  • I've always loved the "Psycho" score, but feel that the soundtrack was poorly recorded. Here is the faithful Danny Elfman stereo CD synched to the film.

One of my favorite parts of the movie is the look that comes over her face when she's thinking about the old rich guy she stole the money from 😀👍

That's my favorite part of this scene too. It's a look that says "Serves you right, asshole". This scene also shows us through her other facial expressions that she has guilt and remorse about what she's done, but that evaporates briefly when she thinks about who she did it to.

A master at work aided and abetted by a brilliant actress and a genius composer, not to mention DOP, lighting experts, crew, musicians. The whole thing is screaming not action or horror but talent, this is an intellectual multilayered analysis of the human psyche wrapped up as a popular film, which is one aspect of why Hitchcock is beloved both by critics and audiences. All that’s happening is an erstwhile decent woman, who broke character and was tempted to steal some cash, is in a car driving off. At any moment she could turn back and probably nothing would be said, or she can drive on. Darkness falls, the weather changes, at the end of this clip it looks like she’ll just pull into a motel and sleep on it. In other hands this whole sequence might be cut entirely, in the master’s it has us gripped, fascinated, focussed and on the edge of our seats.

I prefer the original mono soundtrack. it has a rougher edge to it that matches the black and white film better (in my opinion).

@@jayvanslayer2787 true. she's a poor thief so there's more tenseness with the cop.

Honestly, it’s a good contrast for someone who’s just human yet a terrible liar when doing something they’re not used to vs. someone else who may seem courteous. But there’s something deep, dark and personal inside of them that others will never pick up, immediately 👿

Changing the car is not reasonable because police can trace her by the license plate from her old car and her new one.

Maybe her own panic and fears pushed her to go through with it . The cop didn't seem to think she was a criminal .Just a confused lady , probably

Back then they had a different method of where the liscense plates stayed on the car and you would sign papers to switch registrations. She wanted a car with California plates so that way she couldn’t be tracked because the last car had Arizona plates and she wanted a car that would be legal in her boyfriends state.

to appear like she's done nothing wrong, she just goes right through the deal. I really don't care cause I love this film.

When this policeman discovered her asleep in her 1956 Ford next to the road that morning, she was panicky because she immediately thought he knew she'd stolen the money - which of course he didn't. But while talking to her, her jittery reactions made him look at her driver's license and the license plate on the front of her car. This made her want to switch to another car, one with California license plates instead of her original Arizona ones because she knows that once the theft is reported to the police, her car and license number will be searched for. Once she's at the used car lot, she's still so nervous - and increasingly panicky again, because the same cop is now watching her - that she just blunders through the sales transaction and buys the 1957 Ford even though it's pointless to do so. Once she convinced herself to steal the money when she packed her suitcase back at home, she's now committed to following through on her madness, regardless. She's no longer thinking logically. But she finally comes to her senses after her conversation with Norman at the Bates Motel that night, but then...
