Its way faster and just as effective to leave them on the sprue. You can simply cut the sprue into the separate rows and then remove the excess verticals. You then effectively have them on separate sticks without actually having to glue them to.. well separate sticks. You can even leave one of the vertical pieces of sprue midway or at either end to act as a handle. The only models that need to be on actually stirrer sticks are the ones that need separate assembly. (excluding the SM missile troops as they only have one piece that need to be added.
I've done all my Legions Imperialis on the sprue with no problems or delays. It also helps to get the correct figures via the sprue number when doing the basing.
Awesome, if that approach is working for you - that’s great! When I put the minis on sticks - I group them by the base they will end up on, so I don’t need the numbers anymore.
I do this, but two coffee stirrers. Theyre thinner so you can get in closer with the brush from some angles. Two glued together for rigidity, and glued to a base to hold in a painting handle.
definitely agree about not just doing them on the sprue. I was cutting them out because im doing greenstuff helmets, but yeh ive tried a couple and its a ballache. Your methods probably best, although you can just cut out a section of sprue so the tops and sides are nice and exposed. Also find its a good idea to try out a few paint schemes first. Each mini is bassically worth nothing so it doesnt hurt to go through a few trying out different schemes so you can be really happy with your final army.
Wow, green stuff at this scale does indeed sound difficult haha. Just cutting back the sprue sounds like another pretty good way to tackle it. Good tip regarding trying a few schemes early on. Have you decided on your scheme yet?
@@WargamersWorkshop yeh, i wanted something cbrn looking to represent tallarn from the book but I ended up mostly ripping off the steel legion haha I did go through about 8 different schemes though. I would recomend having some contrasting colours on the head and shoulder armour as that really pops at table top level. Stripes on the helmet/shoulder pads are also not difficult and add more variety, although idk how easy it is to add helmet stripes with the normal sized ones. Greenstuffing basic helmets is pretty easy but its obviously extra working you dont want to be doing with this many minis haha
I can’t wait to get started on my infantry! My LI box came with 4 sprues of space marines and no SA, which I imagine most people would relish 😅 Great video!
For me, this is a godsend when I come to paint my infantry. I'm also gonna nick the painting tutorial for House Lucaris to make the Freeblade Knight 'Unflinching Steel' who had abandoned the house when they turned traitor and remained a steadfast loyalist ever since.
Awesome! Are you going to be painting up Legion Astartes or Solar Auxilia? I hadn’t read about unflinching steel - that’s such a cool piece of lore. Have fun painting your knights!
@WargamersWorkshop Both. 53 Thousand Sons and 53 Imperial Fists from one box of Astartes troops, and still struggling with a Thousand Sons aligned Solar Auxilia.
Great video series. Thank you for your efforts in getting this out to the LI fans. Just one suggestion for your future (post June 2024) painting, and filming of it: stick the individual figures along the edge of the holding stick so that the minis themselves are lighted correctly for the video. As you watch it, the stick is creating a shadow across the areas of interest and it is very hard to see the details you are painstakingly trying to record. Alternatively, add another light source above and in front of your position. Nonetheless, good job! Subscribers: +1 I look forward to more great works of art. 😉
Thanks for the feedback and the suggestion! I have reworked my recording setup a bit since this video - using a proper camera and a bigger overhead light. I’d love to know if you still found the lighting in the fast attack box / titan video to be a problem. I’ll definitely look into changing up how I’m attaching them so I don’t paint in the shade. Thanks again!
The ice lolly stick is how I do my Warmaster stuff. The slight difference is that I use a bit of blue tac to hold the stick onto a painting handle. Regarding the middle dudez would it not make more sense to put them on first? Great idea for a colour scheme. I am not sure how to do mine.
Do you find the plastic glue still works through the painted base okay? I’ve had issues when glueing arms etc on normal marines when doing sub assemblies and there is too much paint in the road. Love the paddle pop idea and your content!
Thanks! Yep, I’ve found it’s worked fine for the infantry units - they’ve all remained firmly attached to the bases so far. I can pick up the whole base by one of the infantry. I suspect it may not work as well if you had heaps of paint in the way (e.g. lots of thick coats) or if the unit was heavier.
I’ve found the Vallejo metal air paints to work really well straight through an airbrush without thinning, they also work great with a regular brush without thinning.

Nice! That sounds like a pretty good way to paint them too.
the popsicle stick idea is great. I did my first set of Astartes on the sprue, and I think I'll switch to this for the SA.
Thanks your videos have come at the right time for me putting my legions forces together
Very helpful, well presented. Thank you!

The coffee stirrers are a great idea, as is attaching them to a base. I might try gluing my sticks to bases for my next set of infantry.

Haha, yeah 4 sprues is great if you want to collect Space Marines. What legion were you thinking for your infantry?

I’m doing this right now with my Astartes infantry
Cool result! I paint some SM troops earlier in same manner)

Oh interesting, I should give the bluetac and painting handle a go. Thanks for the tip.
And yes, it’d make sense to put the middle one on first haha!

Daft question but does the Vallejo Gun Metal air need thinning?
I’ve found the Vallejo metal air paints to work really well straight through an airbrush without thinning, they also work great with a regular brush without thinning.
Righto, cheers. I suffer with what I like to call "stupid shaky hands" but I feel like I might be able to do this method!
Are these solar auxilia attached to the Sons of Horus Legion?
Yep! My main army is a Sons of Horus army. I’ve tried to use the same green as an accent to tie them together.
someone share this video with murry and dave from tabletop time that someone has beaten them to it with painting their infantry
