Thank you Radfox for this amazing install video. I did mine the hard way and removed the driveshaft from both front to rear and the exhaust system in order to drop the drive shaft. When it's time for that emissions test in, I'll have a much easier time to put it back on and off again. I noticed you had more Blue Collar muscle than me as it was a lot harder to remove the downpipe and you made it look pretty easy. You have a great lifestyle balance an attitude too!
Best most detailed downpipe install I’ve seen, gonna fit mine soon, hope I don’t screw it up,getting the car jacked up high enough is the biggest most important part for me,great video
Thanks for this, helped me get the OE one out. One word of advice for anybody who wants to install a catted downpipe that retains the mounting 'ears' on axle stands. This is virtually impossible because the flex sections on the aftermarket pipes are too stiff, and you need to rotate it 180 degrees to get the ears in but the pipe won't go in the ground no matter how much one tries ;) ...
Seriously helpful. I just got my downpipe on my doorstep today. Awesome amount of detail and I honestly laughed when I heard the few choice words during the removal. I'm sure I'll be saying some myself in a couple days!
Amazing job on the shooting this video, I have seen other similar videos but they pale in comparison to how much detail and information you provide in yours. Also, all the background information and zoomed in shots you provide are very valuable. After seeing this video I can really get a good sense for what is involved to replace a downpipe and it gives me real confidence to take on this job on my own. Keep up the great work!
How has your stage 2 setup been treating you as a daily driver? Have you had any issues with your mods or with the longevity of your oem parts? We have similar setups, and I drive mine fairly aggressively doing about 300 miles a week. I've got a 2017 limestone gray .:R with UM tune, IE intercooler, gfb DV+, CTS turbo muffler delete, AWE cat-back, APR intake. My downpipe is on order and I'll have to wait until September for it.
Your dad (I'm assuming that was your son) owns a 2016 golf r and you want to go back inside to play a game?!?!? I'd be asking my dad if I can be the one to install the downpipe...... Just busting your balls man hahaha good video and very nicely detailed!
Hey Rad did you reuse the factory downpipe gasket? I didn't realize there was one but ECS tuning has one for sale for our cars. It reminds me of a big aluminum crush washer like used to be used on the oil drain plug. Thoughts?
NICE video! Mad props for videoing every little step!!! I'm sure you would have got the job done in half the time if you didn't do that for us. We really appreciate your video skillz! I enjoy your enthusiasm working on the car and enjoying the fruits of your labor. Now you need (want) an exhaust. That will REALLY open up the sound. If like that sort of thing. I do. :)
+jen tran thanks for the props! Ya, it takes longer to do the jobs for sure but I enjoy doing it. Plus I can go back and look at things in the video if I need to verify something later. Eventually I will replace the exhaust and put some sexy titanium tips on there, but for now I have three priorities, intercooler, catch can, and stage 3. I am hoping that stage 3 gets sorted out before I go for it. Thanks for watching!
Kick ass.... Great job and really appreciate your time and attention to detail from a video stand point. FYI.... Must be cool to have a neighbor that shares your love for motor-sports... but from a 4x4 perspective. OH... shhhhhh.. with the boards under the jack. You should get some 2x6 boards. Great work.... love it.. Go for the 11's!
Awesome job good SIR!! Fingers crossed to join the R club someday soon! Just a thought with the routing of your O2 sensor, was there a reason you decided not to just run it down the driver side? I thought maybe running it across the support bracket would allow chafing from the vibrations of the exhaust pipe? Again great video nice to see that this job is DIY at home!
+Wasaki Thanks! I have no check engine light. The downpipe has a catalytic converter on it so it should pass a sniffer and OBD2 tests. If your state does not allow aftermarket catalytic converters it may not pass.
I'm a little bit concerned about the fact that you didn't replaced and torqued the driveshaft bolts. Have you replaced the turbo flange gasket as well?
I really love your enthusiasm. I got the 2016 and am super happy. I don't plan any mods, but it is fun watching yours. I have tinted the rear windows and added a clear bra below the hatch. I will put my Thule bike rack back on shortly. Maybe I will do the center console mod!
Thanks! Smart, that clear bra gives some great peace of mind! My sons football gear scratched that area on my GTI within the first month of buying the car. Come on, you have to at least mod your center console! You can do it! :-)
Good effort man that was really well done with the camera and editing, etc. What is the size of the stock downpipe as it didn't look small compared to the mk6 R.
nice video,i like so much how its sounds now,and i think it will sound even better with a new back exaust.i like alot your videos...ty for shering with us
When you were running Stage 1 map with your downpipe, did you throw a check engine light? I did after about 75 miles. Going to have the installer check the code but just askin'.
What tune did you go with? I am not sure, I only drove the car over the weekend on stage 1 before going to stage 2 with the downpipe and I did not get a CEL from the O2. On my GTI I believe that I did trigger the O2 CEL when I was on stage 1 with the downpipe but that it took several days for it to trigger. You could try an O2 sensor extendor some say it has helped them.
Damn I should have waited until after I install the downpipe to install my new engine/trans mounts. I see you used the slop in the OEM mounts to give yourself clearance to remove the driveshaft
Are you expecting to see a problem? Does yours wobble? I actually didn't look but I could open it up and shoot a video, it would be good to know. I took a look at my GTI several times and what bothered me was the watergate would wobble. I talked to APR and the said they all wobble even brand new ones in their shop.
+Rad Fox I wasn't expecting to see a problem but with all the ihi turbo issues I'll be curious to check mine. I do have the 722H thankfully so I should be ok.
Awesome video!! gonna use your guidance to help me remove my "phucker" the weekend. You think dropping the subframe will help. Sound like I'm gonna have a struggle since its a right hand drive model and the steering coulomb gets in the way.
DAMN Rad! You got that car up high as hell! I'm still watching but do you think it needs to be that high? I'm going to buy an EBAY GTI downpipe and just use it for the tubing. I'm going to put a cat in the stock location and add a nicer flex pipe. I'll also make it a 2 piece with a v band.
LOL! It could probably be lower but I'm a big guy and I want lots of room. I was almost gonna lift of the back too but I was curious to see if it could be done with just the front lifted. Hey what you are thinking of doing by making your own downpipe sounds cool. When I was looking at all the other downpipe I thought it sucks that they don't vband or clamp the cat in. These cats go bad and some may want to slip a straight pipe in for racing. If you are planning to go stage 3 is it worth it to make your own? Do you have a welder? I have a Lincoln but it needs the gas kit for mig. I'm sure I could have bought the kit many times with all the welded stuff I bought instead of making myself.
+Rad Fox I do have a welder but I'm also a welder/fitter by trade so I plan on mocking it up at home and taking it to work or my buddies house to finish welding it with TIG setup. I'll probably back purge it just for the hell of it since it will have a lot of different pieces welded together. Most likely heat wrap it with that heat shield fabric stuff to keep the temps down. I'd like to get a turbo blanket as well but no one makes one yet. As far as the Cat goes in my research I've found that the closer it is to the turbo the better it works. Also it beings so close to the turbo helps with the way the first o2 sensor reads the air/fuel or something like that. Not sure if the second part is true but with the DP I'm starting with it will be easier to put it in the stock location anyways. I'm going to get a mil. spec 100 cell cat. Seems to be the best.
Sweet, sounds like a lot of fun! I think your DP plans are solid. You, know the O2 extension wire that i clipped on the firewall, I went and checked it today and it was still holding but the sheathing was very stiff now after hot rodding around. I guess this backs up the point that it gets really hot in there. A blanket and wrap would really help to keep the temps down. Hey you know you can buy that heat blanket material right? I bought some years ago from a local hot rod shop for my Talon turbo. Use some steel rivets and custom make that sucker. From my understanding,I agree, the cat works its best closer to the turbo because it will heat faster and maintain a higher temperature there. This is better for the O2 readings. However, my theory was that with the cat being further away it would give the turbo less back pressure right when it is just trying to spool. I could be wrong with my theory, but I don't think anyone can say exactly what is happening without running some 3D fluid models on each of our exact setups and even then the simulation is only as good as the models inputs. The only thing we can go by is dyno figures, 1/4 mile times, 0-60 times, and the seat of our pants and even those can be misleading when it comes to very slight performance changes. Oh and by the way I am going to put up another dynolicous video. It says I just ran a 12.12 @113MPH with a 4.04 0-60MPH with 338 hp. I know this has got to be off but the car is noticeably faster now with just the downpipe. It is crazy that a downpipe can make this much of a difference but I am guessing that every little bit of back pressure and resistance is critical up here at 5000 ft.
+Rad Fox I agree. Most of the reason why I want to put it there is because since I am buying a gti downpipe I have to cut it up anyways in that section to clear the driveshaft. The fact that most of the bigger reputable exhaust makers are putting the cat in stock location is just a bonus for me. I started a thread on golfmk7 asking about the cat placement. That's where I was told about the air/fuel mixing or whatever so maybe check that out to see if it makes sense and if you agree. When are you going stage 2?😀
I'm going to go check that thread out. I'll call tomorrow to see if I can get an appointment for the new Stage 2 flash with more HP and for the new TCU tune! wow thxx for the video !! i going to do it my self to now and not bring it to the garage they only f... ur car up THXX ps let us know if the engine light came on and how to fix that horrible light hihi
+xReptarMuffin ya, check out my other drag video. I have the DSG tune with extra clamping force as well. I have went back to the track with the stage 2 flash and I ran a 12.56@107 best ET. Check out the cars I beat and listen to the announcer, the people in the stands, and the Camaro that I beat. The Corvette race is pretty cool too! Here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/Awuq_WerhTM/v-deo.html
I had stage 1 APR on my 09 GTI.... then this rabid fire hydrant came outta nowhere and.... well not I have a stock 2011. I wish I could afford to upgrade my '11 but I just can't afford the labor on stage 2. Stage 1 was fun, but I am saving for stage 2.
+futball24 I installed the downpipe on a Friday and then had to wait for the tune appointment till Tuesday. I had several occasions where I drove the car hard and the car was ridiculously fast for up at this elevation. My dynolicious software said I dropped from a 12.7 to a 12.1 with just the downpipe. Now that I have the stage two tune my dynolicious software says I am running a best of 12.48 and I have ran a best of 12.56 at the strip. I contacted APR asking about why the car was so fast and they said do not keep driving the car hard until you can get the stage 2 tune because the car will run lean and damage the engine. I was lucky but if you are down at sea level and you do the same thing, you will probably burn your valves and melt your pistons so don't do it! I suffered no major damage. I have no loss in performance and I have since done a compression check and checked my plugs mulitple times and all is good!
+Rad Fox thank goodness for the altitude. I have an mk6 Golf R and always wanted a down pipe to free up the torque, but I'm hesitant to go stage 2 as its my daily. Keep up the videos. We love them!
+zues2013 I haven't had any bad experiences with USP. I will say that USP as a company was very helpful when I called them and asked them to please get the downpipe out the door the day I ordered. There are other fancy downpipes out there, but this one was at a great price and I knew it would work fine. I am going to go stage 3 so this downpipe is just temporary while I do the other upgrades. Regarding USP, was your bad experience related to quality, service, or both?
+Rad Fox service. They do not have their products labeled as being on back ordered on their sight. Purchased a lip and difusser kit from them. The estimated ship date came and went contacted them about it took them nearly a day and a half to get back to a simple email with a very vague answer only to tell me it's on back order. Needless to say I canceled my order and will not do business with them again. Glad to see your experience was much better.
I apologize for the inconvenience that it may have placed on you, we currently have live stock status on the website. We ran into a small number of problems based around that and decided to add it to the website, but as for service...I hope you don't judge us on one of our products being on back-order. We have been around for quite sometime and pride ourselves on being there for enthusiasts like yourself. If you ever have a problem again, please don't hesitate to reach out to us via phone 888-755-7772, as sometimes our email response time is more then a day. We aren't a large company and are just a group of enthusiasts with the same passion as you guys. As much as we would like to be a large big box retailer with amazon-like shipping logistics, we enjoy the close knit feel of being apart of customers builds like this one.
Showing us how to jack up these cars was as valuable as showing the install!
Thank you Radfox for this amazing install video. I did mine the hard way and removed the driveshaft from both front to rear and the exhaust system in order to drop the drive shaft. Thanks for the complement and thanks for the great service!
Best most detailed downpipe install I’ve seen, gonna fit mine soon, hope I don’t screw it up,getting the car jacked up high enough is the biggest most important part for me,great video
i did it on my self bro in 2.5h, this video is a 11/10. (i am not even a mechanic)
Thanks !

I just saw your post. Thanks for the props!
Ya my neighbor is all in on the 4x4 scene.
I think I need a higher lift jack. Lol!
Just did the downpipe install on my 2016 S3 and this video helped immensely! Thank you so much!
the best guide! nice
Great video! Thank you. I am using this as I do mine now!
I came here to see how you jacked up the car lol where did you get the barbell attachment?
Awesome job good SIR!! Fingers crossed to join the R club someday soon! Just a thought with the routing of your O2 sensor, was there a reason you decided not to just run it down the driver side? I thought maybe running it across the support bracket would allow chafing from the vibrations of the exhaust pipe? Again great video nice to see that this job is DIY at home!
Thanks for such an informative video with actual footage of removal and installation! Subbed!!! =)
At 36:05 when you say not to over tighten those bolts.. any idea how many ft lbs or nm to use (roughly)?
Great video, and well detailed. this OEM downpipe is a pain to removed.
do you have any cell with this USP 3", what do you plan for state inspection?
+Wasaki Thanks! I have no check engine light. The downpipe has a catalytic converter on it so it should pass a sniffer and OBD2 tests. If your state does not allow aftermarket catalytic converters it may not pass.
Thanks to you it went totally perfect thanks for the great vids bro you have a fan for life!!!
Thanks for the support!
Ya man. This is how we do it !!
I'm a little bit concerned about the fact that you didn't replaced and torqued the driveshaft bolts.
Have you replaced the turbo flange gasket as well?
did my Mk6 this way. What a bastard of a job. the Mk7 series doesnt look any easier with that huge cat on the end of it!
I did my own downpipe on my 2.0 Polo GTI and I have to agree it is an absolute shit job to DIY, getting the original cat out was pure hell!
Great video! how long did the install take? I thought I heard you say in video but cant find that part now.
Rad Fox I just did the center console, so easy. Thank you for calling out the 5/32 Allen!
+Don Thorvund Awesome!!!! Congrats!!! Watch out or you might catch the modding bug!!
Must not watch your Stage 2 or 3 mods. Must keep stock. (If I keep saying it, it might work). Happy Holiday!
Ok. Just maybe the Pro Clip. That doesn't really count, right?
Good effort man that was really well done with the camera and editing, etc. What is the size of the stock downpipe as it didn't look small compared to the mk6 R.
Thanks! The stock pipe is 2.5"
that golf r is nice but your neighbors yota is bad ass!
nice video,i like so much how its sounds now,and i think it will sound even better with a new back exaust.i like alot your videos...ty for shering with us
Thank you! It sounds great!
Another great video, keep up the good work. /thumbup

+jim jones I hope!!!!
Great video, I’m doing my down pipe in 2 weeks, where are you located?
Damn I should have waited until after I install the downpipe to install my new engine/trans mounts. I see you used the slop in the OEM mounts to give yourself clearance to remove the driveshaft
I skipped to the sound clip, did you have the res?
Great videos man! Keep it up
+Paul Bishop thank you sir! :-)
I was hoping you'd look at the exhaust side of the turbo with the pipe off. Check the shaft
Are you expecting to see a problem? Does yours wobble? I actually didn't look but I could open it up and shoot a video, it would be good to know. +Rad Fox I wasn't expecting to see a problem but with all the ihi turbo issues I'll be curious to check mine. I do have the 722H thankfully so I should be ok.
Great video as usual 👍
Thanks!
When is the next video coming ?
Sooooooo good! 🔥
Are you in michigan by chance and want to do another one lol
Awesome video!! gonna use your guidance to help me remove my "phucker" the weekend. You think dropping the subframe will help. Sound like I'm gonna have a struggle since its a right hand drive model and the steering coulomb gets in the way.
DAMN Rad! You got that car up high as hell! I'm still watching but do you think it needs to be that high? I'm going to buy an EBAY GTI downpipe and just use it for the tubing. I'm going to put a cat in the stock location and add a nicer flex pipe. I'll also make it a 2 piece with a v band.

I'm going to go check that thread out.
I'll call tomorrow to see if I can get an appointment for the new Stage 2 flash with more HP and for the new TCU tune!
I can't believe that just adding the downpipe gives this car so much more power!
Dude, hurry up and build that downpipe and go get some new numbers! Your gonna be in the 11's!
Crazy fox! 😀👍
What did the fox say?
Great video. Definitely helped me decide to not to this myself :-). Props
Thanks!
rattling may be due to not breaking in the cat?
I know this is an old video but can anyone share their experiences on how having a Decat downpipe affected their VW Warranty & Maintenance Plan?
Can't wait to trade my gti for a mk7 r
Wassup bro great video, I'm using your video as a guide to put in my HPA down pipe, pray for me lol
Did you do it? How did it go?
nice vid, however the bolts on the lower dog bone should be replaced with new bolts as they are one time use stretch bolts.
Can you tell me the size of the triple square bit please
Where did you get the barbell adapter?
wow thxx for the video !! i going to do it my self to now and not bring it to the garage they only f... ur car up THXX ps let us know if the engine light came on and how to fix that horrible light hihi
Have you gone stage 2 yet? I know some people when they go stage 2 they need a dsg tune to launch.
+xReptarMuffin ya, check out my other drag video. I have the DSG tune with extra clamping force as well. I have went back to the track with the stage 2 flash and I ran a 12.56@107 best ET. Would the install be similar on a mk6 r?

+SlugDropsonheads Watch out for the rabid hydrants! ;-) Keep saving, because it's worth it!
why you decided to choose catted dp instead of catless?
I prefer to keep the car catted. Keeps it legal and keeps the smells down.
Did you just install the down pipe with no tune?
+futball24 I installed the downpipe on a Friday and then had to wait for the tune appointment till Tuesday. I had several occasions where I drove the car hard and the car was ridiculously fast for up at this elevation. My dynolicious software said I dropped from a 12.7 to a 12.1 with just the downpipe.
Thanks for the props! Are you already stage 1?
+Rad Fox Totally stock.
Why don't you just start with Stage 1 then? Its a nice jump and you don't have to worry about the downpipe.
Badass!
+Will Stargate Hell Ya!
Surprised you went with usp all my experiences with them have been horrible
+zues2013 I haven't had any bad experiences with USP. I will say that USP as a company was very helpful when I called them and asked them to please get the downpipe out the door the day I ordered.
There are other fancy downpipes out there, but this one was at a great price and I knew it would work fine. I am going to go stage 3 so this downpipe is just temporary while I do the other upgrades.
Regarding USP, was your bad experience related to quality, service, or both?
+zues2013 What bad experiences have you had?
