Carol and Gerry lived across the street from me at 2635 Brown Street in Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn when I was 9 years old. They had a maid or a babysitter. A black young teenager named Eva. Eventually she recorded a song they wrote called 'The Loco Motion'.😊
In 1962 when this song came out, I was an apprentice and I went down to a cafe on the industrial estate where our factory was. As I went into the cafe 'The locomotion' was playing on the jukebox and about 20 young girls in their companies factory jackets were doing the locomotion. Every body was smiling in the cafe, it is such a vivid happy memory that comes to me every time I hear this great old song.
+bracsim Hey grandpa, This is our generation, thanks for the keys. I guess you don't understand Americas history. The good old days when minorities were minorities huh. Yeah i bet you loved those times. Just like 1900 When Descendants of previous settlers hated and banned the immigrants from Europe looking for better lives. Those being, Italian, Russian,Jewish, British, Spanish, Irish, etc. and to think that someone of such age is like you? wow. I guess some people never change.
Little Eva's death. "She continued performing until she was diagnosed with cervical cancer in October 2001. She died on April 10, 2003 in Kinston, North Carolina, at the age of 59,[1] and is buried in a small cemetery in Belhaven, North Carolina." (Wikipedia). Little Eva lived in obscurity much of her life and her death was barely noticed. May she Rest In Peace.
Thanks Steve for the information on Little Eve. As late as time is in 2020 the big names that made the Music Revolution of the 1950 s and 1960s are passing on. I feel bad ever time I read about one of the famous singers and entertainers that father time has taken away.
The sad part is the story behind her grave marker. Turns out for years her grave was unmarked. White wooden cross marks it now with a local Belhaven, NC club making a appropriate maker for her now featuring a train on it with the phrase “She sings with the angels”. She was a maid for Carol King and her husband Gerry Goffin. They wrote the song for her because of a dance she created and showed to their kids while babysitting. And the rest as they say is history.
Over 60 years later and it still resonates Big Time - Goffin & King compositions captured the magic of the times. Little Eva introducing a new dance craze is an iconic symbol of those very special 60’s.
I was standing on a balcony over the gym floor while the sock hop was going on. This song was playing and a pretty girl I barely knew was dancing to it. I was 16. That girl and I have now been married for 52 years.
I love this song! When I was eight years old my dance class had a recital using this as the backing track. It was the most fun I'd ever had. According to my mother I was the only kid who not only remembered the dance, but freestyled it! Apparently when my coach confronted me about changing the moves I said, "Don't blame me, blame the locomotion!" The two of us still laugh about it to this day. I kind of wish I'd stayed in tap dancing! Music is so powerful, how can anyone stand still hearing it?
What s cute story, I van picture it and you. If you can, please describe the steps to the locomotion as I don't remember seeing specific moves. When it first came out I just made steps up. I know arms would move with elbows in small wheels turning motion, but what should legs do? Lol.
Occasionally, we used to get to dance in gym class. When this song played, we all got up and danced the locomotion all around the gym. The sixties were fun!
That song was composed and written by Carol King and Gerry Goffin. At that time this little black teenage was working for them as a maid and babysiter. A studio wanted to record a demo of the song but without a signer, at the last minute the couple decided to ask Little Eva to come at the studio to record the song. She did it so well that it was decided that she will do the final recording. The rest is history.
The story behind this song is as good as the song itself. Little Eva was baby sitting for Carole King and Gerry Goffin - they thought her dance moves were cool, and they wrote "Loco-Motion" (originally for another vocalist). Apparently Don Kirschner heard Eva's demo, they changed singers - and the rest is history. It's the type of story that's hard to believe, but apparently this one is true. Being at the right place at the right time is often as important as talent, but having both is pure gold.
Never forget Little Eva, always one of the best. Bet you all can't count on one hand how many female singers today can hold a candle to the female singers in the 60's, can you ? ? ?

The men are all in lovely suits, and the girls in bright dresses!! They are all happy and smiling!!! Sometimes music does magical and wonderful things! People definitely need that, specially in this cruel time, i hope everyone is doing well xx
As a 90's kid, I miss so much hearing the "oldies" on the radio. They played them all the time. It was so great. Slowly in the 2000's they faded out of existence. Songs like this one, Pretty Woman, Earth Angel, Mr Sandman, Lolipop, etc.
I had Sirus for a wily they had 40's 50 's 60 's 70 'and soon ,it was a great chance to hear all the old's like my self ,with all my respect peace out .
we did this dance at a wedding reception over the weekend.. I never heard of Little Eva until then, but i can see why people back then knew how to have fun..
As a white kid growing up in a small, Pacific NW logging town, I was so in love with the R&B female singers of that era. Little Eva. Betty Everett. Ronnie Spector. The Supremes. and so on "Now THESE are women!", I thought to my 13 year old self. (at age 70, I'd still run away with Dianna Ross, should she ask!).
Talk about a song with legs ... that song is just as fun now as it was the day it was recorded. A birthday party staple. It's one of those few songs that you'll see a 90 year old great grandmother dancing with her 8 year old great granddaughter with and all ages between. 60 years on.

It's vertical sex.
Encore une chanson qui après 62 ans , restera à jamais gravée dans nos mémoires !
Even though i wasn’t born in the 60s, i do love 60s songs! And when i hear this song, I picture a cafe/bar with men and women dancing and doing the locomotion!! The men are all in lovely suits, and the girls in bright dresses!! They are all happy and smiling!!! Sometimes music does magical and wonderful things! People definitely need that, specially in this cruel time, i hope everyone is doing well xx
Still love this song.😍😍
As a 90's kid, I miss so much hearing the "oldies" on the radio. They played them all the time. It was so great. Slowly in the 2000's they faded out of existence. Songs like this one, Pretty Woman, Earth Angel, Mr Sandman, Lolipop, etc.
I had Sirus for a wily they had 40's 50 's 60 's 70 'and soon ,it was a great chance to hear all the old's like my self ,with all my respect peace out .
listen to GOLD RADIO - a UK radio station - available on line and in DAB in the car!

The pride and joy of North Carolina Little Eva
Grand bravo pour cette belle chanson...
Masterpiece never gets old.
As a white kid growing up in a small, Pacific NW logging town, I was so in love with the R&B female singers of that era. Little Eva. Betty Everett. Ronnie Spector. The Supremes. and so on "Now THESE are women!", I thought to my 13 year old self. (at age 70, I'd still run away with Dianna Ross, should she ask!).
gross
War verliebt in das Lied
Bekam die Single von meinem 2. Freund❤
As popular today as it was back then, the fondness of memories this great old tune holds for countless old movers and grovers
No matter how much I wish these times will never come back...honestly, it makes me feel dead on the inside.
Love that music...Great songs ...nice memories!!!
Little Eva in 1962 ...so fortunate that this video is available. What wonderful talent! I hope someone produces a movie about her life.
Talk about a song with legs ... that song is just as fun now as it was the day it was recorded. A birthday party staple. It's one of those few songs that you'll see a 90 year old great grandmother dancing with her 8 year old great granddaughter with and all ages between. 60 years on.
A little bit of rhythm, and a lot of soul. ✔️
I can't vote, but that cup of hot coffee is doing me wonders with this song. Wishing you all those beautiful blue skies and golden sunshine! :D
