- How does beer affect your low-carb or keto diet?
We drank beer in the name of science to bring you the answer to that question.
What we discovered is that the type of beer (light vs full-bodied) matters.
See the surprising differences that the Michelob Ultra and Yuengling Lager had on our blood glucose and ketone readings.

Personally, I do better without alcohol. I definitely have control issues. Oh well, better to admit it and move on than to fight it and have problems.
Yep...if I drink more than say 2 drinks I'm digging for hidden cheetohs in the pantry! Thank you for testing this!
Melinda Jeffers I’ll be at the nearest convenient store buying chips, dip, and all the snack cakes I can find 🥴😩🤣.
so funny that you “not promoting” drinking alcohol but I certainly have a lite beer now and then and love your suffering for science. 😉
Your Dog is such a cute addition. Thank you for painful testing and sharing!!!
I would like to know how the whisky affect your glucose and ketones, thank you.- happy holidays
Thanks for including Michelob Ultra in this test! My favorite beer.
The best test ever! Thank you!
Beer helps digestion
Love your test kitchen!
What great role models!!!!!!
Love watching your videos, thank you.
Love you two! I also would love to see a video on wines, red and white. Please. I appreciate you both ❤
Another great video thanks you guys.
Great video! Thank you so much for your down-to-earth, but educated information. It's very unique in that instead of recycling content (trying other people's recipes), you are experimenting and creating new info. I also run my own business, so I appreciate the motivation it takes to do this on top of your other jobs. A few ideas for content I had as I was watching - would be interesting in seeing a weekly shopping trip (what you regularly buy), a discussion regarding food aversion (after doing keto for 6 months I am personally sick of avocado), seafood & keto, how much you feel working out had to do with dr. keith's weight loss, keto lunch-on-the-go for those who are busy working during the day and the impact of fasted and maybe non-fasted workouts on ketosis.
You 2 are awesome and my go to ketogenic guru every question I've ever had about ketosis your videos popped up keep up the good work
Thank you very much for the info Docs, it is greatly appreciated. I really enjoy your videos as they are geared for almost anybody. As for the beer, I love Miller Lite and usually have 2-3 on Friday nites after work (usually with wings). I'm taking it from your video that it would be better to have those beers prior to my wings. Please keep it coming and have a Happy New Year!
Thanks so much for being so real!!
Thank you! Happy New Year 🎊
I really appreciate how you apply scientific method and do these test. I am a wine drinker but may have to switch over to low carb beer. Thanks for another great video.
Thank you for the science in this video. My husband and I sit down together before dinner to have our 'happy hour' which is typically a light beer. My husband has no issues with his weight whereas I have. I have just started a Keto diet along w IF and didn't want to give up our ritual of having a drink so your experiment is so encouraging. Thank you.
Excellent video!, thanks guys.
Thank you for doing the hard science!
Seriously though, I was wondering about light beer. Good to know.
Thanks for addressing cravings,I used to get "beer munchies" in my heavy drinking days, balance seems to be the key to pretty much anything worth doing.
The things you do to help us all! Happy New Year. I'll have to replicate the test! There is a big difference in your body masses so we expect differences in processing alcohol.
Hey guys!! The doctors invented a new drinking game!!!!!!
Thank you for the experiment and sharing your results along with all your other videos. I would be curious to know what would happen if you were to drink a shoot of distilled alcohol like vodka. Found it very interesting that Keith's weight loss stalled when he abstained from alcohol and that the both of you have been enjoying a small amount beer before dinner and managed to lose weight and stay in a state of ketosis. Appreciate all the informative videos. Please keep creating them.
I would so appreciate knowing how wine affects ketosis and glucose levels.... I'm a Sauv Blanc girl and my husband is a red wine drinker..... It would be amazing to know. Please let us know if you decide to test!
Love this! You guys are awesome.
Very interesting. Helpful for those who want to consume alcohol. I have to avoid beer because it triggers inflammation in my case. Thank you for sharing your information. You guys are great!
My wife
sue is keto but both beer and wine at times increases her inflammation. Maybe it is the fermentation or yeast.
Not sure what prompted you to create this video, but not only did you just prove something scientifically about beer, but I believe you also just indirectly proved something very significant in regards to alcohol & sugar content in fermented foods/beverages and the effect on ketosis, something I've known intuitively all along but have never scientifically tested. You guys are like Lois & Clark venturing into new keto territory!
Not sure if you'd be willing, but I for one would love to see this same test done using store-bought kombucha, water kefir & milk kefir versus homemade kombucha, water kefir & milk kefir fermented for 7 days. I'd also love to see the results of these same homemade beverages fermented over 7, 10 and 21 days, as this would be a HUGE contribution to everyone who consumes fermented foods on a diabetic & ketogenic diet. Thanks in advance. So grateful for all your public experiments & results!
She always looks at him like a teenage girl at her first crash
I switched to Michelob Ultra Gold and love it.
You're so fun to watch! 😃
Have a good day!
I love one beer with and entire lime and salt.
I drink Ultra beer. Also drink wine. Moderation is key..Thanks guys!
To control for simply carb consumption versus carb+EtOH you need to repeat with same parameters but w a drink that has the same amount of carbs in each beer selection. (A water+sugar drink at 2.5 carbs and one at 13 carbs, neither with EtOH). For the very detailed oriented, add a third test group with water drinks that have no carbs but spiked w the same amount of EtOH as in each beer.
YAY science! Though not a true randomized, double-blind study, your results were nonetheless very informative! Can't wait for the wine study. And the Irish Cream study. And Bloody Mary's can be good sometimes so a vodka study would be wonderful. And there are so many things to celebrate in life, so a Champagne/Prosecco study would also be terrific. Thank you so much for being willing court tasters! :)
I'm sure the requests for different alcohols will come pouring in but I'd love a wine and vodka and soda experiment. Keith you look fabulous (as does Becky) Keto works!!! But you must still live a normal life, crack open a beer and relax. GREAT VIDEO!
Good video! It would be interesting to see the difference if you equalized the calories for the two different beers (i.e., drinking enough of the Ultra to be the same calories as the Yuengling).
Perfect, thanks! 👍👍👍
Love you guys 😍
I wish you would of tested a full body beer Heineken or something equeal in alcohol content...About how long did it take Keith to get back into ketosis? Thanks for another great video
I think the "kitchen lab" is the most important in real life. We are all guinea pigs when it comes to diets as we all have different preferences. Bravo!
You guys are great.
That’s a great experiment. I have been drinking Mic ultra every day with no effects on my ketones. But when I have 2 I noticed a drop.
Very interesting! Thx for testing. Now that I’ve lost 30 pounds I do drink just a few micholob ultra a week. I don’t check my ketones but I’ve maintained my weight so for me it hasn’t affected Ketosis.
I like beer, it makes me a jolly good fellow.
Joking and drinking songs aside, I only drink one beer a month on my cheat day / meal.
Nice work Docs! My after work beer in Australia is lower in carbs than Michelob Ultra but a little higher in alcohol. Pure Blond Ultra Low Carb Carbs 1.7 gms Alcohol 4.2 % Kilojoules 109 On a strict Keto lifestyle it helps a lot when the breweries cater for us low carbers. Agree with others, that doing same test for red and white wines would be great!
Jeremy McLoughlin I love Pure Blonde and miss it when I travel. Yes a wine test would be awesome. I do like a red from time to time but keeping any drinking to minimum these days.
My experience with the Precision Xtra is that, at least for Glucose measurements, there is an approximately 15% plus swing in measurements. On several days I've sample different fingers at the same times and had blood glucose measurements from 97 to 116, and on another day 123 to 137 - again same time, different fingers. Just an FYI if you're looking for "true" changes.
Could you consider testing white wine sometime? I think it’s fairly low in carbs,
Some are, some are not.Dry wines have lower sugar, like chardonnay.
Moscato and Reisling are high carb. 😭
Interesting!👍👍👍 I can have some alcohol and stay in ketosis. Doesn’t matter, wine, light beer, or hard alcohol. (No mixer) Keith’s no beer plateau is pretty funny. Great test. Thanks for posting. 👍👍😎😎
We found that we can enjoy a Mich UL occasionally too. :) Thanks for doing this scientific test!
I enjoy your beer experiments! -- esp. since I do not monitor blood glucose or ketones. Before keto, IPAs were my addiction. Now, after losing about 80 lbs. through 7+ months of keto and then a higher protein modification (daily target = 150 grams) after fat adaption, I cannot drink beer. One bottle of the Ultra Gold I can handle, but a regular Ultra, or anything heavier -- like my beloved IPAs -- and I feel terrible.
BTW, the best thing I did was the modification: dropped vegetables and adopted OSAD, one-steak-a-day. Typically, I reach my protein goal with an evening shake (combining 3-4 proteins). I wish I could show folks the results.
We have a zero carb beer in Australia and its tastes great
Can't remember the last time I had just one beer, LOL. Dr. Keith voice is somewhat low volume here. I was increasing the volume for Dr. K and decreasing for Dr. B. We need a better microphone or a better Dr. K. :-)
I've noticed the same thing in several videos and commented about it once. :-) Might be worth checking if Keith's volume level (microphone gain) can be increased, or if audio can be auto-leveled in "post." Or swap mics for a test? But IMO don't worry too much about the technical stuff as your content is the driving force. Very interesting video, as always!
good video thank you, keto is an amazing diet.
Everything is theory until you do this type of experiment. Really appreciate it
I clicked thumbs up before even watching the video :-).
I would love to have a coffee with Bayleys.....im sure that would knock me out of ketosis for sure 😢
Hi, I’ve only been a subscriber for a few months. I really enjoy your videos. When you say Keith was insulin resistant, does that mean he was type 2 diabetic? Also, how many low carb beers could I get away with drinking and stay in ketosis? Thanks heaps!
Dr. Keith was certainly pre-diabetic if not an undiagnosed type 2.
Wow can’t believe you guys drink beer! Fantastic!
Here is a experiment that I did, but I didn't have any meters with me at the time. I drank 6 Michelob Ultras and ate 3 bratwurst with no other food that day. I was taking one 500mg metformin per day during the time period that I experimented, but decided to skip it during the day of the experiment. I was in ketosis by noon the next day. Not sure if I was knocked out, but I would have been stalled for the period that my liver was dealing with the beer poison. Drinking some beer may not be a great idea, but it can be done without having to do a 48 hr fast to get back in.
Okay before dinner but what about during as the replacement to tea?
I’m a home brewer. I can’t do Michelob or any of those industrial beer-like beverages. 😎 Lost 40 lbs doing keto this year. I normally have a couple beers after work. It’s my reward for not snacking. It’s before a meal, as you described. Seems to work for me, and I’m now making lighter beers, after the holidays at least. Somehow, I don’t think beer is quite as inflammatory or harmful as most simple carbs like bread or pasta. I can definitely still lose weight with beer, if most everything else is healthy whole food - mostly meat and lots of veg.
Well I slowed my drinking down to once on a weekend every seven days want to continue making it longer and longer between having a few drinks and I've noticed on keto that I'm starting to drop weight again quickly if someone says alcohol does not affect keto they are dead wrong I figure with in 4 to 6 months if I stay on this path I will be ripped and have a very low body fat percentage that is my goal at this time and I'm a 53 year old male...
"We'll drink beer in the name of science!" Yep, this has been the opening phrase of several regrettable excursions. Anyway, thanks for testing, but I'm more on the intermittent fasting side of things.
I love my beer... but don’t drink all too often... well, anymore... but given the choice between any light, lite, ultra, etc... I might as well drink water... :-(
It gives me a beer belly. 😁 I love 🍺. Over the holidays I cheated and beer was at the top of my list. Gained 7 lbs not bad but not good. Struggling to get back to Keto.😫
All things in moderation, including moderation... Yeeeeaahhh 🍻! Happier New year. 😂
You don’t mention this but what about multiple drinks? Do you need to be strict with only one drink for women?
I'm curious to see if drinking the Michelob ultra, with a carb free meal...
Makes any difference.
I noticed you're using the Precision Xtra for both ketone and glucose readings...is this one device? Or two?
I want to purchase if can use for both readings. Thank you.
The Precision Extra is one device that uses two different strips. We have it listed on our Amazon Shop page: www.amazon.com/shop/beckygillaspy
Thank you! I'll take a look at your shop.
Interesting experiment. I'm T2 and wear an Abbott Freestyle Libre cgm, and have noticed some significant drops in bgl due to red wine. I'm uncertain if this is due to the alcohol or the resveratrol.
Probably the alcohol. :)
It’s elementary Watson, a couple of beers are good for you!
Happy dance💃I can have an Ultra!
So, this raises the question: is there a keto-friendly alcohol? Highly-distilled voda with soda and a twist of lime?
We will be testing wine and spirits in the near future! :) :) (that's worth 2 smiley faces!)
Mike Larkin -
Gin martini
Thank you.... The words ... Ya about every day... I needed that.. I'm down 60 have 70 to go.. Just tried my first ultra the other day.. I can have two.. Lol cause I'm really tall. 😆
So one beer or two beers at the most a day ?
Can you clarify please? So Dr. Keith had one beer or how many beers every night after work? Just curious. I know everyone is different, but I'd like to experiment with Michelob Ultra as I shy away from it until Saturdays because I'm afraid it will hinder weight loss but if it will help me sleep (during the week), then I'm all for it as I have horrible sleeping problems. :) Thanks for your help!
Dr. Keith might have 2 or 3 a night at times without any negative effects.
@@2FitDocs thank you!!! :)
My drink is a shot of Don Julio or Patron with a Corona back!
I wonder what a gluten free beer like Omission would have different results.
I enjoy your videos. You’re so cute together. Keith’s insulin resistance reduction, perhaps, gives me hope.
Do you enjoy light beer as much as real beer? I'm not a beer drinker but I like the beer like drink Truly.
I call this paralysis through analysis!
Have you done a test on liquors? Like vodka starch based vs say Tequila?
Future fun! Stay tuned!
I like 8 12 oz cans of natural ice every night. Is that gonna cause weight gain? Im serious... thanks
Is the Keto diet based on the karate guy from the Green Hornet show?
This simply proves what we all knew in the first place; Michelob Ultra is not really beer.
LOL! 😀
Good! Because I drink Michelob Ultra...
and now I know I'm not a beer drinker!
1 beer only for the test ??
What about red wine
Hi Doris! You should stay tuned! We plan to start testing wine very soon! :)
LOL! All in the name of SCIENCE!!😊😊😊
When I was buying Michelob Ultra the other day, I was talking to the cashier, he said he was on keto too, had lost 100 lbs and kept it off for 3 years which gave me hope. But he said a friend his drank a low carb beer everyday and lost more weight when doing so, my problem is I have a hard time just having 1 or 2, but if it will help me lose weight it's worth trying.
Wouldn’t a drop in glucose be considered a good Thing?
It's a good thing within reason but can be dangerous for diabetics.
This has nothing to do with beer, but thought I would ask anyway. Here are a couple questions that I'm certain, many other people would like to know the answer to. I take supplements B1, B12, omega3, tumeric, berberine, magnesium, potassium, B complex, D3, K, zinc, coq10, grape seed extract, apple cider vinegar, probiotic, cayenne, garlic oil and a Multi Vitamin. If I went to look at the bottles, there are probably some that I forgot to mention. #1- Does taking all of these suppliments together, cause a ineffectiveness of some of them? It seems that if they hit the system close together, they would turn into a concoction of who knows what. With the cost of supplements, I'm hardly able to afford my one meal a day. #2- Will the Multi Vitamin be good enough to not need to take most of these suppliments? I've always questioned the effectiveness of multi vitamins. Mostly due to finding it hard to believe that there is enough of the different vitamins in them to be in one pill.
Just like many medications, there can be interactions between different supplements but since they are typically derived from natural compounds, the chances are slim that you'll have any issues. I tend to spread my supplementation out over the day.
@@2FitDocs I spread them out to a extent. I take the ones that are gel tabs during my meal since they tend to have a not so great oil in them. If they cause a insulin rise, they can do it when it's rising from the meal. I sure wish I could get a answer about the effectiveness of multi vitamins. Nobody has ever seemed to want to answer that. Maybe because they sell their own brand of multivitamins. Best that I remember, you all sell coffee cups. Thanks for your response, much appreciated.
Love your videos and that ya have to sacrifice so much to make these video's...😉
Vodka!!
We'll be testing it in the future!
1 beer. What on Earth did you expect?
Cant wait for yalls video after yall do a couple shots of tequila ;)
Ok now test vodka with diet tonic water and lime juice..please. Beer is ick 😋
i dont understand how you plateaued if you gave up drinking? shouldnt you be losing weight?
Don't you think you need to check a wider variety? Guiness, Bud Light, Corona, Stella …… Enjoyed this important video.
Two fit doc's get wasted...AWESOME!
LOL! :)
Crank up the intro to 1.5 speed its groovy
