You did an outstanding job at removing the stock DP without messing with the heat shield above the FR CV axle like other folks and shops have done. You also showed (or had) the least amount of issue removing the stock bulky DP! Very well done. But you teased us by omitting a post-install sound clip. :-) Very helpful vid for a first timer working on this platform. Thank you!
Thanks Rad Fox!!! I have a 16 GTI with PP and I was having a hell of a time figuring out how to get the damn nut off behind the O2 sensor. Once I removed it I was able to get my 13mm deep well socket, wobble, extensions (3 of them as I didn't have a really long one) and 12V impact driver in the exhaust tunnel and was able to remove the nut! After that I was able to maneuver the stock DP out in less than 2 minutes! Thanks for the video!!!
Still stock tune for now. I went the Unitronic route and have a their DP, CAI and Intercooler. I will go UNI Stage 2 eventually as well as upgrade the clutch. For now I am extremely pleased with the way it has turned out. I also have a Magnaflow CBE (which I hope to swap out with the UNI version as soon as I can pick up a good used one) and VWR lowering springs. This car is AMAZING!!!
awesome vid, helped a lot. I ended up leaving the sensor in the stock DP and taking it out when I pulled the DP out and dropping the new DP from the top. for some reason it was easier for me, nonetheless the video helped a lot, thank you!
Great video! Best so far! Getting my apr down pipe installed next month and wondering can I keep my factory cat back with out any modifications ? Also would the tune cause any issues with the factory cat back?
I never did get the engine light with the correct tune. I did get the check O2 error when I was on the stock tune with the aftermarket downpipe. I think I did get it with the Stage 1 tune as well. But with the stage 2 tune I did not get the check engine light.
Hey,can someone help me to understand the difference btw changing the down pipe verse found with a full catback exhaust system?Do They both give similar gains?
A high flow aftermarket downpipe is an absolute necessity to unlock the power of this car and does not need the catback portion replaced. You only need the aftermarket downpipe. The stock catback portion of the exhaust is plenty adequate. The aftermarket catback systems do not offer any significant improvement in performance especially when you consider how much they cost. The only reason to replace the stock catback is for looks and to change the sound of the exhaust note.
If you have a DSG, do you need to upgrade the stock clutch after installing a CBE, downpipe and doing a tune or is that only for those with a manual transmission? Thanks for making these videos Rad Fox.. very helpful!
Good vid. Doesn't look too bad. Certainly not as bad as some of the other cars I've put exhausts on. Did you discover any rattles or noises or anything like that after the install? Also, with the cat, was there any extra drone or unwanted resonance from the exhaust that you could hear/feel in the car? Lastly, stock tune? Curious if it will throw a CEL on the stock tune.
Hey FastRedPonyCar. There are absolutely no rattles. The down pipe will trigger a CEL on the stock tune. APR Stage 2 will not trigger the CEL as the down pipe is required for stage 2. APR can supply a stage 1 or possibly a stock tune that will not throw the CEL but you would need to talk to them directly. The exhaust noise is very subjective. I would say there is no drone, the exhaust is more throaty and I am extremely happy with the sound. Do you have a GTI?
+Rad Fox I have one of the '16 R's but I'm assuming that it's more or less the same thing in terms of the install. I read on vortex that guys were not getting CEL's using this thing between the sensor and the cat. www.42draftdesigns.com/O2-Sensor-Spacer_p_306.html
Hey Im just got a 16 gti pp and I was wondering is the DP a mod that requires a tune. if not what kind of gains do you notice with just the DP but no tune.
There are gains to be had with just the downpipe on the stock tune. The car will breath a lot better wiht the downpipe. Most stage 1 tunes require you to keep your stock downpipe. If you run a stage 1 tune with a aftermarket performance downpipe the car may run lean and make a lot of extra heat and possibly damage the engine and catalytic converter. You really need to run stage 2 with the downpipe to be safe and get all of the power. If you don't want to do the downpipe, then just get a Stage 1 flash and be done with it. The Stage 1 flash is a HUGE improvement over stock power levels and you really don't need to do anything else to the car. At some point you could add a bigger or additional intercooler and a higher flow cold air intake but those are not necessary unless you are seeing performance hits from heat soak.
I agree there are gains to be made just by replacing the DP. I haven't dynoed my car yet but it sure feels like it pulls harder! Plus it adds a much more aggressive exhaust note!
+Spencer Wren warranty is really tricky. The best answer I can give you is that it is possible that it might cause you warranty problems on the turbo and or engine. It really depends on your relation with your dealer and if a VW inspector is required to approve the claim. If an inspector has to come out they have been know to reject claims if they see any racing or high-performance mods on the car.
Omfg i just did mine and fuck this is wayyy harder then the mk5 i had..plis pitting in back in for dealer f that im going to exhaust shop..those 2 bolts that hold downpipe to block were easier from top but just getting it oit was hard as hell.
Love when i see receipt comments when I come looking for the same thing. I'll guess they charge 2hrs labor for this. Probably $250-300 if I had to guess (that's at an authorized shop)

You are welcome! Are you still stock tune? Stage 1 or Stage 2?
Still stock tune for now. I went the Unitronic route and have a their DP, CAI and Intercooler. I will go UNI Stage 2 eventually as well as upgrade the clutch. For now I am extremely pleased with the way it has turned out.

This is by far the best Mark7 GTI DP install video! I would not have been able to complete this project without your help. Thank you very much
Thank you very much for this video. Hardest part was just rotating the darn stock unit out but once that was done the rest was easy!
awesome vid, helped a lot. I ended up leaving the sensor in the stock DP and taking it out when I pulled the DP out and dropping the new DP from the top. for some reason it was easier for me, nonetheless the video helped a lot, thank you!
No O2 spacer?

did you get a engine light
Any chance of getting it out without having to unbolt the axel if I saw it in two or three pieces?
How long of an extension did you have to take those 2 bolts?
did you get a engine light after about 100 miles or so
Do you smell fumes when you’re at a stand still with this dp? Because I do

Can I get the link for that kit??
No sound clip of the new DP?
Your right I should have recorded it. Is that your R in your videos?
Where did you place the jack stands? Are they under the pinch welds on the side?
Yep!
If you have a DSG, do you need to upgrade the stock clutch after installing a CBE, downpipe and doing a tune or is that only for those with a manual transmission? Thanks for making these videos Rad Fox.. very helpful!
You don't have to, but stock clutch will not hold.

what tools did u use for the install?
One hand DP replacement :)
I need three arms!!

sweet video. i think its time to buy a go pro. so you can use both hands.
Will this void warranty?

How many miles were on this car when you installed this downpipe?
This video was not the first time this downpipe was installed on the car. The first time it was installed was I believe around 1200 miles.
Thanks, I was just curious on the mileage I'm getting ready to do an APR downpipe on a 2015 Audi S3!
no problem. Good luck!
+Rad Fox Thanks BTW very good install video!

good Job!!!
Anyone price what an APR dealer would charge to install it? If it's only a couple of hundred that might be money well spent.

did you get a engine light after about 100 miles
You will get the check engine O2 reading warning if you are running stock or stage 1 APR flash. Flash to stage 2 and it will go away.
