Thanks Clayney, but i have the service manual to thank for helping me through this entire build! Its a fantastic resource for any car that basically gives you a walkthrough on anything you want to do to it, my knowledge is nothing without it.
lmfao, that was a compilation tape i made back in senior school, i got heaps of those to finally use in this car since i installed that new old stock aftermarket tape deck. My Summer Wine is a classic, it just so happened that the tape was queued up there. Probably TMI but Jefferson Airplanes After Bathing at Baxters is on the B side of it, i just love the Psychedelic Rock sounds and really looking forward to jamming out to these psych records when i start driving this tank. Thanks for watching!
Thanks!, im trying to get the car registered at the moment so now im perfecting every detail of it for roadworthy, theyre going to appreciate seeing a Jaguar that doesnt smoke or leak oil!
nah my criteria for tyres is nice and tall with plenty of sidewall meat, whitewalls would be too loud for this car since theres no white elsewhere on teh car
Watched your video yesterday and again just now for inspiration..for my 420 compact.....Question..? What's that teeny weeny air filter for on the front of the engine?
Thanks for watching, glad i could inspire you to work on your own 420. Thats a cover for the cam chain tensioner that also acts as a breather for the engine. There used to be a hard line connecting it to the carby airbox to be recycled by the engine. Since im using individual air cleaners on my SU's, i dont need it piped to the intake so i put a small air filter on it to catch any oil vapours going out and prevent dust or debris from getting in. Conveniently its a symmetrical part so i can rotate it in any 4 positions and in this case i want it facing the exhaust side of the engine to keep the inlet side less busy.
Thanks so much for such a detailed answer 😊..very helpful. I removed the large air filter. And don't want to put it back. Want to do what you have dun. Oh 420 compacts have twin SU.. NOT triple like your 420 G....Godzilla 🤪😃😀😄
@@robinatorsmith I find individual air cleaners useful since, borrowing from the motorcycle world, you can oil up the foam filters and have excellent air filtration. I find that it makes the engine bay less cluttered and improve airflow for cooling around the engine especially in their tight engine bays. Balancing twin carbs sounds a bit easier than balancing triple carbs! I actually really like the 420 compact, the same wonderful engineering of IRS, the twin cam i6 and the styling of the full sized car but in a mid sized package. The 420G, 420 and XJS are my favourite Jaguars.
You need to reconnect the crankcase breather tube to the inlet manifold. You put a tiny filter on, but that will be pushing out, and will fill with oil smoke in no time, and pop off. You need to draw the crankcase fumes to the inlet manifold, and they burn off normally, creating a vacuum in the crankcase… the wind inside is piston blow-by smoke.
I had to look up the concept of Positive Crankcase Ventilation to understand what the problem of my repair was after your comment. It was actually fascinating to find out about the PCV valve and how it influenced engine reliability in terms of regulating oil build up inside the engine and for making gaskets actually seal against crankcase pressure. As a result, im on the search for fittings now to hook it up to my RAMFLO filter housings and additionally to buy a valve to pipe this fitting to in place of the air cleaner, so this will be addressed in a future video.
I done that as per the service manual recommendtions for repair and it was exactly the problem, readjusting the shifter cable to make Park actually Park was the solution and it was a very easy adjustment with the service cover under the centre console which meant i didnt even get dirty from doing it. Shifts great now
Sadly from 2030 on all the combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in EU :-( In Germany the Green party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one state owned peoples gas station per city or county. :-(
fuck yeh straight up 180 and 360's aussie pride way to do burnouts on a small narrow street and a perfect location fuck the neighbors its australia we have the right to do this shit its a free country and a perfect time and nice control love it aussie style good on ya mate
Admire your knowledge and graft. A wonderful car to conserve.

Well done. Are you getting white walls?
nah my criteria for tyres is nice and tall with plenty of sidewall meat, whitewalls would be too loud for this car since theres no white elsewhere on teh car
@@cutcat8437 Good. 205/80x14 if you can find them. Your project is really enjoyable.
Fair enough. My mate Greg has whitewalls on his that look good but the car is actually white with a red interior.

Funny, I JUST bought a 420 compact. Epic cars.

Just adjust the selector cable to get proper gear positions.
