Thanks Toby! Glad to hear your thoughts on this camera. There seems to be a huge contention amongst camera shooters that the AF is the #1 reason why they won't be bothering to even check out the camera. Thanks to reviews like yours and others, you showcase MORE than just the AF ability or its shortcomings... thanks for this.
6:00 I assume rack focus is non-AF-C, correct? Also, once you set it up, it will just go to a pre-set position without attempting to confirm focus (in other words, without pulsating), correct?
For some reason on my GH four when I'm shooting video whether it's 1080 P 60 frames per second or even 4K at 30 frames per second I find my GH 4 splits my video files is that something that I have to deal with with the GH 5
The Christmas room guy (I don´t have his youtube name) posted good info about the autofocus feature of the GH5. He consulted some Panasonic guys. The main info was: Autofocus works only reliable, when you nail focus on the talking head, before pushing the record button. Also 60p seems to work better than 30p.
Good review =) I've been using the LX100 for a few months now and its been good. One day when I have a little more money I might get a GH5. Love seeing all your travels on Instagram. Keep it up!
Please answer me this question I just purchased the gh5 just came in today and I notice some noise that made me feel like something is loose in the camera when I shake it when it off and doesn't make the noise that much when it's on. Is this something I should be worried about? I recorded video and shook it and the footage was fine but idk
Thanks for putting this video together. Looking forward to a more indepth review. I also shoot with my GH4 and have been seriously considering splurging and getting the GH5 but was a little concerned with how bad the Autofocus is in some reviews. I often use it in a run and gun Vlog style and I'd hate to get home and only find out once watching it on my computer that the it was out of focus or hunting around non stop when clearly there was someone (me or someone else) cleary front and center in the frame. Hopefully Panasonic will come out with a firmware update that will improve this feature. Thanks again. New SUB too.
Does anyone notice any tiny smudges or blotches on their sensory (GH5)? I have a tiny dot (?) on the lower half yet nothing shows up on video or photos...
Try taking a photo of a blue sky or plain white wall at a very high aperture, f/22 - it will probably show up then. And watch ua-cam.com/video/M5MrXEjWmCA/v-deo.html
Strange- Mine does not seem to have any smudges or blotches. If it doesn't show up in video I wouldn't worry about it but if you have a local camera store you trust you might want to take it to them for a look.
Thanks, Rous. I am not conversant with any of those apps. Does Sony also have an app like that (for a6500, for example)? Is it comparable with Panasonic, or more like the others?
Yep - all correct. An app and wifi isn't really a replacement for a flipout screen, wifi always take a minute to setup but it certainly is helpful in some situations.
So for those of us still using Canon do you recommend getting the metabones and keeping the canon glass or buying a kit lens. For me this GH5 would be a stepping stone to a more robust cinema camera like at C300 2 or maybe the C200 once the dust settles. It seems you shoot professionally so I can assume you would recommend the GH5 over the G85 for video.. Are the files the same. I do not want to transcode my life away just to shoot 4K
The files are the same - I can edit the 8 bit files easily on my imac with FCPX. The major advantage of the kit lens is it's small size. AF is a little better, a llittle smoother with native lenses too.
Thanks for acknowledging. Very professional. Not everyone would admit they are wrong so easily. One question. Can you slow down the 96fps to 30fps and not have the video look odd? Have a great day. Peace.
I get my GH5 tomorrow. The autofocus isn´t a dealbreaker for me because I´m focussing almost all the time manual and btw I also saw some videos where the autofocus worked much better. And yeah, all that stuff for 2K is fkn amazing!
Preordered it. I was happy with the auto focus. For what I use it for the AF works well enough. I will be flying the camera on a gimbal tomorrow using the auto focus. I'm hoping it will work with the apps touch to focus
Great video! Auto Focus is not a deal breaker. Ppl did it without auto focus back then and the other features you get are great for the price. Its not like the GH5 has completely no auto focus, it has a good enough AF. Photos and Video in this camera are great.
I would like to see if the AF improves using a External recorder. Also the difference (gh4 vs gh5) when grading V log L from the External recorder! Seems like Atomos has a new Ninja inferno to go with this camera.
I'am thinking about an upgrade from the 70D to the GH5. This would be nice in terms of video features, but I'm not convinced of it's stills capability, because i can't find reviews which focus a little bit more on this topic. My fallback option is to keep the 70D and buy a GH4 for video work. I can't imagine I'am the only one who want to take great stills and produce some decent video.. Any thoughts or tips?
I've come from a 70D to a GH5. The stills are great, and lots of useful features too. Its a shame about autofocus on the GH5, the 70D has better AF, but everything else is better on the GH5 IMO.
I agree with Lord below. I love, LOVE the features packed into the GH4 and GH5 and it blows away the 70D in all regards except for continuous tracking AF.
So Toby, when you now bought a GH 5 for your video and whatever stills you pass worth to frame, does that leave out the EM1.2 as bad choice for shooting video then? I just got myself a EM1.2 as a replacement for my other Oly cams and would be interested in trying out video too. So my question is, does the two cams does so much apart on the video side that you would suggest to have them both? I have been using the Oly u43 cams since I started serious photography and just per automatic upgrade when I see there's something to get. Being so far a stills shooter only, your wouldn't vote the GH5 better for that than the EM1.2?
Hi Gerner, sorry I missed a few of these comments. I would take the EM1.2 for primarily stills over the GH5. And the EM1.2 does video well enough that I'd be pretty happy with it. The GH5 is better for video but not that much that you need both. Hope that helps.
Great review! Im really thinking about getting the GH5 but also am thinking about the Sony A7S. Your thoughts? Or maybe you could do a review...I really want to see the difference in low lighting situations between the two and how their ISO compares.
i have been needing an upgrade and was looking at a gh5. would you recommend a gh4 if I'm making the switch from old canon dslrs or just go to gh5? im thinking that a gh5 and a gh4 as backup sounds like a good plan. but, maybe start with a gh4 first? maybe you think a gh5 clean start is a better idea? any suggestions on lenses would help. i have a few vintage nikkors i use now. thanks!
I've been rocking the GH4 for over a year now and really like it, the thing that makes me want to upgrade is the 4K at 60 fps... but man that's really just a luxury, and certainly not a necessity. GH4 rocks, pick it up first and then demote it to your secondary camera if you have the $ and build up to a point where you NEED the added features of the GH5. Cheers!
Great review champ. Was hoping they fixed the auto focus issues and made it more competitive in that arena. Still doing research but that may be a deal breaker for me to upgrade from my current GH4 and 70d vlogging camera setup. With a solid auto focus added to the GH5 I would probably buy two and go completely Panasonic. So close to my dream camera, so stinking close.
It is 2017 and Canon and Sony are doing pretty well with AF, so when you compare the GH5 to Canon and Sony I think that's where most people are scratching their heads in disbelief that the GH5 AF is not better. That's why Max's videos stirred up many comments because many are shocked that the GH5 would do this in 2017.
Hi Toby, Great. timely video. I'm in the market for a new camera (for stills only). If not interested in video, would there be any reason to consider this camera?
After spending a week in Yosemite I am really impressed with the stills capabilities of this camera BUT for $2,000 there are better options for still photography - Sony A7II, Sony a6300, Olympus OMD EM1 II all come to mind.
as much as I'd like the GH5 I'll be sticking with my G85 for the next 12 months at least. It's definitely on my 'to buy' list but just not yet :) Great review
Nice video. I was in the same place as you. That is, I have GH4 I bought 7 months ago and now the newer model is out. I now have both the GH4 and the GH5. I upgraded for the higher quality stills capability with the GH5, the GH4 was just ok. Wanted a single camera that could do it all: great video AND solid stills performance. That's what pushed me over the edge to buy the GH5. One camera that does it all for me.
Both the GH4 and GH5 are on my camera list of purchases. I am currently useing the Nikon D5500 because off the great battery life. I am hoping both the GH4 and GH5 have more than decent battery life. Also wanting to purchase the Nikon D750
I never noticed the battery on my 5100 or 5500 lasting that long. I had about 4 spare batteries for each camera. The Nikon El-15 batteries last much longer. I was able to film about 3 x as long with D610 and D7100. The G7,G85 use the same battery. It lasts about the same as the D5500. The battery on the gh5 seems to give me about 3 hours or so of record time. But I've only charged to 2x now.
Knock the wood or may be just Touch wood ? 😀 Nice Video Review. I think one can hold on to the GH4 as it is still a nice camera unless you are taking more stills. The GH5 can be a good allrounder. Wish the 80D supported log profile and a better Mbps Video Codec.
I have had Panasonic gx7 less than 6months and the shutter dial is not working properly. Also Panasonics seem to underexpose everything. I wouldn't get Panasonic again.
Hey, thank you for the video ! The real question to since i don't know if I should buy a GH4 or a GH5 is : is the GH5 worth the extra 1000$ ? I'm a young actor/director, and this will be my first camera, but I'm lost. 1000$ seems like a huge difference to me I saved some money, i could do a lot with the extra 1000$, but I don't want to regret my choice !!! Any help PLEASE ??????
I just watched a couple of your reviews. It would be nice if you could be a bit more opinionated and stated your choice(s) is and the reason(s) for it. Not all equipment choices are based on usage scenarios and it would be nice to hear "I do/don't like it because..." Thanks for your great content.
ChemicalX Films I use over 120fps. Shoot in 60fps, then more than half the frames. It's not the same, so you're still correct, but every professional I know does this as the bit rate is higher.
will be getting it - more of a powerhouse - just like with the Fuji Xt-2 - one needs to learn how to tweak tracking autofocus - I suspect Panasonic will also release firmware update - and eventully I think they will employ dual phase and contrast like Sony and Fuji for example - DFD is good but no match for phase in moving subjects -
yes autofocus is a deal breaker to me.. i use gimbal in a professional use (weddings)... i wish GH5 had phase detection system.. then i would buy it.... i am going to continue with my Canon 80D .. it has no 4K, but really who needs it nowadays
I uses a gimbal at weddings too. I've been using a follow focus. I was hoping this AF system worked well for that. Saves a lot of time. But I will use the follow focus if i have to. 4K 60p, and with the atomos 10 bit too
Jorge good for you my friend, .. but i am looking for a cinematic kind of a picture while following a wedding couple... i want to have a decent bokeh + people in focus while i am walking... its imposible to control your focus manualy while you are on gimbal.... so this is why i want a camera with a good AUTOFOCUS system like a canon 80D
Steve, tell me please WHO the hell needs 4K right now???? did any of your clints told you or asked you "hey, if you don't do a 4k footage - i don't need your services" ??? come on, be honest, no one YET needs a 4k... people watching videos (movies) on a FullHD TV not 4K .... at least 90% do... and regarding a 10bit - there are a lot of review videos showing that there is NO noticable difference between 8bit and 10bit for a human eye... are you really willing to spend all your money on Hard Drives that you are going to buy????? 4k - maybe after 4-5 years, but not now...
Yes, but they will, and when they do, you will be behind the curve with your other gear. No 4k monitor? Hard drives too small for 4k? Does your computer have the CPU to process 4k? Been around long enough to say I've seen this all before ... Remember when HD came into style? HD? who needs HD? ... just sayin'. Get ready for 4k, 6k ... don't stop thinking you OR your gear are good enough ... there is always one of your competitors who is and will get the business because you aren't.
I have not been bothered by this at all - 3 months of using this camera and I love it. Though if I wanted AF to track me or a subject walking I would be frustrated - I just don't shoot that way.

Thank you for these test photos. Tell me why JPG pictures from GH4 are more sharp? Is this your mistake in focusing or GH5 always not sharp....
My gh4 touch screen just stopped responding too.
Does that mean I have to order the 5 as well!?
Yes, and if both spend a night together in a cosy box, the GH4 will restart working the next morning.
Thanks Toby! Glad to hear your thoughts on this camera. Correct on both accounts.
Thanks.

The GH5 does not split files like the GH4 did.
PhotoRec TV is it a strain on your Mac or PC to edit 4K video at 60 frames per second?
Make Proxy files for editing and it works just fine. Without those it is a struggle.
PhotoRec TV do you use a solid-state drive for those type of files
No- just fast drives.

How does the image quality fair agains the C300 mark 2 and the RED Cameras?
Are there any cameras that do 4K 10 bit at 60fps? Looking for one to buy for black friday sales.
Can an iPad (or other similar tablet) over WiFi be used instead of the flipout screen and have all the same functions?
Thanks, Rous. I am not conversant with any of those apps. Does Sony also have an app like that (for a6500, for example)? Is it comparable with Panasonic, or more like the others?

My mistake!

How did you process video files from GH5? It crashes Premiere Pro and Media Encoder.
I work with FCPX and the latest version handles the files just fine. Thanks!
Try Edius 8.5 pro or workgroup.
Hi is the GH4 has the ibis ? Thanks
no.
Preordered it. I was happy with the auto focus. For what I use it for the AF works well enough. I will be flying the camera on a gimbal tomorrow using the auto focus. I'm hoping it will work with the apps touch to focus

Stevan Chase back then, people weren't vlogging either.
The only think that will sell me over the GH4 is the in-camera stabilization, that would be a plus for my B4 2/3 lenses collection!
I would like to see if the AF improves using a External recorder. Also the difference (gh4 vs gh5) when grading V log L from the External recorder! Seems like Atomos has a new Ninja inferno to go with this camera.
My GH4 is working just fine. I don't consider upgrading just yet ;)

Great review! Im really thinking about getting the GH5 but also am thinking about the Sony A7S. Your thoughts? Or maybe you could do a review...I really want to see the difference in low lighting situations between the two and how their ISO compares.
Ty- Crain I would wait and see what sony comes out with soon.
The A7S iii is coming but no date has been set yet. But you know its going to be probably just over $3k where as the GH5 is $2k and money is factor.
i have been needing an upgrade and was looking at a gh5. would you recommend a gh4 if I'm making the switch from old canon dslrs or just go to gh5? im thinking that a gh5 and a gh4 as backup sounds like a good plan. but, maybe start with a gh4 first? maybe you think a gh5 clean start is a better idea? any suggestions on lenses would help. i have a few vintage nikkors i use now. thanks!

Rick Warrick please Mr Warrick is GH4 has the in body image stabilisation ? Thank u
Le GH4 n'a pas de stabilisation dans in-body, le GH5 le fait! Sorry for the bad French!
Le GH4 n'a pas de stabilisation dans le corps, le GH5 le fait!
Rick Warrick Merci beaucoup Rick. Votre français n'est pas du tout mauvais :-)
Merci, je suis en train de pratiquer un voyage à Paris en juin
Both the GH4 and GH5 are on my camera list of purchases.
I am currently useing the Nikon D5500 because off the great battery life.
I am hoping both the GH4 and GH5 have more than decent battery life.
Also wanting to purchase the Nikon D750
I never noticed the battery on my 5100 or 5500 lasting that long. I had about 4 spare batteries for each camera. The Nikon El-15 batteries last much longer. GH4 and GH5 Battery life is excellent for video - the GH5 does not last as long though if you have IBIS on and are recording at the higher bit rates.
Knock the wood or may be just Touch wood ? 😀
Nice Video Review.

Sorry - just saw this. Honestly the Gh4 would be fine and use the savings to buy a nice lens or two.
awesome video but even better tshirt... where did you get it... Kiwi here
I bought it in Queenstown, NZ :)
I just watched a couple of your reviews. It would be nice if you could be a bit more opinionated and stated your choice(s) is and the reason(s) for it. Not all equipment choices are based on usage scenarios and it would be nice to hear "I do/don't like it because..." Thanks for your great content.
GH4 max is 96 fps slow mo --- you said 120fps
Thanks for that correction!
ChemicalX Films I use over 120fps. Shoot in 60fps, then more than half the frames. It's not the same, so you're still correct, but every professional I know does this as the bit rate is higher.

Been around long enough to say I've seen this all before ... Remember when HD came into style? HD? who needs HD? ... just sayin'. Get ready for 4k, 6k ... don't stop thinking you OR your gear are good enough ... there is always one of your competitors who is and will get the business because you aren't.

Thank you!!
auto focus is a dealbreaker
I have not been bothered by this at all - 3 months of using this camera and I love it. Though if I wanted AF to track me or a subject walking I would be frustrated - I just don't shoot that way.
the sound of this video socks
that poor autofocus is really a huge downfall.
