Love this video! Thank you so much! Listening to a seasoned artist and things that hVe helped or could help is wonderful. And getting to watch you work is one of my favorite things! ♥️♥️
What a GORGEOUS painting. I think it's my favorite of all your paintings I've seen so far. I'm such a fan of your style, and I appreciate your videos and how you share your thoughts processes. But as I watch you paint, and when I look at the finished product, I feel intimidated and think I'll never be that good. I will work on those issues. Thank you so much for what you do.
I know how you feel, Betsy. I had those same thoughts when I was starting out. It took practice...a whole lot of practice...to get to where I am today. You can do it, too!
This video was so helpful for me. I paint abstracts (just for fun) and was having major inspiration block on my current painting. Then this video came up in my UA-cam feed. It was reassuring to know that you have inspiration blocks too. The way you handled it really helped me charge through my painting block. I think the way you encouraged to keep going with the layers was the most helpful. I tend to get really attached to parts of a painting, even though the overall composition isn't working. So by sort of letting go and moving ahead with new layers, eventually it all came together. Now I'm really pleased with it. As a bonus, I came up with a new palette that I'm anxious to try on a new canvas, bright avocado green, mustard yellow and brick red.
@johnjezek7617 This makes me super happy to hear, John! I'm so glad that the video was helpful and helped you push through your creative block. Getting attached to parts of a painting before you are done makes it so hard to finish the art. I'm glad you recognized that in your painting process and moved forward. Awesome!! 🙌 And, love your new color combo. Have fun creating!
You made my day, Betty. You forgot to list 'watch a Betty Franks video' for inspiration. Although I am an abstract painter, I glean so very much from your wonderful tutorials. Thank you again.
Thank you for this video. I’ve gone over a canvas 7 times.🤦🏻♀️ 7 times Betty!!! I almost gave up…but I remember back than I was trying to be perfect and seeing too many other artist videos because I was trying to figure out my style at that time. Now I just go over the canvas about 3 times. 😂🤣
Definitely perfectionism is a problem! I get so angry at myself for never being, “good enough “…. Thank goodness and thanks partially to you, I have learned to just be alone with and committed to my art.
Hi Amy! I have often said those words to myself, too. That's when I discovered listening to a podcast or audiobook kept the negative self talk in my head to a minimum (it's still sneaks in a bit). Keep on creating and enjoying the process. Just tell yourself you're practicing. Less stress that way! 🩵
Always really good to hear you talking through exactly how you get through your struggles and arrive in a position of success and satisfaction..it's so calming, relevant and helpful. All those suggestions in this video were something I sometimes do but just hearing it from you direct is really helpful. To be able to have your voice is a great way to support our creativity too. Really grateful to you Betty. Enjoy your trip to Coatia. ❤
I have been watching you all day and am so happy because I think I have made a breakthrough in my understanding of your process. Thank you so much for your generous instruction and explanations. I am hoping to get myself up to the point of being able to do a BIG piece. Very grateful....
The transformation of this painting was like a book. With its past lives. I love it! And thank you for the therapy sesh. Really, everything you talked about relates to being "stuck" in any aspect of life. What I like about you Betty, is that you are so down to earth.
So wonderful to listen to your commentary while you paint! Lady your vibe is so positive, it emanates! After your videos I feel like a better painter instantly, lol! Your work here is lovely. I’m sure the show went ka-ching for ya! And your tips on conquering a block will help me. I’m guilty of quite a few of those. Many thanks! - Josie B
I started a painting 3 weeks ago and I finished it in about a week. I varnished and was ready to hang it on my wall. But I didn’t like it…I kept looking at is and thinking….there is something wrong with this painting…it’s about the size you are doing in this video. So after I listened to this video, I figured out what I didn’t like…my marks were too small. I’m not sure to working on large canvases and I think I mentioned that to you before….so at that point I started it all over. It’s almost finished……thank you…this is what I needed to heard or see..😂. Again…..Thank you.
Wohooo! So glad you figured it out. Isn't it interesting when that light bult moment happens. It's like it was so obviously, yet so hard to figure out! Excited for you, Josephine!
I went back and saw this video again. It’s t helped so much. I was stuck for a few weeks over the holidays. I feel like I lost my mojo. Thanks for the tips. . ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Totally understand! I feel like the hustle and bustle of the holidays gets us a bit out of wack when it comes to creating. You'll be in the swing of it all again soon!
I have been there so many times! I have learned to shut out any negative thoughts. I also paint over many times and I love old paintings poking through. Thank you for this video. Every artist needs to watch it.
Thank you!!! I’ve been watching your videos for awhile now, and recently painted four small pieces that made up one 16” x 24” painting. It was exciting to see it transform into a lovely celebration of my visit to the Portland, OR area this past spring. There was an explosion of wild and cultivated flowers, plants, waterfalls and trees; and to my delight, I think my painting reflected that! I love your technique, it’s a whole new world for me!! 🎉
I so appreciate the time you took to show us the creating process after a canvas was deemed " not acceptable ". I am always wanting "be finished"! This was such a learning experience for me. Thank you so much
You are so welcome, Joyce! For me personally, I really love the process of painting. However, sometimes it just doesn't result in something that I'm happy with!
I like how you think Betty! Thanks for taking the time to talk us thru what goes thru your head sometimes. Its always helpful! I'm not sure why but the green areas on that canvas remind me of tombstones... I have no idea why.... I like when you put those type of marks i think they add to the idea that you are painting a garden but this time they came across different for me.. Hugs! deb
Just a wonderful piece of work. How you work through the composition at the end was just fantastic. Great job on the competition of this work. Thanks so very much for sharing your process and art journey!
You are so welcome, Liz. I hope it helps to get you moving forward again. One thing I find that helps me a lot is to work on paper--because it's JUST paper! No stress if it doesn't work out. You got this!
Thank you for this new video! Also can you tell us what kind of shoes you wear when you’re standing up for such long periods of time! I’m finding that me feet hurt when I’m painting all afternoon. Thank you Betty for all of your good tips!
A couple of years ago I decided to try out Crocs. Well, I love them! It's easy to slip them on (before, I wore tennis shoes) and I find that they're very comfortable after hours of standing.
Thank you so much for talking about this ,i feel so much better now .I will try to take my canvas out again one more time ,maby this time it will work 🤔I just love your art ,it is amazing 🥰🤩
Please help, Betty or someone else! I am looking for a video of yours where you show how you prepare your paintings for a show. I'm especially interested in how you attached the wire to the backside of the frame. Do you remember what the video is called? 😊🧡 Magdalena
Hi Betty! Thank you so much for sharing your lovely art and techniques! I'm a very impatient painter but I've always disliked the 'dark sheen' that i find with acrylics. I can mitigate that by using gouache white but there's a tendency for colours to go a bit chalky and pastel. I want an opaque matt finish. Am intrigued by your Nova paints but there's no obvious distributor here in UK. Can i ask what brand you might fall back on if, heaven forbid, they took away your Novas?! Also, i can't access your website! All links just come up blank! Any tips? Thanks again for your generosity! :))
Hi Steven! I'm sorry you can't access my website. Maybe try a different browser? My fallback paints would be Golden and Liquitex. Sorry you're not able to get Nova in the UK. Really love them!
Thanks for reply! I think it would be cheaper to buy another artist's work, than paint my own pictures using Golden paints!! I ordered a set by Liquitex! And I will try again to access your site. Thank you once again for sharing your work and enthusiasm... and without being shouty and patronising like a lot of UA-camrs! It's especially heartening to hear how you found your feet at fifty! I've been scratching at different styles and techniques for years, with levels of self criticism bordering on abuse! Your approach and example have really taken some weight off and let some light in! Quite amazing!
