One thing I admire about Cliff is how content he is with what he has in life. The guy spends all day every day around his best friend whose clearly richer and more famous, and yet Cliff is this loyal friend, never acts jealous, never asks for more. He just seems completely comfortable with himself and his life lol
Yeah, it's a very Hollywood view of being, well, a loser. Pitt makes him so cool and charming and Tarantino paints such a romantic picture, you'd actually trade the guy's life for yours. But in reality, he'd be just running errands for Rick, pissed off in laundromats, waiting in traffic jams, lines in supermarkets, no money, no family, no social life, bad food, no healthcare, just lonely evenings in a trailer stinking of old beer, cigarettes and dog food.

The peace of mind of Cliff's lifestyle the movie sells doesnt exist. That's the thing. If you are a bum living alone at his age, in a trailer...cheap food, cheap small bed, cheap small car, old torn clothes, no dental, no healthcare.
The movie shows picturesque sparse moments from this life which make it seem like it is this way all week, all month, all year. That's how movies mess with people's heads. They create a picturesque reality and we all kinda sorta have it in our heads as our goal, we all strive for it, but it is just a collection of moments which ignore the real life. It is aecarrot dangling in front of us in our mind. It doesnt exist. It is just a dream to make us feel better in our reality.
In reality we are all Rick Dalton pretending to others we are Cliff Booth and because some pretend it really well, we think somewhere it exists. When in fact those who live like this in reality are usually dumb, irritating and they dont even know better which is not how people like you can function.
If you are a president (which I doubt honestly, presidents dont make comments like this:)), kids, family, a lot of stuff to do. Good money. That's as good as it gets for normal people with some brain. Enjoy that.

He's a modern cowboy/samurai archetype, simple. His character's purpose is to contrast rick who only pretends to be those things.

Yeah, I don't think that was really high quality dog food, based on the fact that the cans he selected were 'Rat Flavor' and 'Raccoon Flavor'. (I paused it to try and get a look at the other cans on the shelf, but I could only make out 'Bird Flavor'.)

Love how there's that moment where Cliff pauses for a second before selecting the second can of food. As though, despite its presentation and within reason, he's putting thought into Brandy's meal.

Brad Pitt has a way of playing these care free, no attachment characters that makes me want to sell all of my things and travel. Benjamin Button, Fight Club, Legends of the Fall, Seven Years in Tibet and now this film. All of them give me that feeling.

This is the mark of a fantastic director. He can take a scene of a man making dinner for himself and his dog and make it thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish
This scene speaks right to my heart.
The novelisation reveals Cliff has had Brandy for four years. A guy owed Cliff $3200, but instead of pay it, he introduced Cliff to Brandy, a fighting dog.
They entered her into fights and won them all, until she got badly hurt. The guy planned on putting her in another fight while she was still hurt and then bet on the other dog to win.
Cliff instead snapped the guys neck, dumped the body, and vowed never to make Brandy fight again. Thus, they are now inseparable.
Cliff literally made Brandy fight the Hippies during the finale

In the book, brandys backstory is she’s the Muhammad Ali of dogfights. A guy who owed cliff a lot of money brought Brandy to him to help get out of a debt by fighting Brandy. Being a muscular, hulking pit bull was enough to wreak havoc on the hippies, but that explains why she’s SO good at it.
Dogfighting is something done by the scumbags of the earth but I'm glad Cliff adopted Brandy and gave her a happier life

The female dog has a penis. Tarantino clearly took a page from Kubrick's the shining when making this movie and included tons of subliminal little inconsistencies to fuck with peoples heads.
This is my favorite scene in that entire movie. Living back then was SO much more laid back. Eating Mac and Cheese from a pot, Your TV had 3-4 channels,. no internet, no cellphones, you listened to FM radio when they used to play a WHOLE album, and not crap music, GOOD music, you had paperback books to read instead of your smartphone, simple life, but in my opinion, people were way happier.

This scene was the most memorable part of the whole movie for me, I don’t know why.
It's a pretty crucial scene to the movie in order to give the audience that perspective into Cliffs home life, if anything to see how different it is from Rick's and the rest of Hollywood...but mostly to build character

I love how in this scene they establish the dog food can is heavy as fuck, so when Cliff uses it to brain Sadie in the finale you know it would hit like a lead brick.
Funny thing about heavy foods too, Cliff is drinking condensed milk before the fight with Bruce, he puts it down on a metal thing he's sitting on, and you can HEAR him put it down

As someone who grew up living in trailers like this, eating Mac and Cheese like this, there is an odd sense of familiarity and coziness in this scene.

Good Food for Mean Dogs. Rat and racoon flavored. Q is the epitome (pronounced Epi-Tome) of genius. He completely captures what it was like in LA at that time. The shops and theaters in Westwood looked exactly like that. The bus signs and local DJs on the radio were what nailed it for me. One thing he got wrong though, there were no bicycle lanes in that era; no white lines by the curb.
Beautiful sound makes this whole scene.

I’m no Cliff booth but I was in army fought in wars in two countries Cliff was a Vietnam vet and I also lived in a mobile home valise enough with my white pit bull max aka maxi my best bud very well trained just didn’t like a lot of people he was abused and there was no way he was allowing someone to take me away from him . I gave him a loving home took him for river walks every day I lived in the white mountains of NH after my Afghanistan deployment. Well first I went to az took care of my dying moms for a year and before she died my niece had max and her boyfriend would hit him etc and she asked if I could watch him wile she found a new place to live. That dog stayed with me till the end and that was heartbreaking when he died crushed me .

LOL his dog was so well trained, they didn't attack the dog food until Cliff gave the signal. We saw how that came in handy later on in the movie. I remember those days of eating boxed macaroni with cheese powder. Nothing tasted better but I put a little milk and butter in mine. Cliff was happy without them :D.

I've met some when they were in their 50's and after. And all of them smoked compulsively, their health on their downward side failing them. But they all had in common a fearless, calm way about them, a never take any obstacles as impossible No answer. So radically opposite of what their children's generation reactions and results were after coming out off their Vietnam conflict involvement. Not sure why that discrepancy and difference. They had no longer "tours" but had to remain mobilized til WW2 ended, their enemy not a small nation but with larger capabilities, industrial weaponry, divisions numbers and over all terrains beyond jungles, over mountains, deserts, fjords, artic, maritime, islands, urban warfare. Vietnam was asymmetric in ALL ways. A bigger Ego's war, sort of a crushing wit's war why so shattering and drained so many off psychologically damaging. WW2 and Korea made harder Men. But off Vietnam many became shadows of men after. What went wrong? How they were received back at Home after. Their Time there, expectations? Their officers leadership, the civilians human resource placed in uniforms? They were a new generation, much different still than all after, all post generations notices them. They had it ALL, have been *having it All* for the last 50 years, *better than their parents* they were the first Baby boomers!!!! Those born after American Allies WON, growing not in the Night and Day different decades of the unstoppable Roaring 1920's and the all crumbling 1930's Depression, but growing up in the smooth unprecedented years of Post War abundance and growth, roads and suburbs, Prosperity and Wealth like not seen before, the growth of a Middle Class like never in History since Ancient Rome or Greece, to be the burger in the sandwich between the former Social Classes at the top and bottom (of The Poor) previously always the larger, by never less than 3 fourths of Society.
I could see Cliff as a centenarian, still living contentedly in his trailer, making himself mac & cheese, taking good care of Brandy II (or III or IV) watching TV, maybe an upgraded version with a DVD player so could he could still watch his favorite old shows, confused by all the streaming services, bewildered by phrases like "Netflix and chill", shaking his head at "kids today".
