Great tips. I will try them on mine
Thank you John. Awesome info
Looks great to me!!
I like to give my bees venting they will close what they want closed and keep open what they like.
Thanks for sharing your experiences and changes to your long hive.👍
It’s amazing how much I think I know about nature, they show me I don’t. Love what you do and always remember, as long as we gain knowledge it’s a win. ♥️👍🏼
Flexible inner covers make the entire top a vent. They are cheaper and easier to use, as well. I use pet screen on mine.
Well done.
I can tell you from experience, and now science is saying the same thing, that bees have repeatedly shown us they don’t want extra ventilation. A small, three inch bottom opening seems to be the perfect opening for hive ventilation all year round.
Anything more is adding stressors to the hive.
One of the best tools I’ve recently discovered to help the hive have complete control over the hives temps and humidity levels year round is the HiveGates. Thx for the video.
My bees are on one side of the hive. I remove the cover boards on the opposite side of the divider board so air can vent through the other entrance that the bees don’t use. I have screened vents in the cover boards over the bees. Plus vents in the sides of the roof.
I really appreciate all the work you are putting into this hive. I am beginning to think about how aging will affected my ability to do things like this and a working long hive could save a lot of lifting effort.
I’d be curious to know the benefits or reasoning to go with a box like this vs the standard type we see. I’m not enlightened to any of this but I appreciate your videos and your trade, it’s important I believe. It’s fascinating to watch!
I built a long hive a year ago , put bees in for an older couple. I take care of bees .1 entrance to the left side and no ventilation. They seem to be doing ,although haven't gone through a winter.
Bees propylised the vents on my inner covers here in Centerville. They didn’t do it to the side vents though. Kenny and I built with 6” porch openings though. No center opening. Only the ends have porches.
Amazing that in this heat, they sealed up the vents. Does this hive have any insulation? Have you ever sandwiched R-21 bubble foil between a double walled hive to see if the bees like it? I have a metal box trailer and had 1 inch styrofoam sheet insulation inside and I roasted in the Arkansas heat. I ripped it out and used a single layer of R-21 bubble foil from Lowes and it really helped regulate the temperature in the trailer in summer and winter. I always wondered how well it would work on hives?
do you have any screen covered vent holes on the bottom of the longhive
I do not have vents in the bottom. Only ends and back wall up high.
Thanks the the question.

Do you have any vents on the bottom of the hive ?
I do not have vents or screen in the bottom.
thanks for watching
I talked with you this morning about splitting a hive and or buying a nuc. I am 66. Sure hope the long hive is working. My older back has seen a lot of wear. A long hive seems like it would help with the wear. Did long hive make the winter?
It did not, after they requeened in October they were robbed out before she could get the colony strong enough to fight off the attack.
