  • I've always loved the "Psycho" score, but the mono soundtrack is sorely lacking. The new Bluray includes simulated stereo, but here is the faithful Danny Elfman CD synched to the film.

    I remember seeing this scene for the first time. I almost panicked. It's just superb. It's your worst nightmare come true. From that moment on it becomes clear that she made a terrible choice, but the worst part is that after that glance her boss gave her there's no way back. That sealed her fate. The way this is filmed and the score can't be any better.

      It's classic genius Hitchcock, in that he takes an ordinary innocent guy crossing the street, and turns him into an object of terror when he stops in his tracks as though to question something on her actions, and/or if she made the deposit.. Grant it, its all through her view point, and also amazing as to how what is now happening , is all done through shots.. The envelope on the bed, the suitcase, and then her driving.... Ironic also , the shot of the shower in the background.

      She could have turned back any number of times but didn't. She just made it worse for herself with every move forward.

      Mike Rubinate yeah, that shower head in the background is so creepy, and obviously phallic. Note how "dark" the tub is too -- anything but white. Weird.

      @@StealthMode3924 Nope, when she's in her bedroom at home, packing her suitcase and psyching herself up to steal the money in the envelope on her bed. The door to her bathroom is open behind her and you see the shower frequently during this scene. It's foreshadowing what's going to happen to her, but you couldn't know that the first time you see this film.

    I love that they fixed up the score. Before, I remember thinking when Marion's boss sees her in her car, that the music was a bit slow. Now, in this, it's perfect! When the music hits at Marion's reaction, it's sharpe. Goes perfectly with her reaction.

      First, "they" is me - I made this clip. Second, absolutely nothing is sped up. I synched the CD to the film precisely - this is exactly the speed of the original film. Nothing was changed. I love internet "experts".

      @@123boink I am not an expert or pretend to be. But I do know the Marion packing scene very well. It's one of the most beautifully timed and executed scenes in the film. I played the scene from the new 4K version agsinst your version and yours, with apologies, seemed off. Maybe it wasn't sped up but all the brilliant timing in the scene felt slightly askew.. It doesn't sound right to me. Sorry.

    • @123boink
      @123boink  2 роки тому

      @@milesbecky1 It is 100% exactly the same speed as the original scene. I'm a professional film and video editor, and I made certain not to touch the original film in any way. I simply added the music from the stereo CD, synched to precisely match the film, while maintaining the sound effects - something that took many hours of work. Since both the film and the CD are running simultaneously, they have to be in perfect synch. It is of course a different recording, so it will not sound exactly the same as the original film soundtrack, but the speed has not been altered by even a fraction of a second.

      @@123boink My apologies for referring to your hard work as "terrible." That was unkind. It's just that I know this film so well, having seen it at least a hundred times since opening day in 1960. I was also at Universal when we made that ill-advised remake in 1998. We were so happy, for example, that we could do the opening "zoom" into the hotel window in a way that Hitchcock couldn't. Alas, in spite of the bells and whistles, his was better. The packing scene is one of my favorite scenes. Right from the start I thought the first cue on the suitcase on the bed was a fraction late. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't know. But kudos to your hard work.

    • @123boink
      @123boink  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the apology. I agree that the remake was a bizarre and failed experiment. But it did add some good things, like the window move - and Norman would absolutely masturbate while looking through the peephole. But the best thing about it was Elfman's recording of the score. I love the score as much as the film, and it was great to finally hear it well-recorded. I have no problem with mono recordings, but I think the original soundtrack music was poorly recorded, and Herrmann's later version was way under speed. I was surprised how much of Elfman's version did not match the soundtrack - extended phrases, repeated music, etc. - so it took a lot of work to make it match. I achieved synch by visually matching the waveforms: in my editing software, the first frame of the CD audio was visually aligned exactly to the first frame of the film audio, so I'm sure the start of the music was precise. I then checked the end of each musical phrase, and altered the CD audio (not the film) to achieve perfect synch - otherwise I could not run both audio tracks together and preserve the sound effects. The only change I made was to alter the mix in favor of the music, since the whole point of the clips was to feature Elfman's gorgeous recording. So I think the differences you're hearing are the natural changes that occur when any piece of music is performed by different musicians. I hesitate to ask, but did you watch the four other clips I posted on this channel?
