Nice job finishing up corn harvest. Today (October 7) in Iowa, i am halfway done with corn. I finished soybeans last Tuesday. Whats surprising all of us around here this fall is how dry the corn is. Much of it is coming out at 13-15 %. Crazy year but the yields for both crops have been average to a little above average.
Howdy Matt, Kelly, Andy, I hope ya'll are enjoying a relaxing evening, Ya I enjoyed watching ya'll harvest corn for 2024, was another interesting year of corn, from the breakdowns, to some surprising yields, here's hoping soybeans and cotton harvest goes even better, Stay safe ya'll, God Bless and Farm on my Friends
I'm sure your soil health journey will help you with compaction over time . Last year, I ran an inline ripper over some sandy areas of the field that seemed to help this season, but this fall, I checked with the penitrometer and the soils tight already. This is my third year of multi species covers.
Seed consultants and Augusta seed are strong companies. Hybrid 85 is probably the most resonable ive seen. That ripper with the cover crops will be a winning combination. Open her up and fill it with root structure after.
seed companies labs, paperwork, and test plots are perfect world scenarios, some of them even run drip lines in their test plots to show full potential of the seed but that once again a perfect world they aren’t stressing it. so in all reality 300 plus dollar bag of seed is really worth 100 bucks because in real world it’s worthless, salespeople can talk up their seed all they want but its junk.
How has your yield been so far this fall 2024? Initiatives including waving (canceling) property taxes for farmers that own less than 1,000 acres should be put in place; this would decrease inputs and there fore help with their overhead. This must be instituted as small farmers (defined as anything less than 1,000 acres totals) will be struggling this year to turn a profit, most corn farmers are looking a $1.00 per acre loss this year, extremely tragic. How are you fairing / projected to fair after all inputs? Curious what your net profit per acre will be this year. Thank you for what you do!! -October 13, 2024
I've seen a couple videos of where Joyce Brothers Farms is trying canola for harvest next year. Maybe something to consider to put in your crop rotation?
With the soil structure you have if I was farming your land I would come in and heavy disc it then come through with bottom plows then in the spring disc it again and every five years it starts over again you have a good soil structure but it needs to break down underneath the ground roots don’t do anything on top of the ground
That would absolutely destroy my soil structure and organic matter I’ve built over the years. Not to mention send tons of topsoil into the Mississippi River
It drives me nuts also that as soon as yiu get a hybrid figured out, they discontinue it. Im going through that right now with Kruger 11-60. Have you ever planted DeKalb 59-82? Its been my best for 4 years in a row. Im not sure if that hybrid works in your territory or not.
59-82 is what I was cutting the first couple of corn harvest videos. First year trying it. It yielded great in the bottoms but suffered a lot from drought on the hills. Tough to get a good read on it. There’s plenty of varieties that yield great on the good soil, but very few have much top end AND are reliable on tough ground. Pioneer 0912 was the last one I could trust on thin ground
@@griggsfarmsllc I know what you mean. The last hybrid I had that worked well on all soils and in dry conditions was DK 62-97. Of course they canned that after everyone figured out where it worked lol.
I tell y'all what this ol boy in that 7120 been took to farmin school by his old man or grandpappy cause he's a tellin y'all really how it is out in them fields
cant complain about getting to corn with pricess rip rip rip these co are ripping off the american farmer glad im retired if i was still in game i would be looking for some different i used to rip 2 passes next to trees went down 24in 2 times brougt up 3/4 in roots also you could find somebody with a mowerr on a trackhoe go around those little fields that would help i did it 1 yr with chainsaw me in loader bucket really helped
Another great video Matt, happy it's done and done on the corn harvest. Hope and pray this second hurricane don't get up your way, looks as if it's gonna be a real ripper.
It’s going to weaken before hitting Florida. Then scoot back out over open water and disappear. Hopefully the last one. We here is South Georgia need a brake! 😂
Very nice numbers for a drought year! Wish I could say mine was anywhere near that. Can’t wait to see the cotton/soybeans.

Congrats!
Watch your test weights we find the Dekalb has alot heavier test weights than the pioneer
You are so right!!! Something has to give regarding high cost to just maintain!

It’s a process for sure

Overall decent yields for a dry year, glad to see corn harvest in your rear view mirror.
Great job Andy, explaining what and why you were doing all that at the bin site.
Great job ,and congrats well done ,looking forward to see you harvesting soybean and cotton
God bless, hope all goes your way!
Would love to see a cropland variety in the planter next year.
Awesome Video and Much Love as Always!!!
Idk if you watch Clarke farms, but they just posted a video, their 8230 caught fire and is a loss.
Totally agree with the soil health idea! And sorry for your Arkansas loss...Gators should be a W and hope ya'll beat Bama!

I agree with you on cost it’s getting out of hand they are driving the small guy out of business

Good thing yall did get it all out theres a bunch of hurricanes building up in the gulf
We always roll with the punches don't we😢
I've seen a couple videos of where Joyce Brothers Farms is trying canola for harvest next year. Maybe something to consider to put in your crop rotation?
I am unable to due to current rotation and commitments in EQIP for cover crops
Pioneer 1870 was our best corn for years but my brother 5 miles away never had good luck with it who knows
We still used 1870 for our long season refuge this year. Been one of my favorites
cant wait for cotton!
You mention pioneer 4614, I wonder if it's comparable to becks 6414. It's been around and always solid
Matt get you some y drops, it will change your corn growing game. Banded fertility. I can grow 280 on 140lbs N probably less
How old the is grain bin site love the videos keep up the good work
Built in 2011
Be careful there. If you trim back the trees for the landlord they might increase the rents since the property is incrementally more valuable.
It’s on share rent so if I make more crop, they make more money
@@griggsfarmsllc Glad to hear that.
I think Ivers farms likes that pioneer 1464 also.

What kind of drone do you have and how long does the battery last ?
DJI Mavic 3 Pro. 30-35 minutes
Maybe pull a corn stalk out of the ground and check for nematodes
Our ground has been tested for nematodes

From a uga fan I know how you feel after the Arkansas game😂
It was a rough night
How many year do you drive this combine harvester?
On our 8th year with this one
@@griggsfarmsllc oh, it is long time
Are you not going try any canola
I am unable to due to current rotation and commitments in EQIP for cover crops
Becks 6585 I think was $406 a bag
😳
Why couldn’t you plant the seed you are harvesting now? Is it a GMO thing?
Because it is a hybrid it won’t pollinate correctly. Need male and female plants. Also it’s illegal due to being GMO
If its not broke don't fix it
The title has the year as 2023, I bet you meant to put 24.
Thanks. I uploaded it at 10:30 last night when I could barely keep my eyes open…

Unfortunately it will be hitting my family’s condo yet again on Ft Myers Beach. We have family in the path of this monster. Its very very unsettling.
Save some for seed
cant save it cross bred wont work
It’s also illegal to save GMO seed
