I'm 74. Listened to this on the wireless age 10. Still the most exciting thrilling win in Olympic history. Made me realise as a little lad just how magnificent our female athletes are
Cuthbert had an afterburner stride....she used it twice, seemingly throwing in a couple of extra high knee lifts...once after receiving the baton...and a kick close to the line as the Brit challenged her...impressive!
Betty Cuthbert was only 16 at the time , and yet she competed against bigger stronger athletes. The difference was she was determined to get to finish line first with flat out speed, strength and determination.
its all about strength to weight. she clearly had the advantage by the evidence that she won the individual sprints. she didnt have more determination than others.

WOW !!! Got clear footage of a young Wilma Rudolph running 3rd leg in lane 1 for the USA.
Amazing footage, never seen this before.

actually she was 18 at the Melbourne Games

Betty peaked as a 100-200 meter sprinter in her teens. Then, when her raw speed waned, and after a brief retirement, she switched to the 400.
Looks like Wilma Rudolph running a mighty bend on the third leg for the US.
yep made up close to 5 mtrs. anchor closed little to none from a so so handoff.. y wasn't wilma anchor?
@@jrnumex9286 anyoen care to guess why?..it was 1956...humanity should bow its head in shame.
Cuthbert was faster than Rudolph in 1956.
Fabulous :-)
Cuthbert had to work for this one. She may have been a little tired for this race.
yeah, she actually lost ground.
My Parents were here
Yes - but why was the 100 Bronze medalist - Mathews left out of the relay?? Its a question never fully explained.
She may have been injured or ill.
Like from me.Baku
1:44-What exactly *is* that object being lowered along the cables?
I'm guessing the 'photo finish'
its the film from the finish.
I love squat women who can run.
That this was long ago can be seen by the fact that almost all runners in this final were white.
