This video shows you all the possible ways to open the door when you have a fault on a Siemens iQ500 washing machine. Model Number shown here is WM16S496GB/10. The four possible problems are
(1) If its stopped mid programme and is full of water, won't empty and machine won't unlock the door
(2) If its reached the end of the programme, not full of water, but still won't unlock the door
(3) If the door handle is broken

What a star in taking the time to film this brilliant fix for a broken handle. Now have to sort out the repair but at least now the washing has been liberated from the machine!
Brilliant - cheers mate! Handle from Siemens cost £30 and was relatively easy to fit too. I wasn't convinced that the cheaper sites were showing me the right part so went with manufacturer.

This is one of the most excellent finds on youtube for me as well. After also breaking the mechanism and being unable to open the damn machine this simple fact of activating the latch with a knife could have saved me 2 hours of work. At least it saved my undies from going moldy and smelly(er). Thankyou mate.

The knife trick work like magic.
Sorted! Knife got the door open and then I used super-glue to fix the handle. Siemens S16 -74. Mark, you are a genius.

I've taken of the plastic grip for now and probably won't replace it since a new one costs 60 euro's (!) and it works fine without. I see in the comments that some people have had good experiences with glue so I might try that.

Mark, I can't thank you enough for this info LOVE LOVE LOVE the little trap door in the bottom! Why do sophisticated technology companies create machines that can't be controlled by humans??? The lock thing has been a problem on all the various machines I've had in vacation appt rentals, when I'm on tight timeline and it's in the middle of the night...I'll never give up my old Sears top load machine :) regards carole from Canada

Thank you Marky O, you save us time, money and effort. Found the manual lock bypass of our Ariston washer by removing the bottom front panel. The trigger string is on the right hand corner. Just follow your instruction and it really works.

Yay, knife trick worked on our IQ700! You are a life saver!
It's super tricky though to find the right spot to press with the knife. My handle was kind of loose so I could squeeze the knife in from the side instead (inside of the handle) of from the front between handle and door, and I could see where I needed to apply pressure (on the metallic part that's connected to the latch). Need to disassemble the door now, betting the same plastic part is broken as it was on your machine.
It's incredibly frustrating that the emergency opener only controls one part of the lock (the one you broke), and not the part that's in the door.
The plastic ridge that pushes the metallic lever was indeed broken clean off. I fixed it by making a hole where the ridge had been and then using epoxy glued a metallic ridge protruding the same height and width.

Great video, thank you. Unfortunately, I couldn't make the knife trick work, so I had to open it the expensive way, but I wouldn't have know how to do this without this video, so still a great help. After having taken the door apart, I would suggest that people start sliding down the knife from the top until they reach the metal lever that opens the door--it is clearly designed to be pressed at that end.
