Marabeth, I finished your "Painting with Paper" class but, didn't give comments at the end. That was because I went through the whole class, just watching and taking it all in. Now I am beginning my work slowly, class by class to see how I do. I'm very excited to start this process as I love your work so much I want to be able to purchase one of your paintings eventually. I've painted tissue paper and also bought some papers on Amazon i.e. Mulberry papers and even some beautiful oriental papers. As you can tell, I'm excited. Wish me luck!
Hi Barbara! I’m so happy you’re approaching this at your own pace and at the stage where you are beginning to paint. How exciting! I’m looking forward to hearing how you enjoy the experience. Let me know!💗
Excellent idea....I will do a couple of exploration pages. Thank you for the suggestions.
Love that you continue to explore and learn. Thank you for sharing!
I’m self-taught so it’s what I’ve always had to do, but now in my late 50s, I’m definitely seeing the major advantages of it to overall health. Thanks for watching!
This is all really informative. I could go back to check things out. A great idea to do the sketch book exercise. I love to hear your thought processes. Thank you.
I love your art. I just found your videos and have not stopped watching. I'm starting to branch out into acrylic and collage and this has been so helpful. Thank you for sharing your process. I just signed up for the class notification and can't wait to learn more.
Hi Tonya! I’m so excited you signed up and I so appreciate you watching, as well as the kind words 🙏
Um, I would never think to do such a “study”. Thanks for showing its value 👍🏻. I have fun with paper collages and find I’ve only explored 2 types. Guess I need to buy more shoes! 🤣🤣. I suddenly want to buy old children’s books and use those drawings…. I sure like that journal.
Fantastic! Collage is my favourite, making my own paper's and adding them to my work makes me so happy lol.
Thank you for this genius idea, it makes so much sense, plus I know it would be great fun, especially on my "stuck" days.
Also, I ordered the sketchbook as it seems so much fun to use, it arrived last night and I am raring to go!
Thank you for your wonderful videos, fabulousl inspiration and all round awesomeness you share xxx
I’m so happy you enjoy it-I love making papers too, as well as documenting what I learn about them. Thanks for watching and leaving such a wonderful comment 🥰
I’m a Nashville native living in Clarksville. I’m glad to see you live in Nashville and on UA-cam! I love your artwork! I’m truly impressed, as an artist, who does many forms of art, however, I’ve not explored collage. I’m going to have fun trying! Thanks sooo very much for sharing your tutorials! Hugs & blessings to you!
Hi Serena! Glad you’re going to give it a try-I have loved it and am totally hooked. If you find you want to go further, I have a class that really walks you through my layering process. You might find that fun. www.marabethquinart.com/collage-class Would love to have you join me!
I loved this exercise!
😍This has definitely inspired me to do my own, I have so many 'art papers' as I call them and over the last couple days I've been thinking "I REALLY need to do something with them." 😅
Yes, it’s so good to have a record of them and how they interact, and I also find that doing something like experimenting and documenting my thoughts actually changes the way I do things and see things. It’s been a big change in my art practice. Thanks for watching. 😊
@@marabethquinart thank you. Yes I can see that it's helped you, just by your process in way you compose your works of art.
I love watching your videos and listening to your commentary, you are a great teacher! God bless you for giving so generously of your time, to help others. 🙏 🤗
I admire this swatching practice; one day I may develop the discipline! It’s clear how much info you’re gleaning. Three other materials I enjoy using in collage are parchment paper, waxed paper and cellophane. If you haven’t tried them you might have some fun experimenting with them! Thank you!
I have not tried any of those! You attach them in the same manner as paper? Thanks so much for the tip-I love trying new things!
@@marabethquinart You can Mod Podge (Or Golden Fluid) parchment paper on both sides to make a sort of rice paper that is slightly translucent. I’ve used both waxed paper and opalescent cellophane on blown-up balloons to make paper bowls, using Mod Podge or even just white glue. Also discovered I can print on waxed paper by scotch-taping it to regular printer paper and feeding it through my ink jet. I’ve been fascinated by translucence for a long time. ☺️ 💡 🪟
Thanks for all the info, and I totally agree about translucence; it’s captivating
This is such a great idea and the first reason that makes sense to me for having a sketch book. Also love the concertina effect. Did you make this or buy it?
I know, right? A great place to collect information. I bought this on Amazon-I’m pretty sure the link is in the description below the video
Thanks for showing us your testing process. What is that beautiful colour you are using as your dark paint background?
You’re welcome! And that color is Amsterdam’s greenish blue amzn.to/3LKdH30 + black
That's all very beautiful. What type of papers do you use? Is that painted baking paper?
Most of the papers I use are homemade using tissue paper and pigment-usually from diluted paint or acrylic inks.
Hi Marabeth! I'm new to your channel and am loving your use of collage. Can you tell me why you use glazing liquid over gloss or matte medium?
Hi Diane! Honestly, I started using it because it was what I had on hand when I started working with collage-I have used it for acrylic glazing a long time. I’ve worked with a couple other kinds but never the gloss or matte medium. What do you think about those?
@@marabethquinart In a sketchbook, pages with matte Medium won't stick together. They will stick together with Gloss medium. Drying time is the same as acrylic paint. I do know that glazing liquid creates transparency in acrylics and it dries more slowly. The matte and gloss mediums dry clear and can be used as a way to extend paint, isolate a coat, seal panels, use as a final coat before varnish on a. painting. I hadn't even considered glazing liquid. Is there an advantage to slowing the drying down in collage? I do like the satin finish.
Thanks for all of this, Diane! I appreciate the info so much. I’ll have to try the matte medium. I’m not such a fan of the gloss. But I don’t necessarily see an advantage to slowing the drying time with collage, in fact, I’d like it to go a bit faster so maybe I should try the matte medium for that reason. Thanks!
I love love love matte medium for collage, it my go to and I buy it by the gallon. Some people dilute with water. I use it both ways. Brush it on straight and lightly wipe off the excess and dry ing time is faster....I feel.
Beautiful work and encouragement ! Are you using gesso to adhere your papers?
Thank you! I am using Golden Liquid Glazing medium. I also have used a little matte medium too, but the glazing medium is what I use most right now.
Thank you Marabeth. This was very helpful and thanks for listing the Supplies. Did you create the pack of little dachshunds, or was that a coincidence?♥😄 Upps, now I have watched again and saw the little dogs on the paper, sorry!
I’m glad it was helpful! And yes, isn’t that dachshund tissue paper adorable? I forget where I picked it up but I’ve never used it on a painting…so far! Thanks for watching!
Great video Marabeth. Do you find much difference painting your own papers using a quality white Artist Tissue paper compared to one that you comes from say a $2 shop. I've had this palette in my head since I started watching your YT, and I've just watched an older video where you repainted an older painting and half way through decided you needed to make a whole new batch of painted tissue, and Bam, they are exactly what type of palette I had in mind. I'm asking because Tissue paper is very expensive (who knew) here in Australia. 10 sheets for A$28 or 60 for A$130. I have a feeling once you start it's easy to fly through loads of tissue paper. I'm that person who usually wants the best tools and paints, but thought I'd ask for a professional opinion before I dive in.
Oh my, I see why you want to ask that with those prices. What I have found is that the different tissue papers have different qualities-some tear along a bias, while others are easier to tear in any direction. Some look more fibrous, which others are more transparent. I would suggest using any you come across and take note of the qualities that you love. Who knows, you may find the cheapest ones to have qualities that are best!
Did you use a buff or cream colour for your light section and possibly dark blue for the dark section, it’s difficult to tell on the video,I may have missed you telling us.
Not sure-I use Titan Buff a lot and love it. And I do love to make dark blue and dark teal, so yes, I’m sure that’s what’s in the dark section
How lightfast are the pre-dyed papers? I was told to never use them.
I couldn’t speak to that with any accuracy-I’m not even sure how lightfast the homemade tissue papers are that I make. I do think varnishing well is important to that end.
@@marabethquinart Hi, and thanks for your reply. I come at this from the decorative painting side. I have found that a lot depends on the quality of color and whether it is pigment or dye based. Dye based paints fade more with exposure to light. I do agree that a good uv blocking varnish would be very helpful though. Love your channel!
Thanks for that info-I’d like to learn more about that! I appreciate it and thanks for watching 😊
Do you have to make sure that all the papers used are acid free? Thanks.
I haven’t in the past but I know there are papers that can be purchased that are acid free.
Is the golden medium Matt or gloss or satin??
I use satin but I’m sure all of them would be fine. Also just matte medium works as well as the glazing medium.
I don't even "allow" oneffenheid in my paintings, how much more a "collage"!!!lolz
This would be a stretch for you then 😊 I’ve actually loved how it’s allowed me to find the beauty in imperfections.
You’re enough. Get rid of the music. So distracting
You're so helpful. Didn't even notice the music. Thank you so much.
I don't need to know "collage" materials; I paint with Italian Oil!!!
Ty for pointing out that we should not expect to already know.
That was a major realization for me and changed a lot of things. Glad it was helpful.
