We’re sailing around one of the most remote archipelagos in the world. Our fresh food stock is down to a couple of bendy carrots and a few cloves of garlic.
Nikki has several go-to meals that require no fresh foods, but they’re still tasty (according to us). Each week we get more than a few dozen requests for recipes, so we hope this one tickles your taste buds.
Join us as we sail to Fakarava while Nikki whips up some grub and mother nature stirs up a storm! A little sailing, a lotta cooking, one massive squall and a relaxing sunrise. Life at sea can be such a rollercoaster!

Really great music choices this episode.
Also, I suspect you’ll get flak for making this a cooking ep but I LOVE the times you show daily life. I love the morning coffee and the “what we made for dinner” and the sundowner parts. Also there will be people who find your channel because they searched for “cooking on a sailboat” or something similar. Many commenters don’t realize that, so don’t take it to heart.

    • @KarenCooley

I had found their channel a month ago because I finally gave into my hubby, who wants to go liveaboard in about 8-9 years (after our youngest graduates college.) Despite already following Nikki & Jason, I did a search for just that - cooking on a sailboat - and this was one of the results. LOL I love cooking, so I really wanted to know how it could be done under way. :) These moments are so important to capture - not just for them, but others who are curious about the lifestyle. And I absolutely love the way they do their videos! ❤ Makes me wish I could meet them.

Nikki, being a Vegatarian out sailing is real hard, my hats off to you. Living out of a can is normal for me sailing offshore as the island I grew up on in the Aleutians thats all we had until 1975 when they finally started flying fresh produce to us. At sea for me its ravioli out of a can, chili canned or make a huge pot of it, cold tea and lots of oatmeal. Fresh fish when I catch some. Hope to be back out there soon as looking at a 65 steel mono hull. Love your videos, please keep them coming.

I live a mile from the grocery store and my dinners look a lot like yours most of the time. I really need to make my own hummus. The tahini always stopped me, but I think you are right. And? Could probably add a couple drops of sesame oil if I wanted. I always have that around.
I think it isn’t the lack of fresh food that is the problem, it’s the cooking in a moving home that is difficult. Though I always love the wonderful ocean views you get on passage. That’s always the best part of being on a boat for me. 😊 🌊

Hi guys that was amazing!!! Cooking a hearty meal and being in a thunderstorm... I loved how Miss Cleo put her nose up at the carrots and then got mad when she couldn't watch the show all the while Singa was comfortable lying in the sun just relaxing.... I also loved the slow motion you did for the waves and the rain it was so beautiful and mesmerizing... you recipes always make me want to try them out because they look so great Nikki, you really have a nack for cooking really great meals that use only a few ingredients but looks as though you cooked a masterpiece 💜 I also loved when Jason was filming the storm and Nikki and how she kept moving closer to you Jason I thought that was so adorable and cute knowing that you would protect her and that she trusts you that was so wonderful to watch and then in the morning she was calm and watching the Magnificent sun rise... Thank you for sharing your life and adventures I am so loving everything you post either hear or Instagram or Twitter I Love Love Love it Thank you💜💜💜💜💜 can't wait to catch up with you again, Love you guys along with Miss Cleo and Singa🌞🥂🍪💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Nom! Nom! Just love shiitake mushrooms. I used to live in Japan. To make them taste like they do in sushi ,put a small hand full of the ones Nikki was using into a small pan/pot put water in till mushrooms are just covered then add about three splashes Of Japanese soy sauce(Kikkoman) and a good teaspoon of sugar. Bring to the boil then turn down and reduce till the mushrooms have soaked up all the liquid. Keep your eye on it , don't let it dry up completely.

Tahini does add a flavor but I never buy it in a jar. Raw sesame seeds store well. You just toast them in a dry pan until they’re fragrant and then chop them up in your little food processor with a little olive oil. Try it, you won’t regret it.

Pro tip, mix the oil and the lemon before hand till it emulsifys, falvour and texture becomes leagues better than if it's mixed all at once, annnd Best use Tahini sauce works better with hummus, well it's the original Middle Easten recipe. But Olive O. works too.

It did not occur to me to buy the chick peas dried (I usually use canned, but dried is a great idea). Sometimes I add a roasted red pepper for flavor too. The pasta looks yummy. Great recipe. Improvise, adapt and overcome!! And there are few things better than a South Pacific Sunrise...well....maybe the South Pacific Sunset...sadly I don't do pasta anymore...but brown rice would do as well I suspect! Homemade hummus is the mostest bestest, because you can add all sorts of goodies to it to make it "personal"...I use lime juice in mine ...just because I like it better than lemon juice..

Then you guys decided to show us how strong the wind was, well done, because I also thought about that while watching the video. Anyway would be a great place to green sprouts. Sprouts can grow up to 9 days without any light, say in Your broken refrigerator; then need only a couple of days to green. Tons of food value, especially as You live a vegetarian lifestyle, except for fish of course. A ton of sprout seeds can be stored in various places. Always a steady flow of fresh greens.

Yes cumin is a must for hummus , also some cayenne pepper. Carrots, try cutting slightly thinner and pickling them . Do a big batch.. use a little salt, sugar and vinegar. You can also add other flavours like herbs and spices. Fresh ginger and chilli work really well. Full sails to you both.

Take the good with the bad...reflect on the ocean, the sunsets and just being out there doing what most of us really wish we could!
May there be favourable winds and a following sea...really enjoy ALL the videos, my weekly escape is great medicine.
    Keep safe and well....

Hey guys and gals... You probably already thought of this, but as a back up food source, you can buy a 6 month supply of MRE's... Non military versions are available, guaranteed never to starve...
Most come in 5 gal buckets, supposedly a months supply in each... There's also the dehydrated/powdered foods... Some actually like it...
Usually square buckets can be stacked and bungied into any corner, empty shower stall, etc...
Just a suggestion... Never know when ya might have to play Professor & Mary Ann...

And saving the oceans and our planet as its vegan. The number one reason for man-made methane gases zapping our oxygen and killing our reefs and fish is the animal production industries. Looking at vegan billionaires Elo Musk and Bill Gates, James Cameron create the Mars One Program is a scary truth. Reality is if we continue as we have been, we got 11 years, not 30. They just don't want us to panic. I went from meat and dairy to vegan with sometimes if access to own pole caught. fish. never been healthier and happier too. We do not have the luxury any longer to turn a blind eye. Let people eat what they want.

@@todaysrealhealth8153I love the Wynns and I have been following them since their early RV days. Please don't use the posts to push false claims. Fish eat fish... they aren't vegan. Where does MOST methane come from? Decaying vegetation, wetlands and swamps. Cows... 1/25. Look it up. High Glucose is the 2nd biggest killer on the planet. Carbs.

just seeing this today, 30 August 2020. My recommendation for your kitchen is a mandoline. Mine cost about $30 U.S. I can slice 1 mm thickness, and set up to make carrot sticks, fries, all sorts of fun stuff.

Great video you guys, nice mix of content that is a day in the life. For the Hummus I followed Alton Browns suggestion years ago about substituting natural unsweetened peanut butter for the tahini, works great. I recently switched from dried chickpeas to dried SPLIT chickpeas (Chana Dal) from the Asian or Indian food market (your availability may vary). They have the hull removed in the splitting process and makes a smoother finished hummus. Looking forward to adding the garlic to the pressure cooker, thanks.
