Well, I would have the "before" picture on my wall but it's so fascinating watching your process and I understand when something is missing or not quite right or finished. You're talking about art, but really, you're talking about LIFE. 🙂
You have explained your thought processes expertly. I began thinking of problem solving in a totally new light. The finished piece is beautiful. Thanks for sharing your process.
I’m so happy it resonates! I know thinking in this way has opened up possibilities in my work that I didn’t have when I thought problem solving meant the work was bad. So happy it helps others too.
At around 7 minutes into this video I kept wanting you to turn the painting upside down because I thought the composition would be really cool. So I turned my computer upside down, and it really was! I have been learning that that is often a good trick - to see it from a different perspective. But I have a long way to go yet. I have a painting I started probably 1-1/2 years ago that is a sort of abstract flower painting like how yours began, and I'm seeing that if I use this idea of collage on it I think I could really make it work. I had been unable to figure out where to take it next. I'm pretty new at painting, but I am so loving it. Thanks for your videos. I just discovered you this morning and your ideas are really inspiring! (I really love your work and those flowers that are pinky/orangy/red are such a rich and gorgeous colour!}
I regularly turn my paintings round and round when I’m painting so I can get new perspectives. It’s a great tool! I’m so happy you’re trying collage on your painting-I’ve had many paintings I’ve worked on for years, btw. I’ll pull them out, work on them, and then put them away until I run across them again. I guess some paintings were never meant to get done in one quick shot. 😊. I’m glad you’re here, thanks for watching!
I have just got into mixed media and collage and I am finding all my ‘mistakes’ are just layers ! I can keep going till I like it. This is so much more fun than starting out trying to create a masterpiece.
I totally agree-SO much more fun! And such a relief to know that you can just keep going until you get there. I loved how you said “all my mistakes were just layers”-such a fantastic perspective shift. Thanks for watching!
Greetings from 2ish hours south of Nashville. 😉 New subscriber. Love your work and am very grateful for your insights. Thank you! This painting is beautiful, please don't doubt that. ❤️✝️🌹✝️❤️
Wow - you ate super hard in yourself and I think unduly so - I loved the piece from the start and I like your style so don’t apologize for that - I felt the area you saw as isolated was a restful contrast and I felt it was connected by color as it was -
I have had to walk away from a project for a few days just to think about it and then go back. There have been times that it takes several attempts before i am satisfied.
Absolutely relate to this-sometimes I’ve walked away for months and then one day I just know what to do to move forward. And I think having to try several times is becoming somewhat normal for me. Thanks for your comment, Jeffery!
Hi Joni! The medium is Golden Liquid Glazing medium and I buy it in a big jar and then pour it into this store bought generic sort of ketchup bottle I bought at the grocery store.
I use different kinds (sorry, unsatisfying answer 😆) but I usually either order some off of Amazon or use tissue paper that randomly comes through my house in gifts or boxes. Here’s one kind on amazon that I’ve used: amzn.to/44JG9uB (please note: I often recommend resources, some I receive an affiliate commission for at no additional cost to you.)
I don’t have much info out about it yet, just the waitlist to be notified is all that’s up. So you’re not missing anything 😊. The class will be recorded, go at your own pace and cover making your own collage papers, and then learning the process through a couple demos that you can follow along with. There will probably be a live call at some point so people can ask questions and get clarification on the process if they need it.
@@marabethquinart thanks! I added myself to your list, and looking forward to what you are going to be planning. I would love a teaching on how to overcome difficult moments where you don't know how to move forward and loose courage, or there is a part that you really like and now you're afraid to ruin it... Love your work and your video's btw! blessings from the Netherlands 🌷🌷🌷
Those are great ideas for new videos because those are universal thoughts, concerns and blocks. I run into them frequently. In my class I do talk a lot along the way about thoughts and blocks like these-maybe not these specifically but in general. So glad you signed up!
They are a mixture of whimsical marks of paint and paper that is not cut or torn too perfectly. Flowers are more interesting when they are irregularly shaped and even when some of them is missing or barely there. Having a strong center (stamen area) helps to hold it together as well.
Are there ever any parts of your paintings that end up with no collage on them? And if so, don't they look odd next to so many tissued layers? As in the texture being so visually different?
Great question! There are places here and there that are just paint and mixed media marks, but most is paper. The texture of the layered papers is so varied, that transitioning to a paint-only spot is usually consistent with the overall varied texture. But in places where the transition needs a little help, I will usually add some glazing medium to some paint and add paint marks into the transition to connect the two a little more. Does that make sense?
@@marabethquinart Yes, yes, it does, thank you. Somehow it's reassuring to me that I can sort of try this, and eventually marry the two. I was envisioning flat places when you view it slightly from the side, which might show up the difference too much & render it much less appealing.
The only problem is too many colors. Composition with abstract I don't know enough about so I can't comment on that. I would try the same painting with a limited pallette.
@@marabethquinart The paintings you do are really good. I appreciate the style and the methods and the tips.. Abstracts are challenging to do. I am too ill to paint but the work you do keeps my dream alive. It's all about the problem solving. You hit the nail on the head. That is the juice and cornerstone. If you can get comfortable with that you have won the battle. That is why I like this channel. It is relevant to the process of making art and also with living a good life outside of art. The lessons transfer to real life in a one to one manner. So art making creates a flow in your life so the bumps and bruises outside of art feel like nothing because you practiced it in the art already. I don't think I have seen anyone articulate the art making process so succintly and accurately with the fewest words before and I have been watching videos for years and years. both representational and non representational. You could easily write a book on the process of art making. THanks.❤
Well, Joel, I can’t thank you enough for that insight, articulation and encouragement!! Thank you. This comment is more than I could have hoped for when I started this channel. And I am so sorry that you are ill and cannot paint. I do love, however, that your experience of art and the process is obviously very alive and present even though you’re not painting. I think it changes us and stays active in that way if we love it enough. Thanks again for watching and for this lovely, lovely comment 🥰
Love your approach, process, problem solving, great textures....at one stage of the video, hence this comment, I thought that turning the canvas, painting so the stripes were vertical and not horizontal I think would have changed the whole composition. It wld look like a window and shadows in the background. The darker colours flowers were the foreground. Hope that makes sense. Thank you for sharing. 😊💐💖🙏💕
It does make sense! In fact, that’s the way I eventually chose to photograph it to put it on my website. Great minds think alike 😆. Thanks for watching!

I can not thank you enough for sharing your experiences
So happy it’s helpful! 💫💫
Love how some of the closeups of the painting (around the 9-minute mark), look like beautiful smaller paintings in themselves.
I always love that too 🥰 Thanks for watching!
Yes. They are more interesting than the strong grid. I sometimes use the "painting" as a madterboard and chop it up into little gems.
This is one of my favorites of yours. Thank you for being so generous in sharing your painting process.
Oh thank you so much! And I love sharing my process-it’s fun and helps me understand it better as well. Thanks so much for watching 😊
Wonderful to hear you spell out the process you go through! Very freeing!
So happy to hear it! Thanks for watching 😊
I really enjoyed the parts where you identify the problems and explore the possibilities - so helpful hear your thought process
Oh good, I’m glad to hear that’s helpful! I know I always learn new things when I hear someone share their decision process.
THANK YOU for this video, for sharing your problem-solving process and making it seem like a positive part of the art process.
My complete pleasure, Luellen! (Hope I guessed your name correctly 😉)
Sometimes you just have to step away. Beautiful work 💗. Thanks for sharing 😊
Agreed. Stepping away is always a requirement for me. I lose my perspective. Thanks so much for watching, I appreciate it. 😊
This piece has a lot of interesting movement…..I really love it!
Thanks so much, Jill! It took me a minute, but I finally decided I liked it as is 😊

I think you nailed it in the end. I'm inspired to do some paint-overs after seeing your video. Thanks!

Its out! Here’s the link: marabethquinart.thinkific.com/courses/paint-with-paper
What medium are you using in that squeeze bottle ad did it come in the squeeze bottle?

How do you create the flowers? HELP 😳
