  • The mixed reviews of Yooka-Laylee, a game that functions exactly as it was intended to minus a couple technical errors, led me to believe that its criticism was really against the Collectathon genre for being outdated in the eyes of the modern gaming audience.
In this video, I break down the genre into its most basic components in order to understand how it works, why it works that way, and ultimately, how it can be changed so as to fix this problem without completely dismissing the genre.
    Update:
Man, I'm out of the loop. I didn't realize UA-cam got rid of their Annotations. It's not quite how I wanted to have it set up, but I threw in cards at the end for each of these first 3 videos in order to provide links to the other 2.

This is one of the best breakdowns of what makes 3D platformers I have ever seen. I can’t believe how little people have seen this video. Amazing video nonetheless.

Really enjoyed this, and glad to see you back on UA-cam :D It's always been nice listening to your thoughts because I at least think I have a pretty similar analytical mindset, so it's cool to see there'll be a channel dedicated to it. I think at times it sounded a bit too much like you were reading an essay, but overall really enjoyed the video, everything from the actual argument you made to the subtly very well synced gameplay footage. Looking forward to more! :D

That 2004 reference there. That's certain to fly over some people's heads.

Very cohesive thought process, it was interesting looking at 3d platformers in such a way. Hard to analyze that while just playing them.

So, that's Jak and Daxter 2 right? The one you reference near the end?

Great video, the only thing I can is turn the tunes up my man. It's too bad Yooka Laylee took such a hit over the crowdfunding. Jak and Daxter is definitely sick, I always wonder if it started as a crash game turned non linear

Nintendo itself has produced so few non-Mario 3D platformers over the years

Im very late to comment but just found out about this video right now
You only talked about your ideas to modernize Collectathons, not all 3D Platformers are Collectathons you know and an A to B progression doesn't necessarily mean misuse of the 3D space, i recommend checking out the game Sonic Robo Blast 2 to see what i mean

Did we watch the same video? He said “most 3D/2D platformers”

A level being linear doesn't make it built like a 2d platformer. Plenty of 2d games have multiple paths through the levels and plenty of 3d games have linear levels. I don't really see how a level being a linear path makes it not a 3d game. Classic sonic games had multiple paths through levels. Does that mean that the early sonic games were 3d games disguised as 2d ones?

The point is that when a 3D level is linear, it's not utilizing the additional dimension as the whole course and its obstacles could be projected onto a flat 2D plane and accomplish the same thing. Having a couple of detours doesn't change that, regardless of whether it's 2D or 3D.

Scatterbrained I think I just didn't fully understand what you meant by that. I do think there's more merit to be find in 3d platform design than just having nonlinear level design, but you're right that it can be accomplished in a different way in a 3d game than a 2d game.

Well Yooka wasn't a bad game but it wasn't good either. It missed a lot of what made those old platformers great. It was a disappointing game because of the resources it had like money, time, talent artists, designers, sound team etc. There was expectations tied to it. Personally I beat all of it excpet for one Rex mini game (the one representing the helicopter game where you can't touch the floor or ceiling) and the final boss. I gave up on the final boss because it took too long to aim the missles back at him in one flight. and it takes too long to take flight. so i kept losing cuz i would get hit as i was taking off or right after. it was dumb. the truck transform was way too slipper, the ball form was hard to handle for being a main means of movement. it wasn't a difficult game because of the challanges but because i was fighting my own character while playing.
now it also has up sides. my favorite level was the first world but after that, the levels seem to take short cuts. i liked the bosses and that i had to find them but i wished they made more sense and were more fun to fight especially the kartos one. The art in general is fantastic. i love the characters except the duck and final boss, the music for the most part and the whole idea of it.
I just think the execution and portrayal of their ideas were off. Like going bubble form in the hot tub. That is clever but i hadn't used the bubble form enough yet to think of that. nor was i thinking of bad jokes when the hot tub said whatever he said. we were in a level based on heating up a furnace when the rest of the level was cold. I thought I had to heat up the hot tub like you do in real life to make the bubbles. so i was looking for a fire of some kind.
Anyways, Yooka had its ups and downs but it failed because it had a titan of a team behind it. I bet if it was made by a couple guys in their basement it would of gotten praise. Now I know Yooka is bad compared to the old games because A Hat In Time also came out and was a huge success. The team was smaller and had less resources. And that game didn't have too much in it, it just had new ideas and heart. So platformers, collectathons, whatever aren't bad and won't go away and never left. Games in general have gone down in quality these days because the heart is gone. Same with movies. This is the nostalgia trip era we are in and i hope it ends soon. Just need to have heart and the game will get its recognition eventually.
