  • Freelance writers and wannabe writers: you don't have to know SEO.
It's great if you want to learn it, but trust me, learn it on the job!
Any client asking for a writer AND an SEO strategist is asking for a lot.
I write for $1k/piece and I'm a skilled SEO, but I never add my SEO insights when there's another SEO involved. I stay in my lane!
Clients with a talented SEO will guide you.
If you don't have a guide here are some general tips for incorporating SEO best practices.
Ask the clients to provide two core elements.
    1) Focus keywords
    2) Supporting keywords (basically other keywords that you want to use).
    Put the focus keyword in:
    ✨page/blog title
    ✨title tag
    ✨meta descriptions
    ✨headings
    ✨naturally through the article
    Supporting keywords are used in:
    ✨headings where natural
    ✨naturally through the article
Simply let your client know that you require the keywords from them.
I hope this helps! Any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

This information is really backed up by my own experience from working in medical SEO. The primary strategies were optimize content around keywords, qualify the articles through a 3rd party reviewer in whatever field we were writing about, and backlink outreach. The responsibility for the writers was to write human readable articles using the keywords provided a range of times. They never had to do their own keyword research, content auditing or anything like that. I think SEO can scare away writers sometimes because they think it is their responsibility.
