Most people that value a work and life balance won't be able to occupy that position for any meaningful amount of time without going crazy.

My issue with making something of myself is, what if you were never treated like you were something to begin with? I would point at two very different peopleand go “look, see” but it’s hard to put to words what it is exactly that I’m pointing at. I’ll take a stab in any case. So my theory about people watching and what happens when people notice something about others… there’s a visual indicator of sorts, a tell tale signal that can be read, that essentially says what you’ve been through. Short term examples; when someone’s having a bad day you notice they aren’t talking as much and their body language is more deflated, you only notice if you’ve seen them chatty and chipper as the norm. When a girls got guy issues you can tell by the way she seems to be pulled back from what’s happening in her environment and it looks like the cogs are really whirring. When a young’un doesn’t get enough attention and they act like an obnoxious brat. We’re all open books if you can listen carefully, as I have painfully come to realise and I guess what I’m trying to say is that everyone who tells me to “Go make something of myself”, (as if I wasn’t a person here now who was worthy of time, love and attention for attempting to communicate my needs and engaging with life) was treated like they were never anything to to begin with. Like they’re emotions/perceptions didn’t matter. And to be quite frank I say no to that treatment. Sorry Dr Peterdad, I’m not obligated to live life but if I am going to live then I want to be treated like I have it within me to achieve what I set out to aim for. And if I can’t that I won’t be abandoned for not meeting expectations because there’s always another hierarchy to climb. I got neglected from young but Steve from Blues Clues (and mom later too) said “If we use our minds and take it a step at a time, we can do anything, that we wanna do.” I believed that and have carried that with me ever since such that it’s the foundation for which I try to sin less in life. (Jordan Peterson’s archery definition of sin) I tried my best but I didn’t succeed. I didn’t get what I wanted but maybe I’ll get what I need 😊 (playing off of Peterson’s words that if you aim for the highest star, what you need will manifest itself in your life, the fact he stood up for what he believed to be true and my dads words that you should always try your best, that you should treat other people how you wish to be treated and that I should try to put myself in the other persons shoes) And I am trying to use my mind to be a child worthy of entering heaven BEFORE I die, wouldn’t that be cool!
@@marcryantv Well I do a lot of support work with people with disability and No You Are Wrong, these guys don't choose to be ignored and neglected but it IS a recurring theme so you can take your finger wagging atitude and really think about how you came to that conclusion. Was it something you learned or something you were told? I came to this conclusion by experience, observation and learning. There was a journey involved. A whole thing. What did You do to get to that understanding? I could be off the mark but theres something to be said for truth in the journey that I feel like I undertook but I feel you did not so why would anyone believe you, unless they were told the same? Even if I'm off the mark don't throw the baby out with the bathwater ya feel?
Post Merit doesn't exactly mean that there isn't any at the greatness whatsoever. One example, could be a skills gap. Perhaps there’s a group where everyone is great but they are inept at preforming the the task they happen to be given. In the short term there is no perfect system for assigning merit to something. Given free competition, you have something like gradient ascent which over time is extremely effective. Freedom and merit are inseparable. Status cannot be preserved when there are merit based systems in the way.
All the hierarchies JP mentioned are failing. Tradesmen are incompetent. Educators are lost. Companies maximize greed. Local governments are unorganized. This whole thing is hanging on by a thread.
1:28 This single statement completely undermines the entire idea of a hierarchy of competence, whos doing the sucking here exactly? Well, mostly corporations, the government, and almost never the customer. Why would anyone, be they a supremely competent individual want to be sucked dry? That sounds like torture. Its like the horse from animal farm, is that the goal of a heirarchy? No. The goal of a hierarchy should be entirely moral, as in the people are the top are the people who deserve it the most, not the people we want to suck dry.
Society is doing the sucking. Take amazon for example. Why did we pump so much money into Amazon as a society? Was it because they were manipulating us? No. We gave them money because we want to be able to buy something in bed and have it delivered in a day. Why do we pay doctors so much? So they continue to save lives. Why do we give Disney so much money? So they continue to produce media that benefits our lives. If they stop, we stop giving them money. People aren't just blind morons who funnel money into crap. We choose to fund these companies because we think they better our lives.

@JasonMB999 What the vast majority of schools lack is sending students into the field to practice and experience, under the eyes and guise of qualifed personnel. That will open the eyes of many of what the actual field is about and you won't waste years only on emptying pens and daydreaming about expectations. This is why I finished my nursing school. I was sent, myself, into a military hospital. Extraordinary experience ! It was hard, harsh, demanding and complicated but the rewards were tremendously high. The ammount of social connections was imense. I got invited to watch multiple surgeries. I witnessed patients die in front of me. I got dermatitis that lasted for weeks and many more. Right into the first year, first semester, after several weeks of studying, we were sent into actual hospitals, which my nursing school was collaborating with, to experience and be helpful there. A group of 3 students had 1 qualifed personnel as mentor. And the school would register our paperwork from our designated hospital as official work. This would add to our working years and experience into the field. That was the real deal. All this information was already available to the school before I enrolled.
@@Feezwa i disagree with that because in school there are different subjects offered to kids and the purpose, besides developing their critical thinking is to give them an overview of the various fields they will get to choose from in the future. There is no possible way to give each one of them a full experience of what they will be dealing with and even if they did get that experience it would still be pointless as kids change their minds, what seems enjoyable now might not be tomorrow and what you hate now might be the best thing tomorrow, besides, as the world evolves so does the nature of the work. Hence expectations will also have to change. I think we should just accept whatever we choose to do and stop assuming that something else is better. Use the concept of 'better is the enemy of best'. Switch to the better one and you'll figure that what you left was the best, switch to what is best and you'll figure out that what you had was better.
I hate my life right now I’m almost 24 years old and I can’t hold a job longer than a week due to a burning resentment towards my gf who I desperately need to leave.
When he refers to topics such this is really surprising by how much he is NOT referring to Platoe/Socrates and the Republic. Many of the arguments he makes are already been mentioned there.
There is a big difference between pushing yourself to improve (where you just recognize you CAN improve) and hating yourself for being weak. If you assume thats what he's saying, it's not him who has the problem. It's you for making that corrupt connection.
@@gamezswinger so, I repeat... Where does he say that, or words to those effect where it's obvious that it is what he's saying? You can't just say something that you believe he is saying without providing any evidence whatsoever, so where does he even imply that we should be disgusted with ourselves and others?
@Ryan Robinett You suggested that 'less intellectual fields' are lower in demand. There are many more engineers than there are doctors, hence lower demand for engineers. Based on your logic it's because medicine requires more intellect than engineering. According to you, how is a doctor a better intellect than an engineer?
PVC / CPVC pipe joint set times range from 2 minutes (1/2" to 1 1/4" pipe at 60-100°F) to 48 hours (16"-24" pipe at 0-40°F). At temperatures above 60°F, a generally "safe" set time for typical residential smaller-sized plastic pipe (under 3") installations is 15 minutes before pressure testing to 180 psi, with increases needed for humid or cold conditions. Not all require 24 hours.
Who in world is saying that everyone in the world should be a brain surgeon? Or that hierarchies of competencies don't exist? I'm not sure where this guys gets this stuff..
It is.. but you supposed to beat corruption by being competent. People are so cowards that the moment someone cheated the system they refuse to play and quit and instead of fighting back.
Needs money to save the world is bullshit Goes to school stsrts teaches young ones about All life matters Gets fired 😳 like wtf Still gonna retry Have to because all life matters
more binary logic from Mr. Peterson ? for one, how does equity in its meaning of « justice, fairness, and impartiality » prevent hierarchies of competence ? the opposite seems far more likely... also, does the will for equity in its meaning of « equality » imply the will to level hierarchies ? for instance, equality of opportunity can actually help some people, who have skill and disposition for excellence but who find themselves in unfavorable circumstances, to actually emerge and reach the level of excellence they have the ability to reach, and would otherwise possibly never reach... how many women are discouraged of choosing careers in fields traditionally dominated by men precisely because the likelihood of being remunerated adequately and treated fairly is low ? surely some of those women are intelligent, conscientious, and competent, and would have their place among the bests... it seems axiomatic than a more equitable society makes it more likely that more people will choose a career based on what they love to do and/or are naturally good at, rather than for instance on how much jobs pay, and thus are more likely to operate from enthusiasm and passion and inspiration, rather than from obligation and fear and lack mentality or even from greed, which is not only good from a productivity perspective, but also in terms of health, including mental health, and of the overall quality of relationships between individuals...
Uncertain where to start maybe “how does equity…prevent hierarchy of competence?”. Perhaps read a 6 grade textbook on evolution, let me know how equity worked in that to produce the best adapter to surroundings. If you can convince me if that, perhaps the rest of your drivel will warrant a revisit.
@@orazor777 characterizing someone's reply as drivel does not make it so, counterarguments that show the flaws in the original arguments are required... suggesting that a grade 6 textbook on evolution holds an argument, or perhaps many, does not actually provide any argument, and is likely merely an unnecessary attempt at condescension... the tone you employ is not conducive to respectful conversation, and thus is not conducive to truth... it is merely an attempt at forcefully imposing one-sided perspectives, which is an immature way of participating in a public forum that typically derails conversation when it does not prevent it altogether, and leaves none the wiser... when people are confident that their views have value, they typically don't feel the need to be mean to others when presenting them... thus recourse to meanness is typically indicative of a lack of confidence in one's perspective... that being said, it seems you are implying that « equitable surroundings » are necessarily devoid of challenges... a level playing field is not necessarily a challenge-free playing field... it seems some challenges are artificially maintained, for instance through traditions of prejudice, and thus have no actual necessity to justify their existence, and such situations can be addressed through a will for equality... that does not mean eliminating all challenges, and thus that does not prevent adaptation nor evolution nor the formation of hierarchies... in determining which individuals are best at adaptation, it seems necessary that the surroundings be the same for every measured individual, lest the measure be skewed into meaninglessness...
@@orazor777 it's hard for you to retort because your points don't stand the test of truth... and so you resort to personal attacks... and that merely confirms that you have nothing of value to contribute...

(Jordan Peterson’s archery definition of sin)
I tried my best but I didn’t succeed. I didn’t get what I wanted but maybe I’ll get what I need 😊 (playing off of Peterson’s words that if you aim for the highest star, what you need will manifest itself in your life, the fact he stood up for what he believed to be true and my dads words that you should always try your best, that you should treat other people how you wish to be treated and that I should try to put myself in the other persons shoes)
And I am trying to use my mind to be a child worthy of entering heaven BEFORE I die, wouldn’t that be cool!
Sorry but no. You are never a victim unless by choice. All that matters is how you respond to things not what happens to you
@@marcryantv Well I do a lot of support work with people with disability and No You Are Wrong, these guys don't choose to be ignored and neglected but it IS a recurring theme so you can take your finger wagging atitude and really think about how you came to that conclusion.

Post Merit doesn't exactly mean that there isn't any at the greatness whatsoever. One example, could be a skills gap. Perhaps there’s a group where everyone is great but they are inept at preforming the the task they happen to be given.
In the short term there is no perfect system for assigning merit to something. Given free competition, you have something like gradient ascent which over time is extremely effective.
Freedom and merit are inseparable. Status cannot be preserved when there are merit based systems in the way.
Thanks for the advice but I actually have to work for a living.
everyone does stop making excuses and work Atleast an hour a day on your purpose/dream you probably spend hours on your phone
All the hierarchies JP mentioned are failing. Tradesmen are incompetent. Educators are lost. Companies maximize greed. Local governments are unorganized. This whole thing is hanging on by a thread.
Dam this shits radical
Hey kids, there’s some hierarchy of competence out there! Also, I have some free candy in my van
My plumber in SF gets paid more than my doctor does.
Because all the toilets are clogged with needles and used condoms
I'm confused, who wouldn't want to be competent?
When a child is born. It starts to learn everything backwards. Until it’s normal. And we teach them it!

'If you fail in one go try in another ' i wish people could just study for years to become lawyers and doctors and engineers and then go do another degree when they realise that they're not the beest at what they do. Only if life was that simple... I used to listen to this man, but I don't know what he smoked before making this particular video

What the vast majority of schools lack is sending students into the field to practice and experience, under the eyes and guise of qualifed personnel.
👏👏👏
Isn’t the problem that there are certain hierarchies which have nothing to do with competence? And that’s what we want to do away with
Or rather, competencies that are not conducive to a society that isn’t incredibly pissed at them.
“Sometimes” but those are dying institutions.
He clearly acknowledged that there are bad ones. You actually provided a great example of one of those hierarchies.
Be disgusted with yourself and be disgusted with others. That belief is eerily like the very tyrants that Jordan condemns…. It’s very fascinating.
Are we watching the same video where tf did you get that message.
There is a big difference between pushing yourself to improve (where you just recognize you CAN improve) and hating yourself for being weak. If you assume thats what he's saying, it's not him who has the problem. It's you for making that corrupt connection.
Now where the hell did he say that? Time stamp please?
@@alexwr that is the mantra repeated by Peterson but disguised as not abnormally sensitive, obsessive or anxious.
@@gamezswinger so, I repeat... Where does he say that, or words to those effect where it's obvious that it is what he's saying?
You can't just say something that you believe he is saying without providing any evidence whatsoever, so where does he even imply that we should be disgusted with ourselves and others?
Holy, he said more stuff in 8 mins than I do in a year....good stuff nevertheless
Do I have to?
Is there a better alternative?
No
Yes you do
Would you be at peace if you didn’t?
My guess is that you came across this video for a reason being the greater good
Hiarchy of competence. So then how do you decide how one surgeon is better than the next??? That's when racism kicks in to help you decide.

Violence isn't the answer.
It's a question and the answer is yes.

I don’t think want the neurosurgeon poking around in my brain hired on the basis of identity and competence second.
This is JP at his best. Fantastic. I wasn't impressed by the conservative manifesto but oh well.
Wanted to forward to a friend but unfortunately Jordan had to misuse the name of Jesus near the end of video.
I disagree
Did Jordan wait 24 hrs for the glue to cure before he filled the pipes with water?
you were that plumber?!!

People are mistaken'. They cry about capitalism but it's capitalistic extortion that is the problem not capitalism.
It is.. but you supposed to beat corruption by being competent. People are so cowards that the moment someone cheated the system they refuse to play and quit and instead of fighting back.

more binary logic from Mr. Peterson ?
for one, how does equity in its meaning of « justice, fairness, and impartiality » prevent hierarchies of competence ? the opposite seems far more likely...
also, does the will for equity in its meaning of « equality » imply the will to level hierarchies ? for instance, equality of opportunity can actually help some people, who have skill and disposition for excellence but who find themselves in unfavorable circumstances, to actually emerge and reach the level of excellence they have the ability to reach, and would otherwise possibly never reach... how many women are discouraged of choosing careers in fields traditionally dominated by men precisely because the likelihood of being remunerated adequately and treated fairly is low ? surely some of those women are intelligent, conscientious, and competent, and would have their place among the bests...
it seems axiomatic than a more equitable society makes it more likely that more people will choose a career based on what they love to do and/or are naturally good at, rather than for instance on how much jobs pay, and thus are more likely to operate from enthusiasm and passion and inspiration, rather than from obligation and fear and lack mentality or even from greed, which is not only good from a productivity perspective, but also in terms of health, including mental health, and of the overall quality of relationships between individuals...
