- For 2019 we’re changing things up. Why watch one hot lap when you can see two at once!?! Even though the 2020 Toyota Supra is a Toyota, it’s really a BMW. Check the door sticker. That said, the 2019 BMW M2 Competition is built by the much-lauded M Division, not plain old BMW. Plus, on paper, the M2 Comp makes 70 hp more than the GR Supra, which is really just a rebodied, hardtop BMW Z4, right? @@camryt the M2 probably is, I had a chance to race against one and won. I was in a stage 1 Golf R mk7 (370hp). It was on the street, if it was longer I imagine the M2 would have won because of the bigger displacement. Tbh, I was surprised

I could couldn't care less of what the "unauthentic enthusiast's" think, I still greatly dislike the BMW rebranded supra, it's a complete letdown.
newest bear your short statement is short on logic and coherence. First, I never said that I was an enthusiast, so I could hardly be labeled “inauthentic” (better than “unauthentic”). Second, I mentioned “purists” but never mentioned “enthusiasts”...there is a difference. Enthusiast like most cars, but purists like few cars and hold on to what used to be. Lastly, there is no measure of an enthusiast, no certification or no requirements, that would make a person an authentic or inauthentic (better word) enthusiast.
With that close of lap times I'd say they are pretty much the same on the track. The difference was Randy losing traction on the M2 on the last corner of the track where the Supra was able to exit smoothly. At that close of lap times I'd say its more driver error / preference in handling than anything.

Yeah but you need to trust his abilities. The car lost traction, that's the cars fault. Had it been THAT good, Randy would have exited the BMW smoothly, if it were capable. That last corner on this track is definitely a doozie.
Another fact is with less horsepower this Supra/BMW was a better performer than the m2 competition. The m2 competition could not walk the Supra tho it was more of a neck to neck race or more or less than a bumper of a car from each other.

The Supra was ahead BEFORE the last corner. So leave the excuses on the track.

That’s the one thing I would love to do with the new Supra when I get one but I have been hearing more rumors and news on forums saying that Toyota might add a manual transmission option to the Supra as well as also including a DCT option in the mix so I’m waiting on that

Could be breaks/tires losing performance because the BMW is heavier. The corners are harsher on the beamer.

Wheelbase and weight. I believe Randy. The Hp vs weight ratio. About the same. The M2 competition on drag race will beat the super by a nose on a quarter mile And it will hold lead 800 meters a nose. The supra is a better track car. Not by much.
I consider the m2 the winner because the .2 seconds difference absolutely does NOT make up for the fact that the M2 has a back seat!
Winning by less than half a second is basically a tie. I’d take the M2. The headroom in the Supra is claustrophobic.

Supra is cooler though. It is a real head turner and feels more special from drivers seat as well like a purpose built sports car. M2 on the other hand is a glorified 2 Series Coupe.

The Supra catches up in the second to last and last corner where Randy clearly takes a wider entry into, and exit from these corners in the Supra.

The m2 was ahead for like 95% of the track.. to dub the Supra the winner is kinda questionable. If anything they’re identical. (Yea I’m BMW biased lol) but still.

So Toyota takes BMW parts and makes a car. A car that outperformes BMW. Not a normal BMW, but the M Division's BMW. And in the end gets bashed for that? I don't get it!

Toyota takes BMW parts? Do you think Toyota is building the cars? Not a single Toyota employee has ever laid hands on any Supra going out to market, not a single Supra has even been assembled in Japan. Theyre made in the same Austrian factory as the Z4, by the same workers. They even have a European import code. Hanz Gustav builds the Supra when BMW tells him to switch to the assembly line 15 feet further down the floor after his lunch break.
I will not hesitate to choose the M2 Competition over the new Supra. The Supra wins by a whisker, but the BMW is just stunning to be looked at. Interior wise subjectively I will think the BMW is better.

In fact, he did a better job in Corkscrew on the M2 than the Supra but the car screwed up!
I own a 2020 supra and my previous car was a 2018 m2 so not the newer engine of the m2 comp but I enjoy the supra much more.
The M2 was actually ahead until the very last split coming out of the corkscrew. Very nice video.

other components to tailor how the Supra drives on the road but nearly every part of this generation Supra is BMW.

@@bingoberra18 We don't have the Alpine in the US, sadly. Same with the exige and elise. The problem with the miata is that it's the easy answer, everybody always says miata, and I agree, it's a great car, it's just a bit boring when it's the one car that everybody always recommends or goes for. The only other option then is an 86 or brz, which is also a good option, but that makes only 2 out of the many performance cars out there. Most of them are just bloated nowadays. That being said, I'm not speaking for myself, because personally I would totally get a miata or an 86 and be happy with that. If we want more of these types of cars to exist, we need to buy them. I do wish we had the a110 though.

But on the other hand, with all the crazy SUV drivers I´m not sure I´d like to put myself in that situation either. Id probably go for a used Cayman/Corvette or a chassis tuned camaro/mustang. Enjoy cheap gasoline while you can, in europe you wont find it under $6/gal

I'm glad they put the Supra on the Dyno before the track. Toyota must have been forced to under rate their engines by BMW. Which honestly, makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE! In this day and age head to heads and Dyno runs flooding the internet just make that decision obsolete.

When their 3 years old. I wonder if value will drop as bad as their BMW cousin. I have seen 3 year old 70k Bmw's 15k. They will have like 25 error codes in computer. If you live in a strick emission state. Be screwed trying to get it to pass. Mississippi where I live we don't have inspection stickers. Better state to own a BMW or a Range Rover. Nothing depreciates like them to companies. But I doubt the Supra will Depreciate that bad because of the name.

The supra is literally down 80whp and still won, it's amazing. New supra makes 385whp and better suspension, m2 has no chance

That it is true but handling and setup are Toyota so eat that
The B58 is an amazing 6-cylinder engine and for under $60K not much else can really compare aside from the VR30 from Infiniti.
But that said Toyota going to BMW to produce the Supra means they gave up any chance of designing their own potentially awesome motor/platform
to compete.
They also don't have full creative control over the platform and it will make it difficult to support long-term (as seen with the FRS/BRZ).
Is the Supra good? Without question.
Should Toyota have built it in house? Without question.
@@BigHeadClan It all comes down to profitability and risk. BMW already wanted to build a roadster which is the Z4 so why not just partner with them? Toyota is killing it in the SUV/crossover/pick-up truck segment, they're not going to invest R&D in a two seater that won't sell as much.
@@JM-nz8gw Toyota is already the largest automaker in the world, they can handle the risk associated with the production of a new Supra.
But as I already alluded to in my previous post Toyota going to other manufactures kills any potential for innovation or technological breakthroughs.
New materials, development techniques, engine/platform designs can all be created from such an undertaking.
There is greater risk going about this method yes... but there is also a return on investment to match.
@@BigHeadClan I wonder if that would be the case though. Like I said, the market is thirsty for crossovers and pick-up trucks, even normal sedans are on the chopping block. A 2-seater sports car is a tough sell in this day and age imo.
The beginning of him driving a supra seems more like a safe driving than racing driving until he becomes more confident entering at higher speed and exiting earlier

When you guys do a comparison like this are you just doing one hot lap with each car and then picking the winner based on those two laps? Or are you doing, say, five hot laps in each car and then picking a winner based on the fastest time out of the five laps each car did?
I still rather buy a m2 6 speed, but that is a nice looking Supra.
Next hot lap you should do is the GR Supra vs the new BMW Z4 since everyone says the Supra is a rebadged Z4 ...
You can clearly tell that the driver is able to accelerate earlier in the Supra on many corners. On top of that, you can see him exiting the corkscrew corner losing traction in the M2 which led him oversteer strongly. He also oversteers in the Supra on that corner, but not as much.
Wish Toyota did a recall for the GT86 and swapped that BMW engine in :))
So the BMW WON! I owned a Supra Type IV and was so excited to hear about the new Supra and then they released it. A re-skinned BMW with two seats and there's nothing Supra about it, except for the name. And WTF...the price tag!?!?! Who's buying this over the new Vette?? so disappointed.

Toyota Supra is a 2 seater car. The overall better car in this competition is 100% for BMW. You can run it as a family daily car or whenever you want. And that's the reason why most people will not buy the new 2020 Chevy Corvette.
BMW really didn't lose in this comparison. I know the Supra wears a Toyota badge, but in my eyes, the car is 80%, so in essence, it is a BMW....Toyota engineers can say anything they want, but they didn't go far enough...

Toyota is not stupid. They are not going to put their name on something without tweaking it with their own touch and standards of quality. The new Supra is not only faster than its own twin engine brother (z4) but also has a de-tuned engine with 50+ less horsepower than it's engine mate. Toyota has definitely done something and they're not sharing.
Basically the Supra just happened to win this lap. If they did this multiple times, BMW would win some and Supra would win some. It just comes down to which lap was driven better that specific time lol

@@nessuno5403 well many publications put the Supra ahead of all its competition, Zm40, TTRS, Cayman. 2018 BDC dead last was corvette ZR1, so say what you want. The M2 has 80 more hp, and is still slower around a track, that means the Supra is faster around all the corners and able to put down power early out of corners more than the M2. If that's not what's superior, then whatever.

The launch edition doesn’t have its own set of different wheels. All the launch edition gets a is a special badge numbering it out of 1500, red mirror caps, and red interior unless the car is red then it’s gets the black interior.
M2 with a manual will still be the winner though,because realistically not many people taking there car to the track. My opinion coming form a Subaru brz owner🤷🏻♂️

Rubedo Alaberti I know man, the ratio in the M2 of DCT vs manual sales is 3:1, but if you are going to make a driver’s car, with involvement as a priority and you already know you are gonna lose money, you may as well make it manual (at least as an option). I’ve heard about the tuner in Texas but I personally would not be super comfortable voiding warranty.

Is it me or does the Supra GR seem to have a lot of FRS-ism in it ? it likes to oversteer but very gently and its weight makes it amazing for its power.

@Jappy Time The Supra and Z4 are built at Magna Steyr, and independent factory. Also while it obviously uses a BMW drivetrain, the chief engineer of the Supra is Tetsuya Tada, who also designed the FRS. Maybe you should do more research

Someones gotta say it. M2 comp with a catless or high flow DP and stage 2 tune makes like 540+ WHEEL HP. with that tune its literally a monster. Supra B58 tops out around 440 Wheel with more mods
Bruh you can get the new Supra to 800hp just like the m2 the only difference is one has the s55 one has the b58 and in my opinion the b58 is a way better engine especially the s58. They gotta put the s58 in the m2 theeen it’ll be perfect
Hard to believe the M2Cs brakes got hot. They’re much bigger, cross drilled, six piston calipers etc. only answer is they’ve had a lot of track time compared to the Supra and were in need of TLC.
