Just had exact same thing happen on a different vehicle. It will most likely be a bad bendix gear plunger. The bendix is the gear wheel on the outside of the starter. The plunger is what moves it in and out to engage the flywheel. If knocking it doesn’t coax it back into action then something may have physically broken rather that just a sticky solenoid. Mine failed without warning and no amount of banging got it back. You can get parts to rebuild starters, however, unless it’s something really exotic or expensive it’s usually better to replace the whole starter at that point. Now I have the old starter out I’m going to pull it apart to have a look. Once I have had a chance to do that I’ll post a video about it.
Cheers legend, confirmed this worked for my VT!
That’s great! Good luck with it all!
How do you operate the cruise control?
Mine is just spinning at full speed, solenoid is not engaging cog with flywheel. Whacking with hammer did not help.
