This moment caught on film is a pure treasure and I’m glad that it’s in history!!! THIS is talent!! PURE talent. No autotune, no twerking, no stupid cussing. Just fun and pure eye boggling entertainment.
Dorothy Dandridge lived a hard life, trying to establish herself in an industry. she was discriminated against, living in a time where segregation was alive as it was then. she is unmatched, like the Nicholas brothers were at dancing .
Perfection. I had the honor of meeting Harold Nicholas near the end of his career, possibly his last tour, in Pasadena for a retro-evening of entertainers. One of the production's assistants provided transportation for him from the hotel to the venue, and I rode along as he kindly regaled us with tales. Cab Calloway was on the bill and totally embarrassed himself because he was in some snit w/the producers and did things like sing off mic or with his back to the audience, and he only whispered the lines in Minnie the Moocher. A terrible experience, as I'd so looked forward to seeing him live Meanwhile Harold was pure class - could no longer dance, but he sat on stage and told stories and I could have listened to him for hours. By that point Fayard, the older brother, was housebound, and between the two of them they'd already had five hip replacements. Those splits had consequences!
Huge props to Ms. Dandridge. She actually kept up with the Nicholas Brothers for a minute. lol! Then of course, they turned on the NOx, and there was no stopping them!!
Aren't they just amazing! Such grace, such athleticism...and they both reached an old age where they bothreceived the full recognition of their talents that they so richly deserved.
Never knew of Dorothy Dandridge but she surely was talented and I have always liked the Nicholas Brothers. I wish to meet these people after the Resurrections and shake their hands and just say thank you.
I think she looked very cute. However, you do realize, that would have been considered somewhat too sultry back then? Showing shoulders and that “short dress”. 😂🤧
"Dorothy Dandridge with the Nicholas Brothers was like hot butter on a biscuit. Too good" - Debbie Allen Timeless class and boundless talent...all 3 of them. The way this holds up some 70 years later extraordinary. Thanks for posting.
Harold Nicholas the shorter brother was married to Dorothy Dandridge andvI know they had one child and after she was born with some type of illness like related to brain damage. She was placed in somem type of rehab facility, I know she didn't live a longtime. Dorothy Dandridge was sad case of a woman being used her entire short career.
+mypugsdad Russian ballet master, Mikhael Baryshnikov, said the Nicholas Brothers were the best dancers he's ever seen in his life. They incorporated ballet and gymnastics into their tap routines. And they were completely self-taught, learning the ballet & gymnastics moves from troupes they travelled with.
OUTSTANDING! Clarity of words and music. Great Nicholas brother dancing, Jive Piano, and a beautiful singer. Dorothy Dandridge. Where the hell did we go wrong?
without question...the greatest of all the dancing duos. Even the great Fred nodded to them ,as shown by the many flash dances they did in his movies and also belive it or not ,in Sonya Henny movies.Sadly the movie industry didn't film just them, they were always the "dance act" in the back ground. I envy the audience at the cotton club..., before I saw fred and gene, I watched the Nicholas bros and the great Sandman Sims. They're dancing in heaven now.
Harpo Times change, people change, styles change. Beethoven wouldn´t have liked 19th century music, Louis Armstrong didn´t like the jazz musicians 10 years after him like john coltrane and so on. WE today, in a world of space travel, the internet and the nuclear energy are just very likely to like a different style of music (in general) than somebody from 1920. I also like this piece of music, but its not like I would want to listen to this kind of music every day,
eberbacher007 Beethoven lived in the 19th century. Besides, you really don't know what he would have liked. He was a master of improvisation on the piano. Perhaps he would have liked jazz. Who knows?
Just too *Awesome* to express fully, when I look at these *Golden Films* though the time may not have been so technically advanced,The era was pure. And our Black people were more *United* and at *Peace* with one another.I wish that existed in this era.
+Ray Shiner One reason probably was that it became too expensive to produce. Who can pay a big band like Count Basie's & the others, in addition to a crew of top actors and dancers? Tap dancing got co-opted by white dancers like Fred Astair, who made the really big money, even though they all admitted the Nicholas Brothers danced circles around them all. Also, for some reason Hollywood eventually decided to write off the Nicholas Brothers, even though they were wildly popular with both black and white audiences, and decided to make a star out of Sammy Davis Jr., as the new phenomenon. The Nicholas Brothers told Hollywood they didn't need the big promotional machine, and spent most of the rest of their career touring Europe to great success. Kind of like how Tina Turner packed up & left for Switzerland, finding greater appreciation and respect for her in Europe than in the US. Hollywood's backing of Sammy Davis Jr. eventually backfired, as he didn't have the class and as much talent as the Nicholas Brothers, and he eventually fizzled. Unfortunately, he took the whole genre of Black tap dancing and singing down with him, as it became associated with the Jim Crow era and the ghettoization of Black entertainers. Even those sensations, the Nicholas Brothers, didn't get paid what they were worth during the U.S. period of their career.
+Ray Shiner I was blown away to see Count Basie's band playing in Santa Cruz, CA, last year! Some of these classic groups are still around, but nobody these days has the energy and drive to perform and perfect such challenging dance routines like the Nicholas Bros.
You have to think about the time. Those same acts could not stay in the hotels they performed in so that made things difficult along with Jim Crow laws and other issues.
Miller said he liked this version of "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" because it was more rhythm-driven for Ms. Dandridge and the Nicholas Brothers' dancing as opposed to the swing version for The Modernaires' vocals...look how hard the band is rocking at the start of the clip! (This is the entire "lift," the section that was probably taken out for segregated White theaters, primarily-but not exclusively-Southern. My elderly teacher friend-age 89-said that here in Louisville, the prints of the films were left alone and ran unedited in all theaters.)
The movie, Sun Valley Serenade, was made to showcase Sonja Henie, a famous Norwegian figure skater. It was about a white band & other white people at a ski resort. The scene with Miss Dandridge and the Nicholas Brothers was removed by many Southern movie theaters due to segregation & unwillingness to spotlight African-American performers. With that in mind, black audiences were denied the opportunity to see this until years later. They were allowed to perform at clubs like The Cottom Club in NYC but banned as customers.
This is a clip from Sun Valley Serenade (1941) with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. It was the first time Dorthy Dandridge performed with the Nicholas Brothers. She was married to Harold Nicholas from 1942 to 1951.
WOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!! The Nicholas Brothers were AMAZING!!!! They deserved MORE recognition than they got!! And did u all see that back flip...OUT OF THIS WORLD!! And Ms. Dorothy Dandridge looks sooo AMAZING!! Just beautiful, graceful, and elegant!! She TOO deserved MORE recognition than she receieved! I LOOVED WATCHING THIS!! I also LOVE tap dance! It's one of my FAVORITE genres of dance! I miss it so much! Hopefully I can get back into it soon! May these PHENOMAL African American entertainers RIP!
Thank you so much for this upload. What a wonderful treat. The Nicholas Brothers & Dorothy Dandridge............dancing to the jamming music of Glenn Miller. It's hard to sit still watching this.
I don't come from the time of swing dancing....but, I have always admired the agility and dancing steps. That dancing style will always be #1 to me. It was the rap of thier day.... I would love to see it come back into vogue before I depart this life?????
Amazing! I haven't heard that much singing from the Nicholas brothers before, wow they were such fantastic all-round performers. I think the Nicholas brothers could've slingshot each other to the moon then landed in the splits! It boggles my mind that Glenn Miller didn't care for "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" I'm guessing he found the tittle silly, but it's such a great song.
brainburrito Apparently, the Nicolas brothers didn't care much for it either, and decided to get Fox to hire Dorothy so that she could make it sound better. Go figure.
You know i could watch these guys all day.. the speed, agility etc of them were amazing.. ..the tap dancers of the 30s/40s ..nicholas..berry brothers..tic tac toes of the time WOW nuff said
I absolutely adore this! This is aint nuthn but pure talent all da way! Dorothy did her thang wit them hot boys... no one dances that way anymore. Bring it back!
Sun Valley Serenade is just a little gem of a movie. Sonja Henie on skates, Milton Berle, Glenn Miller & orchestra (including Gene Krupa), brilliant Idaho scenery, some great tunes and this wonderful number. I wish they'd put it on dvd.

Wow so tap had the Nicholas Brothers and hip-hop has the Les Twins. I dance both tap and hip-hop so this is strangely convenient to watch two brothers from the past dance with such energy and then watch two brothers today dance with the same kind of energy, but in different genres :)
This was the 1940s. The Olympics was cancelled in 1940 and 1944. It wasn't so much of what black people tried to do but what black people were allowed to do. This was the Jim Crow era.
I know. I can imagine each of those guys returning punts in the NFL, competing in the Olympics as gymnasts, even running the show at point guard in the NBA like Spud Webb or Mugsy Bogues. Just world-class athletes each one.
what a beautiful message Michael Slater,,..Nicholas brothers....their talent reduces me to tears considering everything they must have been up against at that time....they are timeless heroes...
Dorothy Dandridge was married and divorced twice, first to dancer and entertainer Harold Nicholas (the father of her daughter, Harolyn Suzanne) and then to Jack Denison. She died at age 42.

The greatest tap dancing duo in history. These amazing entertainers weren't just dancers, they were superb athletes.
Harold's layout back flip into splits at 3:24 is almost unbelievable.
Dorothy Dandridge lived a hard life, trying to establish herself in an industry. she was discriminated against, living in a time where segregation was alive as it was then. she is unmatched, like the Nicholas brothers were at dancing .

The Nicholas Brothers were pure athletes in tap shoes. I doubt there were ever dancer before or since that could keep up. Legends...
Huge props to Ms. Dandridge. She actually kept up with the Nicholas Brothers for a minute. lol! Then of course, they turned on the NOx, and there was no stopping them!!
lol great analogy
I'm just loving this kind of dancing and singing. I can understand them!
Dorothy was enchanting in this sequence and the Nicholas Brothers were amazing. Dot was sexy without being tawdry!
Amen! I agree. You don't have to show all the goods to be sexy!
Maryland Maxima So very true. I wish more women in showbiz would realize that nowadays.
MsAppassionata And then came Beyonce.... These old times were better
I think she looked very cute. However, you do realize, that would have been considered somewhat too sultry back then? Showing shoulders and that “short dress”. 😂🤧
Wow. Dorothy Dandridge was really beautiful! I didn't know she tapped! Wow.
That’s when people had class. All of this talent on one screen is amazing!
I'm millennial and this was the best entertainment I ever watched!
Nothing could be finer! No truer statement in looking for words to describe this past era of showbiz.
I LOVE HER. Dorothy Dandridge was a rare Diamond.

the Nicholas bros. were the best dance duel of ALL time!!!
+mypugsdad Did you mean "duet"? They were, but "duel" kind of also works.

Skill and pride in what they do need more of that in todays world
i had no clue Ms. Dandridge could tap! just fell in love all over again :)
WoW!! They could have been gymnasts and won the Olympics I bet if they had tried! Hard to even come close to talent such as this.

Mark so true.
Wow they were amazing!
Sure was
I remember watching this movie in the 60's and being fascinated by the Nicholas brothers.
