Man Bobs such a great teacher. I'd love to see more videos like this where you're teaching someone in the video, ive learned so much more then if the correct method was shown initially. There super helpful too, but man these videos are money for someone learning like me. Thanks.
This was a very informative and interesting video as always. Mr. Moffett, yourself and Mr. Man Cub have the chemistry to put out entertaining subject manner. It was a great pleasure to meet you both at Fabtech, and I would encourage anyone whom can, to attend this next year in Chicago. I surely will.
I welded aluminum with a millermatic spoolgun for years, but then I took a big step up to the lincoln 350mp running pulse/ pulse on pulse with a push pull gun and have never looked back 👍😀...
@@motoz3939 Yeah it is! I weld 1/2" and 3/4" on pulse, but it really shines when Im doing thin stuff like 1/8" and 3/16" with pulse on pulse, it looks like I tigged it..
I agree I ran one of those Lincoln's for 3 years and loved it unfortunately the company I worked for closed however it was the best aluminum machine I ever used.
Please do more Alu spool gun videos! I have to weld old broken aluminum trailers/etc at work from time to time and would like to see some more tips and tricks, volt and wire feed settings etc. I use a miller spool gun with .030” 4043 running off a old Lincoln idealarc 350 and straight argon. It can be a real pain to get a decent weld!
Steve Jones what kind of trailers? I fix western commodity trailers on the daily. I usually run at 21.5-22 volts and 5-6 on Wf speed. If you have feeding issues take the wire out and blow threw the liner if you have the tension to tight the wire will be spiraling out the gun and the aluminum chips clog the liner up n it can be a nightmare from hell lol. Just back the tension off then tighten it slightly tell it pushes the wire threw ur fingers. Also depending on the thickness warm the metal up with a torch not hot but 100 degrees or so it welds so much better.
I would recommend using 5356 wire, 4043 is commonly used for cast aluminum and not structural. Also try using 3/64 wire, it’s the most common and probably easiest to learn, set your voltage, then set your wfs, if it’s too hot still, turn your voltage and wire down, once you get the hang of it, weld coupons and keep those settings written down for the next time you want to use those settings.
That 5356 is sootier than 4043 but theres a lot of pulling going on. I like doing a little c shape weave on the first puddle to begin the weld. Seems to help get some heat in the part ahead of the weld.
Why do so many people think the correct way to weld aluminum is to drag with no manipulation of the puddle whatsoever, I mean jesus, turn the wire speed up!! You're too damn hot bob!! My perfect temp. For 1/4 with .035 is 21.5 and 460. Comes out amazingly every time, and navy inspectors don't seem to point out flaws that often, I guess it's just me. When you're taught to build boats, I guess you're just better with aluminum than everyone else lol. Btw, you want the crackle, the reason y'all have so much soot, is because you don't have enough wire speed, or enough angle forward, just a friendly tip. Keep on making the great videos I love it.
Another video with some good info! May I suggest that you make a video addressing letting the metal cool down, preventing it from overheating. Especially in a testing setting
Damnit Bob!! Why didn't you tell me about bending the wire over, about 30 years ago!!!!???? Those damn birds nests are one reason I never got into doing much aluminum... I might have to dig the old spool gun and control box out of the parts room..... Put it back on the welder😎 Careful of the green pee!!!
I’ve noticed the side pockets and rub rails on our aluminum flatbeds have the crater in the center of the weld- like they are welding them towards the center from each end. Is this technique to prevent the stress cracking?
The J move explanation answered a long time question I had of how the weave dime stack was completed. Do you do the same motion to get this pattern when TIG welding?
Is it me or did praxair just buy everything in town I could not find an independent well they did me right the 30lb spool they gave me burns in really good
The closer you are to the equator the less gravity you have. I add 1 inch of WFS per 100 miles going towards the equator and less when traveling away! Lol
Nice video , and can you tell us about that stand you have on who makes it ? If it's high in price how can a poor person make one ? Maybe next video ? Let's do a video on building one on this channel. In a poor life for us poor folks . Who wants to learn more on welding for the future Sir . Great video like always.
Bob, it’s a bit confusing about which Al alloy to use. Mostly I use 4043 in my spool gun. But I couldn’t pass up a deal on 3 one pound spools of 5556, but I haven’t figured out exactly what it’s best for. But $15 for three new, sealed spools was too good to pass up. Were you using, what was it again, 5356, because it’s stiffer, or melts at a higher temp, or whatever, because it was overhead, or for some other reason?
It might be GREAT! I can't wait to find out. It's pretty exciting in the TIG sector. I tried it in a casual way, maybe as much as 1/4 Helium, down to maybe ten per cent. My TIG welder won't start in pure helium, and it's expensive anyway!
Nice video! I've noticed that everlast machines are used in most of your videos (than esab's). Why do u prefer the everlast machines? Are better than esab?
Appreciate & enjoy all the videos on your channel. Would you have any video coming out on welding with larger wire 3/32 - 5/32 FCAW. A lot of shops and yards in the NorthWest burn that wire
sure! all kinds of MIG wire is supplied in those little spools. There are little plastic clamshell things to hold the spools. I got a lot of this stuff when I first bought a spool gun. Haven't used much of it, but the time will surely come!
Jesus, turn up your wire speed, if there is that fine frosty spatter around the weld, you need more wire. Just a small amount but it will help with the weld profile
Curling the end of the wire is a great idea. Thanks Bob!
Really like the interchange between teacher and student. This awesome video is quite helpful! Thanks.
just starting to use a spool gun ,,,everything you say about pushing instead of pulling is true ...makes a huge différence...thank you !

Never thought of a wire wheel impregnating the oxides into the surface, that makes sense.
Hey Bob,glad to see you’re still teaching the youngen! Get him some good time on aluminum.

Bend the wire over. I learned something tonight. Keep those aluminum spool gun tricks coming as that is all I use for aluminum. Thanks.
I welded aluminum with a millermatic spoolgun for years, but then I took a big step up to the lincoln 350mp running pulse/ pulse on pulse with a push pull gun and have never looked back 👍😀...
350 mp with a push pull gun is the best aluminum setup I've ever used

The look on Bob's face when man cub said I move it forward then a 64th back is priceless. We all know he wanted to say wtf you talking about boy?????
Love videos like this! With mancub not being a pro and someone thats like me in that he asks a lot of questions. Good stuff.
Bob is like the mr.wizard of the welding world
Very good stuff lucky guy being able to work with bob
Bob moffat is the greatest always keeping it real
Excellent curving the wire tip. Never thought of it. Just tried it a few mins ago. And loved it. Keep burning everyone.
Their's alot of us many cubs out here and learning more watching it Bob thumbs up
Bob’s humor is drier than the Atacama Desert lol a skill that is earned with time no doubt
Bob, I enjoy watching and learning from your channel. You're the best👍
Great to see some aluminum mig! In ship building we do short circuit transfer with 75% helium 25% argon.
I work on ships and we use 100% helium because of our wps! I told them that 25% argon would really help stay in spray transfer better
That 5356 is sootier than 4043 but theres a lot of pulling going on. I like doing a little c shape weave on the first puddle to begin the weld. Seems to help get some heat in the part ahead of the weld.
You have so much knowledge bob and someone could learn so much from you

I appreciate your informative and entertaining video.
I've been thinking about getting a spool gun for my everlast welder. These are great videos.
Great video. At 18:00 can see the heat just above the “cupon”!
I never did like using a straight nozzle. 45° wire nozzle is a game changer
Thanks for some great tips on running a spoolgun
Using the j motion, you are actually making a little shelf to support the second part of your weld motion.
@@johnc4352 yeah sorry

Thanks for the video guys. Keeping us lone wolfs on track.
Good stuff amigo spool guns are quite interesting
6:28 fine spatter like that means you need more wire speed
I love this video style!!
I’ve noticed the side pockets and rub rails on our aluminum flatbeds have the crater in the center of the weld- like they are welding them towards the center from each end.
Is this technique to prevent the stress cracking?
Also no weaving, be stubborn and hold it in till both are fused and that’s how you adjust your speed. You have to have a tight fit, no gap.
If you are using an E5356 wire, the "soot" is Magnesium oxide. E4043 will do the same but not to the same extent.
I always used 25% helium and 75% argon when I mig welded aluminium
The J move explanation answered a long time question I had of how the weave dime stack was completed. Do you do the same motion to get this pattern when TIG welding?
Yes! That and leaving the wire on the top side of the weld.
Very useful video - Thanks for this one.
Do you have a video on using a push pull gun ?
Very good video guys.
I like the heckling. Lol.
when using a spool gun do you have to pre heat the aluminium?
No, but be aware of cold starts.
Thanks very informative.
This is great. My spool gun is in the mail 👍
What is the suck back on the backside of the weld from? To much heat? Not enough travel speed?
I do Aluminum in pulse. With a push - pull wip. I think it's called a cobra or something. Never done 4F though.
That is so nice welding, 😃😃😃Thanks
@weld.com got a question for your camera guy what do you use as filter for filming?
good lesson , thanks ..
What settings did you get spray at?
... how the hell did that wire brush arc when you were cleaning off the weld???
I have 252 STI and cannot control wirespeed with the dial on the spoolgun any reason?
That crater at the end isn't nothing a die grinder can't fix.
when you click on the video dude looked like dabs wellington haha
Is it me or did praxair just buy everything in town I could not find an independent well they did me right the 30lb spool they gave me burns in really good
Can u stick weld on mill scale or do u have to grind it to the bare metal
You can weld through most of it depending on application.
What type of heat yall running for oh .035
I'm working on Aluminum now for some future swimming pool projects. This video definitely helps

“I was trying to do your J”... “well you didn’t do my J” Hahahahahahaha
what spool gun it is? parker dsp 360?
What is your Argon flow set at?
aluminum welding angle of the hand should oscillate evenly arc will be better

I’m confused which normal. Your close up video looked like drag to me. Not push. Is that just optical allusion? Or am I missing something.
Illusion
Preheat.. first clean .. clean 3/4 stick out
Don't interrupt. LOL!!! And I know I've said this before but please wear a mask or have a sniffer to vacuum those fumes. Another great video brother.
Lol 64 , and the teacher like ok kid . I heard it all! Your confuse kids let me show you the next letter in the alphabet
Dont argue boy! LoL
Why you going top to bottom instead of bottom to top like normal?
So why is aluminum so much louder? In welding school went from flux core to welding aluminum and godamn you need eat plugs for this.
Cause it uses more amp
Bob without anyone else- straight to the point
Bob and Mancub- wtf are you drinking. You can't even pronounce it.... yeah I'd like to see you try C25.
balls were busted in the making of this video.
I call that motion a triangle motion rather than j
Bob is a good teacher. I bet he doesn’t even hit you with the wire brush if you stuff up either. 😜
You didn't do the "J"
Is that a crater 😂👍
🤣🤣🤣
To slow wire speed making all that pepper splatter
Lol we do it
Too bad you guys don't have any fun.
funny how Bob didnt do anything that he told mancub to do. lmao
But he did.

64ths? 32ds??? Tf

Sorry Bob man cubs.
i learned that , i was young too.. and stupid
He had a drag angle both ways..🙄
Optical illusion
Sorry guys you do not pull aluminum. You don’t stand a chance. You have to push and learn how to weld hot.
That's what Bob said.
