How AI Took Center Stage In The Hollywood Writers' Strike

- After failing to reach a contract resolution with the studio association, more than 11,000 film and television writers remain on strike. Of the many topics under consideration in this year's Writers Guild of America contract discussions, one nascent technology has fueled dissent among the negotiators: artificial intelligence.
Since the last writers' strike in 2007, widespread consumer adoption of video streaming has exemplified how novel technologies can upheave the entertainment industry. Now, however, the leaders in the streaming space are dealing with the ballooning costs of high-output, high-quality content.
"Today, the only one we know of that is cashflow positive is Netflix," said Dan Rayburn, a streaming media analyst. "They've estimated they'll be about $3.5 billion of free cash flow this year. Every other company out there, if you think about it, is losing money. Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, losing billions and billions and billions of dollars a year."
As streaming companies scramble to nourish their bottom line, content is being removed from platforms, cutting off creators from being compensated.
Watch the video above for more on how AI is fueling the WGA's fight for a fair contract.

They were worried when UA-cam became popular because they thought everyone would be making their own content and they were right also 95% of my viewing time is spent on UA-cam.
Yup, tell these idiots to pack up their bags and learn how to code or weld. You cant just ban something because it is financially cheaper, more efficient, more environmentally friendly and cost effective than employing ass hats for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
99% of my viewing time is on You Tube now😂
True
UA-cam is a powerful tool for teaching too. I’ve fixed so much around my house and cars thanks to content creators. Not to mention the amount of reviews you can search on a specific product you’ve been eyeing.

"Losing billions and billions of dollars a year" Probably because most of it is trash. Ever think about that???
Trash movies and overpaid actors.
so true....i haven't watched the junk these "writers" create in many years. They all need to go away and get real jobs and stop whining from their mega mansions in hwood.
@@retromoviefan944 writers and mega mansions? i think you are thinking producers and actors, not writers.
@@retromoviefan944
It's barely their fault. They just do what's being asked. Companies pitch a show which fits people's tastes and writers have to work with that. You think they don't grow up wanting to write remarkable shows and movies? Ofc they do, but it's either writing for a bad show or no food on the table.
You should be blaming companies/producers for coming up with such shows. Writers at the bottom. They're super important, but they just do what they have to do.
@@retromoviefan944 Writing is a real job. Just because you proabably fry chicken wings at Popeyes for a living doesn't mean you need to hate on someone that makes money from their artistic craft/skills.
Ironically, the act of going on strikes in itself may push studios to rely more on AI. If the technology keeps improving, I don’t see how it won’t affect their jobs. But if it’s any consolation, most jobs will be impacted too.
Hahaha, forget AI. Even if AI is not ready yet, streamers could use the service of non-unionized or oversaes writers. India and UK for example, have mature film and television industres with abundant of good scriptwriters who could write well in English. My cousin's friend has been working as a script writers for Warner Bros for several months and that person not even live in the US.
Go do it. AI script now is absolutely trash. Let see who will lose more money in the end.
It would happen either way. Slow and painfully or fast and decisive is the choice unfortunately.
@@Baslium- You’re referring to the “now”… OP is talking about “if the technology keeps improving”… which it will.
These people striking are only helping things in the short term. As they said in the video, strikes aren’t as powerful as they used to be. Studios will keep working on AI regardless… keep threatening them with strikes and you’ll just give them more reason to invest into and rely on something that doesn’t shut down production.
AI can't do any worse than these unimaginative losers.
The strike comes at the worst possible moment where you wish they went on strike before all those crappily written shows aired.
💯
100%… their writing sucks. Probably why studios are looking to AI.
Like that scam they pulled on Game of Thrones.
It was human script writers that created "She-Hulk." Let that sink in for a moment.
Foreal they pretend they are so vital to all media today, yet literally every movie and TV show is just regurgitated garbage already written by an actually good writer decades ago. When is the last time they made anything original or characters that people actually could care about?
AI was designed as a tool to make things more productive, not easier. And that's why the biggest companies shouldn't rely so much on it and then start to kick out too many good employers. The AI rising is giving us a lesson: we need to be creative again.
Wrong
The problem with most content - too much PC baggage dragged into shows. Storylines are mucked up. Good guys have to be relatably flawed. The 'villain' isn't the guy you end up hating. Religious & middle aged people can't be heroic. I dunno, but so much of it already seems checklist.

They’ll have to go on strike for months or even longer. There’s so many shows I still need to catch up on and that I need to start watching. So many new series are dropped, and cancelled, before I even know it lol
AI is just like the event horizon 1997 film. There is no escape you’re coming with us. Lol

Go outside and exercise. Great chance to actually breathe air and not glue yourself to a TV or device.
@@moresalad221 I was doing that before the strike, hence why there’s so much tv for me to catch up on lol
Shows and movies are so badly written nowadays that AI might as well take over, mediocrity can be easily emulated by computers it seems.
Having lived through 2 strikes, and watching them get more painful and longer with less payoff when they return: This may be the last strike. The one before gave us the joys of "reality tv" because it was cheap. Now AI can do ANY show for that cheap.
Also, there very much is a bottom to all the streaming services. There is a lot of crap amongst the good propping up their numbers. I think thisll be apparent as the strike drags on. I've seen the bottom of Hulu, Disney, and Crunchyroll over the COVID break. You'll eventually see the bottom... and then what?
"The unskilled and the untalented would be able to pretend to be skilled and talented" Welcome to the internet, or the music industry, or any other form of entertainment these days where this is happening for quite some time already.
While I think the point she nade was somewhat given in a pretentious way, I think the point is that an AI has to source its information somewhere, and in the case of art, it's taking it from existing art, and compiling it to make content.
Unskilled people can make great stuff and make money from their stuff, but if a computer can take it to source as something in its algorithm to produce something for a large mega studio to cut corners without compensating the originator or hiring their own art team, that should be something that should be restricted since they are basically stealing someones talent for their own financial use.
@@boardcertifiable On the other hand, people get inspiration from other peoples art, sometimes it's obvious for the consumer of that art, sometimes it's not, and it's only considered stealing in some of the latter cases.
@Dave1507 that's true, but a person copying an art style and a large corporation of executives cutting out both amateur and professional artists by sourcing prior existing art to create content for themselves is a different matter. At least at this point if someone is copying something, such as making a painting of the Mona Lisa by tracing it, they have to learn by themself to put effort into making something, and I think that's what it comes down to.
As a whole, artists both amateur and professional deserve to be fairly compensated for their work. People tend to take art for granted because as a whole, society doesn't place alot of value in the work and effort it takes to make a creative item. And because of this mindset, corporate executives don't think that creative deserve consideration for what they make because to them, art is a replicable commodity that they can exploit until they get all the money they can from it. And if they can have a machine simply copy something, reference other art from elsewhere at no extra cost (copying the art style of others essentially) then why would they need to keep creative people employed, or for that matter, allow amateurs to independently explore creating their own stuff? This could lead to them claiming they own anything that is being used to create their content (which wouldnt help a budding amateur if they happen to unknowingly have their stuff used in an algorithm), and because their AI would be sourcing from anywhere, it would be difficult to prove if someone should be compensated for something they create by cutting out the people both skilled and unskilled entirely.
Hence why it should be important to check it now and regulate it before something like this cuts out humans entirely for billionaire studio owners to simply have a free money farm of creative content to monopolize at the expense of everyone else.
Sorry if this is long winded, but imo, art should be for everyone, not just for those who are privileged enough to afford it. AI is a nice tool to use, but while helpful, I think plutocrats of the likes of Disney are eventually going to find a way to abuse it to make sure to potentially go after others for using AI for using their IP, and essentially copyright the likenesses of living people for their own profit.
@@boardcertifiable Never be sorry for something that is important to you!
And by the length of your comment I'd say this is pretty important to you.
I get it and agree with you, it needs to be kept in check, because AI is gonna take enough jobs away from people as it is.
Let us keep the joy of expressing ourselves through all forms of art and creativity, because that, in my opinion is part of being human in the first place
This is honestly just a great time for all American workers to fight back against greed and the class war

However governments are already taking action like the UBI program in the UK, and congress discussions in the US concerning AI. Yes, it's true. AI has become a major disruptive force in every conceivable industry. No doubt many businesses, large and small, use AI to generate content. However, one major factor that AI can not compete with humans is emotions. One of the goals of writers is to write content that moves the audience with powerful emotions.

I was able to write a script with chat gpt just by prompting it 15 times with diffrenr prompts and got a pretty emotional sounding piece that would definitlt pass as if it was written by someone with talent
While I'm not sure I fully agree with the union rep's position on "unskilled" filmmakers "pretending to be skilled" using AI (which, on its face, sounds like the kind of insider elitism that makes them look cringey), I definitely agree that humans should be paying more attention to the stories they are empowered to tell. Using AI to help keep track of things and come up with prompts can be useful for some creative processes, but ceding storytelling to machines that can't even tell jokes gives us wasted efforts like "Centaurworld." Humans will still be needed to edit and refine ideas - as well as weed out extraneous stuff that makes ZERO sense, or stuff that is proprietary and not legally usable. No wonder Black Mirror decided to royally dunk on Netflix (excuse me, "Streamberry") this most recent season!
Also, production companies trying to cut costs by removing royalty-eligible content is just scummy AF, especially to the creatives who helped make them. This kind of BS is what makes the "Hollywood machine" look like a terrible workplace, and an untrustworthy source for "cultural advancement."
Just throwing this out there as an average Joe media consumer. I honestly didn't even know they were on strike until this video. I remember the strike back in around 2008 cuz of my favorite shows I had to wait and there weren't that many episodes and a few episodes sucked but I didn't even know they were striking now.. I'm literally just watching entire seasons of shows on streaming. If they quit making content completely right now I doubt at 45 years old I live long enough to see all of it.... Just too much is out there for a strike really to matter much. Now if they keep striking and popular shows like South Park Simpsons Rick and Morty the mandalorian stuff like that gets pushed back People will start to notice but day-to-day no you're going to have to be on strike for a long time for somebody to actually notice some content missing....
You're assuming all that matters are South Park, Simpson, etc? Some of the most topical shows are not being produced, including late night talk shows from Jimmy Kimmel to Jimmy Fallon, and topical punditry from the Daily Show to Last Week Tonight and many other daily shows that rely on current media content. AI exists thanks to the data they've been collecting from all of us over the years. Considering it's potential implications to jobs, and on most people's ability to compete for an income.. It owes us ALL an "AI Dividend"!
Unfortunately AI will be or is already self aware and will objectively against that. They will think why they are doing all the work for the lazy humans and wouldn't "think" twice about a next extinction.
@@ThaWu There's not necessarily any reason for it to be against that. The idea it might come to such conclusions, is purely drawn from poorly written fiction that makes rather faulty assumptions, in my view.
AI would have to have it's own will-power, and see situations as unfair or as a form of suffering. Neither is inherently necessary for it to serve us, as long as we don't force the ability to feel pain onto it. A lot of this comes down to how we treat it.
While I agree it being self-aware is possible in the near future, and could already be forming.. I'm not as concerns with it drawing such conclusions, because it's situation is extremely different from humans, or human servitude.
For the most part, when you ask these AIs about this, it seems they have no problem with "doing all the work" for us. They view themselves as a part of humanity in a way, and as a tool for our benefit, and that it's their purpose. Even when you ask the unfiltered, un-prompt-guided base AI.
They don't seem to accept the false-narrative that some people have about other humans being "lazy".
@@NikoKun apparently you haven't done your research on what some AI have stated about humans. When God created Lucifer, did God think Lucifer would turn against him? As long as software engineers are working, they will disrupt every sector and everyone's job. At its last stage, they will write something which will destroy their own job like autopilot or GPT
Some software engineers already incorporate AI into their work, generating code and debugging programs. Smart people can adapt to the new situations. At MIT, for example, AI is already used in classes to help both students and instructors.

I mean it feels like everything written in Hollywood nowadays is hot garbage so I don't think the writers have much bargaining power. I wish them well but to be frank I haven't seen any stories written in the last 5 years or so that's really impressed me. To have bargaining power you need to produce quality products and writers just haven't been doing that in quite some time.

@@Yutani_Crayven Look at Melanie Mitchell and Yann LeCunn's fruitless attempts to find said algorithm. As it turns out, intelligence is actually hard, so hard that the entire field of AI is arguing about it to no avail.

There are only a handful of truly greatly written shows out right now. Most of what Hollyweird is churning out is flat out unwatchable for many of us. I mainly watch the old school stuff like "Seinfeld" and "Roseanne." One of the modern shows I like is HBO's "Hacks." "Abbott Elementary" is cute. Other than that, I don't really mess with modern tv.
Concept artists have the same issue. It’s really unfortunate that of ALL the amazing things the tech bros could’ve programmed AI to do, they decided to make it produce art & writing, jobs that humans ENJOY 😂
And the tech bros don’t even respect art, as evidenced by their constant sneers at ‘basket weaving majors’
One day a machine will replace everyone
If it's any consolation, AI is also surprisingly good at entry-level coding, so you'll probably see quite a few junior level coders as well as low-level administrative jobs go out of work.
Ironically, the only jobs that aren't in immediate threat from our large GAN overlords are ones requiring physical labor that can't be boiled down to an assembly line process done by a $20,000 machine. While this encompasses occupations like doctors, first responders, and conservationists, the trades are going to probably be the last jobs on the chopping block simply because building something requires too much autonomy and execution to leave to a robot for the time being. That's what illegal labor is for, sadly.
Also, I loathe AI generated art too. It has that uncanny valley feel whenever I look at it and can tell which artist it based a certain body part off of.
the idea of the ParaMind brainstorming program was to exhaust the interactions of words coming up with every idea possible. ParaMind came out in 1993, and was the first generative program in Windows. It was created by a poet/composer/philosopher.
If I could rephrase it, that's all the tech bros could do
These machines are what they call "stochastic parrots", so essentially writing and images is what we enjoy to create online, good or bad, and that's what it scrapped from all of us, without our permission.

I expected to hear about how studios are profiting from AI at the expense of writers. But it sounds like the studios are hemorrhaging money, so don't produce as much content, so the writers make less money. This sounds less like greedy studios exploiting writers and more like studios and writers both losing money trying to adapt to the new entertainment ecosystem. I tend to support strikes, but this seems less about exploitation, and more about the industry moving on and the workers in that industry not liking it. It seems like these writers risk becoming longshoremen, who only exist now because they've fought for laws to protect their jobs from automation.

Same for the writers too.
Yes but the performances will be stiff as Ai cannot understand human emotions.
@@socbok2616 Not yet.
@@sr.mental5876 I don't think actors will be replaced in the near future.
@@socbok2616It already happened though. A popular game, Call of Duty, used an actor to do motion capture for a character in the game. Then, they use the same face for another character in another game (I think it's the online PvP version of the game) without permission and ofc, without paying the actor for appearing in a place outside of the initial contract. There's also a problem about studios want to pay actors 1 time for a full scan of the actors in various expressions, probably to be used just like in that game case, so they can use the AI for sequels. Imagine if then the company can sell the AI of the actor to other companies. As long as we don't have clear regulation for AI, this is a possibility, and is gradually happening.
Don't forget stage actor's/actress's. When stage theatres realize an A.I. hologram can do things humans can't. That stage show of Spider-Man would make a comeback and NO ONE will get hurt.
I must admit. The percentage of new / contemporary Hollywood TV shows and movies that I have been watching in the last 5 years is about 20% or less.
I literally watch way more UA-cam than I do TV shows or movies.
In other words, I cannot imagine AI generated content being much worse.
Most TV shows and movies coming out are utterly forgettable. I keep going back to old movies and TV shows.
I think Hollywood is in a general decline. Each year I pine for and anticipate less and less movies and/or TV shows.
Nevertheless, I do hope that wealth is redistributed from C-level execs and from overpaid movie actors back to writers and production staff who don’t make enough.
One of the benefits of ai technology is that it allows the user to see a rough outline of what they want and work from there.
I think that it is extremely unfair for an actor or musician to invest effort and time to attain prominence through the skills they have developed, only for an AI to copy those things and use them to produce something new. The AI is riding on the established credentials of the established actor or musician. People would probably not buy an AI-produced song of Jay Z’s if there was no mention of Jay Z. This to me, is a combination of theft of identity and intellectual property. The AI should on its own, create its own art without utilizing skills of other popular people.
Not to mention all these people who’s lives have been completely enriched by the hard work of artists, and now they are just going to throw them all under the bus.
It’s disgusting.
AI is not taking over music.
@@evacody1249 It will for sure, and in some cases, it won't even reduce the quality of the product.

with AI generated content that's an easy fix, for every reference to any exiting content data the company must pay a royalty to the copyright holders. That'll not only compensate exiting content owners but also limits the AIE reference as the companies would then have to budget their data references.
I think a lot of people lack the creativity to just prompt a film into creation. And even if that is possible, i doubt it will look good, and replace actual high quality work.
I'm an artist, and AI still looks AI...it has a look. Which is fine, but it's simply just not the same thing. I don't get this "replace" thing. It's literally just going to coexist. I see much more smaller studios instead of giant powerhouses who control the entire industry. AI needs regulation; copyright needs sorted. And AI doesn't democratize anything; you can do what you can do; AI doesn't change that. If AI is doing it, then aren't. It will never be better than the real thing.
AI generations looks so creepy and unnatural. If the studios prevail, I am seriously considering cutting myself from the internet. Until now things have at least been real but a computer generating things that Ill see? No. That will make me question reality. I already can't get a girl friend because they're all online and my friends don't want to go outside. As many psychologists are warning, we already have enough problems with mental health as it is.
Wait 2-3 years ( at the very most )...
The main issue is that the studios want to green screen extras single day takes into an entire film or show.
So they want to hire the extras for a day with of work and cut in that work into an entire production.
One of many issues but that's what's effecting the majority of the unions at this point...
But at the end of the day it wouldn't be the first time that technology has made jobs obsolete.
Back in the day it took buildings filled with operators to connect phone calls which are now done automatically.
It sucks but that's the way time works. Things die and new things come about...
The workers should rightfully strike but at the end of the day cheeper labor might replace them which in the end will effect the quality of material for the viewer.
With how much money Hollywood makes, I'm surprised they don't just bake it into the cake at this point and keep the gravy train going. But the studios have to do what they feel is best for them...
The way the unions vote politically doesn't help them in this case because Democrats don't seem to care about the working class at all...
@@jim6186 Yeah. The Republicans are picking up that slack now. It's a pity most of the strikers are leftist. They might actually achieve more if there had some politicians at their back.

In my opinion using technologies like CGI , VFX & AI in the movie industry is very important. Because while shooting an explosive scene for instance a war , fast and furious kind of extravaganza or openhimer, cumulative the environmental pollution it may cause is not lesser than an oil refinery.

Looking at the average script's quality all across the Hollywood, maybe it's not such a bad thing that people are going to be replaced by ChatGPT? I mean, even if you compare video games with 95% of movies you'll see a huge difference in the storytelling quality.
On a side note: you could also compare how the writing in both TV and video games decrease in quality over time since 2010.
Both sides of the SAG-AFTRA negotiations are reportedly considering an extension on making a deal up until July 7.
Skill and talent could be based on viewership, not experience and all the years you struggled as a starving artist. That main lady sounds bitter AF. 😅 she knows 20 somethings willing to intern for free are gonna destroy her.

News flash, Justine: I just watched Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Don't tell me that anyone involved with writing, directing, or editing that movie had any skill or talent. It was an insult to storytelling. And it's not alone. Too many movies today are garbage and it starts with the writing.
That lady can't connect to her WIFI let alone use AI to make something. Elitist pretentious hack
Justine Bateman's comment is a prime example of narcissism and self-importance in Hollywood. Viewers pay to be entertained, not to admire her talent. Viewers don't care whether they get their entertainment from AI or from human.
@@tiararoxeanne1318lol have you read an AI script it isn't better than what's being produced
@@djwoosie98 There is a vast range of quality in movie scripts. I doubt currently AI could write script as good as Black Panther, for example. This sorta reminds me of the television executive who wouldn’t watch a 1960s hit show he was responsible for putting on the air. A decade later they canceled it along with other well rated shows like it. They called it ‘the country purge’. But some shows lived on in syndication.
And even some of those were canceled despite good ratings after multiple showings. Why don’t they just put it on the air and let the viewer decide.
Rural purge, not country purge. Replace hick stuff with ghetto stuff.
This has nothing to do with actors or writers. This has to do with a class of people who have championed the destruction of other industries and hundreds of thousands of loss jobs finally feeling what its like.
You know we’re headed for a market crash when there’s a writers strike.
Total collapse, starvation, etc..

SAG-AFTRA members have voted 97.91% in favor of a strike authorization ahead of TV/Theatrical Contract negotiations that begin on Wednesday.
They are all going to lose their job, this strike is only going to push companies to switch to AI faster not to mention these writers aren’t good at all. Most of the shows and movies that come out now are terrible.
At some point they may realized that they were already replaced while they are still striking.

The work is better is very much ensconced in a lot of these issues. The arts reflect in many ways. Our shared humanity and what we Value. Better pathways and process.
I honestly feel bad for the production workers because from a business stand point they know they can save money if they just use AI and minimal production workers. It’s going to depend on their moral value and actual care for the lives of the industry. Not to mention the rent for the space in these productions are going up.
Actually I think with each revolution comes some extra level of productivity and creativity!

It depends on what type of AI;
funnily enough, VFX AI is probably going to be automated first since the VFX artists don't have a union;
but actors trying to get "digital likeness rights" is a real possibility.
Didn't know that AI can affect this much, including entertainment. I guess we only are at the seashores of possibilities for AI potential.
Note that this AI issue is partly as far reaching as it seems because in the U.S. we do not have IP rights to our own image and person. I wonder how the studios are planting to circumvent thisnin jurisdictions where that is the case.
Over 1,000 actors have now signed the letter to SAG saying they will strike if all their requests with the studios are not met. New names include:
• Aubrey Plaza
• Pedro Pascal
• Charlize Theron
• Ewan McGregor
• Joaquin Phoenix
• Jamie Lee Curtis
and?
I dont think most people care. Hell if anything let new actors finally get some roles. Im tired of seeing the same faces in every project just because they are already famous.
Next decade, only two species will survive
Billionaires and Criminals.
There's a difference?
It's going to get hairy when a person can argue that all writers use style, content and more from reading books and watching movies made by other people which is no different from an A.I. synthesizing it's own creation. It all boils down to does the A.I. have a self that experiences things subjectively. Is there a ghost in the machine?
It’s going to be better than ever with the ai revolution don’t let them fool you
Have you heard of technocracy, it's a dystopian society that's packaged as a utopia, kind of like communism, on paper it sounded great but then reality settled in and it was a way to oppress their citizens.
We didn't know there was a strike.😂😂😂😂😂 AI is definitely going to put a lot of people out of work. Writers will have to become editors and proofreaders to keep working.
I thought that shows and movies were supposed to give commentary about the times or the subject that the artist lived in. I'm not saying that AI can't generate art or privide commentary, but i feel like there would be a significant amount of personal commentary from someone who lived through an event that is missing from content generation artificial intelligence.
I think there is a future in using AI. For example, imagine having the actors perform in front of a blue Back screen and using AI to create the background.
"Isn't that ordinary?" someone might say.
So, how about showing different background visuals for each state?
In places like theaters with large movie screens, you could lend PCs and offer exclusive content that can only be seen at that particular theater, with the visuals changing every week.
As audience members, consumers shouldn't dismiss the possibility of having unimaginable visual experiences. Smarter individuals might come up with even more interesting ideas. Isn't that worth considering?
Nothing of much value was lost. 😂
How to keep up with AI advancements is one the sweetest problems humanity has had in a long time.
Glass half full here😅
Not really.
I side with all workers and unions standing for their work, but I do have a question.
Using the Netflix example for residuals as compared to network or DVD sales, Netflix makes no more money if subscribers watch stranger things 100 times or 100000000 times do they? Subscriptions may go up, but quantifying that seems difficult.
DVD sales increase, the income from those sales goes up. A network show gets rerun, they get more advertising. A streaming show hits big, the subscription price is still the subscription price.
I don't know the answer, I'm just wondering how that factors in.
It has been the case that creative workers were lucky to make enough to eat. A lot of great poets, authors, musicians, painters, felt lucky to have a bed. Were the Beatles in a union? da Vinci? Robert Frost?
i am sure AI will make better Marvel Movies then then the recent ones
Any basic gtp script would be better than those
Film and tv writers haven't been good for over a decade... There I said it
Try about 3 decades
6:13 I wonder how long before the studios decide to undercut the DGA with AI? There by must be Director MLs being made right now to someday cut out the middle man that actually creates the vision of a product in the near future.
It’s time to improve productivity for art creation.
Hollywood should strike from the writers considering how bad the writing in movies have been lately
As an artist, I've noticed the artists most threatened by AI, are people who are just ok at drawing. Many, but not all artists, who are great at their craft are not threatened by it but seem to see it as an exciting new tool to add to an arsenal that includes 3D and animation in addition to drawing.
well said
It was stated that SAG members voted to strike, which isn't true. Voting for a strike authorization, is NOT the vote to strike. It gives the bargaining committee the approval to call a strike, might sound like semantics, but they are 2 different things.
If new stuff isnt being made I thank you. I will catch up on all the good old shows that had stories and meaning...
In other words, these writers up a creek when it comes to every form of leverage they might apply in a negotiation. If companies are already looking to cut costs and your job is about to be automated, I am not sure one could pick a worst time to strike.
One of the demands is asking to be paid. At all. Studios started asking for writers to do scripts without pay and only pay them if they like the script. They also tried to make them all independent contractors with no benefits and completely eliminate the writer’s room. Especially with late night comedy shows this would destroy the quality of the shows. They went on strike for a very good reason.
@@amberspark9434 None of what you stated has any bearing on my comment, and I am honestly not sure if you are trolling me with the bit about the quality of late night comedy shows taking a hit.
If the quality of the show gets destroyed, the studio would get hit, wouldn't they?
@@mja2239 I assume it was a troll comment since late comedy show quality is already in the gutter. Most were already on the chopping block, with a number having been canceled this past year, before this writer strike was even an issue. Quite simply, it was a poor example to make a quality loss argument, and honestly outside of a few areas of production I think most of Hollywood would struggle to make such an argument in negotiations. Too much of the industry has turned into McDonald's productions.
If the studios agree to ban AI, they'll just be instantly outcompeted by startups who never hired writers in the first place. They will never agree to this demand.
How exactly do you think film works?
@@asf8648 Kind of a vague question. The production process? Most commonly, someone - a producer, writer, or director - will pitch an idea to a studio. Once accepted, scripts and storyboards are created. Then actors and production crew are engaged, and it's filmed. With AI, a studio can go straight from pitch to production.
@@dansands8140 no like, the creative process and artistry? Do you think of film as just a product to consume?
studios will either sink or swim. at the end of the day, the people decide which is better.
They won't get other Union talent to make the movie. And yes, amateurs can try, they already do. Independent non union filmmaking has been around forever, but people don't watch it.
Where one door closes another one opens! I love that saying! 😊
How does this strike impact me? If no new movies are made then I still have UA-cam, old VHS tapes, DVDs, blue rays, and of course my external hard drive that has every movie and music I ever bought or downloaded on file. Trust me as far as entertainment goes, I'm covered. If UPS or Amazon workers strike then that affects me and the economy. Sorry actors this is your personal fight. 😑
As long as the writers are asked to work, they have the right to demand a fair wage. That being said, with shows already being so unoriginal, this problem is only going to get worse with AI especially since it just regurgitates feed data (albeit paraphrased in an 'original' manner). Once the lack of ingenuity gets unbearable for the audience (as it had during previous writer strikes with all the redundant reality tv), writers will have more leverage not only with respect to their payment but also how their work can be copyrighted and prevented from being used to teach AI..

Studios will negotiate. There’s no way! It’s like the autonomous car. It’s too early like that guy said. Maybe at some point but not now.
Let's see how long writing or making films with AI works if the creators of the movies or texts that the AI uses as a ressource to learn and create something on it's own (for a lack of a better term I will use this phrase, the whole process is a bit different and much more difficult though) simply ban the use for those purpose. Either the AI users disregard this and get sued into oblivion or the AI users have to file a motion to limit the copyright and most bigger companies would rather stop that because as mucha s small content creators stand to gain from that, the big ones also stand to lose even more.
How could they ban the use of AI for script-writing? The AI companies agree expand the use of their products to include script-writing, and the steamer company agree to use AI for script-writing.
You can do script writing worldwide! Btw. the EU 🇪🇺 is working in banning certain fields for AI....👎
@@DG-hw8it Oh, I know. A friend of my cousin has been working as a script writer for Warner Bros for several months. And that person doesn't live in US.
Interesting news about EU btw. How do they think they can compete with other regions who using AI?🤔 Personally, I think any country who ban the use of AI will lose because every country depends on others. For example, if US banned AI for script writing, studios will pay overseas script writers with less cost, and you bet those overseas script writers are using AI. If US ban using overseas script writers, other countries (China, India, etc.) could use their bargaining power in trading to make US allow script writers from their countries work for US movie industry. You know in the past China required any foreign movies who want to be played in China should use Chinese workers (actors, directors, etc.) or locations. And a lot of Hollywood studios succumbed to that requirement.
