I was at this show. We were spoiled back then in Connecticut. On the same tour within an hour drive you could see the Dead in Hartford, Springfield, Bridgeport, New Haven, or Worcester to name a few. Great times. Fantastic that the music still endures.
Never played Bridgeport, but yeah, they'd play New Haven, Hartford and Springfield or Worcester. It was before they figured out they could play 3 nights in Hartford and we'd all come to them.
@@johnshanley4407 I guess I was mistaken about Bridgeport. But certainly we could see a lot of shows in New England back then within the same tours, which was awesome!
Damnnnn; sounds like a pretty fuggn good time. Would’ve loved to have seen them out in Boston ‘76 (The Road Trips vol. x num. x one, with “comes a time” - best version of that tune I’d ever heard) too. Must’ve been a helluva time my man; I’m out in Haverhill, MA - would love for Jerry to just pop outta the thin air and start playing a show in the sky for this world right now lol. 🌎🌍🌏⚡️💀⚡️🌏🌍🌎
Was born in 72 so I was kinda late but thanks to the good Lord in enough time to get the chance to experience this special special band. I like Althea alot because she was probably one hell of a cool chick you know? I believe really unique and special music tells us a story.. and it's almost like we all knew Althea too you know? I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I will never say that keeping the music and genuinely joyfully good feeling still sorta alive, actually live... and John Mayer is one hell of a talented dude no question, and it's really cool this song turned him on. But man I'm so sorry for the very Earth itself losing this bunch of weird wonderful sometimes ridiculous kinda, group of dudes that hung out together and played whatever they felt like at the moment. That's to me, THEE secret to the Grateful Dead. They were having as much fun as the audience lots of shows and that's why none of us wanted to go back home after experiencing them for the first time. What makes them in my opinion once again, THEE BEST LIVE ROCK BAND EVER, was the genuine love affair between us and them and the unmistakable, impossible for anyone to duplicate I don't care how talented they might be, was the pure raw unmistakable and obvious from the first notes of the first song they decided to open it with like literally when they are plugged in and tuned up and ready to give us some more pure honest genuine JOY of a Dead show. Man I ain't the only one by a lot but nothing I have ever taken drank smoked or slept with has ever made me feel better than a Dead show. There's music... good music... good live music I've enjoyed from other groups of course... but it's a distant second place, because then there's the Grateful Dead. Man I get it why some people were turned off by the name of the group, and the skeletons, and probably all the smiling joyful silly hippies there that didn't even have to get into the actual concert and were there feeling it again and again and again and again. I told my wife the other day that it's ridiculous looking at it from the outside and it really didn't matter if you managed to get a great Owsely dose, or were stone cold sober, you and the band and everyone else was high on the pure genuine joy of a Grateful Dead show. My only regret is that I was born about 10 years too late. But then again, it's not enough unless you were blessed to see every single show. And then that wouldn't be enough!! Wow that's a lot of typing for a old burntout Deadhead hippie like me but that's pretty much the only way I can attempt to tell someone about it. Yeah everybody is high!! On pure unmistakable genuine freaking joy. I honestly love the Grateful Dead and miss it like a lost family member. But omgosh the memories!! Sorry for being such a profound get to the point dude here but actually not sorry about anything else besides I, like so many others, didn't get a Ripple. Thanks for letting me ramble and I should probably shut up before I cry.... but it's not because of sadness I'm smiling too!! I'm gonna damn well keep truckin on until I can't and then I'll figure out how to get some cool shows when I get to the other side. Maybe even hangout with them if I can 👍✌️😎👋💯
This is great audio. The Dead were the original You Tube, graciously allowing their music to be shared freely. How many of us have some of our greatest memories at a Dead show? Now we get to hear those shows on a boot or now on YT.
I was listening to a dead show from 72 where bobby actually told a taper to back up about 20 rows if he wants a good recording most bands would throw them out and confiscate their equipment
Jonathan Socha That is very cool. There is an interview where Bobby acknowledges that a lot of people counted on them touring as a way for those people to feed their kids. He also answered why they allowed bootlegging. His answer was very satisfying. Paraphrasing, but he said something like a lot of people, and I don't know why have had some very fond moments of joy at our shows. After the music is played it is in the ether so who are we to say it doesn't belong to whoever wants it? Are you going to try and see them this summer? Just three shows is what I've heard.
I would say 81 is when the aud tapes got spectacular. Almost better than the boards. I love my 70s tapes. The give you a real feel of the live show. 8-6-71. This is kleen. Smoking.
I love the beginning. Very quiet start, no one hears it. Second go around, people start to pick up on it. Third go around band kicks in, place goes friggin' nuts. Sound quality is superb. Great lows.
this song just makes me happy -- Jerry's singing voice and then singing guitar with the band jammin' power recharging it again and again - so goddamn good!
81 was the greatest year for the dead. 82 came in second. insane shit, all around. straight ahead, balls to the wall, greatness. jer's on the verge of his hair on ness, but not totally lost like late 83 or 84. his voice is still there - starting to fade in late 82. 81 is the shiiiiiit. turn it up to 81.
This is a badass recording. I can see the shape of the ballroom from Jerry's first lead notes bleeding down the walls. Nothing beats a great Aud. Thanks for turning me onto this one.
I only saw the Grateful Dead twice... at the Worcester Centrum in the late 80's. and again in Boston Garden in '94... and it would seem that that show is legendary..... so I was blessed.
Jerry and the Boys encouraged " bootlegging." All of their concerts had sections set aside for audio artists eager to catch a moment. Look up " Dick's Picks."
Cool! I went there with no ticket..... I wandered around in front of the Garden, saying. "I need a miracle, folks!" BTW- I found a good tie- die t-shirt from that tour on the internet...... and found another in a leather/ biker shop in upstate NY last week!
"i was born to be a bachelor. althea told me "ok, that's fine." now i'm trying to catch her." such an awesome line. never considered that it might be about MG. interesting to think about, thanks for sharing.
Mike Mccoy Good call. The words, or course, are Hunter's, but I'm sure he had that situation in mind. Quite a strange push-pull situation that JG and MG had, and the lyrics to this song surely capture it.

It is awesome but makes me wonder how much debate there is on this, and which other Althea's share the pantheon. How many have you heard and which are the best?
4and20blackbirds 3/28/81 rockpalast is #1 althea out there I've heard so far. And I've heard as many versions I could find. Alot! Love this one in a different way, I like the way the guitar tone was recorded and seems louder than the rest of the instruments on the track when jerry's soloing, love the screaming guitar on this althea
I just found the website headyversion.com that lists Head voted best versions ever. I'm going through them now. This one is smokin' and ever so soulful.
The versions from the1980 shows at Nassau collesium are actually way better sonically. There's a little to much compression in thus particular recording. Check it out and compare. I got a lot of joy doing it.
I always think of "The Walrus and the Carpenter" ......"the time has come " Walrus with a beard and a guitar on the beach Far below the mountains of the moon 😀
this tune hath turned my fiance into a Deadhead. opening interlude will be spliced into the bride's song when she graces the aisle. sssshhhhhhhhh, don't tell her

It looks a bit like Australia! Anyone know if the Dead came to Oz? That's where I'm from...
it's on the back cover of the original "anthem of the sun" album. don't know if it's on the reprints.
take a look at the back cover of "anthem..." again.

I just found the website headyversion.com that lists Head voted best versions ever. I'm going through them now. This one is smokin' and ever so soulful.
1. 3/28/81 - Rockplast is the definitive version of this song
2. Alpine 7/19/89 is a close 2nd
3. This version - 3/14/81 a close 3rd
I guess the best 2 versions were played 2 weeks apart in 81
Whoa!
A whole new Level of WoW Man!
The Nassau stadium 1980 is the best version
sick, CT love!!!!
check out 12/1/79 Stanley theater
efn RIGHTEOUS version man. a top 20 possibly
The versions from the1980 shows at Nassau collesium are actually way better sonically. There's a little to much compression in thus particular recording. Check it out and compare. I got a lot of joy doing it.
😊
my beautiful big bro! This one is for your Ryan Stuart. I LOVE YOU. RH! RH! RH!
Been working on covering this jam

Hot Hot Hot!!
Althea was 2 years old in 81

I always think of "The Walrus and the Carpenter" ......"the time has come "
Walrus with a beard and a guitar on the beach
Far below the mountains of the moon 😀
thinking about less and less and forgetting the love we bring
+Ana Ruiz Bacon about it
this tune hath turned my fiance into a Deadhead. opening interlude will be spliced into the bride's song when she graces the aisle. sssshhhhhhhhh, don't tell her
Hartford - Nothing like cutting thru macys to get the band
Try 10/14/83 Althea on for size. I'd like to find a taper version like I had. Much better than Dicks Picks with the live sound and crowd involvement.
I love audience tapes - never understood why those fuckin soundboard tapes became popular
DOES ANYONE KNOW THE DETAILS OF THE PICTURE?! I want it as a poster.
omg, the grateful dead holding guns?!?! they would be cancel culture nowadays. because the fascists who claim to be anti fascists would destroy them. fuck all those fucks. thanks darwin kemp. :-)
Seek an ye shall find
Working man’s era
jerry always played guitar like the devil dancing in the rain,
i call his style trippiling
He does a lot of things. Thats definitely one of them. Another one that springs to mind is when he starts folding taffy. 72's a good year for that
