  • #JimbosGarage #Welding #MetalFabrication I built this aluminum light post for a customer and it had some tricky parts to it. The pointed cap was something I haven't done before but this was a great chance to learn. I also got to do a bunch of aluminum mig & tig welding which I don't get to often so this was a treat!

    Looks like a nice light for someone and come out great as always. When I mig weld alloy I like to do circlework. Other people do their own style but that's how I do it and works great for me.

    You make it look easy Jimbo. I just took a shot at mig welding aluminum with my PP220 MTS and it is not easy. I made a lot mistakes and I am going to reattempt it this weekend. Awesome work as always!

    Wow that's a tall project. Very nice job Jimbo. Hopefully the future owners really like how it turned out very much. Can't wait to see more videos soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work Jimbo. Weld on. Fab on. Keep making. God bless.

    Well, it’s official…. It suddenly occurred to me the other day sitting here watching YT and a thought entered my head. “Why haven’t I seen any “Jimbo’s Garage” in my feed for months now…”?? Two days later, there’s this. They can read our minds.

    Great work Jimbo! As always some fine craftsmanship. As far as your little mistake with the gang box, its how we learn is make mistakes. An old boss told me one time, " your not doing it right or you hadnt learn a thing yet if you dont make mistakes". As always ol timer, great work and cant wait see the next project you work on 👍

    Jimbo - 5356 is the far superior wire to use and is preferred over 4043. It will pass all structural tests. Also, need to slow your speed a bit, you can see the undercut in the weld, and also the hole at the end. That's caused by possible moisture either in your fill rod or in the air, which is getting trapped in the weld. Love the design. Been welding and using aluminum for the past 30 years.

      And 4943 is far superior to both 5356 and 4043! Unless you're Anodizing it then it has to 5356. I never use 4043 anymore. Always 5356 or 4943. I prefer 5356 for all my heavy aluminum welding 1/2 inch thick and bigger. But 4943 is preferred by all production aluminum welding shops around here.

    Maybe drill a small drain hole in the pocket that the extra bracing formed, don't want mosquito breeding ground.

    Great stuff! Do you have any issues contaminating the weld by using the beeswax to smooth edges beforehand?

    Being new to the trade, I would try to work so fast that I would do the same little mistakes all the time. Drilling holes in the wrong place, warping metal with heat, cutting wrong lengths. It is such a drag when the boss comes back to tell you it's wrong. These little things always bothered me, but with such a great boss, he would always tell me not to worry and just do it again.

  • @storfarbrorn489

    17:42; Yes, it does make a difference. You did it right. And it will always be easier to weld if you keep aluminium all clean, and heat it up before welding! But for this kind of work to heat it up may be a little overcourse.
    But at 18:52 you weld upwards - weld downwards instead, tac more and you will not have any issues.

    Aluminum doesnt need to get sandblasted or primed for powdercoat it can be powdercoated right way if its cleaned right paint should last forever if its done right

    I have found it easier to cut aluminum with a jig or skill saw when you spay it down with WD40.

    Is there a reason that you don’t wire brush or clean the aluminum just prior to welding?

    Loved the video. On your mig welder, is the spool for the 4043 aluminum ran the same? Or is it some kind of spool gun? I’m trying to figure out what setup I need to go with to mig weld aluminum. Thanks.

    Nice job but I would have offset the gussets down so that it doesn't make a reservoir...

  • @fasousa4798
    @fasousa4798 2 роки тому

    I did a pergula and stainless is a much better choice especially if sitting outside. I am actually surprised how good you were able to do without a spool gun for aluminium. The wire is so ductile that using the standard method usually ends up on a wire nest by the drive

    • @donsmith9081

      I agree. Maybe it was a push pull gun.

      ER5356 wire can be pushed OK trough a short MIG gun.

    I'd love to see a cut and etch on the process you're using with a big, cold weave.
    Also, the coughing you're experiencing the next day is due to the aluminum oxides going directly into your lungs. Keep that up and it's incurable.

    IS ALUMINUM ALSO GOOD FOR METAL GATE? WHAT IS MORE DESIRABLE TO USE, THE ALUMINUM OR THE IRON METAL. CAN YOU GIVE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES?

    • @Phoenix-One0922
      @Phoenix-One0922 2 роки тому +1

      You Never use aluminum for a Gate... Too expensive, not strong enough security, it will bend with use and fabrication costs will drive you into the poor house! Do your homework. Aluminum it's for inside decoration and looks, never for gating. Gate building is structural and part of the definition in the word 'structural' is the word "strength" and Aluminum is not for Structural building unless is designed thru engineering and I'm sure you're not an engineer if you're asking about gates...

    • @jonnyeagle839
      @jonnyeagle839 7 місяців тому

      Only use aluminum for a gate, it's lighter and you won't have to work so hard to open it
