      I never knew that! Going through depression myself that is amazing he can do that. Most people can barely think straight let alone win a gold medal at the olympics. Proves anything is possible

    Thorpe has the best all-body swimming stroke of all time, legs, core and arms all perfectly synchronised producing unhurried power and speed.

    Can you imagine being 22 years old and becoming depressed because you've accomplished all there is to do in your chosen field? Waking up and not being inspired to try something new because you've succeeded at every venture you've attempted. Amazing.
    And he's absolutely gorgeous.

    Comes out in front of a delirious home crowd, the world is watching on TV, millions have been spent for this Olympics... he's under tremendous pressure. Thorpe wins easily, makes it look effortless and produces a new world record. What a champion.

    Thorpe is on another level and is a unique talent not seen in more than 2 or 3 decades. He looks like he's having a relaxing freestyle while the rest work to keep up (behind). Even Michael Phelps doesn't have the same swimming style or presence.

    Once Ian Thorpe starts kicking in the last 25, it's truly game over. You're not catching him. One of the few greats that had the hype put on him and he delivered.

      I swam in that Olympic pool in 1995). Don't remember the lane. I was shouted at by some coach, apparently that lane was intended for some other swimming style. It was not crowded, not sure why that guy got so nervous.

    He has the best freestyle stroke...so smooth & to think that he broke the world record here & then backed up later the same night to swim the last leg in the 4 x 100 relay & help break another world record...no words!

    wow, this is amazing it's been a long time since last watched Ian Thorpe swimming in the men's 400m freestyle final at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. I was in grade seven in primary school here in Australia and watched this live on Aussie tv stations here in Australia. Just like this was yesterday.

    Did anyone notice he breathe on different side in every stoke for each respective lap! Meaning he breathe his left side for the first lap and right side for the 2nd lap.. amazing!

    Thorpe here in 2000 is still faster than what they swim 400m in Rio 16 years later... and he retired so early into he's career who knows how quick he could of done if he's motivation from the sport didn't wane.

      notsimon5 full textile swim suit it's not the supersuits that were made out of polyurethane that broke all those records.

      That's right. Those suits were short lived and soon outlawed--but not until some second tier swimmers swam to records in them.

      Biederman comes to mind. He bragged still brags about how his suit was better than Phelps, but once the high tech suits were outlawed he pretty much fell off the map.

      Actually in this event, no one has ever swum faster. Thorpe remains the king.
      Ignore the steroids-equivalent swim of Biedermann in his supersuit.

    Forget Phelps. Thorpe “swims lazy” such a great technique. Look at all the “thrashers” around (well, behind) him. A class of his own.

    I’ve just started swimming to try and strengthen my core. I’m really enjoying it. I have so much respect for swimmers! It’s a very tough sport

      Alas all nations have golden periods and then the supply runs out at some stage. In fiarness Australia has a small population compared to say China, USA, or even France, Germany and UK say, so they are going to up against it on numbers alone. Normally they punch well above their weight from that perspective.

    As a swimming teacher rewatching this now i can spot something that would have made him even faster than he was here! He looks forward as he swims, if he had his head down more he would have been even flatter! And therefore faster still!!! Though thats only minor when he is already so fast!!!
