Mads's problem solving skills are amazing. The way he can think through a task thoroughly is truly impressive.
You are 100% a nerds nerd and I love it. Great job I love the content!
Your videos are both educational and entertaining. Really appreciate how thoroughly you explain what you're going to do and then showing us exactly how it works out. Your DIY work is inspiring!
While I will never attempt this on my boat, I found this video to be one of the most interesting and well thought out videos I have every watched on UA-cam of the tens of thousands of videos I have watched. Bravo!
Future reference... placing sheet metal under the floor jack allows its centering action to follow the load upward.
Audio issue on Ava's microphone. One channel is out of phase ie plus and minus swapped around on one channel so when played in mono no sound is herd. And when listening on headphones it sounds weird.
Fix you can either discard the out of phase channel in edit. (the one that cancels with the music) and only have one mono voice channel in edit or correct the wiring of the micrapone into the camera. I would suggest both.
Causes Using an incorrect jackplug or plugging a balanced jack to a stereo in, mono jack into a stereo input. Wrongly soldered cable etc. could all cause this issue.
Really enjoy these videos over the years. Awesome to now have history tours.
That was a great Mads project, solves the problems, conducts the repairs and develops a plan to perfectly re-install the keel.
I have been watching this guy from the beginning. His attention to detail is amazing. He actually reads the instructions on everything he uses and does. I am not a boat guy but have learned a lot just by watching him work over the years..
This is such a classic Mads job, manual reading (rtfm), test fits, timers, material data sheets, material testing, its got it all. I tell my missus, if i need to do a job on my Albin Ballad I need to do it the way Mads would do it.
I'm super impressed with the way you installed the keel. That was a very well thought-out plan.
My wife said that the keel replacement was very boring. For me it was extreamly intresting. Maybe one of the best videos of the channel😊
Well done Mads. You're such a pro.
So much work just for one keel. I cannot imagine any marina putting that much effort into a job.
Mads I have watched every one of your videos (yes I know I am a saddo), and this video absolutely sums up your approach to any job you tackle - you put many of the so called professionals in the industry (including the boat builders) to shame. 😀👍⛵️
I agree.
Wow Mads you are so thorough! Great job!
Mads, you're a real-life superhero. All you need now is a cape.
What are you smokin? lol
I for one look fwd to seeing what cat you will get.
- yes I know you said you don't want one, but think of all the room for activities and possible projects...
I am with you on that. I would think the probability is around 90% that a cat will be the next Athena
I am reading that in L.A. Olympic Games at 2028 Keel Lifting will be introduced! You are the golden winners deffently!!!!!
I continue to enjoy watching your channel. Not a boat guy but enjoy watching the DIY stuff and following your journey. Maz does an excellent job articulating technical information and overall the content is entertaining. I've learned a lot by watching. Thanks for sharing.
Totally flips my brain nothing else holds the keel in place.. LOL
you do such great work ..
Just like the previous video on the drive Shaft this video on keel is very fascinating. I don’t think I have the patience that you have, but nonetheless a great great job. You have a career in repairing sailing vessels, I highly recommend you to anybody who is interested in and repair their sailboat. Good job just loved your video.👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️p.s. your wife also did a fantastic job on all the canvas and all the clear plastic. Good job y’all you guys make a good team.🥰🥰🥰🥰
Sikaflex sells 292-LOT for that application. The shipyard that sold you the 292 should have informed you that LOT means long-open-time.
Dude, and family, I may not comment often but have been lurking for a good while now.
Your Scientific Method of solving problems, (ex: the 20-23 minute popsicle stick test) are VERY impressive! I hope and pray I can emulate, in some small way, you attention to detail when the time arises.
Thank you. Keep on keeping on.
I would have made a tent and run a dehumidifier to buy myself as much time as possible, but I love how Mads ran materials testing and found the precise time that the material skinned over. That’s just an obscenely tight application window. Good golly, 20 minutes 😬😖
Super impressive with Mads methodical approach , due diligence , and outside the box thinking ! I'm just in awe . There's something elegant in Mads work going from idea to the finished product . Much appreciate the sharing of the knowledge and steps as they have other applications outside of boatwork . Mads is an awesome teacher !
Time to get a new introduction, Film and speech. As we know you two so well now.
Well done Mads that was the most spiffy glue up precision location doo dad I have ever seen😊
Fountaine owes you. Big time.
Enjoy the cooler weather here this week.
Your knowledge and/or your intuition as to what to ….and how to do it is “unmeasurable! There are individuals out there that pretend to know, …and there is a guy like you that knows based on his experience and research how to take this kind of stuff - you’re the best 👍🇨🇦
Speaking of Internet 'firsts' would love to see you continue living on a boat/sailing while working on its replacement. Seems like everyone else takes a 1-2 year break from boat life to get a new boat. Be the 'first' to keep living on your boat.😂
Thoroughly enjoyed this.
Top quality and professional repair
I am super impressed by the attention to detail mads spends in reading and following the directions on paints and adhesives to be sure the specifications are within the work window and use parameters. This is actually pretty rare even in so-called "professional" marine techs as they go about contracting work for poor unsuspecting schmucks who actually believe the people they are hiring have a clue what they are doing -or even care if the job comes out correctly.
The time spent rehearsing and choreographing the procedure so the process was under the time limits for good adhesion at the given atmospheric conditions was impressive too.
My mind boggled a little when you told us how many tubes of adhesive you needed. At somewhere around $20/tube that made my head swim. Even though you weren't paying a couple of "professional" marine techs $300/hour to do this job the material costs still were not cheap just in themselves for a DIY job.
Your work quality puts 90% of “pros” to shame
Mads and Ava, it seems you have found your sweet spot of projects and glorious sanding.. Great videos.
Your friends Jerry and Anne from s/v Sweet n Salty in Grenada.
When Mads first knew for sure the keel was going to get dropped, I bet he had also formulated what we saw for the actual drop. I ythink he got his mind from a Cray Super Computer. And of course lets not forget this weeks History with Ava.
When the zombie apocalypse kicks off, Mads is in my top ten people to recruit onto my team.
How does one convey the same sentiment that over 100 viewers have already said....
Oh, Yeah...
Ya Done Good Boy!😃
Fantastic work Madz
Have a great time at the Annapolis Boatshow guys, I wish I was there to place an order with Island Packet. Maybe Next year. Best Wishes. Bob in Wales (maybe a tide me over Sailboat in between).👍🏴🇬🇧⛵️🌟🌟🌟❤️
Well, I was thinking a week's worth of bubble gum chewing and a couple of rolls of duct tape would do the trick! Good choice on visiting the Middleton Plantation! I have an old high school friend who lives in that neighborhood and we went over to watch their fireworks show on the 4rth of July! You know, the holiday we celebrate in America to commemorate the winning of the Revolutionary War where we won our independence from Denmark. ;)
Mads, once again you have exelled your self with all you planning work, well done. I think if I were in your position I may have got and extra couple of hands and guns to apply the Sikaflex but I am pleased for you it all went well. Cheers Ian
I'm curious; how can you be sure that the beads of Sikaflex smooshed - this time - against the sides of the keel slot? I mean you can't actually get to see, right?
Did we get any squeeze out?
Oh So Gloriously Purrrrrfect!!!
I‘m pretty sure that it won’t be long until the wikipedia entry on DIY will show a picture of Mads! 😂
Just the best example of Mads’ attention to details! Huge congratulations 🎉 😊
Mads, the attention to detail and the patience you have shown is just impressive and as eric said a Nerds Nerd well done and thankyou
Omg, this was as exciting to watch as a high-action blockbuster movie! 😊
Exceptional work!
We saw you guys in Annapolis, not sure how you escaped from my TV but it was fun.
Always fun to watch your thought process, Mads. How really cool.
Why isn’t the keel bolted to the hull?
@@Nordic-Song I believe the keel is only to stop leeway, not for stability, so it is light and doesn't need bolts, I think.
Oh Glorious Gluing!! 😁
Hate to break this to you: Sikaflex usually does not cure well beyond a thickness of a few centimeters. The moisture needed for it to cure cant penetrate through such thick layers. Chances are the top of the keel is going to sit in soft sikaflex. There is a diagramm for curing speed vs. thickness in the 292i datasheet.
I love the contributions that both of you give to the channel. The science and the plantation tour were both really cool.
Red Seas also from the UK showed how they dropped and repaired their Leopards keel. That had some intricate lines to line up. Your brother in law certainly picked the best person to help. Awesome
For large amounts get your adhesive in sausages twice as much and much less packaging.
my local pub in my village in England is over 600 years old....😂😂
Mads - Highly recommend reading The Boy, Me, and the Cat: Life Aboard a Small Boat from Massachusetts to Florida and Back in 1912
The Boy, Me, and the Cat: Life Aboard a Small Boat from Massachusetts to Florida. By Plummer.
Plummer sailed from Massachusetts to Florida in a traditional catboat ~20’. The story is beloved by us catboaters and tells a story from a smaller boat experience - smaller than what you often see these days.
I was very impressed by your thorough and methodical approach
Still loving your videos after all these years
OMG! 30 tubes of 292.... Almost like robbing a bank 😮
Well done Mads. As ever, your attention to detail is wonderful to behold. Love it.
Watching this reminds me of my Navy days being at the Charleston Naval Base on the Cooper River went under the bridge many times.
If I ever had a boat built or refurbished, I would want you and Johan as lead project managers!
Pretty dang impressive!!
Very impressive and professional repair. Can't believe the original keel was built and installed the way it was.
Dude, you could built boats and with the brandishing of this video on you tube; I’m sure that you wouldn’t have a hard time acquiring a sizable clientele; heck, Fountaine Pajot might even offer you a job!!!!
Great video, as always! 👍👍 A tip: Before painting over the Sikaflex joint with antifouling, a thin layer of epoxy primer has proven to be effective. In my experience, most one-component paints react with Sikaflex and the joint does not cure properly.
Great work- solid planning - wonderful execution!
bloody good job mate!!!
Please Lord let this man have some Southern barbecue before he leaves😊
You are so meticulous , and so inspiring. I am trying to slow down and do things properly. Hàts off to you
Congratulations on getting it repaired. As always your Attention to detail amazes me.
I still think you're crazy getting another boat but you do you.
Suggesting no new boat for Mads is like telling a painter not to start a new canvas.
It's what he does, sailing is just a bonus part.
I've watched this master from the first and he has definitely spent far more time working on boats than sailing them. But that is the part of the journey Mads seems to enjoy the most and frankly, most sailing channels do better with DIY boat repair videos than the actual sailing videos or videos of some foreign tropical spot.
Maybe because we can all relate to the repairs and the struggle while we all think we already know how to best enjoy a tropical paradise.
Not really sure the reason why but it just seems to be so.
No boat is perfect in every way. And you can't do every option on one boat. Mads seems to really love innovation, electronics, gadgets and making things work for him. Sometimes it's more about creating and progress than enjoying what is.
Let's hope Mads never loses his desire to do. He is a treasure for sure.
And let's hope he does get a new project so we can all enjoy the repairs.
I'm confident that they were nowhere even close on the attention to detail that you displayed when the factory originally installed that keel. It had no choice but to be a grand success !
Fascinating and scientific. Thanks.
Well done Mads and Ava, your attention to detail is superb, and I love how glorious it is when I receive notification of your videos! LOL, Cheers!
Great job as per usual !! As for a future upgrade to Athena - you will get an "Amel" !!... 😊😊
Hey Madds you missed a bit ! Yeah right , lol . Nice job , I was glued to the screen !
Love this detail as always Mads the perfectionist
Nicely done.
Excellent video as always. Your attention to detail is impressive. No slap on and dash from you for sure! The tour narrative was also well done with a very diplomatic hand at the delicate subjects at hand in such a historic place in history!😀👍
Excellent work on the keel repair! Your planning for the re-install was riveting - you are a nerds nerd, indeed, Mads! Love the US content!
Great job!
as always your attention to detail is impressive!
Love the practice takes. It was a lot of extra work but paid off in the end. Also, I have been watching a channel RAN sailing and Mads he called you out while doing "Oh glorious sanding"!😁Thought it was awesome to hear different channels refer to others. What a great community!
Mads, You out did yourself, I was glued to my seat, so exciting and interesting. An you did that with Glue. Bravo
Great you’re a genius 👏👏👏👏
Enjoyable and satisfying, as the repair and maintenance videos you so excellently make often are. Chapeau!
Amazing job and excellent problem solving and logistics planning. I still can't believe there is no mechanical connection between the keel and hull, but at least you recreated the original construction, probably better than that. Let's hope they don't meet any mischievous orcas.
Looks like another high quality job. Well done
I know it's too late just wondering if you put tubes of glue in refrigerator the night before if it would have extended your work time. Love the show.
I really like watching and listening to your thought processes you use to perform tasks. I may, one day, need to use some of your processes to apply it to something I’m working on. Keep up the good work.
Well done man. That's a legacy video.
Great video as usual!
Also great mix of DIY and colorfull local atmosphere and history.
Thanks to both of you from sunny but colder Denmark.
Better job than the original builder……..brilliant channel thanks!
Nicely done fix. As to the manufacturer's process for attachment, it's about as half assed as it gets. I just don't see "fortified caulking" as a sufficient way of firmly attaching the keel. With dozens of other viable methods the one used must simply be fast, cheap, and dirty. I'm sure your fix will exceed anything you found and replaced. Thanks for sharing the video.
That sikaflex is plenty strong enough. I've used it to bond metal and torn the metal trying to get it apart later. With the thickness and depth they have applied it will probably take a month or so to reach full strength though.
We use Sika products all the time in my concrete construction field. I can definitely agree that their spec information, resources, and customer service for recommending a product for whatever problem you have is top notch.
Hi great work and you both put some thought into what you wished to accomplice . Think and think again .🤔🤔❤👍👍
Well done. Fantastic job Mads, as usual
Another great video Ava and Mads .
The Ryobi caulk gun is easily the best tool in the cordless Ryobi line. If you want one for Athena but don't want to futz with Ryobi batteries (which are not long lived) you can find adapters that allow you to use 18 volt batteries from your preferred platform.
