101 functions. Cheers!

I just moved in a 28m2 with my boyfriend and I have to say... multiple purposes furniture is key! We bought a bar that we also use as a cooking counter and an eating table it also seperates our kitchen from our living room and it’s brilliant.

This is such a productive video. Your observations about the need for a space to not just be functional, but also cozy/warm are spot on.
It's also nice that you were honest about the comfort of some of your past designs. Comfort seems to be left out of the equation in a lot of these multifunctional small space designs. In some of these videos, you even see hard benches presented as "lounge space"

Looks beautiful! The only thing that I'd question is the sense of transitioning from a bed that can be accessed from both sides to a single-side one. At the end it's not just about the drawers, but also comfort for two people to use the bed, as well as the ease of making the bed. Bedside tables are great, but this change resulted in only one fitting in... To combine a drawer bed and bedside tables, to me the perfect solution would be to go with a notch smaller drawers when building the bed in the first place, leaving a drawer-free gap at the end for the tables to fit in. That way both would get a table and both could access the bed comfortably.

    Love the rug and lamps.
I know why you chose your coffee-cum-dining table, but I think it looks chunky in the small space. I wonder if you could do with a much smaller more organic-shaped (nesting?) coffee table, perhaps with storage beneath. In that case, instead of the sideboard (though I love its texture and curves, especially compared to the former storage cubes), you might instead have a more traditional dining table. I am imagining a narrow table with lateral extension (side-to-side) that would straddle an upholstered storage bench sitting tight to the wall under the window when not in use. Then you could pull the table out when extra seating in needed, and use the folding chairs on the open side instead of having to sit awkwardly on the couch to eat. When not dining, the table could serve other purposes, or just hold a couple of pretty accessories (i.e.: a tray, flower vase, family photo).
Personally, I'd like to see just a touch more colour and pattern somewhere in the space: soft sage leaf pattern, a bit of blush pink, warm pumpkin, cheerful mustard...
I'd love to see softer, less industrial legs on the couch.
I would choose a desk chair with a similar style, but if it were upholstered with arms (soft velvet in an accent colour, maybe tying in with coordinated a textured couch throw or patterned pillows), it also could double nicely for extra living room seating when needed.
Having slept for years next to the wall in a small room similar to yours, I wonder if you might rather have a bit of space on that side, with floating bedside lights and small wall-mounted bedside shelves, or even a narrow headboard rail to hold a phone, glass of water, book, piece of art...
I would add sheer white curtains to the living room window, which would further soften the space with out adding any visual clutter or darkening the room.
Finally, I would hang the pathos plant that now sits on the console. It would draw the eye up, free up surface space and look more interesting without adding anything extra to the room
This lovely space has an impersonal masculine feel rather than a lived-in 'family' vibe and I wonder if you plan to return to live there again with your wife and baby? 👍

Hi Daniel, nice space you got there. I'm also an architect who recently learned some interior design through your link on skill share. I would say I struggled with designing interiors to eliminate the 'coldness' of a space.
One thing I would suggest is have larger artwork above your sofa and bed because of the 1/3 aesthetic rule. 1/3 for the bed/sofa and 2/3 art. The art should hang 6" to 8" above your sofa and bed. You can use a larger painting, or have multiple photo frames to create a nicer warmer interior :)
