I remember watching the machine like Vladimir Kuts in the 5 and 10K live on television in Melbourne in 1956 as a young tacker. And bearing in mind, that television had just been introduced to Australia, so everything was so new and exciting. His efforts created a lasting impression on Melbourne, and probably the world. Different times!

Pirie had no desire to take the lead at that point. Kuts slowed down so suddenly that Pirie had no choice but to take the lead. Kuts stayed on his shoulder for half a lap, which broke Pirie.

he was actually the developer of fartlek type of training. At that time, it was widely believed that he was "drugged" but it was not proven. Nevertheless, He died in 1975, in an apparent suicide from mixing sleeping pills and alcohol. Near the end of his life, he weighed about 270 pounds for a 5'7-inch body way heavier than usual.[2] He created a whole way of training and competing that it has not been recognized in running history

And all these years I thought it was developed in 1937 by Swedish coach Gosta Homer.

Spelling error, Gotta Holmer, I believe. Most famous exponent was Gunder Haegg, arguably the greatest middle-long distance runner ever. Held every world record at one time from 1500 m through 5K. Best season was in 1942 when in a 82 day period he was unbeaten in every race and set WRs in numerous distances. His 3K WR (8:01.2 ?) lowered the previous one by about 8 seconds. And his 5K WR stood for about 12 years. Was the first to run below 14 min for 5K, to be joined by Emil Zatopek many years later.

@@markcooper7066 Pirie couldn't handle the fact that he got beat that way and it was a coping mechanism. Allan Lawrence was on that medal stand, and he said this was just sour grapes.

Kuts was not a Russian, though. Ukrainian through and through, and had trouble speaking Russian well.
