  • It's time to button up the last few projects before going back in the water, including replacing a piece of trim in the galley, making another piece of trim for the head, yet more varnishing, and applying new antifouling to the sail drive and the prop.

    I admire your love and devotion to Ava as a husband as expressed in the attention to cleaning and respecting her needs and wishes. Man to man, this has to be one of the most uplifting and rewarding channels in the world. These videos don’t make themselves and I will always be in awe of your sacrifice and time in sharing with us.

    Hi Mads. The seeming pointless Delrin washer is to prevent electrical continuity between the drive shaft and the prop. Your prop has a splined drive pressed into a rubber bush. This isolates the prop from the drive shaft and prevents damage to the Sail Drive gearing in the case of a prop "strike". The prop has no anode so it has to be isolated from the shaft and the Delrin stops the hub nut or spinner connecting the drive shaft to the prop. Sail Safe mate. Ant & Cid

      Ahoy Ant and Cid :) I still don't think the Delrin washer makes much sense. It did in the past when the cone was alumium but the new cone (I got before leaveing Denmark) is plastic. I got told I needed the washer by Volvo but they couldn't tell me why. Have a great Sunday :)

    Mads: the best anti-fouling I've used for my prop is "cold galvanizing" spray paint. I've tried propspeed and similar products, and every fall, my prop would be covered with barnacles. I saw the spray paint suggestion on line somewhere, and it worked like a charm. I put three or four coats on over the course of about 45 minutes, and the prop and shaft are free of barnacles for a full season. It takes more time to tape off the hull and anodes than it does to apply the paint. Available at any hardware store for less than $10 a can.

    PropSpeed now has a product to remove the old coating from the prop. It's called Stripspeed, and, true to form, it's not cheap. As far as the teak bungs go, you should buy a set of bung cutters. They take up little space, the bugs will be the right size no matter where you are, and it's a great way to use up the teak scraps.

    For the prop, you could grind it all down to bare aluminium, clean it and immediately use etch primer to get a new coat before anti-fouling. Aluminium starts oxidizing almost immediately, and without primer nothing will stick properly.
    I've had good experience with bronze and stainless steel (non-sailboat) propellers. Even with slow-going vessels just polishing the propellers is enough to avoid growth.

    • @SailLife
      @SailLife  4 місяці тому +1

      If we get a bronze prop I think I'll forgo the antifouling on it then :)

    • @DIYglenn
      @DIYglenn 4 місяці тому

      @@SailLife Yeah. Just make sure to get a mirror finish. We did get a couple of barnacles now and then, but less than we had with antifouling.
      Different waters and usage will give different results though, so I guess you’ll have to keep an eye on it.
      At least inspection of the prop is much easier.

    It looks like everything is almost a ship-shape on Athena. I have enjoyed your video adventures over the years and your work ethic. You mentioned fixing the overhead on the boat. Have you ever considered lining the overhead with cork? Cork is a good insulator and is relatively maintenance-free. I also believe it would complement your varnished teak woodwork. My understanding is that cork is used on many European boats and I just saw a 52' yacht on UA-cam with a full cork deck. Just a thought to consider.

    A possible problem with the varnish on the wood counter top is that there might have been moisture in the wood when it was varnished. Bare wood is kinda like a sponge in that it breathes with changes in temperature. I've found that if the wood to be varnished or fiberglassed is exposed to the sun on a hot low humidity day then varnished as it cools at the end of the day it results in a better finish.

On the point of that prop protection when we were in Trinidad we used the sea jet type which worked great, we got some fuzz on the props but not barnacles. On the similar tech for prop antifoul, I think it's due to copper based antifouling being baned more and more places. Think of looking into Si based atiofoul next time for athea or the next one, or there might be problems getting a berth when you return to the nordics.

    I might be mistaken, but I recall that teak is very oily, and does not varnish well. It can be varnished to good effect, but there is likelihood that the varnish can begin to come off. Please correct me if I am wrong.

    The primer for the aluminum prop looks suspiciously like zinc chromate primer which has always been the correct primer for aluminum. Can be had in a spray can for $8 to $9 US. Rust-Oleum makes it and is commonly available in hardware or paint retailers.

    • @svbarryduckworth628
      @svbarryduckworth628 4 місяці тому

      Most likely a cleaning product. For example we have found that those Lysol wipes that work so well on a boat tend to destroy certain varnishes and paints. Spray-9 is another cleaning product that is excellent on a boat for stubborn stains and smells but is also pretty caustic and will even eventually ruin the coatings used on glasses so be careful when spraying it. Just a little misted back in your face will cause micro-bubbling your lenses.

    • @SailLife
      @SailLife  4 місяці тому

      I think a cleaning product is a good guess :) We'll try to be more careful and see how it goes :)

    I'm surprised you don't have a bung-cutting kit. A good kit has 3-4 sizes of bung-cutting bits and matching counter-sink bits. You can make your own bungs out of your scrap that perfectly matches the wood you are working with every time. Those plug kits that you can buy never match and are silly expensive for what you get.
    I'm so glad we don't have a saildrive on our sailboat You might as well decoupage hundred dollar bills over a saildrive as it steadily dissolves and mechanically disintegrates. As you found out on Julian's catamaran the cost of replacing or even repairing these "sacrificial units" is astronomical.

    • @SailLife
      @SailLife  4 місяці тому

      Hehe, sadly you need to draw the line somewhere with what tools you can fit aboard :)
      I don't actually mind our saildrive. I know some pepole are die hard shaft fans but there are pros and cons to both. For our next boat I'll be happy with either one :)

    • @svbarryduckworth628
      @svbarryduckworth628 4 місяці тому

      I brought along a plug kit when we left Chicago in 2018 and it was only a couple of years ago when I finally discover exactly where I put it I used them quite a bit when I was refitting though. When we loaded up all of our "necessary" stuff into.the boat and sold our condo a lot of things sort of got lost in the Tetris packing.
      We still have a few projects left that were never finished before we untied the lines for good and still haven't been punched off the list in 2024.
      I was getting closer to the bottom of that list when we got hit by lightning a couple of years ago. I have used every single one of the seemingly excessive tools I brought and wish I had brought more. I've even re-purchased tools that I have needed knowing that I still have that same tool stored in my mom's garage a couple of thousand miles away.

    • @mckenziekeith7434
      @mckenziekeith7434 4 місяці тому

      @@markpalmer9002 But if that continuity is only in the threads of the stainless fastener it may be less reliable as the zinc (I guess I should say anode) erodes.

    • @SailLife
      @SailLife  4 місяці тому +1

      I've seen a fair number of Volvo saildrives over the years. All of the ones I've seen have been coated under the anode :) The anode doesn't really make contact with the saildrive in that area (unless it rattles loose)

    Hello Mads. Looks good but your bung size issue confuses me. Sorry if I am wrong here. I have cut my own in the past and you size them by cutting the tip off. They are conical, the more you cut off the larger they are and we saw you cut the excess off. So, me think, they weren't set deep enough. Thanks for the great videos.

    • @SailLife
      @SailLife  4 місяці тому

      Interesting :) I've never had conical bungs or a conical bit but that's a great idea :) I always save the lefter over bung and use it again. I guess that would be impossible with the conical ones.

    • @longrangecruise
      @longrangecruise 4 місяці тому

      I see. That to me would be a dowel (A cylinder) more than a bung or plug. You can get a specialized cutting bit for a hand-drill or press-drill to cut them out of scraps. Just google "Wood plug cutter" all north american hardware store should carry some version or other. The plug is conical, the bit is cylindrical. The bung matches the hole only at the top where the eyes can see. The glue hold everything perfectly.@@SailLife
